As a follow up to last year's Speedy Tuesday limited edition release from Omega and Fratello Watches, we have the Speedy Tuesday Ultraman, a tribute to?the original so-called Ultraman Speedmaster. The ?original Ultraman Speedmaster was identical to a standard Speedmaster, except for a distinctive orange center chronograph seconds hand. The model's name is thanks to its appearance on the TV show, "The Return Of Ultraman," which aired in 1971 C Ultraman himself was a highly popular TV character who originally appeared in 1966-67. The show is sometimes described as a kaiju show thanks to the inclusion of giant monsters in every episode (kaiju is Japanese for "strange beast") which in turn is a ...

Ulysse Nardin's new CEO, Patrick Pruniaux, has led an interesting professional life. Watch brand executives are usually drawn from two groups: industry lifers, who have lived and breathed watches for their entire careers, and business executives, who are perhaps more prized for their acumen about protecting shareholder value than for their bred-in-the-bone love of watches and watchmaking per se. Pruniaux has had an unusually broad range of positions C he began his career with LVMH in 2000, where he first handled wine and spirits for Latin America, but then went to TAG Heuer, where he oversaw international exports.? The Horological Society of New York's award-winning classes are on the road again! Classes will be held on Long Island, New York, over the weekend of August 11-12, and they will be hosted by London Jewelers. At HSNY's Horological Education classes, students discover what actually makes a watch tick. The hands-on classes are taught by HSNY's staff of professional watchmakers. Students work on a mechanical watch movement, studying the gear train, winding and setting mechanisms, and escapement. The weekend half-day classes cover everything taught during the individual evening classes held in New York. Enrollment is now open for the Long ...

Last night we got together with more than 150 HODINKEE readers in downtown Manhattan to celebrate all things watches in the heat of the New York City summer. Luckily there were plenty of chilly drinks on hand and a ton of great watches to talk about. A few hot new Baselworld releases made appearances, along with plenty of the classic vintage standbys you'd expect to see. The enthusiasm of our incredible community never ceases to amazing all of us (there were more than a dozen HODINKEE team members in attendance) and we look forward to hosting another great event soon.Thank you to everyone who came out to show your support! Let us know if you spot your wrist shot down below in the comments. ...

When you think of tourbillons and A. Lange and Sohne, my guess is your first thought goes to the Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon, or perhaps the bonkers Tourbograph. I get it, but the 1815 Tourbillon deserves some attention too, and Lange has just announced a new limited edition version with a bright white enamel dial. Hard to beat a classic white dial with a platinum case. For those who don't recall C or slept on Stephen's excellent look at the 1815 Tourbillon from a couple years back C this is no casual tourbillon. Originally announced in 2014, the 1815 Tourbillon mixes Lange's classic subtlety with an expansive and beautiful...

After six years of being defunct, cult-classic brand Ikepod is coming back later this year. The brand was originally launched back in 1994 by Oliver Ike and Marc Newson, but had some tough years, declaring bankruptcy in 2006, relaunching in 2008, and then finally shuttering in 2012 when Newson decided to divest himself from the brand. Since then it has sat untouched, but three investors and self-proclaimed Ikepod fans purchased the brand last year and are about to launch the first new Ikepod watches in six years. Let's take a look at what the new watches look like, how they differ from the originals, and how the company plans to attack a new type of marketplace. ...

Tucked away all the way up on Madison Avenue at 64th Street is the Vacheron Constantin boutique. Usually filled with the latest and greatest modern hits, this summer the brand's New York City home is exhibiting and selling a selection of remarkable vintage pieces as part of their "Collectionneurs" line. The boutique has nine fully serviced and authenticated vintage pieces on display (with two more arriving over the next week or so), ranging from a gorgeous platinum minute-repeating pocket watch from 1928 to the stunning reference 4178. All are on view and available now through the end of August. Here's a selection of a few of them just because we love 'em.? Plati...

Today we're excited to announce HODINKEE Radio, a new weekly podcast about the most interesting people we've met through a shared passion for watches. Every Monday we'll be bringing you a new conversation featuring some of these incredible personalities as well as our own editors and producers, all hosted by yours truly, HODINKEE managing editor Stephen Pulvirent. Here is a little teaser episode featuring Ben and myself explaining the motivation behind launching the show and why we're all so excited about it: While, sure, this is a watch podcast, it's not just a podcast about watches. It's a podcast about people. One of the best parts ...

The Grand Prix d'Horlogerie De Genve has announced the candidate watches for the 2018 edition of the Grand Prix. In addition to an expansion of participating jury members from 28 to 31 individuals (the jury is an eclectic mix and includes watchmakers, specialist horological journalists, retailers, collectors and more) the prize categories have been expanded too. One notable addition is the establishment of a Challenge Watch Prize, which is limited to watches priced under CHF 4,000 and which is open to smartwatches. This is apt to be a contentious category; the presence of smartwatches at the GPHG is certain to provoke a certain amount of controversy. There is one connected mechanical watch ...

The nice thing about watch brands that do everything in-house is that you can go back and figure out exactly how everything came together to form the watch that ends up on your wrist. With NOMOS, this means being able to trace things back to the very earliest brainstorming stages, through the entire design process (both aesthetic and technical), and then on into production and quality control. Back in 2016, Cara and Will paid a visit to NOMOS, checking out both the design studio in Berlin and the actual watchmaking facilities in Glashtte to get an in-depth look at the then-new Neomatik collection and how it came to be. From the ...

There has been no bigger trend in watches these last few years than that of the "homage watch." What we're talking about here are modern watches explicitly designed to recall a particular model or family from a brand's past. As vintage watches have gained popularity, contemporary watchmakers are looking to capture lightning a second time, building new collections on their former all-stars. When done right, the results can be incredible C though with everybody trying their hand at this strategy, there are a lot of homage watches to sort through. Here are five new examples of the trend that have our editors excited right now. Cara Barrett C Omega Seamaster 1948 Lim...

Earlier this year at SIHH we saw the release of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak "Jumbo" Extra-Thin reference 15202 in a new guise, this time with a polished bezel. It's the same classic Royal Oak Jumbo that we know and love (that I personally really, really love) and it might appear to be a plain old stainless steel watch to most C but plain old stainless steel it is not! No no, this watch is a monotone, two-metal watch, made of titanium and platinum.?This limited edition watch brought mixed reviews. Some loved it, some hated it: "The platinum will scratch differently than the titanium!" they said. "I love how shiny the bezel is compared to the rest of the watch!" others said (ok, I said that)...

Buckle up, buttercup, as this may well be peak Richard Mille. Nothing short of a wrist-full, the newly announced Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure is a high-tech chronograph that also happens to feature a tourbillon, a mountable compass, a level, and a hermetically sealed cache of water purification tablets. Oh, and it was born of a friendship between Richard Mille (the man) and Sylvester Stallone, as a sort of study into the kind of watch that John Rambo might have worn. You can't make this stuff up, and the RM 25-01 is a fittingly complicated, stupendously expensive, and very limited design from the brand with a penchant for all things buck wild.? Ini...

This week, the name of the game is rarity. A wide range of pieces that you just dont see everyday popped up on the market this week, including a Universal Geneve Film Compax, an Abercrombie & Fitch Heuer in stunning shape, and an early, gilt dial Submariner with a twist of sorts. To keep things interesting, theres also a desk clock of note. Weve got a little something for everyone today, at price points both accessible and ... otherwise. Universal Genve Film Compax After the Universal Geneve market first took off, everyone and their brother went digging through old watches in search of anything si...

Wandering the halls of Baselworld or SIHH, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of watches in front of you, forgetting the details of each. By the end, you end up with a head full of "watch" instead of a mental catalog of what you've actually encountered. However, each year there are a handful of pieces that cut through the noise and leave us eagerly awaiting the day they find their way to our office for a proper review. Coming out of Baselworld 2017, Stephen's most-anticipated piece was the deceptively simple Master Control from Jaeger-LeCoultre, updated with a 40s-inspired sector dial. Luckily, he got to see one of t...

Ming, a Malaysia-based micro brand that manufactures watches in Switzerland, has been around for only a single year, but in that time it's made a name for itself among the horological cognoscenti through great word-of-mouth and by producing watches of unimpeachable value proposition, such as the $900 17.01 manual-wind, time-only watch. Ming was formed by six passionate watch collectors and is spearheaded by its namesake, Ming Thein. A physicist by training, Thein wears, and has worn, several hats besides running his year-old watch venture. He's a commercial photographer, the chief of strategy at Hasselblad, and a former M&A and private equity guy. And, of course, he's a watch collector. ...

The Ryder Cup, a biennial tournament that pits Europe's greatest golfers against those from America, is one of the biggest events in the sport of golf. In a sport that is as thoroughly individual as they come,?it stands out for its ability to make teammates of rivals. Through a partnership with the PGA Tour of America, Omega is the official timekeeper of the Ryder Cup when it is played in the States, in addition to being the official watch chosen by the U.S. team. In the lead up to the next Ryder Cup, which starts September 28 in France, Omega has released its official Ryder Cup watch in the form of specially branded 41mm Seamaster Aqua Terra.?This is the Seamast...

There's a lot to be said for learning from the best. And American menswear designer and entrepreneur Todd Snyder has learned from the best at every stage of his career. When he first moved to New York City from his hometown of Ames, Iowa, with the goal of pursuing a career in clothing design, Snyder found himself working for none other than Ralph Lauren. Here is something I know many of you have been waiting for: the new Halios Seaforth GMT. After the first series of the original Seaforth sold out and then the subsequent offerings proved to be so popular that Halios's site was unable to survive the ordering process, the three-handers are in production and ordering for the Seaforth GMT starts today. Many of the specifics are identical to the original Seaforth (which I bought, and also reviewed here) and it is essentially the same Seaforth you know and love but rocking an ETA 2893-2 automatic with a "caller GMT" independent 24-hour display.? As I highlighted in my recent Tudor Black Bay GMT review, GMT watches typi...
