Another week, another selection of watches C and a great selection at that. This week weve found a number of impossibly rare pieces, including a platinum and diamond Patek with a matching bracelet and a seldom seen Abercrombie & Fitch Heuer, in clean and honest condition. For good measure, theres a military issued diver and an affordably priced dress piece to satisfy your inner debonair. Shall we get into it? Patek Philippe Ref. 2422 In Platinum With Diamond Dial In today's era of watch collecting, we've stood and watched as once-overlooked pieces skyrocketed in value. In other words, watches once t...

Few press releases are more welcome than those which outline a new GMT from Grand Seiko. Slotting into the brand's Sport Collection, the newly announced 9F86 Quartz GMT ports GS's well known SBGJ Hi-Beat GMT aesthetic into a slightly smaller and slightly sportier trim while also including a new version of their high-accuracy 9F quartz movement.? Measuring 39mm wide and 12.1mm thick, these new Sport Collection GMT's are smaller and a bit thinner than Grand Seiko's standard Hi Beat models (which are 40mm wide and 14mm thick). This new model range is based around the reference SBGN and is being introduced with an 800 piece LE this fall and two production models in e...

As we said yesterday, it's going to be a big fall, as we celebrate a full 10 years of HODINKEE. At the center of this season-long celebration is a special wristwatch built to celebrate where we're headed, but while paying respect to where we've been. In this case, this HODINKEE exclusive is much more than just another cool watch C it is an homage to a man who inspired me to fall in love with watches in the first place, the man who gave me the watch without which there would be no HODINKEE.?This is a special one to all of us. What Is It? Introducing the H10 Omega Speedmaster, a limited edition celebrating 10 years of HODINKEE. ...

In my ongoing quest to fill my plate at the buffet of gold watches, I've seen a classically-minded but fun-loving Mido and a Seiko diver that crossed a well-loved design with a shock of gold that was anything but stodgy. For my third foray into golden territory, I figured I'd opt for something decidedly more egalitarian C some "gold" for the people. I use quotes because not only does this watch not feature any actual gold, its case isn't even metal, precious or otherwise. The Casio A500WGA-9DF is casual, fun, and weightless on wrist. For around the price of a decent meal or a cheap oil change, the entirely loveable Casio A500W...

Dubai Watch Week and Christie's London have announced that on September 11th and 12th, they will host the first London-based edition of the international Horological Forum. The first Horological Forum debuted at Dubai Watch Week in 2015, and is intended to provide "a space for intellectual discussion between leading watch curators, pioneers, authors, historians, collectors, brands and industry professionals." ?Participating panelists include Greubel Forsey's Stephen Forsey; highly regarded English independent watchmaker Roger Smith; independent watchmakers Fiona Kruger and Peter Speake-Marin; and company CEOs such as Moser's Edouard Meylan, and Bovet's Pascal Raffy. ...

Its hard to believe, even for me, that it has been 10 years since I first translated wristwatch into Czech and registered the domain HODINKEE.com. Since then, Ive flown more than a million miles, seen tens of thousands of watches, written thousands of stories, and met an incredible number of friends along the way.?Weve grown so much from those early days of one man sitting sheepishly in the back corner of an Antiquorum auction to the world-class team of journalists, designers, and experts we have on staff today. HODINKEE has been such an incredible ride C and I am proud to say we are stronger than ever, seeing 100% traffic growth in the last 24 months, the launch of a beautiful print pr...

Yesterday, while we were celebrating Labor Day here in the United States, the Grand Prix dHorlogerie de Genve (GPHG) unveiled this year's crop of finalists. All the usual suspects are represented (except for the likes of Rolex, Omega, and Patek Philippe, who you might remember choose not to participate at all) and there is a pretty incredible diversity of watches no matter how you choose to slice it C technically, aesthetically, financially. Each of the 12 categories has been narrowed down to just six watches (from more than 20 in some instances), and it is from these final 72 watches that the winners will be chosen by the 31 jury members in early November. As ...

Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review here, and tell us which guests we should have on! With Episode 10 of HODINKEE Radio on the horizon, we thought it was about time that we bring you our very first bonus episode. While on a week-long video shoot in the Valle de Joux, Jack had the chance to spend a few hours with one of watchmaking's true modern titans, Philippe Dufour C and when you get a chance like this, you definitely make the most of it. Between flying drones through the alps and discussing chronograph calibers, we found some time to turn o...

To say that Baselworld is an institution in flux would be a colossal understatement. After Nick Hayek, Jr., announced on July 29 that Swatch Group would no longer participate, it took less than a week for Ren Kamm's 15-year run as CEO of MCH Group (which runs Baselworld and Art Basel) to come to an end. We knew the story was far from over, and now, almost one month later to the day, we're getting the next chapter: MCH Group has named an interim CEO, luxury veteran Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard. In an announcement made to the Zurich Stock Exchange yesterday (MCH Group is a publicly traded company, under the symbol SWX: MCHN, in case you're curious), Hoejsgaard said, "...

Early watches look deceptively like their modern descendants. They are familiar enough that one might assume the first watches were made to "keep time" just as watches do today. Not so. In fact, these early watches were actually indifferent timekeepers, more suited to symbolically representing time than reliably measuring it. Although technical advances over the next 200 years improved their performance, it was not until the end of the 18th century that ordinary watches became truly reliable timekeepers. The earliest watches were probably carried not so much because civilization required portable timekeepers, but rather because o...

What we have here is the latest in TAG Heuer's accessibly priced Aquaracer line of dive watches. They come with impressive water resistance to 300 meters and an automatic Caliber 5 movement, which is based the ETA 2824-2 (though there have been Sellita-based versions as well). ?The name attached to this watch is the Carbon Aquaracer, and indeed the bezel is made from lightweight carbon and black PVD steel, while the cases themselves are made of grade 5 titanium that's been PVD coated too. There are three different versions of this watch, and their variations are reflected in the dials, each of which features a carbon pattern and accents in either rose gold, yellow, or blue. ...

It probably comes as no surprise, but Richemont CEO Johann Rupert is a man invested in the future of craftsmanship. On the one hand, the businesses he controls (and, to a large extent, owns) wouldn't really work without trained hands and eyes ready to create intricate little objects of beauty and desire. But, his commitment goes much further than this. In a recent profile in the Financial Times' How To Spend It, journalist and author Nick Foulkes talks to Rupert about the creation of the Michelangelo Foundation, which is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of craftsmanship itself. The crafts range from boot making to the creation of intricate mo...

We've all been there, right? You're staring at your Macbook screen or deep into the glowing interior of a display case, and you think "That's the watch for me." But then, you're dragged back to reality, whether by a second thought or by trying the watch on, and realize "Oh no ... that's most certainly not going to work. Not at all." The disappointment is real, people. Sometimes there's a watch that you love, that ticks all the boxes for you in theory, but when it comes to sitting on your wrist, it just isn't meant to be. Here our editors round up watches that, for each of them, represent this dilemma perfectly. Cara Barrett C Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Aut...

There's a curveball or two also C you know, just for a little extra fun. Not all archives are created equal. Having a rich history is something that has to be earned C you can't just make it up after the fact (despite the number of brands that try) C?and Cartier has one of the strongest stories when it comes to watchmaking and design in the 20th century. From the Tank to the Santos to the Panthre, there are countless true icons and a consistency and quality that's tough to match. Luckily for us, Cartier has also taken great care to catalog its creations, keeping an outstanding physical archive of documents and watches for us to learn from today. On the occasion of the Cartier Mansion's re-opening in ...

Everybody and their brother seems to be grammin' these days, and for those of us who care about watches, it can be hard to keep up with all of the best watch content available. We're assuming, of course, that you already follow HODINKEE, the HODINKEE Shop, and the HODINKEE Magazine (and our editors), but if that's not enough watch content to keep you scrolling, liking, and commenting, then check out these other accounts, all of which are pretty popular around the HODINKEE office. I've done my best to pick profiles that bring something special to the table, whether it's a focus on a particular type of watch, insight into a special era, or a particularly polished approach to watch photography....

Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review here, and tell us which guests we should have on! I guess I'll come right out and admit it: the first time I met Tony Fadell, I was super nervous. It was during a press event for Nest, Tony's company that makes smart devices for the home (which he has since sold to Google), and I spotted him wearing a Patek Philippe ref. 5990 Nautilus Chronograph during the keynote presentation. After our formal post-speech interview, I asked him about his watch and instantly realized I had nothing to worry about. Tony is as f...

Team HODINKEE is out in LA for a week and if you haven't come by already, or at least don't plan to, you're doing it wrong. We kicked off things on Friday with an opening bash at the beautiful UTA Artist Space in Beverly Hills. Saturday morning we followed it up with a killer cars and coffee outside with appearances from the likes a Ferrari F40, a Porsche 959, a Zagato bodied Alfa Romeo, a Ferrari 250 Lusso, an unrestored 300SL C oh, and a Singer 911, an Emory 911, and a Ruf Yellowbird.?Immediately following that, Stephen hosted a live recording of HODINKEE Radio with the one and only Spike Feresten where?he told us all about going from serving at a bar in college to writing some of the most...

Since its inception, Urwerk has always been about pushing the boundaries of what a mechanical watch can be. Founders Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner continue to innovate in terms of both design and mechanics, while always using their solid watchmaking foundation to ground their work in the history of horology. Their latest creation, the UR-111C uses a totally new kind of time display that's a bit of a departure from the orbital satellite system that the brand is best known for. And it's a doozy. On the "front" there are two conical displays C jumping hours on the left and running minutes on the right C and a unique helix-shaped minutes indicator in the center that also has a retrograde fun...
