The notion that making movements in-house C either partly or entirely C is de rigueur for a fine watchmaking company is such a common assumption today that it's easy to forget what a recent practice it actually is. Most of the longer-lived fine watchmaking companies have a long history of using supplied movements (and in some of their most revered watches, to boot), but Jaeger-LeCoultre is one company for whom making its own movements is a real long-term tradition. JLC has supplied both ebauches and finished movements to other companies for many decades (to date, the company has over 1,200 movements to its credit). Jaeger-LeCoultre produced its first movement, according to company archives, ...

For the past year and a half, it's been tougher than usual to see watches in person. However, it's never been particularly easy to see and hear chiming complications in person C their cost and rarity mean that generally, you stand a better chance of finding a needle in a haystack (I can't remember the last time I saw one turn up at an enthusiast's get-together, albeit those don't happen terribly frequently these days, either).? However, from now until October 5th, if you happen to be in or near New York, you have a chance to see not one, but half a dozen chiming complications at Jaeger-LeCoultre's Sound Maker exhibition (you'll need to schedule your visit, don't ...

It's not the money that draws out interesting watches at the Goodwood Revival, although there's plenty of dough flying around. Racing isn't cheap, and racing rare, 50-plus-year-old cars that are worth tens of millions of dollars and need extensive maintenance is particularly pricey.? I thought I was living the high life by arriving in a helicopter (not mine, of course) when I looked over at the landing site nearby and saw a Sikorsky S-92 (a $27 million helicopter) parked nearby. As it turns out, Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll flew in on it. Nevertheless, the appreciation of old things C and bygone times C is a democratic affair at the Goodwood Revival. Ever...

Leaking earlier this morning and thus blowing the embargo for most outlets, this is the brand-new Vacheron Constantin Overseas "Everest" line. Comprised of two models, a chronograph and a dual time, these Everest models are a follow-up to the 2019 prototype Overseas worn by photographer and mountaineer Cory Richards. And yes, these new limited-edition models are both made of titanium. And yes, I love them.? Limited to 150 pieces of each, the Everest Overseas models are essentially titanium versions of existing steel models with grey-blue grained dials, warm orange accents, and glorious Cordura fabric straps (each also comes with ...

Back in May, news broke that Hamilton made a custom watch specifically for a video game C Far Cry 6. At the time, all we really knew was that the watch was in the game and that the special timepiece would be served up to any gamer who completes the game's first mission. We weren't sure if or when we'd ever get the chance to see the watch in the non-pixelated real world. Over the past four months, we've gotten more adjusted to concepts like NFTs. Maybe a non-fungible watch is just as desirable as a fungible piece. For the traditionalists out there, Hamilton has in fact created a real-world watch that we can strap to our very real wrists (unless you're one of those...

In Watch of the Week, we invite HODINKEE staffers and friends to explain why they love a certain piece. This week's columnist is the author of many delightful books, including the novels Super Sad True Love Story and Lake Success, and the memoir Little Failure. His next novel, Our Country Friends, is due out in November. ? A short while after becoming obsessed with watches, I invited myself to the West Village apartment of one Benjamin Clymer in the guise of a New Yorker writer penning a piece about his new hobby. I should have brought a bib such was the amount of drool dribbling off my chin as I inspected the timepieces Ben laid out before me.?Their provenance s...

The online watch and hip-hop communities came together once again this past weekend, after Atlanta rapper Lil Baby got busted wearing a fake Patek to the Met Gala. Now, anyone who helped drive Lil Baby's "Drip Too Hard" to 830 million Spotify streams knows the Atlanta rapper is a PP fan C the brand pops up less than 15 seconds into the track. But when he said "I bought a new Patek," he presumably thought he'd bought a real one. The offending watch. Image, Lil Baby's Instagram Then came the red carpet, where he was spotted wearing what seemed to be a Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711/1P "40th Annive...

Up in the Piedmont of Italy, the city of Torino (or, as English speakers call it, Turin) is steeped in history both automotive and royal. It was the birthplace of Fiat, as well as the seat of Savoy rule. So its a natural meeting spot for the cast of 70s-styled characters who make up Biscioni Torino. Theres a gent named Ale: Lanky, suited, sideburned, permanently smoking. Giovanni: A stay-pressed denim-obsessive whose top gear is as well-worn as his top three buttons are unused. And Nic: He, with a touch of a New York accent, who followed his love of cars and culture to Torino recently. They assemble weekly at local cafes, and monthly for countryside rides. And when theyre together, they ...

In the whole wide world, there are very few C?if any C?watchmakers more associated with the split-seconds chronograph today than A. Lange & Sohne. And that bond is so strong because of the Double Split and the Triple Split. The Double Split measures elapsed split time in both seconds and minutes; the Triple Split, then, measures elapsed split time in seconds, minutes, and hours. Watchmaking has yet to go further C?and it's hard to imagine theres much further to go. If you're at the point where you can't tell when a day has passed you by, even a six-figure wristwatch won't save you. "It could be none more split." C Steph...

Earlier this week, the Only Watch World Tour kicked off in Monaco. Each stop gives the public a chance to get up close to the 55 interesting and unique watches being offered at the auction, which takes place in Geneva on November 6th, 2021. Sadly, though the tour visits Dubai, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Macau, there's no North American location on the schedule. So when Tudor reached out with live photos of their Black Bay GMT for Only Watch, we figured you all would be keen to see the goods.? Based on a standard Black Bay GMT, this unique version is called the Black Bay GMT One for Only Watch 2021 and it features a desatura...

Last Wednesday evening, Jaeger-LeCoultre and HODINKEE hosted a group of HODINKEE and JLC fans at Jaeger-LeCoultre's Sound Maker exhibition in New York. The event is one of the most astonishing assemblages of complicated watchmaking in many years, bringing together timepieces from over a century. The exhibit includes repeaters, grand strike complications, and of course, Jaeger-LeCoultre's famous Memovox timepieces, which have set the standard for alarm watches since 1951. HODINKEE Editor-in-Chief Jack Forster was present as co-host, along with JLC US president Anne-Laure Ritter and JLC CEO Catherine Rnier. Among the exhibition's highl...

For all the talk escapements and their components tend to receive, there's very little thought about mainsprings, an essential component whose unfurling is as needed in portable timekeepers as any other part. Back in early 2020, our own Jack Forster confessed that despite his many years of interest in watches, he'd given very little thought to these coils. Well, you can probably imagine what he did about that. Jack dove deep C like really deep C into the history of the unheralded mainspring in a way that only he can. On this Sunday afternoon, pour a cup of coffee, sit back, and learn the answers to all the questions about the mai...

Well, well, well. Would you look at that? It's fall in the northern hemisphere. The third quarter of seasons. Pumpkin time. The Autumnal Equinox has arrived with a crisp breeze and an invitation to zip up that fleece and head outdoors.?Doesn't matter if you're heading off the grid or out to sea, there's a watch for that. And we're spending this week with the timepieces that scream that "go play outside!" C from rugged classics made to withstand the elements to newcomers that inspire a sense of adventure. Watch and learn as Cole puts a fish finder to the test. Stephen (alumni alert!) tackles the new Rolex Explorer. And Jack ponders the best watch for exiting human civilization ... forever. Ou...

Today Omega has announced the launch of the new Speedmaster Chronoscope Co-Axial Master Chronometer Chronographs. These are 43mm x 12.8mm watches, METAS/Master Chronometer certified, with a new co-axial hand-wound movement. The caliber 9908 is a hand-wound version of the automatic caliber 9900, and runs in 44 jewels at 28,800 vph. The movement is decorated with what Omega calls "arabesque" Geneva stripes, which, in a first for the company, are continued on the outer feet of the balance bridge as well. The most notable feature of all models, is the presence of three different chronograph scales.? On th...

For as long as I've been covering watches, the design, engineering and cultural links to the automotive world have been bountiful. Sure, watches and cars are essential tools for daily use and getting from A to B on time; that connection is clear. But they can also be a well for appreciation and understanding, one with untold depths that can only be plumbed through fastidious but happy learning, all in the name of enthusiasm. Shayan Bokale/Marqued. In a recent interview with the automotive publication Marqued, a venture of Porsche Digital, Mr. Ben Clymer and Mr. Eneuri Acosta, two of my colleagues known very well to the HODINKE...

In Watch of the Week, we invite HODINKEE staffers and friends to explain why they love a certain piece. This week's author is our brand editor, and the man with the best hair on the internet. My formative years took place in the suburban sprawl that is northern Houston. It's a comfortable place, enveloped by towering pine forests and far more McMansions than McDonald's. Today, my friends know me for being somewhat defensive of the Houston area (also for making fun of Dallas, but that's a story for another time). I have good reason to be. Despite being one of the largest and most diverse cities in America, it's not the kind of place that's known for being a vacati...

From the beginning, Laurent Ferriers aim was very clear: to deliver his personal interpretation of the horological theories proposed by his peers. Some of these principles were essentially functional, and Ferrier, mindful of his heritage, would work to improve them. Others were restricted by the limited technical means of their era. Such was the case with the natural escapement. In 1802, Abraham-Louis Breguet completed his first watch using the ultra efficient escapement. Unfortunately, Breguet was unable to ensure its reliability because of the manufacturing techniques and materials available at the time. Two hundred years later, Laurent Ferrier gave the natura...

It's the kick-off for an outdoor-themed week at HODINKEE and we've got Cole Pennington joining James to chat about their favorite adventures and the watches they'd likely pick for any given scenario, while considering the root of our fascination with watches and surviving in some of the world's most inhospitable areas (or even just a leisurely bike ride in the countryside!).? From fish-obsessed Casios to a deeper look at what makes a watch great for the theatres of lands, sea, and air, all you need is a love for watches and a thirst for the great outdoors. Thanks for listening! Show notes... ...
