Sitting at the core of De Bethune's lineup, the DB28 has long represented a singular and very specific perspective on both watchmaking and watch design. Today, the quirky Swiss brand has announced the latest evolution of the DB28 format via the rather gorgeous DB28xs Starry Seas, which is essentially a DB28 in a smaller case. Complete with a beautiful hand-wound movement and a special dial execution, this "extra small" De Bethune seeks to port the brand's unique appeal into a more wearable and modern presence.? Starting with the case, the DB28xs Starry Seas measures 38.7mm wide and 7.4mm thick, with the case and hinged lugs both ...

Ever since we enthusiasts began turning this watch hobby on its head, the decision-making tree for purchasing a watch has sprouted innumerable branches. Some have breached your neighbor's fence and onto their property, spawning an HOA battle that'll likely sour the rest of your year. But for now, that's not important. What is important, however, is what happens when you look to buy a watch. You walk into a store or browse an e-commerce platform (hello, there) and realize it's just not that simple. You see, the enthusiast cohort made straps a cottage industry. One watch could become 100 watches if you had the strap options to make your watch feel like new each tim...

"It's a great 'Porsche people' event." Porsches in the parking lot of the hotel, including (from left) a Kaege backdated Targa and a Singer Reimagined. I was just a few feet away from Jerry Seinfeld C yes, that Jerry Seinfeld C as he stopped mid-sentence, watched, and pointed at his personal 550a as it drove past on a rebuilt VW bus transporter (built to look like the one that driver Art Bunker used to drive that very car to Sebring). It's the wild kind of moment that can only happen at Rennsport Reunion 7, the biggest gathering of Porsche collectors in the world. ...

Auction houses love their superlatives. So much so that most people C including myself C are often dismissive. Now that fall auction season is approaching and the houses are releasing their marquee lots for the year, my skepticism is naturally high to keep my latent enthusiasm in check. But, it's hard for me to disagree with the marketing speak this time. Sotheby's just announced one of the C if not definitively the C most important pairings of wristwatches in the history of its auction house. Two watches will cross the auction block this fall, inextricably tied by history and friendship: the last George Daniels Millennium watch and the very first Co-axial Annive...

Within the culture of watches that so often leans heavily on tradition, the French Creative seconde/seconde/ hasn't shied away from subverting the norms C and toying with them as founder Romaric Andr sees fit. Through irony, cheeky wordplay, and tiny but mighty graphic symbols that often replace the seconds hands of classic watches, seconde/seconde has made itself distinct in an oft-conservative industry, evolving in recent years to collaborate with some of the biggest names in the watchmaking world. Now, seconde/seconde/ has found its latest collaborator in Timex, and the duo unveils a tongue-in-cheek limited edition duo made with details referencing the nicknames any good connoisseur woul...

Heads up! We're about to publish our 80th episode of Talking Watches, and it's nothing short of something major. It's over one hour long and exceedingly nerdy, and C plot twist C it's also the first episode in our history that isn't hosted by a Hodinkee editor. To celebrate our biggest episode in the history of Talking Watches, we thought it would be fun to hold an exclusive screening next week in New York City, and we'd love to have you join us for the event.? So, if you're free in NYC on the evening of October 11th, please RSVP to [email protected] [Editors Note: Reservations are now closed]. We have limited seats availab...

One of the biggest single-owner watch collections in the world, built up over the past 40 years, is coming to auction this November. When a headline-grabbing watch came to auction over the past few years, there's a decent chance it ended up in the collection of Mohammed Zaman, who's been collecting since first purchasing a Rolex Day-Date in 1978.Zaman's collection includes some of the most important watches we've recently seen on the market: Of the four highlights Christie's has teased, all were sold at Phillips in the past four years. Zaman isn't the only mega collector selling his collection either. Patrick Getreide, owner of the OAK Collection C check out his Talking Watches here C is also...

I never would have thought that Baltic would release a perpetual calendar this year. Sure, it was a pice unique for Only Watch. But still, in six years since its founding, the French brand has grown to be one of the most beloved watch brands for people looking for affordable watches with a taste of the best of vintage design. So, a perpetual calendar? What would we see next? Was this the start of Baltic moving up-market and leaving their base behind? Not in the slightest. Baltic is still knocking it out of the park at that entry-level price point, and their new Hermtique Tourer is proof in the metal. ...

Hodinkee 10/10 lives here. Last year, we celebrated the first inaugural 10/10 celebration here at Hodinkee. It's one of two tentpole moments on our yearly calendars where The Hodinkee Shop aims to celebrate those who have chosen to make Hodinkee their destination for all things watches. The other time of year is Members Week, filled with unique programming geared specifically toward our community members. Well, it's October once again and we are right around the corner from our second-ever 10/10 event. For those of you who don't know the significance of this day, or why we chose this date, here's a brief rundown. Think of it like Hodi...

The Watch Library is a new charitable foundation "commited to preserving and promoting the world's watchmaking heritage." In September, it introduced a new digital platform that allows the public access to more than 320,000 archival documents. These come from sources like Europa Star, the International Watchmaking Museum (MIH), HSNY, and others. The Watch Library Foundation is organized as a charitable organization in Switzerland.? The Watch Library Foundation began when Genevan publisher Europa Star began digitizing its archives dating back to 1927. From there, Serge Maillard of Europa Star began seeking out archives across Europe, Japan, and the United States. ...

A. Lange & Sohne is perched neatly at the top of the horological food chain. A watch brand for the cognoscenti. It is most desired by people who really know about watchmaking. Of course, the industry evolves and expands. People like myself, who sit somewhere on the periphery of hardcore watch enthusiasm, are becoming increasingly familiar with the brand. This rise is likely due to the resurgence of interest in watches during the pandemic and the lack of availability chez Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, no doubt. But the increase of interest is, from what I now understand, wholly deserved. According to our very own Benjamin Clymer, Lange produces the fines...

Today, we are in Montecito, California, for the unveiling of a collaboration from two brands we didn't necessarily predict would collaborate C but maybe we should have? Louis Vuitton Watches, spearheaded by Jean Arnault, and Rexhep Rexhepi's Akrivia have come together to create a profoundly complicated timepiece that fuses the sensibilities (in both style and watchmaking tenets) of both houses in a truly fascinating way. Feast your eyes on the LVRR-01 Chronographe Sonnerie. It's a first-of-its-kind timepiece C in some ways C and it aligns with Arnault's vision of a revamped LV watchmaking outfit. And if you're going to share a watch dial with another name, who better than the most well-kno...

It's been ten years since Girard-Perregaux broke the long-standing technical rules of watchmaking. With the release of the Constant Escapement C a watch with a novel and proven design that made it one of the first true constant force escapements C GP had both a proven technical triumph and a watch that would net them the 'Aiguille D'Or' at the GPHG (Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Gene?ve). Now, the brand is back with a smaller, more refined release of the same general horological concept: the Neo Constant Escapement.? You may have seen GP "soft launch" the Neo Constant Escapement if you were paying close attention to the Only Watch c...

Porsche Design just announced another entry to its growing stable of Chronograph 1 variants. This time it has found inspiration from the brand's deep history of cool and unusual variants of the Chronograph 1 original design. If you're a fan of the brand, you'll recognize it instantly. But no, this isn't a new Porsche Design "Military" C this is the Porsche Design "Utility." Utility is a fitting name for this new 250-piece limited edition, if for nothing else but the fact that it has a new utilitarian case made out of the brand's exclusive titanium carbide. This is the brand's first use of titanium carbide in a watch not tied to a...

There are few things that capture the imagination of a watch lover than the romance of watches in space. We all know the story of the Omega Speedmaster. The Speedmaster has carved its own place as one of the most iconic watches in history thanks in no small part to being "the moon watch." I'd imagine that a large number of non-readers who own a Speedmaster do so because of its spaceflight history. But over where astronauts are known as "cosmonauts," there's been another watch inextricably tied to space flight since 1994. Now, it's back in a new and updated form. Fortis made the Official Cosmonauts Chronograph back in 1994. The wa...

It's finally here. The modern spiritual successor to (my pick for) one of the best gold chronographs of all time: the Heuer ref. 1158 CHN. I'm a big fan of the original (and we'll dig into that in a bit) but TAG Heuer has put together a watch that ticks a lot of the classic boxes with the new TAG Heuer Carrera in 18K yellow gold with a gold dial. This is a 39mm "glassbox" Carrera, with the shaped crystal that accentuates the tachymeter on the bezel so it's readable at a ton of angles on the wrist. It's powered by the Calibre TH20-00 Automatic that sits in that 13.9mm case, which means you have a 30-minute counter at three o'clock...

Each week, we present a selection of our favorite watches from the pre-owned side of our collection. Captured by our talented in-house photographers, you get a closer look at what makes these watches so special. This week, we add some vintage to the list with a Patek Philippe Calatrava that is double signed by Gbelin, a two-faced Heuer, a black bezel end-of-the-line Rolex GMT, a Zenith with some colorful appeal, and the very first of the Panerai Due line. Two Legends, One Dial - Patek Philippe Calatrava, ref. 3445, "Gbelin" Click here for the Patek Philippe Calatrava, ref. 3445...

Over the past few years, the industry has seen an uptick in interest toward more environmentally sustainable practices. Panerai has its recycled eSteel. Oris has used recycled plastic dials (among plenty of other environmental projects they're pursuing, including transparency through their sustainability reports). And it's not just environmental practices that are slowly coming to the forefront, you also see brands like Chopard using "responsibly sourced gold" C including recycled material. TAG Heuer has made wild watches with lab-grown diamonds that likely couldn't be made without employing that technology. It's not just good for the environment, though; it's also good for business. ...
