A while back we showed you a rare Patek Philippe World-Timer (reference 5110 J) that was specially ordered by the Government of Qatar and with "Doha" on the dial instead of Moscow. Today we are showing you another spectacular watch from Patek aimed toward the Middle East: a limited reference 5130 P, one of 150 made of platinum with an emerald green center disc and MECCA printed in green on the dial (in place of MOSCOW or DOHA as it is in the same time zone as those two cities). This watch would be great for the King of Saudi Arabia (officially known as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques at Mecca and Medina), one of the many Saudi Princes, or any Muslim planning their Hajj. The emer...

We spent the first half of this week showing you a super complicated, super expensive watch from IWC. The Portuguese Siderale Scafusia is one impressive beast, but we wouldn't say that's who IWC really is and for you, Joe HODINKEE-reader, it's pretty cool to look and hear about but odds are you won't be placing an order any time soon. The IWC you see above, on the other hand, can be used a model for your very next purchase. It is an early 1960s IWC dress watch with lovely black dial and an automatic movement. Most of the vintage IWC dress watches you see come with a simple manually wound caliber, but this one is a cut above. We also happen to think it just looks great. So, if your daily l...

The Audemars Piguet ref 25820 is the classic perpetual calendar of the Royal Oak line. This reference is usually seen with a dial of blue or white, so when I spotted one with an anthracite dial at the offices of Antiquroum, I took notice.?Officially called the Quantieme Perpetuel Automatic, the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar has been in production since 1978. This example was made in 1997 and thankfully looks as though it has never been polished, gracefully showing its age around the octagonal bezel and case while retaining its trademark crisp edges. Of particular note here are the lack of any protruding pushers or crowns for adjusting the calendar. The quick-set buttons hidden along the case ...

Now THIS is a movement.Earlier this year we told you about some watches sold by Christies New York - in particular, one that belonged to James Ward Packard, the founder of Packard Motor Car Company and also a significant watch collector. The unique Vacheron Constantin 20k grand complication dating to 1918 sold for a whopping $1.8 million. Happily for the ultra high end horology loving public the watch was purchased by the Vacheron Constantin museum, meaning that the chances are good that it wont be locked away in a vault for the next century.Alex Ghotbi, of VCs discussion forum The Hour Lounge, has posted an amazing series of live pictures of this amazingly important and complicated piece...

In their continuing quest to secure the most dominant names in the sports arena, both Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille have each signed new world-class athletes to represent their brands. Audemars Piguet has teamed up with current world #1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic, just in time to send him to the US Open in style. Richard Mille has sided with highly accomplished Argentinian Polo player Pablo MacDonough.?The Irish Argentine Pablo MacDonough plays for top Argentina Polo team, Ellerstina, where he won the 2010 Argentinian Triple Crown. His career boasts no less than 9 titles, including 4 Hurlingham Open wins. As with all the sports you see RM ambassadors, Polo is a highly physical activit...

Today marked the selection of three winners of the book Patek Philippe in America Reference Guide: Volume I Men's Wristwatches by John Reardon. Our winners are Jason, Jimmy Margulies, and Brandon. Congratulations! All were shocked and surprised by their good fortune!...

Earlier this week, we saw one of the few remaining Heuer mysteries cracked under the will of Jeff Stein and company. Today, we've found a look at an entire line from Heuer that you're likely unfamiliar with, the Easy Rider.?A low cost alternative to Japanese quartz watches, the Easy Rider made a short appearance in the early 70's with a price tag of 50 bucks. The Easy Rider featured some great names of the day to capitalize on the growing popularity of racing sports (and department stores?). With a funky case, bright colors, innovative materials and seriously finicky movement that was never meant to be fixed, this Heuer is worth remembering. ?Read the full story over at Calibre 11 right here...

Mike Horn.? You might not know his name, but you've probably heard of him before.? He's the real life version of Dos Equis' "The Most Interesting Man In The World" character.? Blasphemy you say?? Well how about this for example: in 1999 he circumnavigated the Earth along the equator, using only his feet, bicycles and small non-motorized boats.?Still not impressed?? In 2006?he and his partner were?the first to travel to, and reach the North Pole on foot...in total darkness.? So it comes as no surprise that he has a watch branded with his name: the Panerai PAM 307.The Panerai 307 Luminor 1950 Pangaea Submersible Depth Gauge was a special edition timepiece produced in 2008.? A limited edition r...

Were big fans of the IWC Ingenieur. Its always had all the elements of a great timepiece: a long history as a tool watch extraordinaire, great Gerald Genta design DNA and a bombproof in-house movement. The Inge chronographs havent garnered nearly as much attention as their time-only brethren but we think thats about to change. A new Inge chrono was spotted on the wrist of IWCs CEO, Georges Kern, at SIHH earlier this year and since then, theres been much speculation about it. A prototype? Nope. Its the new Ingenieur Double Chronograph Titanium. Officially announced last month in IWCs enthusiast magazine, Watch Internat...

Two weeks ago, we announced a drawing to win the Rapport F3 Watch Winder we reviewed here. Response was enthusiastic to say the least. There must be a lot of readers who have watches that need winding. 255 to be exaxt. Thanks to all who entered and took the time to watch the review and identify the mystery guest who made a cameo on the video - Bertie the black cat. But for every contest, there can be only one winner so, sadly, 254 of you will have to keep winding your watches by hand or wearing more than one (not that we advocate that).Without further ado, the winner of the Rapport F3 Watch Winder is Roberto Martins. Congratulations, Roberto! You can expect your winder to arrive via FedEx wi...

Heuer collectors are a dedicated bunch, unearthing obscure case and caliber details with fervent pride. Occasionally, unidentified markings or reference numbers elude explanation, keeping entire communities relegated to speculation. One such mystery, the "Fab. Suisse" printing on select dials from the 50's and 60's, has proven particularly elusive. Thanks to some sleuthing by Mr. Jeff Stein of On The Dash, Heuer buffs can put the speculation to rest.?A number of theories had taken shape, hoping to explain the French abbreviation "Fab. Suisse." They ranged from Canadian market watches to marketing ploy boasting the fact the watches where Swiss made (a redundancy given the already present "Swi...

photo by Harry TanWithin the watch collecting community there are some names that command respect, people who are known authorities on certain brands, like the late Chuck Maddox with Omega or James Dowling with Rolex. When it comes to one of our favorite brands, A. Lange & Sohne, that person is Peter Chong. Peter was the founder of the Lange forum over on Timezone.com and established the Lange Owners Club, an exclusive group of lucky individuals who, as the name implies, own one of the fine timepieces from Glashtte. Peter is also an accomplished watch photographer and frequently posts his images on Timezone.com as well as on his own blog.Peter is so passionate about Lange and their wat...

When Blake and I were in Basel this year, we agreed on one thing C Zenith had the one of the strongest consumer-oriented collections at the show, at some of the most reasonable prices (see here for a quick look). So, when we returned to the states, we reached out to folks at Zenith and asked if we could review some of their new products. They were happy to lend us anything we wanted, but the more we thought about it, the more we thought it made sense to start at the beginning, or rather the new beginning of Zenith. So, here is a detailed, week-long review of the watch that relaunched Zenith into the eyes of real watch fans the world over, the Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth Chronograph. ...

If there is one thing to know about the AP Royal Oak (not the Offshores, but the real deal RO's), it's that steel cases and steel bracelets are pretty much de rigeuer.? But, it looks like the Royal Oak may be getting a new case made of titanium and a new strap made of rubber, at least according to PGA golfer Graeme McDowell's tweet.?Graeme sent out the image above via Twitter sunday morning saying "Check out the watch both Darren and Miguel are wearing. New prototype titanium Audemars Piguet golf watch. #AP #quality".? The Darren he is referring to is of course Darren Clarke and the Miguel would be Miguel Jimenez, both other PGA players. The watch appears to be a traditional Royal Oak much in...

We once called the Master Clock System from Patek Philippe the would-be love child of the venerable Swiss watchmaker and super high-end audio make McIntosh.? It looks like McIntosh have answered our calls and actually made a clock of their own, without the help of Patek or anyone else.?Resembling the epic McIntosh componentry of yesteryear, this quartz mantle clock is constructed of the same materials and in the same dimensions of a McIntosh power amp, only the two meters read hours and minutes. The MCLK12, as it's called, can even be controlled by other McIntosh components.? The two readouts are, though quartz powered, retrograde displays.?It doesn't come cheap at $2,000 but the thing is be...

Take a look at the ad below.? You'll notice first that it was published in Playboy circa 1969, which we can say, in spite of any hard evidence or knowledge of the media landscape of the mid-20th century, was a really cool magazine at the time.? Then, when you read what the ad has to say, you'll notice that although the Carrera is perhaps the model most closely associated with automobiles, sharing the name with a particular Porsche you may have heard of (all three were released simultaneously with Caliber 11 automatic chronographs but both the Carrera and Autavia existed earlier with manual calibers) and the Monaco is the most famous (and was "styled by a *nameless* Swiss designer"), i...

IWC Schaffhausen has been keeping the wrists of discerning gentleman stylish for the past 140 years. As of this summer, you can also look to the Swiss-based watch manufacturer for recommendations on your "lifestyle" choices too.? For as long as we can remember, watch companies have tried to tell us that wearing their timepieces will provide us a life of luxury and glamour, usually somewhere in the South of France.? Now, IWC tells us exactly how to accomplish that, or at least how to look like we've accomplished that, via a pretty cool partnership. In addition to their re-modeled website (which we showed you here), IWC has teamed up with global online menswear retailer, Mr. Porter. With design...

Panerai makes some cool stuff (see this year's bronze badboy or L'Astronomo), but some have come out in critique of the Italian designed, Swiss made watchmaker saying the cases are simply too large, and the use of ETA/Unitas movements do not warrant the prices.? The Panerai 338 answers both of those charges, and how.Launched at SIHH 2010, the PAM 338 is a totally natural 42mm in diameter and thinner than any previous 42mm Panerai.? The thinness of the case is made possible by the use of a totally in-house produced caliber, an ultra thin-caliber at that.? The P999/1 is only 3.4mm thick, and is a simple hand-wound movement that offers up a 60 hour power reserve. The watch is water resistant to...

At HODINKEE we rarely talk about the digital side of life. And, lets be honest here, thats because digital watches (while being great for what they are) are often so very boring. We do make exceptions though, and one of the digital brands we feature a bit here is New York mob Nooka (the Zirc is a particular favourite). Nooka are into displaying time in non-traditional formats - hands and numbers being very old hat.?So we were a little bemused when we saw the images of the latest Nooka; gone is the square case and funky digi-dots.? This Nooka actually looks like a normal watch!? Sure its got that clean modern design thing going on, but its also got hands and regular hour markers. Whats w...

The story of 94 year old Charles Woehrle, a former prisoner of war and proud Patek Philippe owner, captured the attention of the media last month when he made an appearance on NBC's Today show to tell of how he had ordered a Patek wristwatch while imprisoned during the second world war, how much joy the watch brought him, and then sadly, how the watch had been stolen from him years later back in the US.? His niece, Louise, was making a film on her uncle's time in prison camp and contacted Patek Philippe about his story.? Patek tracked down a watch very similar to the one he had worn and lost, and presented it to him.? The result was an article in the NY Times and a fabulous human interest st...
