With the holidays just around the corner and the year having nearly come to an end, for watch enthusiasts, that means it's time to look back on 2024 and reflect upon some of our favorite watches of the year.Over the past several days, we have shared our favorite budget watches of 2024 and our favorite dress watches of 2024, but today, we're taking it up a notch C our picks for our favorite complicated watches from the past year. From record-setting pocket watches to special tourbillons, no small order of Lumen, and even a watch with a truly digital complication, it's a varied and, well, complicated list. When you get through the list, be sure to hit the comments to let us know what complicat...

Massena Lab just dropped its latest project - a collaboration with Vulcain for a very small run of a very Massena take on the Vulcain Cricket Nautical. The original Cricket Nautical was very much a product of the early sixties, with the original model coming out in 1961. The personality most associated with this watch is physicist, mathematician, and deep-sea diver Hannes Keller, who ended up performing a record-setting dive of 222 meters while wearing the Cricket Nautical. Oh, and the dive record was witnessed and certified by the legend Jacques Cousteauno big deal. More than sixty years later, we've seen the modern revival of ...

Last week, Hublot introduced the third in a series of tourbillon watches in partnership with the artist and designer Samuel Ross. The man behind fashion label A-Cold-Wall* and eponymous design studio SR_A, Ross, is also known as Virgil Abloh's very first design assistant. The designer's relationship with Hublot started all the way back in 2019, having been awarded the Hublot Design Prize that year C an initiative started in 2015 in part by the legendary Jean-Claude Biver to seek out young and upcoming talents in the design world. A few years later, in 2022, Hublot revealed the first watch in partnership with Samuel Ross - the first iteration of this eccentric, ex...

Happy Friday, and welcome back to Bring A Loupe! Rewinding two weeks here to Thanksgiving week here in the States, our last standard edition of this column included some devastating personal news C losing access to my eBay account. The good news is that I'm back in after a few calls and a random address in Brooklyn, NY, receiving two iPhones and an iPad. I dug up a nice little vintage Omega eBay pick to celebrate all things being right in the world. After the Longines "school watch" tourbillon pocket watch passed at Iconeek without a bid, we have just one result to recap. The Heuer Carrera ref. 2447 NST up for auction at Adam Partridge Auctioneers & Valuers i...

In 2023, Grand Seiko honored the 25th anniversary of the original watch that housed their legendary Grand Seiko 9S automatic movement with two limited edition watches in 37mm cases like you would have seen in stores in 1998. Then, earlier this year, they released yet another 37mm Ever-Brilliant Steel case homage C the SBGH347 C this time not a limited edition, with the Hi-Beat 9S85 movement and featuring a new irregular, striated icy-blue dial. If that case size and case material weren't to your liking, the brand has now announced a new option (with the same movement and dial) in a 40mm high-intensity titanium case. As pulled fro...

We're back with another episode of Hodinkee Radio. In addition to the podcast feed, each episode also has video, so swing by Hodinkee's YouTube channel (or watch below). Only want the audio? It's being published to the same old Hodinkee Radio feed, so check your feeds or subscribe wherever you find podcasts (try Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, or TuneIn). For this episode, James is hosting, and he is joined by Mark and Rich to discuss the last year in watches. The conversation is wide-ranging and includes everything from the continued popularity of shaped cases to Daniel Craig leaks, fan service in watches, the need for fun, t...

This week, Urwerk releases a sequel to the UR-230 Eagle, which turned heads with the brand's incorporation of turbines in the Caliber UR-7.30. From afar, this new UR-230 Polaris might appear to be just a new colorway, but there's more here than meets the eye. Visually, the movement and indication for the hours are very Urwerk, with the iconic revolving satellite complication using a three-armed carousel with rotating blocks that eventually reveals the current hour traveling along the minutes track on the dial. It's a slightly more complicated take on the classic wandering hours complication. As the retrograde minute pointer (whic...

Last month, we launched Volume 13 of the Hodinkee Magazine. To celebrate, last week, we threw a little party for friends, mag contributors, and Hodinkee staff in NYC. From new and long-time collaborators to old friends of the brand, the room was packed with great people, interesting conversations, and some pretty cool watches (and party fits, if I do say so myself). We ate chocolate chip cookies, drank holiday-themed cocktails, and C of course C talked watches. We had a photographer on hand to capture the scene, so have a peek at some familiar faces C watches and people alike C that turned out to celebrate Volume 13. You can get your own copy of Volume 13 right h...

Bulova and Complecto (the New York-based community dedicated to inclusivity, authenticity, and representation) have teamed up for a new release of three quartz-driven Super Seville watches with real stone dials that give a bit of throwback to the 1970s when the original release first came out. In 37.5mm by 10.5mm stainless steel cases, left silver or toned for yellow or rose gold, the new Super Seville Stone Dial collection features real turquoise, tiger's eye, or snowflake obsidian dials varying in price from $1,095 to $1,295. The watches are powered by the Bulova NM10 Precisionist movement, giving accuracy within seconds over a...

I've always had a soft spot for Habring2 watches. Each time I've come across one, I've always been so impressed with how much any of their complicated watches can put a smile on my face. The brand has real history, too C Richard Habring is the man most known for democratizing the split seconds complication by utilizing a Valjoux 7750 and a rattrapante module during his time at IWC, among many other contributions. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Austrian brand Habring2 with his wife, Maria, and throughout these 20 years, the brand has grown to be a favorite within the watch-collecting community. The I...

Seiko makes a lot of dive watches C it's largely what they are known for. However, despite a range of models representing multiple philosophies, aesthetic eras, and price points, some hit much harder than others. Among the heavy hitters, we have the recently announced Prospex SPB451 and SPB453 C two mass-appeal takes on the brand's '60-inspired line of tool dive watches. Representing the second generation of a very popular line of watches established by the SPB143, these new Prospex divers offer a slight rethinking in the hopes of delivering a more well-rounded solution for a daily wear dive watch. With the looming threat of the ...

Welcome to Watches in the Wild: Paris. I spent some time during mens fashion week meeting up with friends (old and new), attending shows, visiting museums, and exploring vintage watch shops C all in the name of research (!) and to cement my theory of course: fashion and watches can, and do, intersect.?Paris has played a huge role in my life as a stylist and editor. It's been the backdrop to countless trips for photo shoots, fashion shows, and market appointments. I've lived and studied there, I've made lifelong friends with whom I've eaten countless meals at a countless number of brasseries. I've shopped at Colette (RIP), spotted John Galliano wandering through the Marais with his dogs, con...

Last month, I had the opportunity to hop on a plane (then a train, then a car) to Glashtte, Germany to spend a few days with the Nomos team at the 2024 Nomos Forum. The team presented several novelties, including the controversial Tangente 2date and the Orion and Tangente neomatik dor series, and some more stuff to be released.?What I was most looking forward to, however, was the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the manufacture. Now, before we get to the meat and potatoes of this photo report, just a few takeaways:1) The team is small. Now, that shouldn't necessarily be a surprise, but Nomos has always said that they are the largest manufacturer of mechanical wristwatches in ...

Earlier this year at Watches & Wonders, Herms released a new line of 36mm sports watches powered by mechanical movements, aimed primarily at women. The Herms Cut is smaller, rounder, and softer than the "men's" Herms H08. My initial read: a simple, clean, easy-to-digest (and commercially viable) watch that proves the brand's intention to keep marching full speed ahead with growth of the category. Herms' watches have been a staple amongst fashion enthusiasts and bourgeois consumers since the Jean-Louis Dumas reinvention of Herms in the 1970s. Signature models like the Arceau and Cape Cod have peaked and troughed in wider mass-market popularity, yet they h...

Today, Switzerland's top court rejected an Italian watch dealer/collector's appeal to claim ownership of John Lennon's Patek Philippe reference 2499. As has been covered on these pages before (right here), the watch was originally a 40th birthday gift from Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono. Now, once again, the watch is legally the property of Ono after the Italian dealer has been ordered to return it to her immediately. The verdict is final and marks the end of a years-long legal battle over the watch after it was stolen from Ono years ago. Should it eventually sell, John Lennon's 2499 would likely become the most expensive watch in the w...
