Wednesday evening we were lucky enough to host an incredible HODINKEE meet-up in Los Angeles. More than 100 people came by?POT (@eatatpot) at?The Line Hotel in Koreatown to enjoy good company and lots of horological nerdery. Managing editor Stephen Pulvirent was on hand to talk watches and LA watch culture, and what started as a little two-hour get together ended in the HODINKEE crew basically shutting down the bar. A big thank you to everyone who came out, some driving two hours or more from around southern California to join us. Who traveled the furthest? Independent watchmaker Romain Gautier came all the way from the Valle de Joux in Switzerland (ok, he...

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is upon us. As you probably know, that means that starting tomorrow, everyone in a time zone that follows the practice of setting clocks ahead an hour at the beginning of Spring will be waking up, and doing everything else, an hour later than usual. What you might not know is that the first modern proposal for Daylight Saving Time came, over a century ago, from an amateur entomologist, who wanted more time after work and before nightfall to catch insects.? You will sometimes read that DST was originally Ben Franklin's idea. Franklin did publish an anonymous pamphlet, in 1784, suggesting that Parisians could cut the cost of lighting home...

Tissot's always big on value and this watch is no exception. The new Ballade is a variation on the Powermatic 80 that offers a chronometer-certified movement, along with a silicon balance spring, all for under $1,000. That's really nothing to scoff at. A Tissot display from the 1930s showing its use of an antimagnetic balance. I've been a proponent of the Powermatic 80 series for a long time C basically since the first time I wore one for any real period of time, actually. They're extremely wearable watches at reasonable prices, with nice workhorse movements inside.? The Ballade ups the ante ...

TAG Heuer has just unveiled its second smartwatch, and this time it's officially "Swiss Made." The new electronic watch's finally assembly is tackled in TAG's La Chaux-de-Fonds workshop, qualifying it for the official designation, and it also introduces a new modular concept that hopes to eliminate the issue of obsolescence that plagues smartwatches, no matter the maker. Below you'll find all the details, and above, you can watch the press conference from earlier today, in Switzerland. The company's first smartwatch, the aptly-named Connected, was launched a little more than a year ago and was powered Intel hardware and Google's Android Wear operating syste...

Over the last few years, Omega has increasingly become one of the watchmaking industry's leaders in making watches that can withstand extremely powerful magnetic fields and emerge unscathed. With the opening of a new exhibition at the Omega Museum in Bienne, Omega is underscoring just how far it has come C and part of the exhibition is a watch that's survived what is, by far, the strongest magnetic field to which any watch has ever been exposed (as far as we know). Antimagnetic watch exhibit, Omega Museum, Bienne. Magnetism is of course a huge issue in watchmaking. Ultra-powerful magnetic fields like those created in labs stud...

MCT is a watchmaker known for thinking outside the box. Sometimes far outside the box. The new Dodekal One D110 presents a completely new take on a hybrid mechanical/digital display for the hours while drawing on the aesthetic codes of previous MCT watches too. This is one that definitely begs for a closer look. At SIHH we showed you the MCT Sequential One 110 Evo Vantablack, a watch that used the blackest pigment on Earth to create an otherworldly effect. This watch takes a more mechanically-focused approach to getting your attention, but does so to great effect. The D110 uses a totally new type of mechanical/digital ...

This week's issue of the New Yorker magazine features one of the best pieces of horological writing we've seen in a very long time. Novelist and all-around man of letters Gary Shteyngart penned an extensive tale of his falling in love with watches against the background of current political turmoil C and it's an excellent look at why and how we love these little antiquated machines. HODINKEE gets more than a passing nod, along with many of our friends in the watch community. After introducing us to his passion for watches through an anecdote about a Junghans-assuaged panic attack on the New York City subway, Shteyngart launches into his horological origin story (it involves a singing Casio), ...

Today in London, Montblanc has unveiled its latest horological creation, the Summit Smartwatch. You might remember Montblanc dipping its toe into the digital waters a few years ago with an "e-strap," but now the watch and pen company is diving in head-first. We've got all the details on the new line-up, along with a ton of live photos and some perspective from Montblanc CEO (and now Richemont board member) Jrome Lambert. It's worth noting up front that this is the first smartwatch to come from one of Richemont's portfolio brands. It comes hot on the heels of TAG Heuer's second smartwatch and just a few months after Frederique Constant spun off MMT as a separate ...

When the 5960/1A was first announced back in 2014, people went crazy. An automatic annual calendar flyback chronograph from Patek Philippe in a stainless steel case with a steel bracelet and a high-contrast white, black, and red dial? Yeah, there was a lot to be excited about. Now, the watch gets a make-over with a reverse dial configuration with an inky black base. No question, this is going to be one of the hottest high-end sport watches you'll be able to find anywhere. Period. Technically, this watch is exactly the same as its predecessor from 2014 and indeed what was found in the 5960 for some years before in precious metals. Same?caliber CH 28-520 IRM ...

The Chronoris Date is a modern version of the vintage watch, of the same name, released by Oris 47 years ago. The Chronoris was first introduced in 1970 and was a stop-seconds chronograph, not to mention the first chronograph for the Swiss maker. The name, as you might have guessed, is a combination of the words chronograph and Oris, and the last Chronoris was released in 2005, so it has been a little while. The Chronoris Date is a reinterpretation of a 1970s original. The new Chronoris Date is a reinterpretation of the 1970s model. It features a 39mm brushed stainless steel tonneau-shaped case. The dial features several chapt...

Earlier today, we received some fresh details concerning Phillips next themed sale - the fourth since the auction house formed a partnership with consulting firm Bacs & Russo. The first themed sale, which took place in 2015, centered around the Day-Date. This time, Phillips will concentrate on Heuer. It was inevitable, really. Heuer has enjoyed a significant increase in collectability in recent years, the Autavia recently setting the auction world alight when it officially became a six-figure watch. In total, Phillips will be offering 49 vintage Heuer chronographs, all of them rare and all of them produced between 1962 and 1982 - otherwise know as the Jack Heuer era - before the company...

Bulgari has added a new watch to its Octo collection, the Octo Roma. The Octo Roma is similar to its predecessor, the Octo Solotempo, and is still very much Bulgari's take on a classic time-and-date watch, only with a slightly different case and some new design features. Let's see what it's all about, shall we? The Bulgari Octo Roma in rose gold. First things first, the Octo Roma has a 41mm rounded octagonal case. It's not nearly as sharp and architectural as what you'll find with, say, the Octo Finissimo Automatique?(or the Solotempo).?The watch is available in stainless steel with a black lacquered dial and a steel bracelet,...

Zenith is back with a new El Primero C the Defy El Primero 21. This new addition to the collection is a contemporary twist on an old classic with a titanium case, a skeletonized dial, and a new movement. The Defy (or as it was originally called, the Defi) has been a part of the brand's fabric since the old days when Georges Favre-Jacot started the manufacture in 1865. In 1969, the "i"?was dropped and a "y"?was added, thus creating the Defy collection. The collection remained in place until the late 1990s, with some rather loud designs. Today the Defy is back with the Defy El Primero 21, and it's got a totally different flavor. Let's start with the basics. The Def...

This week, the selected watches all share one common characteristic: they were made in the late 1960s-early 1970s, just before the quartz crisis. They were not marketed as luxury products, just solid wristwatches for everyday wear. You will discover the Zenith El Primero A3817, with its striking tri-color dial and automatic chronograph caliber C and we also have an unusual high-beat, chronometer-certified Ulysse Nardin. And of course, our roundup wouldn't be complete without a couple of dive watches, namely the Movado Super Sub Sea and the Bulova Oceanographer Automatic. This is your Bring A Loupe for March 17, 2017. A Movado Super Sub Sea ...

It is no secret that Tudor had a huge year at Baselworld last year. First there was the Black Bay 36, which was not-so-secretly one of my favorite watches of the show, and then we got the?Black Bay Bronze?and the Black Bay Dark. Well, this year there is a new sheriff in town, by the name of the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Steel reference 79730. That's right, Tudor has released a new addition to the Black Bay collection with a stainless steel bezel (and, for the first time, a date window). The new Black Bay Steel is the the same Black Bay you know and love, but with a little something extra. First of all, it comes in the classic 41mm...

It was all about the Da Vinci at the start of the year for IWC, with a new automatic, a new Tourbillon chronograph, and a new perpetual calendar, among other watches. But the Swiss watch company has quickly switched gears and has is enriching its new collection with four new references in its technically driven Ingenieur collection, all in one go. The new watches were introduced this morning in the UK, during the Goodwood 75th Members Meeting, an event which IWC has been a regular partner of for some years now. Last year's Ingenieur Chronograph Edition 'Rudolf Caracciola.' Last year, the co...

You probably don't immediately think "sport watch" when you think of NOMOS, but the design-minded German brand does make more than minimalist dress watches. The Ahoi carries through many of the same ideas, but in the form of a streamlined dive watch. Today the Ahoi gets a major update in the form of a smaller case size, an updated movement, and two bright new dials just in time for warmer weather. The new Signalrot (Signal Red) color makes this the brightest NOMOS yet. The Ahoi first came out back in 2013 and got updated with a darker Atlantik Blue dial a year later. It's still a part of Nomos's offering, with or without a dat...

The Club is one of the more idiosyncratic NOMOS watches, as it sits somewhere between a dress watch and a sport watch in terms of both its architecture and its dial design. The Club has come in various sizes, including 36mm (hand-wound), 38.5mm (hand-wound with date), and 40mm (automatic), and traditionally there have been two dial options, one light and one dark. Today we get four new dial colors, a new movement, and a new size, breathing fresh life into the NOMOS mainstay. The 37mm case size is new for the Club collection. First off, these new Club models are 37mm, a new size for the collection (and, in my opinion, the best ...
