There is something decidedly different about A. Lange & Sohne. You can feel it the first time you step inside any one of Lange's boutiques, or see the backside of a Datograph for the first time. There is quiet excellence everywhere. Each Lange watch is made entirely in-house, and has been for some time. In this original HODINKEE video, we take you inside the Lange manufacture in Glashtte for a look at what make this German brand so special. It should be noted that we were among the very last groups to be allowed to photograph and film inside the Lange manufacture C moving forward photography will be prohibited C which makes this look even more special. ...

In this weeks Whats Selling Where we are bringing you a famed LeCoultre Deep Sea Alarm currently on eBay, an insane vintage Bvlgari Serpenti with Jaeger-LeCoultre watch inside, another famed American astronauts gold Speedmaster, and tons more, including a Universal Geneve Nina Rindt as well as some watches to avoid and notable sales. LeCoultre Deep Sea Alarm The LeCoultre Deep Sea Alarm is unquestionably a hot watch C and it got even hotter after I wrote about Zach Norris finding one at a Phoenix Goodwill and then selling it to Eric Ku. I got pretty excited this week when one popped up on eBay. T...

The watch worn by the President of the United States is often referred to as the most visible watch in the world. On his campaign trail, President Obama created a true flurry of sales for private label maker Jorg Grey with his Secret Service watch, but just last week, keen eyes spotted him wearing something else C only thing is it's not really a watch. Mr. Obama's choice of wristwear is a Fitbit, or something of a smartwatch/activity tracker. It has made (some) national headlines, and our friends over at OnTheDash have gone completely HAM on the matter. Check it out here....

Since 2009, the design studio Kacper Hamilton (named for its young founder) has worked on a range of products and installations, including visual merchandising concepts for Louis Vuitton and the luxury crystal manufacturer Baccarat. More recently, the studio has begun to produce a selection of limited edition products conceived and designed in-house. Their whimsical and sometimes surrealist designs draw upon popular culture and, more frequently, drinking culture. (Case in point: the studio produced a sleek set of unstable port glasses inspired by the classical British story of the Bishop of Norwich.) Compared to the studio's ...

Seiko is associated primarily with a wide range of moderately priced and reliable watches, but surprisingly, the watchmaking division operates within the diversified conglomerate Seiko Group, whose many specialties include upscale department stores, printers, semiconductors, machine tools, and of course, watches. Seiko has deep roots in timekeeping C founder Kintaro Hattori started to produce clocks in 1892 under the name Seikosha, and in 1969, almost swept the Swiss watchmaking industry off its feet with the introduction of Astron, the first commercial quartz watch. The brand has an enthusiastic collector base and an unparalleled breadth in the lineup that stretches from mainstream quartz t...

Glashtte Original, like Zenith, may not win the praise of the most demanding collectors, but there is a quiet charm about them. Residing literally just next door to the other Glashtte-based high-end manufacture, GO goes about producing subtle and elegant wristwatches without much fuss or fanfare, but they are all excellently made, and all produced entirely in-house. Oh, and relative to their neighbors, they offer fantastic value. This new piece from GO is one of their strongest, most handsome offerings yet.? The clear winner of this year's introduction by Glashtte Original at Baselworld 2015 was the watch you see here C th...

Tudor released quite a few attractive offerings this year at Baselworld. Its new North Flag model made headlines for using Tudors first in-house movement (caliber MT5621). Then we found out that this same movement drives Tudors new Pelagos diver. In addition to those spectacular offerings, Tudor also presented another update to its line of modern tool watches: the Tudor Fastrider Chronograph. The Fastrider was the brainchild of a collaboration between Tudor and Ducati that started in 2011. It was an effort to produce a fast-paced, utility-oriented chronograph that was functional, sporty, and a bit saucy (like a Ducati). Th...

At last years Concours DElegance in Pebble Beach, Jaguar announced plans to build six lightweight E-type coupes, exactly as they would have been produced in 1963. The original "Special GT E-type" project called for 18 cars to be built, though just 12 were actually finished. Now, more than 50 years later, the remaining cars will be hand-made and delivered bearing the six dormant serial numbers. To honor the event, Jaguar teamed up with Bremont to offer a watch to the buyers of these cars, each signed with the individual serial and engine numbers on the dial. And this year at Basel, Bremont announced plans to introduce two watches into regular production, dubbed the MKI and MKII, each based ...

In celebrating their third year of partnering with the Tribeca Film Festival, IWC is building a unique piece for auction, with the proceeds going directly to the Tribeca Film Institute. The watch represents the first of its kind from IWC, a monopusher mechanical chronograph. The complication comes courtesy of the IWC manufactured caliber 59360. The unique Portofino Monopusher will be auctioned online by Christies between the 1st and 10th of April. The Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from April 15th through the 26th, welcomes IWC as the official Festival-Time partner for the third year, and lends inspiration to the third ...

At first, Romain Gauthier struck me to be a very serious man during our appointment. I had to be black-gloved and excessively careful. He tracked my hands every motion, and instilled in me his sense of gravity over the haute horlogerie that I was handling. It wasnt until later in the interview, when we coincidentally sidetracked to the topic of cars, that smiles cracked and laughter alleviated the tension. And thats when it dawned on me that Romain Gauthier was one guy, with whom only a handful of others created very superior and very exclusive watches in very limited quantity. The model that I was handling embodied months of someone toiling away to create something novel and pristine C a...

One wouldn't know it, but Tiffany & Co., the blue-chip New York jeweler with the famed blue box, has a very serious history in fine watchmaking. Today, Tiffany launches into an entirely new era of traditional Swiss watchmaking, with a true American twist. This is the brand new Tiffany & Co. CT60 collection C and there is a lot to like. Introducing The CT60 Collection Tiffany & Co. believes in doing things the right way, and this means making a major investment in timepieces. As such, the new CT60 collection C named after founder Charles Lewis Tiffany C is being made by the absolute best cr...

Finnish independent watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva gave us a look at his new watches this year in Basel, and introduced a new member of the Korona family, the Northern Lights. The watch gets its name from the naturally occurring lights at high altitude regions in the northern hemisphere (sorry, Aurora Australis fans), and the theme is represented by the luminous sandwich dial available in blue, green, and violet. This isnt just any application of lume, however. The proprietary mixture lights up the entire dial when the lights go out. Theres a familiar moonphase in the mix as well. The Northern Lights are comprised of three wat...

Not many watches can remind you of natures elegance and complexity. In terms of horological flair, the Ant Watch by the Analog Watch Company may claim the win this year. Haute horology composed of flying tourbillons, exposed balance wheels and constant force escapements needs human intervention to keep ticking away. Not so with the Ant Watch, which is the worlds first timepiece that doesnt require constant intervention by its wearer thanks to insects ticking away at its center. The case of the Ant Watch is made of wood and a biodegradable strap, both of which are rightfully painted green. At 43 mm, it is a modernly sized watch, but this isnt stainless steel, so its considerably light and...

You know, over the past few months, we've been asked relentlessly about what the Apple Watch and other "smart" watches will mean to us here in the world of mechanical timepieces. To be perfectly frank, we just don't know, and anybody else who claims to be able to see the future is either lying, or Jean-Claude Biver. We love mechanical watches, sure, but there is no denying the power of innovation and as such, the HODINKEE editorial team, has decided that as of tomorrow, HODINKEE.com and all sub-domains will no longer be viewable at their traditional world-wide-web addresses. Instead, HODINKEE, one of the world's widest read and most influential mechanical watch magazines, will be available e...

Getting a simple three-hander right is an elusive accomplishment. Whether its a dive watch or formal wear, the little details can make or break everything, and it is in the latter that Jaeger-LeCoultre has excelled with the new Master Ultra Thin Date. Sleek and balanced proportions are made possible thanks to the svelte JLC-manufactured caliber 899, which even packs an automatic winding system and date complication for good measure. At just 7.45 mm thick, the Ultra Thin Date has made little in the way of compromises.Ultra thin watches are nothing new at Jaeger-LeCoultre. Theyve managed to fit a diverse range of complications within their Master Ultra Thin family, including perpetual calend...

Bremont's MB series C short for Martin-Baker C were some of the British brand's earliest watches, and they are still some of their most popular. The no-nonsense adventure watches offer a lot of bad-assery for the buck, but the most bad-ass of them all is the MB1. Why? Because in order to buy it, you have to have survived a live ejection from an active military plane at some point in your life. Turns out Jimmy Fallon's father-in-law has, and last night, Jimmy gave him a Bremont MB1 live on the Tonight Show. You can watch the clip above, and read more about the Bremont MB1 right here....

When Phillips announced that Mr. Aurel Bacs would be helming its newly founded watch department, we expected great things. Add to that some assistance from our old friend Paul Boutros, and we could have something really special. Today, with this video of Mr. Bacs explaining just how these watch sales will differ from others, we received an early look at what we might expect. Have a look above and we'll be back soon to go deep into the watches from the two first sales. You can read more about Phillips Watches here....

Line Werdelin presented two new additions to their Spidolite family this year at Baselworld, the Spidolite Titanium and Spidolite Gold. The new watches continue the Spidolite theme of reduction in the name of weight loss, presenting an openworked dial layout first seen on the Spidospeed. Both of the watches got their first crack at the market at the Parisian boutique, Chronopassion, and in Linde Werdelin form, each are limited to just 75 pieces. The SpidoLite collection began more than 5 years ago in an attempt to rid the case and dial of any unnecessary,...

There were plenty of new releases at Basel World 2015 (you can see them here), but none of them, and I mean none of them, were the subject of such hot debate as the Patek Philippe 5524 Pilots Watch. Let's think about this for a minute C Patek Philippe made a pilots watch. If that statement alone isn't enough to confuse you, just look at the thing. It's big, bold, with giant pushers at 10 and 8 o'clock, and a dial that looks a heck of a lot like a watch that costs a heck of a lot less. In my seven years at Baselworld I had never encountered a watch that spurred so much discussion, so I thought we'd take the debate online. This is what you have here C two personal opinions from two of the men ...

Artistic work when it comes to mechanical watches isnt for everyone. But it is certainly a noteworthy craft if you consider the amount of effort and skill that is required to make artistic timepieces finer, more rare and unique. Such is the case with dial work, and Girard-Perregaux offered three solid choices in artistic craft with its Chamber of Wonders Collection this year. This should come as no surprise from Perregaux, whose enamel works we introduced last year. The collection is composed of three pieces, each in similar 40 mm fine polished pink-gold cases. The lugs have a steep curve to them and hug the wrist very well. The dials are finely crafted works of pigmented fine stone. ...
