Best Super NEWS Watches

If you thought the relationship between cars and watches was just an old clich, I invite you to go take a short detour via Petrolicious, where you might recognize a few "Talking Watches" guests, such as Phil Toledano and Matt Jacobson, talking about some of their bigger and louder toys in their collection. We're all big fans of the classic car website and to be honest it's not unusual for one of our editors to get caught watching one of Petrolicious' superb videos.?This week, and thanks to Ted Gushue, we have an excuse to read it for research. The site's editorial director recently sat down with A. Lange & Sohne CEO Wilhem Schmid to talk about the watch execs position on branding (Lan...

Yesterday we published a story?in which our editors looked at the watches from the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) and discussed which watches we'd personally enjoy wearing as "everyday" watches. The picks provoked some comments in which a lot of interesting points were raised C what's an everyday watch anyway, why were the watches we picked so (relatively) expensive, and so on. After looking through them (and replying to one or two) I thought it might be useful to place the choices in a little context, which is where the watches we picked were seen. Let's talk about the SIHH. The SIHH is a very particular slice of the watch industry as a...

Now that SIHH has passed, the new Baselworld novelties have started to roll in. Today we bring you two new watches from Bell & Ross, the BR03-92 Horograph and the limited edition Horolum. Both of these creations have the characteristic Bell & Ross square case with which we are all familiar but with some slight updates to the typical pilot-style look. ? The BR03-92 Horograph features a square micro-blasted steel case that measures 42mm on each side. Bell & Ross says the square case was inspired by the Bauhaus design movement, with its clean lines and "shape induced by function," but, if we're being honest, that makes absolutely no sense. There's ...

For the second week in a row, a vintage Heuer Autavia makes the cover of Bring A Loupe, but there is a good reason for its return. The 1st execution reference 2446 offered today could indeed become the most expensive Autavia publicly sold, if its asking price is met. Our other picks for the week include a full set Rolex Daytona 6263, a stunning Omega Seamaster 300, and a funky Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox nicknamed the "Snowdrop." But there is no doubt who the star of the show is C the Heuer 2446 is going to have collectors worldwide watching and waiting to see what happens. This is your Bring A Loupe for January 27, 2017. Heuer Autavia Reference 2446, In Its Rarest ...

At this year's SIHH, Audemars Piguet released a number of impressive pieces including the Diamond Outrage, Frosted Gold Royal Oak, the black ceramic Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, and some updates to the?Offshore. But the watch that seemed to have the most people excited was the re-issue of the classic Royal Oak Extra-Thin "Jumbo" in yellow gold. The last time we saw this watch in gold was in rose gold back in 2012, when it was released alongside the steel ref. 15202. This year AP decided to bring back the classic solid yellow gold Jumbo with equally cool blue and yellow gold dials, all with the automatic caliber 2121 movement inside. This is modern-vintage AP at its best. ...

Back in 2013, Blancpain resurrected the Bathyscaphe diver as a part of the Fifty Fathoms collection. It had a lot of vintage styling, rock-solid construction, and a nice movement inside too. There was a lot to love and I even put one through its paces in A Week On The Wrist, loving my time with it. If I had one complaint though, it was the watch's size. At 43mm, it was substantially bigger than the vintage divers that inspired it and a little chunky for me personally. Well, now that problem is solved. Blancpain is taking the same general Bathyscaphe design and introducing it in a smaller 38mm case size. This actually isn't the first 38mm Bathyscaphe. Earlie...

Just this morning Miss Serena Williams set an Open era record for most grand slam titles by defeating her sister Venus to take the 2017 Australian Open. This marks her 23rd open title making her the winningest player in the Open era and the second-most successful player of all time, behind just Margaret Court, who won 13 of her 24 titles prior to 1968 when the Open era began. What's more? She did so while wearing a really fancy watch! Serena Williams is an AP ambassador, but nowhere does it say she must wear a watch while competing. By now many of you know that Serena is an ambassador for Audemars Piguet, but nowhere in that c...

The watch industry employs hundreds of thousands of people in over 100 countries around the world. A career in the world of watches is a dream come true for many and tons have found their professional path in unique and unexpected ways. Last week we showed you our top picks for the best everyday watches from the 2017?Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH). Sure, there was some debate over what exactly qualifies as "everyday," but the spread of watches included both the simple and the complicated, as well as a mix of styles. Today we've got another round-up for you C this time of our favorite ladies' watches from the show. And, before anyone asks, no, the watches selected aren't all explicitly made for women or marketed to them, but that shouldn't stop anyone in 2017. Without further ado, let's get into it. Cara Barrett C Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Frosted White Gold, 37mm ...

The ATUM Pure is nothing new from Moritz Grossmann. It's been the core/entry-level offering from the Glashtte-based manufacture for quite a while now and it comes in a number of variations (including this controversial edition with a mesh dial). The latest version though is the ATUM Pure High Art, which takes the basic ATUM Pure and adds a highly-decorated movement under the hood. There's something cool about the fact that if you're wearing the ATUM Pure High Art, nobody around you would know that this is anything other than the basic ATUM Pure (assuming you hang around with watch nerds who would recognize a Moritz Grossmann watch in the first place). The ...

Tom Ford has just announced that it will be launching Tom Ford Timepieces in collaboration with the American firm Bedrock Manufacturing Company. If that names sounds familiar to you, it's because Bedrock is the Detroit-based parent company of Shinola (as well as Filson). Details are limited, but here's what we know right now. Tom Ford is a former Gucci creative director who started his namesake brand back in 2005. Since then, it's become one of the leaders in overt luxury, with hundreds of standalone and shop-in-shop retail locations around the world. The collection includes high-end men's tailoring, women's couture, fragrances and beauty products, shoes, b...

According to reports by Bloomberg and Reuters, four Richemont brand CEOs will be replaced over the coming months. This isn't the first big Richemont executive news to drop recently, with the conglomerate eliminating the group CEO position and elevating multiple brand CEOs to board positions?back in November. The latest changes will effect Dunhill, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Piaget, and Vacheron Constantin. The CEOs of all four of these brands will be stepping down (though who is doing so voluntarily is obviously a mystery), but only Dunhill is receiving an immediate replacement in Andrew Maag, head of Europe, Middle East, India, and Africa for fashion brand Burberry...

Last year, the Range Rover Special Edition from Zenith really stood out, since it was the very first to use a black ceramicised aluminum case. Its modern look and construction presented an interesting take on the famous El Primero, and only three months later the?two El Primero 36,000 vph with panda dials?were added to Zenith's main line-up, again using those black aluminum cases. Those new chronographs offered the opportunity to look back on the Range Rover Special Edition with a bit more context, and to examine once again the result of this cross-industry partnership. Associating a car and a watch is far from a revolutionary marketing concept. It has been...

The idea that consumers have more luxury sports watches to choose from is an exciting one, especially when the newcomers to this growing list are vintage models from the 1970s re-imagined for today. Girard-Perregaux contributions came last year, when the company brought back the Laureato as a limited edition. The watch made an encouraging return to its origins in terms of design, but many felt Girard-Perregaux was overreaching in terms of pricing, asking for almost $15,000 for a stainless steel watch that simply didn't compare to the competition. Girard-Perregaux wasted no time in expanding its offering, releasing a series of new references that are much more in line with consumer demands. ...

The Bulgari Roma in the incarnation you see here is a very cool watch in itself: a clear, strong, simple design with all the architectural precision you'd associate with a Bulgari Roma watch. You might recognize the general design, but what you might not know is that the first Bulgari Roma watch came out all the way back in 1975, at an extremely interesting period in the history of modern watchmaking.? The original Roma is of the same design generation that gave us the Royal Oak and the Nautilus, and, like those two watches, it wasn't an instant success. Acceptance and enthusiasm took time to evolve, and the more so because the original Roma wasn't even int...

After success with complicated watches featuring tourbillons, dead-beats, and remontoires, Dutch manufacture Gronefeld has introduced its simplest, least complicated watch to date. The 1941 Principia features a 226-part movement that is powered by a uni-directional winding mechanism weighted by a 22k solid gold full-sized rotor. This is the first automatic watch made by the independent watchmakers and it is named after their father's birth year and Sir Isaac Newton's studies on the "Philosophi? Naturalis Principia Mathematica." The watches themselves boast the high-end finishing that we expect from the Gronefelds and also allow the buyer to pick and choose the type of dial they want (light b...

To a special niche within the watch collecting community, military-issued watches are the object of great fascination. From WWII field watches to Milsubs and Kon-Tiki IDFs, a watch with a military-specific past is undoubtedly a special and rare thing that survives as a token from a life spent in a very specific sort of role. In my mind, better still is a military-issued watch whose original owner is not only still alive, but still loves his watches. All of this serves as an introduction to Philip "Moki" Martin, one of the most interesting and humble collectors I have ever met. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Moki still has the watch that was issued to him after graduating into the Underwater D...

What just seven days time can mean in the contemporary watch market is nothing short of astonishing. Each and every day, something new C?but also old C surfaces that's capable of inspiring not only debate, but genuine scholarship, and a good dose of?collectors' excitement too. This all makes one wonder what still remains out there,?yet to be discovered. On this week's hunt, we managed to uncover several scarce pieces, including a Breitling Unitime, Mathey-Tissot's take on the Type XX chronograph,?a gilt dial Zodiac, and a full-set Speedmaster.?Also of note is an especially early chronograph, representing a collaborative effort between Universal Genve and Gallet, with quite a backstory. We w...

Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review here, and tell us which guests we should have on! You might know Michael Weisberg as a watch dealer, but I think giving him that title doesnt really do him justice. In addition to selling watches (and really damn good ones, I might add), he also deals in vintage design and furniture, classic cars, art, and more. Furthermore, Michael is a true scholar of these things, with a personal library containing thousands of books, catalogs, and magazines. Whether you're looking for classic Rolex sport watches or rare P...

When you think of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, you almost certainly conjure up a stainless steel watch with a rich blue dial in your mind's eye. Yes, Gerald Genta's 1972 classic was originally envisioned as a steel watch through and through, and yes, the original Jumbo (and its modern counterpart, the ref. 15202) is just as awesome today as it was 46 years ago, but there are other Royal Oak models that deserve just as much love. I'm not talking about complicated renditions, or even the beloved Offshore. No, I'm talking about that same classic Jumbo, just rendered in rich 18k yellow gold. Trust me, if you're sleeping on this one, you're really, truly sleeping.? ...
