Just last year, Tiffany & Co. partnered with the publisher Steidl to release a coffee table book full of objects in the brand's archive collection. Aptly named "The Tiffany Archives," the book details Tiffany's history as the preeminent American jeweler, with world-famous items such as The Tiffany Diamond in all of its 128-carat glory. Now, the brand has acquired what could amount to The Tiffany Diamond of its watchmaking history. Captain Arthur Rostron's Tiffany & Co. pocket watch does not have the tangible value of something like a 128-carat yellow cushion-shaped diamond. In fact, it appears to be non-functional, sporti...
Introducing: The Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon
Would you look at that C it's 2025! Though it's much too early in the year to start calling what trends we might see come and go, it looks like Longines is declaring that the forged carbon trend is here to stay. One of the silent hits from the Swatch Group in 2024 was the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 Carbon, and the watch seems to have surpassed all expectations as we see it constantly fluctuating in and out of stock across retailers. The rest of the Swatch Group must be taking notes as Longines debuts its first watch case in carbon with the new Ultra-Chron Carbon. Though the Ultra-Chron has a history dating back to 1968, the juxtaposition of the cushion case with ca...

Found: A Vacheron Given To The Crew Of Apollo 14, And The Answer To A Five-Year-Old HODINKEE Mystery
Remember 2011? I sure do. I was a full-time graduate student and a full-time HODINKEE'er. I remember going to visit the Vacheron Constantin manufacture for the first time and being shown this picture C a black and white image of a watch with the Apollo 14 logo on it. At the time, even Vacheron itself didn't know what the watch was or why it was made C but they knew it should exist somewhere. I immediately wrote the post here and sent an email to Eric Wind saying, "We need to find this watch!" Five years later, here it is.? The watch is very much real, and it is now, thanks to the folks at Christie's New York (including Eric in hi...

Business News: IWC To Sell Curated Selection Of Watches On Mr. Porter
In an industry where glamorous boutiques filled with champagne and caviar are king and e-commerce requires a telephone call, IWC is taking major step forward. It has announced that it will be selling a sampling of its collection on the the luxury online fashion retailer Mr. Porter. This partnership should come as no surprise (okay, fine, we are a little surprised) as Richemont is the parent company of Yoox Net-a-Porter Group (under which Mr. Porter falls under) and IWC. ? The IWC Portofino Automatic in stainless steel. So what does this say about the current state of the watch market? It is no secret that Richemont, and the re...
Roger Dubuis has released three new watches in anticipation of the SIHH 2017. The most impressive new Excalibur is the Quatuor Cobalt MicroMelt, which is a limited edition of just eight pieces. The Quatuor is not a new watch per se (having been first released in 2013) and it has been created in several materials, including one model with a silicon case which debuted at a price of $1.1 million. This year's watch will feature the same caliber RD101 (made of 590 parts!) with four balances, each set at a 45 degree angle, in the four corners of the movement, but with a new case showing off some new (to the watch industry) manufacturing technology. The case of th...
This week, Bring A Loupe starts with a discontinued Seiko diver, the "Samurai" SBDA005. It might not be vintage already, but its stunning orange dial and brushed titanium case make it a coveted piece, especially in such mint condition. You'll also hear about an unusual Rolex Explorer with a gold-filled case C the Canadian-model 5506. Our favorite chronographs definitely made the cut as well; they are represented by the Zenith A271, the Universal Genve Compax "Nina Rindt," and the Breitling Sprint "Bow Tie" C this Friday, you'll hear some of the cool nicknames of some equally cool watches. Zenith Chronograph Reference A271, With Grey Dial ...
This is a very special watch. Its special because it's a platinum minute repeater by Audemars Piguet, sure. But its even more special because its the only post-war platinum minute repeater Audemars Piguet made with a bracelet, period. It was discovered not long ago by the folks at Christies, whove done a brilliant job documenting its complex and interesting history. Let's dig into it. You see, the watch as it is now is a little different than it was when it left the manufacture in 1960. When the original owner received it, the watch had both a diamond set bezel and a different bracelet. He admired them at first, but following a change of heart he decid...
HODINKEE And Phillips Present 'Patek Philippe: The Holy Grail' Panel Discussion (Live Stream)
Today our senior European editor Arthur Touchot is sitting down with Phillips' Aurel Bacs and art dealer Thomas Seydoux in Geneva for a panel discussion about collecting "holy grails" in the fields of fine watches, cars, art, and more. Central to this, of course, is the stainless steel Patek Philippe 1518, coming to auction this weekend in Geneva alongside the same model in yellow and pink gold. The panel will commence at 7:00 PM CET (1:00 PM EST) and you can view a live stream of the talk right here. ADVERTISEMENT...

The Speedmaster might be the watch that took man to the Moon, but it's not the only wristwatch with a connection to the Final Frontier. Watches are part of real space exploration, of course, but they're also part of imaginary space travel as well. For the ODC X-03, Hamilton has teamed up with Nathan Crowley, a three-time Oscar nominee and the production designer for the sci-fi flick Interstellar, to create a watch centered around traveling a little further out into the solar system. Before we get into the watch itself, it's worth noting that Hamilton has a pretty long history with Hollywood and with sci-fi movies in particular. Hamiltons have been worn in d...

Photo Report: HODINKEE Celebrates London Jewelers' New Store In New York City's Oculus
Last Wednesday, we celebrated the opening of London Jewelers'?newest location in the heart of Santiago Calatrava's Oculus at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. The family-owned jeweler has been around since 1926 and has five locations around Long Island, but this is the first foray into Manhattan. We were fortunate enough to count Audemars Piguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC, MB&F, and Panerai as co-hosts (all brands available at the store, by the way), and more than 100 guests and friends joined us for drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and wristshots. Enjoy a recap of the evening here. ...
This was a big 48 hours for Phillips, and not just because of one lot. In total, the auction brought in 27,513,625 CHF (approximately $27,625,350 at the time of publishing). There was of course a HUGE result on day one of the sale C which alone represented more than 50% of the money received by the auctioneer that night and more than the total achieved by the 96 lots on the the second evening. Well get to that in a bit, but first, lets look at some of the other big results of the weekend. We expected the top lots would do well (they always do, even when the markets seem more fragile than ever). The top results included many...
The Supermoon: What It Is, Why It Is (And Maybe A New Complication, Why Not?)
Tonight we'll be treated to the astronomical phenomenon known as a "supermoon" C this is the term for the occasion in the moon's orbit around the Earth, when a full moon, and the moon's closest position to the Earth (its perigee, in technical terms) coincide. The supermoon phenomenon is a real thing C like any orbit, the moon's orbit around the Earth is an ellipse, and has a nearest point to the Earth (perigee) and furthest point from the Earth (apogee). When perigee and a full moon happen at the same time, the moon can seem both bigger and brighter. Technically the phenomenon is known as a "perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system" C a syzygy, in addi...

Recently the Tonda 1950 has been offered with a meteorite dial, in either "abyss blue" or "black nickel" C and now in white, for the first time.
