Best Super NEWS Watches

Heading into this morning's Omega meeting which, like, basically the entire HODINKEE team attended, we were all excited to see the new limited edition "Trilogy" of the Speedmaster, Seamaster, and Railmaster. And they were awesome, you'll hear more about them shortly (in video!) but we knew?they'd be awesome. What we did not know is that we'd see another Omega sports watch, one that comes slightly out of left field, was not included in this year's Basel press release, and at this moment, does not even exist on the Omega website. But it's awesome, and it's priced to move. In fact, this is one of the most commercially compelling watches of the show, and by virtue of that, maybe of the year 2017...

Well, the official first day of Baselworld 2017 is officially over. And it was a good one. Weve now seen the likes of Rolex, Patek Philippe, Tudor, Grand Seiko, Hermes, and more. There have been quite a few standout pieces, ranging from simple time-only watches to more inventive complications. Tonight, we sat down Ben, Louis, and Stephen to share their initial impressions of this years first batch of novelties. Please excuse the less-than-stellar stream quality C we're dealing with some typical European Airbnb wi-fi over here. Hopefully you can enjoy the video anyway....

Well, that's a wrap. On day one at least. We've got the entire HODINKEE editorial team on the ground in Switzerland all of this week to bring you in-depth coverage of the new releases and developments on display at Baselworld. There's a lot to sort through, with a nearly infinite number of watches to choose from. Here's a recap of the best things we saw during the first official day of Baselworld 2017. First Take: Ben And Louis Discuss The New Omega Releases At Baselworld 2017 (VIDEO) Omega is surely having one of the strongest fairs so far, showing not only some amazing limited editions that have the...

This is the new Longines Heritage 1945, a watch that I was particularly thrilled to see in the metal. I named it as one of my favorites of the show so far in our live report last night,?and I have to say this watch really speaks to me. The 1940s is arguably my favorite decade for watch design, and this simple calatrava-style case design with a flat bezel and a curved convex dial is just stunning. And it's now a production piece in the often-wonderful Longines Heritage line. But my connection to this watch goes a little deeper. This piece was inspired by an original Longines owned by the author. A little over one year ago, I re...

Breguets latest dress watch, the Classique 7147, is so Breguet it hurts. The Breguet Classique 7147 with enamel dial. Its quite simple, really. Its the Clasique 7147, right down to the movement, except the silver-plated guilloch dial with Roman numerals has been replaced by a dial in radiant white grand feu enamel with painted black Breguet numerals, and a poetic minute track (a dial we have seen in other Breguet models before this one). There are very few watchmakers I can think of that would introduce such a watch into its regular production line.? The best part is that the dial is in o...

If youre looking for a solid pilots watch but youre on a budget, Alpina is definitely a place you should be looking. Its most successful collection, the Startimer Pilot, offers several good options, including the Chronograph Big Date. Here we take a look at another solid entry, the new Startimer Pilot Automatic AL-525, a simple no-fuss take on a classic. The titanium-colored stainless steel AL-525 with a matte dark grey dial. There are four different executions of the Startimer Pilot Automatic AL-525, to be precise, the highlight being the titanium-colored version you see here. The watch is presented in a 44mm stainless ste...

Any conversation about watches that offer good value for money is bound to include NOMOS. It's been a core tenet of the brand since the very beginning and every year we get some new release that shocks us with its price tag to gears-and-hands ratio. With the new Club Campus though, NOMOS is trying to push it even further, offering a fun watch specifically targeted at first-time watch owners receiving their timepieces for special occasions. Oh, and they're awesome. The Club Campus is another move toward value-driven watches from NOMOS. Earlier this week we showed you the new Club Neomatik, which can be considered the sort of "p...

There's a lot more to modern watchmaking than what you see from the big guys. It's not that Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, and the like are doing anything wrong C they're showing a ton of great watches this year, believe us C it's just that they represent a certain perspective and approach. But a whole crop of independent watchmakers are offering an alternative take. Here, Stephen and Arthur take a look at some of the most creative watches at this year's Baselworld, including the Gronefeld brothers' 1941 Remontoire and Kari Voutilainen's Vingt-8 ISO, and discuss what the independents can add to the larger conversation. ADVER...

According to Eberhard, last year was a good year for the Bienne-based watchmaker, with sales up 13% worldwide. Eberhard attributes this to it's Scafograf 300 diver, which picked up a major win last year when the GPHG jury awarded it the Sports Watch of the year prize. And now there's a new watch being added to the family. The Eberhard Scafograf GMT Eberhard has decided to expand the collection for the first time by adding a GMT to the mix. It's a nifty little complication for divers who enjoy diving with their mechanical watches, but do it paired with a diving computer, or another professional device C or for those who l...

Bulgari has had a slew of new releases this year, including the world's thinnest automatic wristwatch in titanium, which is super cool in the metal. But another addition to the Italian house's collection is a brand new Serpenti, one that you can customize and order online and then have delivered to the closest Bulgari boutique. An example of the new Bulgari Serpenti with sunburst dial in green with green Karung strap. Big watch brands still haven't really embraced selling online (something we probably don't have to tell most of you). So it was pretty surprising and exciting to hear that Bulgari would be launching an entirely ...

You have probably seen (and if you are like me, drooled over) the new Longines Heritage 1945. However, Longines has released a number of attractive, cool, and relatively affordable timepieces this year at Baselworld. In addition to the 1945 and the?Heritage Flagship?there is the Record Collection C a simple selection of steel watches available in four sizes with a variety of dials. The most impressive thing about this collection is that it is the first Longines collection that is entirely COSC-certified. The Longines Record in 40mm with steel bracelet. The Longines Record is available in four sizes, 26mm, 30mm, 38.5mm, a...

Yesterday afternoon I told you about the new Longines Heritage 1945, a time-only watch with a story tied to an original slim, flat-bezeled watch that I happen to own. I got to spend more time with this new introduction today and I thought you guys might like to see a few live pictures of it, as well as what it looks like next to the watch that inspired it. The new heritage 1945 features a 40mm case and self-winding movement. Below you can see the new Longines Heritage 1945 as shown today in Baselworld. It's 40mm and automatic, so right there are two easily identifiable changes from my original watch. The crown is a bit d...

One of the biggest pieces of news at Baselworld this year was from Seiko. Since the introduction of Grand Seiko to the international market in 2010, what was once a bit of a watch insiders' secret has become a major global success story. For that reason, this was the year that Seiko announced that moving forward, Grand Seiko would be an independent brand. HODINKEE's own Jack Forster and Louis Westphalen got in front of the camera today to give us their thoughts on Grand Seiko past, present, and future, and to give us some insights on a few of the new vintage-inspired Seiko divers as well.? ...

Hot on the heels of all the Baselworld releases is something a bit different that comes from an unexpected brand C Larsson & Jennings. You may be familiar with Larsson & Jennings, a British company, for its Swiss-made quartz watches, but the brand has some big news C it's dropping the very first mechanical wristwatches in all three of its collections, the Lugano, Norse, and Saxon, all at once. The Saxon Automatic in PVD-coated steel. The Norse Mechanical in PVD-coated steel. Larsson & Jennings was founded in 2012 by Andrew Jennings and Joakim Larsson (whose share was boug...

Ok, so Baselworld might still be going on (it lasts until the end of the week), but team HODINKEE is on its way back to New York and London with hard drives full of photos and heads full of ideas for stories to bring you soon. Here's a look back at the four First Take videos we brought you live from Switzerland, offering inside looks at the collections of Rolex, Omega, Grand Seiko, and a handful of the best independent watchmakers around today. Cara And Arthur Discuss The New Rolex Releases Ben And Louis Discuss The New Omega Releases Stephe...

An in-house flyback chronograph for less than $4,000 is nothing to scoff at. One of these is now available from Frederique Constant, which introduced a typically classical interpretation just last week. We shared the basics?as soon as the watch was launched, and now a few days later were back with live images C including one of the new movement C and some more information. But our overall opinion hasnt changed C this really is a great watch for the money. The Frederique Constant Flyback Chronograph Manufacture. First up, lets take a look at the back of the watch, which offers a view of new FC-760 caliber. This is a movemen...

Even before qualifying as a vintage-inspired pilots watch, the latest Sinn 103 is, first and foremost, a proper tool watch. The chronograph is paired with a bi-directional, 60-minute countdown bezel, day and date indications at three oclock, screw-down pushers and crown guards to protect the mechanism, as well as an anti-reflective coating on the front sapphire crystal. Some of these typically incur an extra cost, but Sinn provides it all for under $2,600 on a very sturdy stainless steel bracelet with solid end-links (and even less on a strap). Heuer Bundeswehr chronograph. For all these reasons, the Sinn 103 St Sa is a pop...

Rado isnt a brand typically associated with dive watches, much less vintage-inspired ones. But amidst all the retro subaquatic goodness from the usual suspects that was on full display at Baselworld came this little sleeper, from a company known for its super slim ceramic dress watches no less. And, for me, it stole the show. This is the Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook. This watch pays homage to a vintage diver and makes few concessions to modernity at all. The HyperChrome Captain Cook is based on a watch of the same name (minus the "HyperChrome") that Rado made in 1962, and it bears a faithful and restrained resemblance to tha...

There very well might be no watch company more devoted to the creation of purpose-built tool watches than Frankfurt-based Sinn. And there are definitely no Sinn watches more purpose-built than those in the Einsatzzeitmesser series. Einsatzzeitmesser means "mission timer" in German, and Sinn has now devoted a dozen watches to timing various specific missions (fire rescue, SWAT teams, military divers, etc.), the latest being this years new EZM 12, which was designed to suit the very unique needs of air rescue professionals. I got to check it out at Baselworld last week, and boy was I impressed. This is a big watch, but it feels like a proper tool on the ...

Today's a big day for podcast fans everywhere. Hit podcast Serial and public radio stalwart This American Life have teamed up to create S-Town, a brand new show about a man named John living in a small Alabama town. Sure, the murder mystery is the main hook, but John is also an antique clock restorer and the opening sequence of Chapter 1 is a description of how to fix an old clock. Judging by the show's graphics, there's going to be a lot more where that comes from too. Producer Brian Reed interviewing clock restorer John McLemore at his home. (Photo: Andrea Morales) "When an antique clock breaks, a clock that has been telling...
