The World's Thinnest Watch: The CST-01 On Kickstarter
Yesterday we told you about the Kickstarter-funded Pebble watch, an adaptable wrist-worn gadget. Well today we've got another Kickstarter find for you, but at the other end of the spectrum. The CST-01 from Central Standard Timing is a bare bones e-ink watch that can boast the thinnest profile of any watch on the planet. In the world of mechanical watches, anything under about 8mm thick can be called an ultra-thin, with the thinnest watches coming in around 4mm thick. But the CST-01 comes in at 0.8mm - that's not a typo, 0.8mm. Starting with a thin piece of stainless steel, Central Standard Timing etches out space for the e-ink display, micro-engergy cell, and Seiko Epson controller. It's an a...

Hands-On: With The Tudor Style Watches, A New Dress Watch With Casual Elements
When I say Tudor, you probably think of the Black Bay and Pelagos C the diver that needs no introduction. But, earlier this year, Tudor launched a new line of watches C the Tudor Style collection. In the official press images, these watches come across as pretty dressy, but you might be pleasantly surprised to find that they cover a wider range of categories in the metal. What do I mean by categories? Well cover this a bit more in-depth further down, but Im talking about categories that "watch guys" often consider, like venue, wardrobe, and heritage. For example, there are four different size options, from 28 mm to 41 mm, you can opt for a leather strap or metal bracelet, and the classic d...
Editorial: Too Much Hot Air About Helium Release Valves
The helium release valve is one of the most overused andmisunderstood components found on watches today. While it does no harm to include one, its function is extremely specific and only matters at all if you happen to be acommercial diver (that bothers to wear a watch). It's high time we cut through the mythology, so here's the low down on the helium release valve.? Brands large and small continue drilling extra holes in their cases and then touting the extreme capabilities of these watches, often erroneously associating the component with deeper depths and safer diving. Meanwhile, many na?ve watch buyers assume that a dive watch without a helium release valve i...
Pebble E-Paper Watch Set To Ship January 23rd
You can't get much horologically further from what we usually cover here at HODINKEE than the Pebble. Last year this watch (only a "watch" in the loosest sense of the word) became the most highly-funded Kickstarter project ever. And now, after a number of delays, the Pebble is set to ship January 23rd. ?Essentially the Pebble is an e-paper multi-tool that you wear on your wrist like a watch - and, oh yeah, it tells the time when it's not doing anything else. Originally the developers sought $100,000 via Kickstarter to develop their project and received a whopping $10,266,845. You can still check out the Kickstarter page here.?Over 85,000 units pre-sold is nothing if not impressive. While ther...

Breaking News: Harry Winston Is Acquired By The Swatch Group (Plus Some Things To Consider)
While there have been rumors that famed NY-based jeweler and watchmaker Harry Winston was in "sell-mode" for a while, we don't think anyone expected this.? In news coming from both side of the equation today, 100% of the Harry Winston company has been acquired by none other than the owner of Omega, Breguet, Hamilton, and like a zillion other watch brands, the Swatch Group. This marks a decided change for Winston, who was for a long time completely independent and privately held, and most recently, publicly traded but essentially independent.? To be fully acquired by a large conglomerate will mean a lot of changes to Winston, and we'll be anxious to see how this plays out. Here are some things ...

Hands-On: With The Absolutely Insane Blancpain X Fathoms (Live Pics, Official Pricing)
This is a good one, folks.? If you know anything about dive watches, you know that the Fifty Fathoms from Blancpain is often put in the same league as the Rolex Submariner when it comes to category-creating sport watches.? The 50 Fathoms, according to some, even pre-dates the Submariner by a year, and it was used by countless armed forces throughout the 20th century.Today, Blancpain continues the Fifty Fathoms line in a few different varieties, including this guy with a "no radiation" dial, a HODINKEE favorite.? But, the undisputed king of the Blancpain dive watches is this monster you see above, entitled the X Fathoms. The X...
Introducing The Girard-Perregaux 1966 Minute Repeater, Annual Calendar & Equation Of Time
We've been fans of Girard-Perregaux's 1966 line for some time now. A few months ago we gave you a hands-on look at the 1966 Annual Calendar with Equation of Time, and now Girard-Perregaux has upped the ante on this excellent watch with their Minute Repeater, Annual Calendar & Equation of time. At first glance this 1966 looks an awful lot like the model we showed you last time. The dial is laid out the same way, with the large date display between 1 and 2 o'clock, the equation of time scale between 4 and 5 o'clock, the month aperture at 7 o'clock, and the running seconds register at 9 o'clock. But, on closer inspection you...
The De Bethune DB25T (Live Pics)
The De Bethune DB25T Founded in 2002, De Bethune is a relatively fresh face in the world of horology. But in just a decade it has already made a name for itself as one of the top brands pushing horology into the 21st century. Here we look at the DB25T, a watch that is a stunner up front and reveals a cutting-edge movement when you turn it over. Blued Titanium Night Sky With White Gold Stars At first glance, the DB25T appears relatively straightforward. The 42mm case is anchored by the signature De Bethune skeletonized lugs and comes in at a hair over 10mm thick. The outer portion of the dial is ster...

Introducing A Few New Additions To The Arnold & Son HMS1 Collection
The Arnold & Son HMS1 Lineup Arnold & Son is a brand that you just don't hear about too often, even though they are a true Swiss manufacture with their roots in English chronometry. Recently we showed you their complicated DBS model, but here we have something more straightforward. These new additions to Arnold & Son's time-only HMS1 line have elegant dress watch styling with in-house, manually-wound, ultra-thin calibers inside.Though dress watches are traditionally on the smaller side, a number of brands have started producing classically inspired pieces in more modern 40 and 41mm sizes (Vacheron Constantin, for example). Arnold & Son fill this spot in...
When we watch nerds think of Portugal, admittedly, the first thing that comes to mind is IWCs line of nautical-inspired timepieces. But we recently stumbled upon another cool watch-related item from that seafaring Iberian nation, and this one actually has its origins therePortuguese cork watch straps. Thats right, cork. The Museu do Relogio (Watch Museum) in Alentejo, Portugal, about 300 kilometers from Lisbon, produces and sells these straps out of its gift shop, with proceeds benefiting the museum. The cork is sourced from within Portugal, where it is a native product - over 50% of the worlds cork comes from Portugal. Cork makes a great material for watch straps, given its hydrophobic...

A Week On The Wrist: The Vacheron Constantin 41mm Patrimony Traditionnelle Self-Winding
Dress watches are where my passion for horology began. As a young kid I would sit on my grandparents' couch, staring at my grandfather's gold Longines, with its glossy black dial, thin case, and tiny diamond at 12 o'clock. To me, it represented the pinnacle of adulthood - elegance, experience, knowledge, and all.?But the world looks very different now than it did when our grandparents grew up, and that totem of adulthood might look a little different as well. Few watchmakers, let alone true manufactures, have a history of producing dress watches so emblematic of the time in which they were made as Vacheron Constantin. Whether it's their rectangular watches from the 1920s and 30s, the now arc...
Hands-On: With The A. Lange & Sohne Richard Lange Boutique Edition
In March of 2014, I said that there are two directions a new Lange lover typically takes: either towards the Lange One (and its several off-shoots), or the Datograph. Both are great roads to travel, and in that same mini-review, I said that once one has explored the Lange 1 or chronograph category, it's common to head into the uniquely Lange world of the awesome Zeitwerk. But what if you care more for chronometry than complications? Then you head to the Richard Lange. Today, we take a hands-on look at not a new release from Lange, but just one of our favorite pieces in their collection C the Richard Lange Boutique Edition. Th...
