Welcome to Episode 16 of Friday Live! We have Cara, Jack, Jon, and Stephen all around the table C and we're going to try a little something new. Last week, you asked us anything, but this week we want to ask you something: If you had $15,000 to spend, and you had to buy three watches to wear for the rest of time, what three would you purchase and why? Let us know in the comments, and each editor will be picking their favorite answer to discuss along with their own picks. We will also chat about what watches are on our wrists and answer some more of your questions in our Live Q+A. Enjoy!...

There are very few events like Monterey Car Week. Flooding the small coastal scene of central California with an army of collectors, enthusiasts, and journalists, Car Week brings some of the most amazing cars in the world out into the sunshine. From Euro and American to Pre-War and Concepts, not unlike Baselworld, the sheer number of the events means it's impossible to see it all. As you might expect, thanks to the longstanding overlap in enthusiasm between cars and watches (and the nature of high-value car shows more generally), the watch spotting is simply off the charts. Here is what I found on wrist at just a handful of the best events, including the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, t...

Mido's Multifort watches have a name that goes back pretty far C the first time the company used the name was in 1934, for an early self-winding watch with a bumper-type winding rotor. Founded in 1918, Mido was a staple maker of solid, affordable, but always well-constructed wristwatches (with one of the more charming company mascots of 20th century watchmaking: Robi the Mido Robot, figures of which you can still occasionally find for sale). The modern versions of the Multifort are of course quite a bit larger than the original models, but they still have a great deal of graphic clarity in their designs, as well as a movement that offers a step up from a standard ETA caliber. ...

This week marks the return of vintage Longines dress watches, this time with an oversized reference 5559, quite close in looks to one of their recent releases. You will also see a new old stock Tudor Submariner 76100 with its characteristic "lollipop" hand; the watch also comes with its original box and papers. Two chronographs round out our selections, and each shows some dashing colors: the Heuer Skipper reference 7764 exhibits a stunning regatta counter, while the?Girard-Perregaux Olimpico reference 9075AF offers an uncommon dial, and light brown bezel. Longines Reference 5559, With Oversized Yellow Gold Case ...

The story of Czapek & Cie, a Swiss watch brand launched in 2011, is hardly without precedent in todays horological landscape. Its basic outline is well known to HODINKEE readers. The rights to a long-since-deceased watchmakers name were acquired and a brand crafting watches in his honor was born. Nothing crazy there. The deep blue hand guilloch dial is made from enamel. But if the name Czapek somehow feels more familiar than other recent revivals, its with good reason. The Czech-born Polish watchmaker Franciszek Czapek was the original partner of Antoni Norbert de Patek, before the latter began an association with Adr...

In the history of timekeeping, there have been periods during which multiple ways of reckoning time have existed. At the September 2017 meeting of the Horological Society of New York, Professor Kevin Birth will discuss several cases concerning political uses of horology in contexts of time pluralism. Cases to be discussed include late medieval York, Habsburg diplomacy, Fernando Woods hijacking of the 1859 New York Democratic Party Convention, the enforcement of liquor laws in 19th century England, and todays issues surrounding the leap second. Each case will explore different ways in which horology and politics become intertwined, and will explore how our current horological practices are v...

After staying out of the ambassador game for almost 20 years, Tudor brought soccer superstar?David Beckham?into the fold back in May, kicking off its "Born to Dare" campaign. In a shocking turn of events, Tudor has just announced another big name ambassador C the brand's first female ambassador, no less C in Lady Gaga. The Tudor Heritage Black Bay Red as seen on Lady Gaga's wrist (above). This is an interesting move for Tudor, to say the least. As a brand that traditionally focuses on tool-oriented men's watches, I don't think anyone could have seen this coming. Having already announced their first in-house chronograph (with t...

TAG Heuer has just announced the release of a special edition for the 50th Anniversary of the Gulf Racing Stripes C the Monaco Gulf Special Edition. First introduced in 1969, the Monaco was the first square waterproof automatic chronograph and quickly became a cult classic when Steve McQueen wore it in?Le Mans?(1971) as the racer Michael Delaney. In the film, Delaney is sponsored by Gulf Oil with their blue, white, and orange stripes visible on both his white racing suit and his Porsche 917. But the stripes themselves actually pre-date the movie, having first appeared in 1967. Steve McQueen wearing the original Heuer Monaco inLe Mans (1971). ...

By now you should already be aware that 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the Cartier Tank. As far as horological milestones go, it doesn't get much bigger than this. Though earlier this year Cartier was focused on the re-release of the?Panthre, it's now Tank time. Today we saw the unveiling of four new anniversary collections that range from the basic to the extravagant. The Tank Cintre Skeleton is most certainly the latter. The Cintre was first released back in 1921. While the Tank was first created in 1917, it didn't take Cartier long to start iterating on the design. The Tank Cintre, for example, was born in 1921. The n...

In case you somehow missed it, the Cartier Tank turns 100 this year. The iconic rectangular watch was designed and produced in 1917, with the first models hitting stores a little later in 1919. As you may know, the design of the watch was inspired by the horizontal section of the Renault tank during World War I. The story goes that in 1918 the prototype was offered to General John Joseph Pershing, commanding officer of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe at the time (though this prototype is yet to surface). Throughout the decades, that original Tank has spawned many iterations, including (but not limited to) the Tank Cintre, the Tank Anglaise, the Tank F...

It's the Tank's 100th birthday, and you knew all along that Cartier was going to celebrate in a big way. Today we're finally seeing the new models released for the centenary, and there is a pretty diverse range of offerings. What we've got here are six new versions of the Tank Louis Cartier (or LC for short), the most basic modern Tank. There are versions with diamonds and without, in pink and white gold, and in two different sizes. First up we've got a pair of Tanks without diamonds. To me, these are the two most worth paying attention to. They're good for men or women and the sizes and styling make them perfect for almost any s...

De Bethune is famous for their award-winning, space age watches. The architecture and aesthetics of the watches themselves are mesmerizing, but there is much more to De Bethune's watchmaking than high-level finishing and interesting design. The brand has a deep focus on horological engineering, exemplified by the balances used in their watches. With each iteration, De Bethune strives for measurable improvements in performance. I spoke with De Bethune co-founder Denis Flageollet to learn more. Denis Flageollet Nicholas ManousosWhat was De Bethune's motivation for moving beyond traditional balances in 2004 with the titanium/plat...

German tool watch company Sinn has released an anniversary edition commemorating its classic EZM 1 Mission Timer, which first debuted in 1997. The new version arrives in the form of the 500-piece limited edition EZM 1.1. This is a watch you definitely don't want to ignore. Like its predecessor from 20 years ago, which has enjoyed something of a cult following, the EZM 1.1 has been designed for optimum legibility and rapid time recording. Its a watch for professionals in the truest sense, and it comes with a host of technological enhancements that arent readily available in most modern sports watches.? The EZM 1 debuted in ...

Vintage chronographs are a recurring theme of this column, and this week we rounded up some pretty unusual examples from some of the most celebrated manufactures. We start with Universal Genve and a rose gold Compax issued to the Brazilian air force, before moving on to a rare Zenith Port Royal in titanium with an El Primero caliber. There is also a limited edition IWC Mark XII with a titanium case and a Doxa Sfygmos listed on Ebay to finish things off. Universal Genve Compax Ref. 124107, Issued To The Brazilian Air Force The Universal Genve Compax reference 124107 is a great vintage chronograph ...

The Grand Prix dHorlogerie de Genve (GPHG) has just announced the 72 pre-selected timepieces that will vie for the most prestigious awards in watchmaking later this year. Each of the 12 categories has been narrowed down to just six finalists, and some of the results may surprise you. These are the timepieces that the jury of the 17th Grand Prix, including our own Jack Forster, will vote on when they meet in Geneva just ahead of the November 8 awards ceremony. Without further ado, here are the watches in their respective prize categories. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Artistic Crafts ...

It is impossible to deny the fascination that surrounds watches worn by famous people. Just think about the "Paul Newman" Rolex Daytona, the "Ed White" Omega Speedmaster, or any of the great missing watches?that we compiled. The Heuer Carrera worn by actor James Garner obviously belongs in this category, so you can imagine what a big deal it was when the watch recently reemerged C especially since this allowed us to finally solve a long-standing mystery surrounding its custom dial. ? This whole story started with a single tweet?from two vintage Heuer enthusiasts. The pair shared a picture showing actor James Garner wearing a vintage Heuer Carrera?in the classic T...

Much has been made about the affinities that join performance cars to fine timepieces. And virtually every watch brand with a chronograph has entered the world of automobiles through an association or partnership of some kind. Far less has been said about watches and motorcycles though. But earlier this year, Baume & Mercier signaled a desire to bridge the worlds via a partnership with Indian Motorcycle Company, the oldest American motorcycle maker. Over a series of three days in Cayucos, California, I attended Wheels & Waves, a meet-up of insiders and influencers from around the world's motorcycle community. The attendee...

Today we're proud to announce the inaugural HODINKEE print magazine. While the magazine of course covers watches (and a lot of them), it also looks at collectible cars, architecture, travel, and style, adding even more context to the world of watches we cover every day online. It brings a new dimension to HODINKEE, complementing the stories you're used to seeing right here while showcasing the HODINKEE lifestyle in a whole new way. You're probably wondering why we're doing this now. Honestly, it's been a long time coming. We've wanted to do something in print for years, but decided to wait until we had the right people and the right moment to launch something spe...

If you're somewhat familiar with the retail scene in Paris, you may have heard of Merci: a store on the Boulevard Beaumarchais which was originally founded with two goals in mind. The first was to provide a kind of launch pad for new and emerging designers, and the second was to establish an endowment for supporting educational projects in Madagascar. As it happens, the Boulevard Beaumarchais is an auspiciously named street for a horological enterprise; it's named for Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, who is today best known for the Figaro plays on which Mozart's famous opera The Marriage of Figaro, is based. However, Beaumarchais started professional life as a watchmaker's apprentice, ...
