Hands-On: With The New Britain NA523 (Live Pics)
The NA523 On The Wrist A few months ago we told you about the New Britain Watch Corp., a new American watch brand making a high-quality Swiss product at a reasonable price. Well we finally got a chance to go hands-on with a New Britain NA523 and we have to say, that not without faults, there is a lot to like about this watch. The Heavy Metal Box Housing the NA 523 The NA523 comes in a military-style metal box that is a drab greenish-grey and extremely heavy. And we mean extremely heavy. You would be forgiven for thinking it is weighted, but it's just the heft of the materials themselves. Inside, the ...

He is a serial entrepreneur, with an impressive record to his name even before Zuckerberg asked him to come on and help lead Facebook as head of Market Development, a title which encompasses all forms of business development, including the role of overseeing acquisitions like Instagram. Yesterday Sotheby's New York held its Important Watches and Clocks sale at their Upper East Side headquarters. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the record-setting sale of the Duc D'Orlans Breguet Sympathique clock from 1835, a stunning clock with a docking pocket watch - yes, a docking pocket watch.Just looking at the Duc D'Orlans, you can tell you're staring at something impressive. The case is decorated with beautiful ormolu-mounted red tortoise shell, it stands at nearly two feet tall, and the amount of gold sculpture is staggering. But it's the little repeating watch perched on top that really makes the Duc D'Orlans special.?Abraham-Louis Breguet wanted to tackle the problem o...
In-Depth: The F.P.Journe Chronomtre Optimum Explained (VIDEO)
Say the name "FP Journe" and a certain set of watch collectors go all aflutter with boyish delight. ?Others? They just don't get it. ?You see, Journe, both the man and the brand, is simultaneously adored by a significant lot of seemingly smitten, almost sycophantic yet serious collectors, and still watch lovers en masse do not often take the time to fully understand this small manufacture of just 850 watches per year. ? And I admit even for myself, it took years of exposure to high-end watches and several hands-on experiences with Journe pieces to fully understand what makes this 13 year old brand so special. ??One thing is for sure, the more one understands about Journe the more you can app...

Introducing The MB&F HM5, All Your 70s Tech Dreams Come True
The last Horological Machine dropped way back in 2010, and its impact can still be felt. The HM4 conjured images of WWII fighter planes, pin-up girls, and the like. It's safe to say that the HM4 left the HM5 some pretty big shoes to fill. So, when 2011 rolled around and hype for HM5 was peaking, MB&F did a 180 and released their LM1, showing off some serious classic watchmaking prowess with the help of Kari Voutilainen. Fast forward to present day, and we've got the HM5 everybody's been waiting for. Horological Machine #5 takes a decisive step back from where #4 left off. At first glance, you won't see any jaw dropping shapes...
The Man's Guide to Buying a Watch Episode 3: Form Versus Function
In the third installment of IWC's "The Man's Guide To Buying A Watch," we talk about form vs function.? Here you will hear from IWC's head of pre-development Sebastien Dordor.? You will get a background on some of the thought that goes into the pre-design process, such as what materials make sense for certain lines.? You will also hear from brand architect Chris Grainer, the man responsible for the environments in which you "experience" IWC - aka the amazing boutiques around the world (such as this one in NY).? This is a good one, folks....
Found: A Massive 46mm Patek Philippe From 1955 For Sale At Sotheby's
When you think Patek Philippe, especially Patek Philippe from 1955, the term "massive" rarely comes to mind.? But a watch for sale at Sotheby's NYC tomorrow is changing that, because this bad boy is a full-on 46mm in diameter, and it's got the vintage watch world buzzing. The average Patek watch of the day, time-only or complicated, was around 35mm.? There are records of Patek making two other pieces in this enormous 46mm size - a full 11mm larger than the average watch of the day essentially the same size as your modern IWC Big Pilot or Panerai - but they were both aviator's chronographs - not a time-only "dress" watch.? And that is what makes this particular watch so special and so curious....
Introducing The Arnold & Son DBS, Bringing Sidereal Time Into Focus
Arnold & Son hails from La Chaux-de-Fonds in the heart of the Swiss watchmaking industry, and carries the distinction "Since 1764" in the by-line. They tout a robust history of crafting maritime instrumentation for the British government. Heck, even John Roger, the "Son" bit of the Arnold & Son is said to have worked closely with none other than Abraham-Louis Breguet. Right about now you may be asking yourself how it stands to reason that the Arnold & Son just doesn't ring a bell. Turns out, like a lot of historic brands, there was a few gaps in the lineage, and it's taken some creativity and a lot of ingenuity to get back on the scene.Fortunately, Arnold & Son does have a lo...

Introducing The JEANRICHARD 1681 and Terrascope
For many years, JEANRICHARD has been one of those quiet achievers of the watch world, making no fuss, good quality contemporary watches. But just because theyve been quiet doesnt mean they havent been busy. For the last few years JEANRICHARD have been busy in the quiet hills of La Chaux De-Fonds, developing their own in house calibre, the JR1000, which forms the basis of the brand's collections, and ensuring continued supply in a post-ETA watch marketplace.?JEANRICHARD has also been re-thinking its entire collection; of which our favourite would have to be the 1681 ?($6,400), named for the year when Daniel Jean Richard created his first watch. Hands-On: With the Monoposto, Autodromo's First Mechanical Watch (Live Pics)
The Autodromo Monoposto, Matte Silver Dial A few weeks ago we gave you an early look at the Monoposto, the first mechanical watch from Autodromo, a cool, well-conceived upstart based right here in NYC. Inspired by mid-century Italian grand prix cars, the Monoposto combines serious motoring heritage with very wearable style. Today we give you a hands-on look at this limited edition automatic. At 43mm, the Monoposto is starting to get up there in size, but it wears nicely. The tapered case sits nicely on the wrist and the thin, turned bezel makes the watch appear a millimeter or two smaller than it really is. The wire lugs might make changing straps a little fiddly, b...

Introducing The Limited Edition Girard-Perregaux ww.tc Chrono White Ceramic
The WWTC line from Girard-Perregaux has always been a favorite among watch-collecting globetrotters because it offers both a true world-time complication (showing 24 timezones at once!) with a manufacture fly-back chronograph, for about half the price of something you might find from the likes of Patek, VC, ALS, or Vacheron. ?Today we see a brand new limited edition WWTC, with a case of white ceramic. This new world-time fly-back chrono is all about contrast, and against the bright white ceramic case, you'll see black pushers, crown, and rubber strap.
