Over the summer, at the launch of the new Rolex Deep Sea D-Blue, I had the chance to not only speak to James Cameron about his mission to explore the Mariana Trench (the deepest part of the world's oceans), but also to see, if briefly, two massively important watches. In fact, it was 55 years ago this month that one of these two watches earned its stripes when Captain Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard descended to the bottom of the ocean's floor C over 35,800 feet. The watch that went with them (though, on the OUTSIDE of the Bathyscaphe Trieste) is the watch you see here: This is the legendary Deep Sea Special. And while this isn...

Greubel Forsey Double Tourbillon Technique Black Famous for their bold multi-tourbillon pieces in gold and platinum, Greubel Forsey is toning it down a little bit with the Double Tourbillon Technique Black. Ok, maybe they're only toning it down a very little bit. Still on display is a 30 degrees double tourbillon and a handful of other goodies. While the black titanium case and dark rubber strap are relatively subdued, the open worked movement inside the Technique Black is difficult to ignore. At 6 o'clock is the double tourbillon (one rotating inside the other) on a 30 degree tilt. The inner cage rotates once every 60 seconds and the outer cage rotates once every f...

There isn't anything exceptionally new about this watch that we saw at SIHH yesterday, but I still absolutely love it.? It's the first time Vacheron has made its beautiful Patrimony Traditionnelle 38mm in a platinum case, and to boot this one features a stunning slate grey dial.?Inside is the same gorgeous in-house manually wound caliber 4400 found in the other patrimony watches, but with a heavy platinum case and grey dial, the watch has a totally new feel.? Price should be about $34,000 when it hits stores soon.? This really is just a gorgeous watch, from top to bottom....

It was just before a Halloween party in 2012 when Throne Watches was born. Co-Founder Greg Mills was at his friend and Co-Founder Zack Sears apartment and started working with some leather scraps he had lying around and decided he would fashion himself a watch strap.I said, Hey man, Im going to try and learn how to make a watch strap,' Mills recounted recently at the company's Williamsburg headquarters. I just used a box cutter and I just poked it with a leather awl. I figured out how to make it and showed up to the party. And it was a hit. But little did he know then that would be the beginning of the Brooklyn-based watch startup that is now taking pre-orders for their own line of wat...

Last week, Christies held an online auction to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Goldfinger, the third Bond film, which first hit theaters in 1964. With all proceeds going to the NSPCC, online bidders spared no expense in snatching up iconic James Bond memorabilia. Omega provided a contribution of their own to the auction, a piece unique Seamaster Aqua Terra covered in 18k gold. Pre-auction estimates on the watch were 12,000-18,000 CHF. The final realized price? 106,000 CHF. Bond has had an Omega strapped to his wrist since 1995s GoldenEye, and Omega has been known to produce limited-edition watches to celebrate the partner...

There are just a small handful of truly meaningful watch stores in the United States. This group of forward-thinking, daring, and creative jewelers are, in some cases, responsible for breeding the generation of watch buyers that kept the entire industry afloat during some of its hardest times, and built it into the period of development and innovation that we are currently enjoying. Without these select watch retailers, there would be no industry to enjoy. Roberto Chiappelloni's Manfredi Jewels in Greenwich, CT, is at the forefront of this group, and today, we take an inside look at this amazing bastion of watchmaking. Chiappello...

Together, they represent no less than 20 new additions to the Portofino family. The theme? Diamonds. And we're back with even more from Watches & Wonders in Hong Kong. This time, Panerai shows us what will be a new ongoing collection in its Radiomir 1940s line, with an in-house, micro-rotor-powered, self-winding movement. First, let's remember that the 1940 is something of a hybrid line between the traditional Luminor and Radiomir collections, as we explained when it was launched way back when with a Minerva movement inside. The Radiomir 1940 Automatic comes in two versions of the standard 45 mm case C steel (PAM00572) and red gold (PAM00573). The steel comes with a black dial and luminous sandwiched numerals and baton indices. The red gold offers the same only on a brown dial. They bot...

Guess whats coming upits the Lange 1s birthday! Normally, it would be you who would get a present for the birthday boy/girl. But, on the contrary, A. Lange & Sohne is the one thats offering us a treat. That treat is of course the Lange 1 Special Edition 20th Anniversary, announced just minutes ago in Hong Kong at Watches & Wonders.October of 1994 was an important month in Dresden because thats when A. Lange & Sohne unveiled the Lange 1 at the presentation of its first wristwatch collection. It was a historical moment, mainly because it was a resurgence in design C the outsize date, superior finishing C and technical innovation C the three-day movement. The Lange 1 became no...

Montblanc took a formal path with this watch, whereas its predecessor was definitely on the ...

This week we are bringing you six watches to watch in the Antiquorum sale next week in New York. Jason Heaton already showed you one highlight of the sale: Philippe-Pierre Cousteau's very early reference 1665 Rolex Sea-Dweller. Here are six more watches in the sale that I particularly like, including an Omega, Patek, Vacheron, Lange, Heuer, and LeCoultre, plus a bonus enamel necklace watch for the ladies. As always, we suggest getting in touch with the auction house for additional photos, including photos of the movement. And if possible, it is always best to examine these watches in person. Antiquorum will be hosting previews in New York tomorrow (Saturday) from noon to five, Sunday from noo...

On Tuesday night, the new Polo Ralph Lauren store at 711 5th Avenue hosted a launch event for the new book Rowing Blazers by Jack Carlson and principal photographer F.E. Castleberry. It was a packed, invitation-only event with about 700 guests visiting the two-story store. We thought it would be an interesting opportunity to see what watches were on the wrists of some of the attendees, both ladies and gentlemen, and of course take a quick look at this sartorially-focused book. If Jack's name sounds familiar, it is because HODINKEE sponsored his boats for two races last year: the winning boat in the Britannia Challenge Cup of ...

Guten Tag again! A. Lange & Sohne sure is on a special-edition roll. We recently brought you the Langematik Perpetual in white gold, and were happy to say that the Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mrite is getting the same treatment. These new editions are exciting because they give us another chance to take detailed looks at what makes these watches great. So, lets look on. Firstly, the dial is argent-colored solid-silver. This creates a noticeable contrast to the blued-steel hands and virtually flawless printing of the overlaying subdials. The case, in?finely polished gold with curved lugs, measures in at 41.9 mm ...

The Cousteau name is synonymous with diving and underwater exploration and the cachet of the mere surname itself lends credibility and value to anything attached to it. Weve featured a few dive watches worn by Cousteaus here before, like the orange DOXAs worn by both Jean-Michel and his son Fabien. But despite the familys long association with DOXA, there were also a lot of other marques on Cousteau wrists over the years OMEGA, Blancpain, Aquastar, and of course, Rolex. On September 30th, Antiquorum will be including one of those Cousteau Rolexes in its Important Watches auction and it is a watch that would be important even without the pedigree of its original owner. It is a 1967 Sea Dw...

We've come to know Arnold & Son as a modern manufacture with a distinct commitment to technical advancement and a knack for making some seriously good looking watches. Last night, we had the opportunity to invite a select group of readers, friends, and collectors, to a private dinner with Arnold & Son. The evening was filled with good food, good conversation, and of course, a selection of the brand's fine timepieces for all to explore. Collectors were guided through Arnold & Son's various collections by Dr. Sebastien Chaulmontet, Head of Movement Design (far l.) The entire range of guests, from seasoned collectors to c...

The 1966 line from Girard-Perregaux is easily the purest from this manufacture of haute horlogerie. But, it might be the easiest to forget too, because GP has become known for not only waterproof sport watches like the Chrono Hawk, but also for truly cutting edge masterworks like the 2013 GPHG winning Constant Escapement LM. But while tri-axial tourbillons and triple bridges are fun to read about (and write about!), they are not what the average watch lover looks for in an everyday timepiece. For that, there is the 1966 collection, and today we're having a look at the gorgeous and elegant (and brand new!) dual time in rose gold. ...

Master watchmaker Michel Boulanger was selected to participate in the Naissance d'une Montre program. What would happen if traditional watchmaking techniques died out? For Stephen Forsey and Robert Greubel, this thought was anathema. Their namesake company, Gruebel Forsey, relies on these very techniques to produce timepieces that have become lore among modern collectors. If these techniques die out, then their future, and the future of other high-end independents dies out too. So, to prolong these traditions, they joined forces with Philippe Dufour to create an incubator program for fully hand-crafted watchmaking called Naissance dune Montre. One watchmaker was s...
