The "Old Mind" series consists of two prototypes, each featuring a different style of hand-guilloche pattern on the dial, and a 60-second tourbillon movement. This is the break-out model from Van Bricht, a fledgeling high horology manufacture out of Belgium. Two young watchmakers teamed up to form the brand, and they plan to make 25 examples of these watches.? Sbastien Lambricht and Bernard Van Ormelingen both attended the same watchmaking school in Namur, Belgium and then independently went on to specialize in different disciplines in the watchmaking world before coming together to form Van Bricht, an amalgamation of both found...

The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical, in all its various dial and case combinations, has unequivocally been a runaway hit with the enthusiast community. And it's no wonder why C the watch from which it takes its inspiration, the MIL-W-3818B (and MIL-W-46374), has been championed by the soldiering community since 1962. Now Hamilton has applied the same formula that worked so well with the Khaki Field to another military model from its storied past, the W10. It's called the Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical. The military specification that gave rise to the Pilot Pioneer came about in the 1970s, so it's fitting that the watch features a...

We're back this week with a mixed bag if there ever was one. In an attempt to shed more light on the eccentric corners of the market, we've included a time-only Longines featuring a rare pulsations dial, along with a uniquely wound alarm watch from Wittnauer, and a groundbreaking clock manufactured by IBM. On the more conventional side of the tracks, though still retaining a double take inducing twist, there's a tropical dial Zenith, along with one of the best gilt dial chronographs on the market right now. Grab your popcorn and a cold drink, as the show is about to begin.? Longines Admiral Pulsations You...

Yesterday morning, while many of us here in the U.S. were celebrating Labor Day and lamenting the end of summer, the Grand Prix dHorlogerie de Genve (GPHG) quietly dropped the shortlist of finalists for this year's competition. Winners won't be announced until November 7th, but now we've got the final collection of 84 watches that the judges will assess in the days leading up to the big award ceremony in Geneva. These watches span 14 categories, with six finalists allowed per category. The spread of brands and styles represented is pretty diverse, and with the GPHG it's pretty difficult to predict ahead of time which watch is going to take home the night's top prize C the jury is a diverse...

The Presage line was launched in 2016 and it has, in a relatively short period of time, become something of a fan favorite, thanks to Seiko's use of the line as a platform for launching a wide range of classical designs with a twist. Presage watches often feature vividly colored sunburst dials (including the very popular Cocktail Time watch) but there have also been a number of releases of Presage watches which have dials made with traditional Japanese craft techniques. These have included Shippo enamel, urushi lacquer, and Arita porcelain dials as well. These two latest models both have fired enamel dials, as well as power reserve indications (a typical feature for many Presage watches) but...

In 2017, HODINKEE and Vacheron Constantin collaborated on a watch that turned out to be a resounding success with collectors. This was a steel version of the Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955 chronograph C a signature model for Vacheron, based on the reference 6087 from 1955. The classic shape and equally classic, hand-wound, hand-finished Vacheron caliber 1142 C based on the Lemania 2310 C made for an irresistible combination in precious metals. And in steel, the HODINKEE limited edition of 36 pieces sold out immediately.? The original reference 6087, from 1955. Since then, the market for stainless steel watches has exploded i...

As I am forever on the lookout for nicely made, preferably non-retro, and certainly budget-minded sports watches, I received more than a couple of Instagram DMs pointing me to the new Sea Ranger from Chicago-based Astor & Banks. Run by one Andrew Perez, Astor & Banks numbers among the ranks of the microbrands (a term of which even I have tired). The Sea Ranger is their latest offering, and follows their format of subtly blending various elements from different genres of watch design.? Astor & Banks describes the Sea Ranger as a "field diver" and offers a blend of elements from the worlds of both field watches and dive...

The Herms Arceau is one of the company's older watch designs, going back to 1978, but the execution we have here is something entirely new. The classic form has been fitted with a skeletonized movement and a smoked black sapphire dial to show off the new caliber. The rest of the package is pretty familiar C?40mm stainless-steel case, the distinctive swirling numerals, and, of course, a killer Herms strap (in your choice of a few colors) finishing things off. Some people knock watchmakers for "variations," but this is very much a case of, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Those few design changes do make a big difference, though. To me, the Arceau has always ha...

It's the dream. You're scouring the watch table at your local flea market or thrift shop, and all of a sudden you see a watch that looks too good to be true. Last week on PBS's Antiques Roadshow, the show stopped in California's capital city of Sacramento, where one person brought out a signed Joe DiMaggio game-used bat valued at over $100,000. But we're not here to talk about sports memorabilia. The show's lineup also included an example of the Blancpain Aqua Lung purchased while thrifting. Appraiser Peter Planes dated this example of the Aqua Lung, a name given to the watch by diving legend Jacques Cousteau and sold alongside his dive equipment of the same name...

The boys are back and brimming with triple-digit episode energy. Episode 101 features, well, you (assuming you were in the first 12 listeners to send a voice memo Q+A question). For those who might have skipped Ep. 100, theres a new Q+A format in town, with Jason and James asking you to record your questions like a voice memo and then email them to the show. The boys got a bunch, so here is a wide-ranging episode with voices from all over the world.? ...

I've seen my share of vintage homage watches over the last decade or so, but that didn't stop me from sitting up a bit when I noticed this limited-edition version of the Golden Horse at a recent Rado press event. Launched in 1957, before the Swiss watchmaker became synonymous with its high-tech ceramic cases and bracelets, the Golden Horse is one of the OG Rado watch designs. The watch we have here is very much a watch of the late 1950s in appearance. The domed, smokey green dial, the neatly sized case, and the thick Hesalite-mimicking sapphire crystal are all familiar tropes of this period of watch design. (A touch of modernity comes in the form of a state-of-th...

Certain watches just stick with you. As you can imagine, I see a lot of watches, as there are plenty that come across my desk, occupy my thoughts for a few days, and are gone as quickly as they came. But every year, I find myself preoccupied with a small handful, thinking about them long after they've returned home and stories about them have been published. The Grand Seiko SBGK005 was definitely one of those watches for me in 2019. In fact, two months into 2020, it's still on my mind.? There's a lot to like about the SBGK005. You can read my full review for the details, but everything from the case profile, which references classic vintage Grand Seiko models, to...

The name William Massena is well known to the online watch collecting community. In many ways, he helped to build it. In his early days at Timezone.com, he shaped nascent watch scholarship on the internet and eventually became the forum's managing director, a mantle he just gave up earlier this year. Through it all, Massena has authored articles, weighed in on debates that still impassion collectors, and helped to shape the fortunes of watchmakers large and small. Those newer to the watch hobby may have first encountered him in his 2015 appearance on Talking Watches or when he was a guest on HODINKEE Radio. With Massena LAB, a platform he launched for creating limited edition watches in 2018...

There is no sweeter moment for any owner of a perpetual calendar than that of leap day, which comes only once every four years (mostly). The rarest of days in the Gregorian calendar, February 29 prevents our calendar from slowly slipping out of general alignment with our actual path around the sun. You see, while a common year has 365 days, it actually takes 365.2421 days for Earth to orbit the sun. As it is difficult to account for quarter days on a calendar, a leap day is assigned every four years to even out the math.? For those running the math (or who appreciate possibly unnecessary detail), there is another corrective layer built into leap years. As the act...

It's 2020, and you know what that means: It's a Leap Year. Once every four years, we are blessed with the 29th of February, which means the perpetual calendar is put to the test.? That's why we are hosting a get together this Saturday, February 29 in NYC to celebrate the complication that makes us all go, "Ooooh!" and "Ahhh!" Four years ago, we threw a similar party to honor the extra day, and it was a real hit (and a great opportunity for some watch spotting). This year's party will be co-hosted by our very own Cole Pennington and Brandon Frazin in downtown NYC. All are welcome, QP or not, but be sure to RSVP as space is limited! ...

Few, if any, possess such charisma and exhibit such passion for these little machines on our wrists as Jean-Claude Biver. He is one of the greatest storytellers of our generation (as you can see in this early Talking Watches with Ben Clymer). While we know he loves watches, last night at Phillips London, where he spoke as a part of his tour and exhibition of his private collection, Jean-Claude Biver: A Retrospective. Share, Respect, Forgive, we were struck by the multitude of different areas of life from which he draws inspiration. It was also evident just how deeply influenced he had been by his time at a hippie commune C asking the big questions, and coming to live by three principles: sha...

The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie has officially canceled the upcoming Watches and Wonders show (formerly known as the SIHH) as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus spreading throughout the world. The news came via a press release early Thursday morning. The decision was made based on the risks associated with traveling during this time when the health and well being of the community are threatened by the COVID-19 coronavirus. The show was set to take place from April 25 to 29 in Geneva."It is the FHH's duty to anticipate the potential risks that travels and important international gatherings could entail," the FHH said in its statement. It said it "understands the disappointment this yea...

This week, it's all about the rare and unusual C the scarce, the seldom-seen, and the few and far between. With picks including a likely Rolex-inspired Vacheron Constantin that's one of just 100 pieces and a stainless steel Patek Philippe existing in the single digits, we've got you covered if standing out from the pack is your move.? Should you prefer something a tad more complicated, there's a Compax from Universal Genve of the least common variety, plus a Record chronograph in a uniquely constructed case. Rarity without breaking the bank? There's that, too, in the form of an exclusive Porsche watch. Vacheron Constantin Ref. 6782 ...

Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review, and tell us which guests we should have on! You might remember a certain episode of Talking Watches from way back in 2016 with a bright red BMW M1 parked in the back and a guy talking about all manner of funky '70s and '80s watches. Then again, you might not. Either way, that guy was artist Phil Toledano, and we thought it was about time we brought him back for more. In addition to being a photographer and multimedia artist, Phil is an avid collector. He collects cars, he collects...

It was almost five years ago that we launched the HODINKEE App for iOS, giving our community a whole new way to experience HODINKEE. Now it's one of the most popular ways that people read our stories, listen to our podcasts, and shop for products from the HODINKEE Shop. Since that very first day, one of the most popular questions we got in the comments on this site, on social media, and via email is "When is an Android app coming!?" We heard you, and today we're super excited to launch the HODINKEE App for Android! Our in-house team of engineers and designers have been working tirelessly for the last few months to bring this new ...
