We knew we couldn't host Character Watch Week without a word from our man George Bamford. The enthusiastic Brit has practically written the book on character watch collaborations today. From his late-aughts, punk-rock days of placing Popeye on the dial of a Submariner C?because, why not? C?to his current status as the watch industry's go-to cartoon collaborator, creating fresh, exciting timepieces with everyone from Cookie Monster to Joe Cool, George Bamford is the unquestionable King of Characters. The Bamford London Snoopy 70th Anniversary GMT 'Classic' We recently chatted over Zoom, where he walked us through his dedication...

The year was 1990, and the members of N.W.A. had already become notorious for their incendiary debut album, Straight Outta Compton, which put South Central Los Angeles on the hip-hop map and more or less invented the genre of gangsta rap C terrifying the FBI along the way. So it was all the more amazing when this photograph came out. There was founding member Dr. Dre, looking hard as hell in a Raiders hat, a Jordan track jacket, a pair of K-Swiss, and wait is that a Mickey Mouse watch? Our pal Janette Beckman took the picture. You may remember her work as a pillar of HODINKEE 80s Week, earlier this year. Below she tells the story behind a photo C two photos,...

In the middle of the Kalahari desert lies a verdant green oasis that spans 5,791 square miles when it's flooded. It's the largest inland delta in the world, and it's home to the big five game animals: Rhinos, elephants, lions, buffalo, and leopards, not to mention over 400 species of birds. It's unlike anywhere else on the planet, and that's why it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's been referred to as the "Kalahari's Emerald." This is the Okavango Delta. From June through August, the delta experiences peak flooding and draws wildlife in from hundreds of miles, producing a massive concentrat...

It happened. I bravely took on HODINKEE Editor-in-Chief Jack Forster in a spirited debate on what makes a character watch a character watch C I made my case with facts and research C and what happened? Well, I'm back on the Space Jam beat, that's what. When last I covered the head-scratching phenomenon that is Space Jam-themed wristwatches, Undone had just unveiled the third themed watch from the slam-dunking Looney Tunes cinematic universe. At the time, I said something to the effect of "If there's a fourth one, please drop an anvil on my head." The writer ... after penning four articles about Space Jam. Photo: Kasia Milton...

Among living horologists, Philippe Dufour is the OG. He embodies the ideal of the independent Swiss master watchmaker as neatly as anyone bearing this mantle ever has, crafting watches by hand in Vallee de Joux, his always-puffing pipe practically an extension of his face. Owning even one of Dufour's creations is a rite of passage for the lucky few collectors capable of obtaining one. But there is a collector who assembled all four of Philippe Dufour's signed creations in his personal collection, a quest that took over a decade. Now he is letting that collection go, all at once, consigning it to Phillips for its November Geneva sale, which will be held over two d...

Tourbillons are not exactly a dime a dozen, but they have proliferated in variety to a degree that Abraham Louis Breguet never dreamed possible. We have conventional tourbillons, flying tourbillons, Gyrotourbillons, mult-axis tourbillons, ultra-thin tourbillons and more (lots more).? What we don't have a lot of, however, are central tourbillons and there's a simple reason.? Putting a tourbillon in the center of the movement comes with some challenges in terms of the going-train layout (the same is true of doing the same with a balance). It also means that you have to figure out where you are going to put the hands since you cannot sti...

One of the many world records currently held by Bulgari is for the world's thinnest minute repeater movement. That's the caliber BVL 362 Finissimo, which establishes its rights to being called "Finissimo" by virtue of being only 3.12mm thick. Bulgari has used it in a high jewelry watch before C specifically, in the Diva's Dream repeater (and prior to that, in the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater). In keeping with the company's apparent willingness and desire to use sophisticated, complicated movements in timepieces which are more normally found with undistinguished mechanical or quartz calibers, Bulgari has just introduced a new high jewelry repeater C the Divina M...

Ulysse Nardin turned 175 this year, and I'm not sure whether that fact surprised me or not when I opened a recent press release and read about it. The company is old, no doubt, and I've seen a number of their older marine chronometers and mid-century dress watches. But so many of its meaningful advancements are bound up in the mechanical watch renaissance that was itself, at least partially spearheaded by the company's longtime champion, the late Rolf Schnyder. In honor of the anniversary, UN is releasing the new Chronometry collection, which connects the company back to its historically significant role as a maker of marine chronometers. And of these new watches, a beautiful, grand feu enam...

If you're a regular HODINKEE reader, you've seen some of the mega-collections and mega-collectors we've featured in Talking Watches, and you probably spend more than your fair share of time ogling watches on Instagram, as well. What you might not have seen on IG, even if you're an avid watch lover, is a feed that goes by @vintagecharactertime. It's the IG feed of one Kerry Lewis, who began collecting character watches in 1969 (he was in the Marine Corps) and who, since then, has quietly put together a horological collection of astounding breadth and depth, consisting almost entirely of character watches. Say hello to Bulgari's new world timer. It comes in the guise of the multifaceted Octo Roma, the not-so-svelte model that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Octo Finissimo. We've got two different versions. First is a stainless steel one on a really great integrated bracelet. It's got a blue dial. Then there's a steel case coated with DLC. This latter one comes on a black textured rubber strap and has a matching black dial. Each is 41mm in diameter and 11.35mm thick and has 100 meters of water resistance. They're some sporty travel watches, and with the Octo Roma case, they appear to bring the same architectural look of...

Although physical trade shows continue to be problematic, thanks to the unpredictable behavior of you-know-what, that doesn't mean that the industry has given up entirely on the idea of doing them C in a safety-first format and strongly supported by digital media, of course. Starting tomorrow and running through Friday, September 3rd, Geneva Watch Days will take place, and the participating brands will be both showcasing existing pieces and introducing new ones. In some cases, entire new product lines will be launching, so the show will be worth watching for anyone interested in what's in the pipeline for the companies participating, and in how the industry is ad...

Greubel Forsey released the first version of its GMT watch ten years ago, in 2011. Over the past decade, it has evolved to become the company's signature timepiece C?after all, when you place an entire three-dimensional globe on a watch, how can it not? At Geneva Watch Days this morning, the La Chaux-de-Fonds watchmaker has announced the conclusion of its most worldly watch, with the GMT Earth Final Edition. Available in a limited 11-piece run, the GMT Earth Final Edition evolves the design of the original watch C?previously crafted in white gold and platinum C?with a new titanium construction for the case as well as the movement...

Fighter pilots usually get all the credit for being the most bad-ass pilots around. But fixed-wing aircraft "want" to fly by design; rotorcraft, on the other hand, do not. Piloting a helicopter is difficult, and piloting a helicopter to rescue someone in the Swiss Alps where the air is thin and the conditions are ever-changing is even harder. That's what Rega does, it's a non-profit Swiss organization that specializes in all things air rescue, as explained in their mission statement: We provide an around-the-clock service offering swift, expert assistance by air. In particular, we transport medical care to the casualty and help in emergency situations. This assis...

When the official Only Watch 2021 lineup dropped back in July, I remember one of the first watches that caught my attention was the Czapek Antarctique Rattrapante "Sunrise." A new split-seconds take on the brand's hit sport watch, which debuted just last year, all we had to go off on for the Only Watch release was a sketch C?no renderings or press images at all.? At Geneva Watch Days this week, Czapek surprisingly jumped the gun on its own Only Watch release by dropping the new Antarctique Rattrapante, a limited edition of 77 watches that takes the high-end chronograph complication and literally turns it inside out with the split...

With Geneva Watch Days officially kicking off tomorrow, Parmigiani Fleurier has fired the starting pistol by unveiling a refresh of its Tonda collection, just in time for the company's 25-year anniversary.? In 1996, Michel Parmigiani C?a world-renowned restorationist and dedicated supporter of Fleurisian watchmaking C?founded his namesake firm with the financial support of the affluent Sandoz family, who Michel had already been working with, in his capacity as a restorationist. For 25 years, Parmigiani Fleuer has operated in a silo of Swiss watchmaking, producing some of the most intricate and detailed watches under its own name, while also growing its operation ...

HODINKEE Radio is back! In the wake of Stephen's departure, James Stacey is stepping in to host a new format for the show that will feature in-depth discussions and behind-the-scenes chats about the wide world of watches, via a panel of Hodinkee's best and brightest personalities. This week, we have Nora, Jack, and Danny on the mics to chat about character watches, the cultural impact of AP's Black Panther, how Space Jam watches seem to hunt in packs, the latest from Grand Seiko, and the real name of the bird on the Corn Flakes box.?We're trying something new and we hope you love it. Just in time for Geneva Watch Days, here is the latest from the fine folks at Doxa, a limited edition re-thinking of an Aubry-era classic C the Sub 600T. Produced in partnership with Time+Tide (a watch blog and Doxa partner based in Australia), the new Sub 600T "Pacific" is an updated expression of a still-under-the-radar winner from the fab world of Doxa's back catalog.? Hopefully suggesting an eventual full line of multi-colored 600Ts, as of right now the new Sub 600T is being offered only in Pacific Blue, and production is limited to just 200 units. Further supporting a Pelagos-adjacent vibe, the Sub 600T has a 40mm brushed ti...

Based on Dan DaVinci Code Browns bestselling novel of the same name, Angels & Demons (2009) follows the exploits of Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks) as he gallivants across Rome and the Vatican trying to foil the murderous exploits of the secret society known as the Illuminati. With his slicked-back-hair and action-movie pedigree, Langdon is reminiscent of Nic Cages character Benjamin Franklin Gates in National Treasure C only Langdon doesn't wear a Rolex. His wristwatch is far more playful. Image courtesy, Columbia Pictures Why We're Watching It's the final day of Character Watch Week!...

Im new to the watch world. So new that this story should probably be filed under First Opinions. My background is in design, and my hobby is other people's drama, so here I am today thinking out loud about the Audemars Piguet Black Panther watch with you fine folks.?In my previous jobs, I spent a lot of time contemplating impact vs. intent in regard to objects. You make a chair not just because someone needs to sit, but because you want to put American design on the global map, or propose that upcycled-plywood is the way of the future. Then you release it into the world and whatever it becomes is out of your hands C a status symbol, a talking point, a source of ridicule. ...
