Best Super NEWS Watches
Welcome back to Friday Live! It finally feels like summer and we are here to have a little fun. This week Jack and Cara will take a look back at the most recent events in the watch world, including the announcement that Paul Newman's Paul Newman is up for auction this fall, as well as Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis' Cartier Tank. Then we will move on to a series of experiments with a real live Geiger Counter. As always we will end with a Q&A, so don't forget to send in your questions....
This week, we feature three watches that we have already covered at length on HODINKEE, simply because we love them so much. Let's start with the Patek Philippe reference 2526, one of the first automatic?Calatravas C and here its enamel dial bears the coveted Tiffany & Co. signature. There is also an early Rolex Milgauss reference 1019, one of the first antimagnetic wristwatches made by Rolex in the 1960s. You will also find a new-old-stock Lip chronograph with blue "Paul Newman" dial. Finally, a stunning coin watch from Piaget rounds out the selection. Rolex Milgauss Reference 1019, With Very Early Dial ...

Earlier this week we kicked off the summer season at the Todd Snyder boutique on Madison Square Park. The boutique features a variety of refined menswear offerings, ranging from linen suits and cashmere sweaters to swimwear and footwear. Additionally, Todd Snyder sells a variety of small antiques, Moscot eyewear, and vintage watches and accessories from the HODINKEE Shop. The watches will be a permanent feature of the store, so if you were not able to attend or are just passing by ,be sure to check them out. In the meantime, here are some photographs from the other night.?For more information you can visit Todd Snyder online.? ...
The Accutron is both a watch and a technology, and when the first Accutron tuning fork watches were first released to the public in 1960 they were seen as nothing short of revolutionary. Quartz watches were still a decade away, and while the Accutron wasn't the first electric watch C that honor goes to the Hamilton Electric 500, which debuted in 1957 to much fanfare C it was the first to achieve widespread success. Unfortunately for Hamilton their watch was rushed into production and exhibited significant initial teething problems, and when the Accutron came along, the Hamilton Electric 500 was doomed.? The Accutron Astronaut C the watch chosen by the C...
The Cartier Tank That Belonged To Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
While most people in the watch world have been lusting lately after Paul Newman's Paul Newman Daytona, I have been dreaming of a different watch. Don't get me wrong, Paul Newman's Paul Newman is probably the coolest collectible watch, almost by definition. Paul Newmans after all are a big reason we even have a vintage Rolex market to begin with, but for me there is another watch on the market that speaks to my soul far more than the Daytona. I'm talking about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' Cartier Tank watch.? The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Cartier Tank Watch, produced in 1962 and gifted to Jacqueline Kennedy in 1963. Much ...
Rewind: Talking Watches With 2017 NBA Champ Andre Iguodala
Last night the emerging dynasty known as the Golden State Warriors dethroned the Lebron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers to win their second NBA championship in the last three years. While Finals MVP Kevin Durant and sharpshooters Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson get most of the accolades, you may have noticed that Talking Watches veteran Andre Iguodala played a key role C dropping 20 points, including this thunderous dunk in the second quarter. Andre is also of course an avid watch collector, as we documented two years ago right after the Warriors won the 2015 NBA title. Thus we thought today was the perfect time to look back at And...
Business News: IWC Launches New Website Complete With E-Commerce Platform
It's no secret that the watch industry is moving in the direction of a much expanded Internet presence, with a number of luxury brands (such as Panerai, Cartier, Montblanc, and Jaeger-LeCoultre) building out e-commerce platforms on their company websites. You also may have noticed that Net-a-Porter and Mr. Porter have both been retailing luxury timepieces from the likes of Cartier, IWC, and Ressence since late last year, which is no coincidence. As you may recall, Richemont has been some form of shareholder (it has fluctuated over the years) in Net-a-Porter since 2010. That right there should have been a sign of things to come, which bring me to today's announcement: IWC has relaunched their...
A Week On The Wrist: The Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance 'Water'
The Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance watches were first introduced in late 2016 and they generated a lot of interest among technically minded watch enthusiasts, as well as a certain amount of healthy skepticism. Resonance watches are very rare and tend to require a considerable amount of careful adjustment in order to get them to work C and to get them to deliver on their promise of better accuracy. However the system Armin Strom used to create a resonance effect seemed quite ingenious and as well, offered some pretty extraordinary visuals. We took a Hands-On look at one of the gold models in December of 2016, and were definitely impressed with what we saw, but we were not at that time a...
Hands-On: The Bell & Ross BR V1-92
I have said it before and I'll say it again C vintage-inspired watches were big this year at SIHH and Baselworld. First there was Jaeger-LeCoultre, then Omega, then Oris, and now Bell & Ross. Despite this trend being relatively new to the market, for Bell & Ross this is old news. This year at Baselworld, Bell & Ross released the third installment of vintage-inspired watches that they have produced since 1997, shortly after their founding in 1992. While other manufactures threw back to original mid-century designs and faux patina, Bell & Ross produced a fresh line of chronographs and three-hand watches, like the BR V1-92. The Bell & R...
Hands-On: The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Moon Phase And Retrograde Date In White Gold
One of the things that you learn again and again in reviewing, and looking at, and writing about watches is the importance of withholding judgement until you've actually seen a watch in the metal C and moreover, had a chance to wear it and see what it's like to operate it. This was definitely the case for me with the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Moonphase And Retrograde Date, which seemed an almost simplistic watch at first but which has a lot of small details that taken together make it a very enjoyable watch to discover and also, show how Vacheron's approach to watchmaking differs from that of its contemporaries and competitors. TheVacheron Constanti...
Hands-On: The Breguet Tradition Dame Reference 7038
Since its launch in 2005, the Breguet Tradition Collection has evolved into the one of the company's most recognizable lines. The basic layout of the Tradition Collection's movement was inspired, by the way, by the so-called souscription watches made during Breguet's lifetime C these could be bought "on subscription" (hence the name) and had a clean, distinctive movement design. This was hidden in the original souscription watches but it's front and center in the Tradition Collection. The Tradition Dame 7038, the first ever lady's wristwatch introduced into the collection, was launched at Baselworld 2016. This model was announced in advance of Baselworld 2017 and we're getting our hands on i...
Welcome to the eighth installment of Friday Live. This week Christie's watch specialist Eric Wind joins Cara in the HODINKEE HQ studio to discuss a few historically significant watches, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' Cartier Tank (see our coverage here), Babe Ruth's Cartier, and Lyndon B. Johnson's Hamilton and Patek Philippe. Eric will also give us some updates to his extensive look at the watches of U.S. presidents. To conclude, we'll be taking live questions form the audience (we promise to get to more questions this week) C so please drop them in the comments section below, or in the YouTube stream. Enjoy!...
Talking Watches: With Alton Brown
One thing watch guys are not, is reserved about their opinions. And one thing that seemingly every watch guy has a suggestion about is who we should interview for the next episode of Talking Watches. Today, we'll be satisfying a whole bunch of you who have been after us to sit down with this gentleman: author, chef, television host, pilot, and all around awesome guy Mr. Alton Brown. Alton is both a culinary and a showbiz powerhouse; his science-of-food series?Good Eats?is a classic and he's also hosted Iron Chef America?(which is back in production after a three-year absence) as well as this year's?Iron Chef Gauntlet. He's also toured with his live show, Eat Your Science.?Over the course of ...
Introducing: The Baume & Mercier Clifton Manual 1830 With The Twinspir Silicon Balance Spring
The Clifton Manual 1830 announcement was one that we missed at first, or at the very least, we missed it in terms of its potential importance for both Baume & Mercier and for the Richemont Group. The timing of the announcement might have had something to do with it, coming as it did just before Baselworld, but nonetheless, it's one we wanted to revisit now as it may have interesting implications moving forward.? The announcement was for a new watch: the Clifton Manual 1830, which is a hand-wound watch in a gold case, containing a new movement; the latter is the caliber?BM12-1975M. The big news here is that the movement incorporates new "Twinspir" technology C...
Introducing: The Ressence x Mr Porter Type 1 MRP, In Titanium And Rose Gold
Ressence and Mr Porter have partnered to create a new limited edition of watches that take advantage of Ressence's unique satellite time-telling system to create a new look. The partnership is something of a departure for both companies C Mr Porter, as you probably know, is one of the few authorized online retailers for luxury watches, with featured brands including IWC, Zenith, Junghans, Bremont, and Bell & Ross but in 2015 it also began to offer Ressence watches online as well. Mr Porter offers a range of Ressence watches including the types 1,3, and 5 and the partnership stands out from the other brands Mr Porter offers, both in terms of price and in terms of design. ...
Recommended Reading: Peter Speake-Marin Talks About Leaving His Namesake Brand And What Comes Next
This past weekend, there was some reporting that veteran watchmaker and all-around nice guy Peter Speake-Marin is leaving his eponymous watch brand. Speake-Marin (the brand) has been on an occasionally rocky trajectory offering everything from modified ETA-based pieces to some incredibly complex tourbillons. Now it'll continue to do so, just without its founder. Peter Speake-Marin, who hasn't owned a piece of the company that bears his name for a few years now, is departing and thanks to a new short interview published at A Timely Perspective, we know his plans. He'll be launching a new digital watchmaking education program at TheNakedWatchmaker.com. Peter ...
Introducing: The Swatch X You Lets You Design Your Own Custom Swatch
Swatch has just launched new product, which is also a new feature on the Swatch website: the ability to create your own custom Swatch. While Swatch already makes such a plethora of models and designs that the idea of designing your own might seem a bit redundant, choosing from existing models is never going to be quite the same as putting something together that's a bit more of your very own, which is what Swatch x You is meant to let you do. The basic procedure is quite straightforward. You pick a basic model on which to build, and then proceed to choose case color, dial color, upper and lower straps (you are free to choose different strap designs for both...
Some of the best known and most loved watches are those that have a name you know and a face you remember behind them. Notable examples include Gerald Genta, who was responsible for (among other things) the design of the original Royal Oak; Richard Mille, everyone one of whose watches bears the unmistakeable stamp of his design sensibility; Max Bsser, whose watches are not only unimaginable without him, but also could never have come from anyone else. And it's not just at the high end that watch designers sometimes get a share of the limelight; Baume & Mercier's Alexandre Peraldi is a well-known example, as is Davide Cerrato, formerly of Tudor and now designing for Montblanc. ...

Over the last couple of decades, Panerai has grown so far beyond the very first offerings that it had when it was first acquired by the Richemont Group, as to defy description; the company has made everything from some of the most underappreciated tourbillons in the business, to perpetual calendars, astronomical clocks, and pretty much everything else you can think of. Panerai watches have become not only the functional instrument and dive watches that originally made the brand's reputation among enthusiasts, but exercises in pure design as well and there are now so many different variations on the original theme that it's possible to find anything you might want in the catalogue C from seri...
