When is a watch just a watch? Not a pilots watch, a dive watch, a field watch, or any other sort of Walter Mitty make-believe accessory, but just a handsome timekeeper you strap on every day. Ill admit to being as much of a sucker for a great marketing tale as anyone, taken in by the romance of a watch inspired by the one worn to defend Western Europe or re-plant the Great Barrier Reef. As watch enthusiasts, we must have some need for evocative storytelling to accompany our timepieces. Is this because, if devoid of these back stories, our watches are more plainly exposed as the obsolete expensive baubles they are? Maybe thats the subject of another article, but for now, this philosophical...

Matching watch supply and demand is a top priority at the Richemont Group these days. "There are too many watches in the world," Richemont Chairman Johann Rupert declared last year. He mandated that, going forward, sell-in to retailers be less than sell-out for Richemont group brands. At the SIHH exhibition in Geneva in January, HODINKEE's Joe Thompson asked IWC Schaffhausen CEO Chris Grainger how IWC monitors the market. Here is his response: The way that we are managing our production is a lot more flexible than it used to be. Were looking a lot more at the data sets that we have. We have data points much, much earlier in the year, because you can see when you...

A few months ago we announced that the FHH-hosted Watches & Wonders would take place in the Miami Design District, February 16-19. Well, the time is now and things are kicking into high gear. We will be there along with the 21 brands, participating in the inaugural edition of the show. As we mentioned back in November, there will be a number of events, talks, classes, and of course, watches. So what is on the docket this President's Day Weekend down in the Magic City? Let's find out. This year's Watches and Wonders features the following participating brands: A. Lange & Sohne, Armin Strom, Audemars Piguet, Bulgari, Cartie...

The latest version of Grand Seiko's quartz 9F wristwatch offers extremely high accuracy in two case and bracelet designs C one based on the first 9F quartz Grand Seiko watch from 1993, and the other in a case derived from the 1967 Grand Seiko 44GS. The original Grand Seiko 9F from 1993. Why This Watch Matters One of two new limited commemorative editions for the 25th anniversary of 9F, the SBGT241. The original Grand Seiko quartz watch was launched in 1988, and the caliber 9F, introduced in 1993, represents the state-of-the-art in high-precision quartz timekeeping. ...

When you think of Jaquet Droz, your mind most likely goes toward the ultra-traditional. I'm talking automatons, detailed enamel painting, and old-school gold filigree work. But that's not everything the brand is about. The Grande Seconde Moon Onyx is proof of this, taking one of the brand's familiar silhouettes, but rendering it in a very modern way with the use of a stainless steel case and a clean onyx dial. The dial has multiple levels and the chapter rings cast subtle shadows on the onyx ground. The Grande Seconde family is one of the key pillars of Jaquet Droz's contemporary collection. There are loads of different versio...

Rado's just announced a pre-Baselworld launch that incorporates its use of "high-tech" ceramics with a surprisingly delicate, nature inspired decorative motif. The True Thinline Leaf is also a very flat watch, with an integrated ceramic bracelet; the material offers all the usual advantages of ceramics (resistance to scratching, lightness, and great wearing comfort) combined with a very interesting play of colors and textures. Why This Watch Matters Rado is arguably the leading innovator in ceramic watch case materials in the entire industry. In general, its designs are a straight shot of celebration of high tech materials, but in this in...

The last few years have been particularly interesting ones in the watch world. As watchmakers new and old work to find ways to appeal to a new generation of customers with different wants, needs, and behaviors than the previous generation, they have tried a number of strategies. There are those who think straight vintage re-issues are the way to snag that fledgling collector who might be comparison shopping against a vintage Sub; there are those who think going high-tech will convince someone that mechanical watches can still go toe-to-toe with smartwatches as a solution for the future; and there are those who decide taking the best of both of those approaches to create products that feel bo...

Just a few days before SIHH 2018 officially opened its doors in Geneva, Belgian watch brand Ressence dropped the Type 2 e-Crown Concept, a totally new kind of mechanical watch. While this concept watch still utilizes a fully mechanical movement to tell the time, it also contains the new "e-Crown" module, which is an electronic mechanism used to set the watch and to make sure the watch is always telling the correct time. As we mentioned when first introducing the Type 2 e-Crown Concept, it's a complex system that bears some real explanation. So, we sat down with Ressence founder Beno?t Mintiens and technologist Tony Fadell (founder of Nest and inventor of the iPod) to get the full story of th...

The 2018 Winter Olympic Games kicked off yesterday in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and those of us in the United States are getting ready to watch the opening ceremonies later this evening. For some people, it will be all about the speed skating, for others the downhill skiing, and for others still the ice hockey tournament. But regardless of which events are your favorites, they almost all involve some element of timing C and it turns out solving each event's unique challenges is much harder than it looks.? A story by Alan Burdick, New Yorker staff writer and author of the book Why Time Flies: A Mostly Scientific Investigation, looks into the history of timekeeping...

When the first Ming watches were launched internationally, they generated a significant amount of buzz. The Ming 17.01 was (and is) the brainchild of internationally known photographer, and recently named Hasselblad Chief of Strategy, Ming Thein, who became an active member of internet watch communities while a university student and who has maintained a strong interest in watches, watch collecting, and especially watch design, ever since. This latest introduction takes the successful Ming 17.01 basic design, and adds an indication for a second time zone C as well as a lot of other incremental but significant upgrades to the original design. The Ming 17...

If you're looking to gently make your way into the big boy leagues, and picking up that hot new release from the catalog down at your local AD isn't going to cut it, it's time to head over to Vacheron Constantin and the hallowed halls of Les Cabinotiers.?This specialist department at Vacheron is a place into which few have had the privilege of stepping foot. You quite literally sit down with a blank sheet of paper and create every detail of that watch you've always wanted (that watch you've spent way too much time talking to your partner about over the years C you know the one that makes him or her nod and smile, as they try to continue faking interest). ??Historically, the Cabinotiers watch...

The world's thinnest wristwatch minute repeater movement is Bulgari's caliber BVL 362 Finissimo, which heretofore has only been used by Bulgari in the company's ultra-thin Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater. Such a flat movement lends itself to many interpretations, however; the Diva Finissima Minute Repeater is the first time the firm's used the movement in a traditionally styled ladies' timepiece. Why This Watch Matters Watches created specifically with the intention of embodying a traditional notion of femininity are not generally graced with record setting examples of high complications. The Diva Finissim...

This particular wristwatch was announced in October of last year, and we've been looking forward to getting our hands on one ever since. The Hi-Beat GMT models from Grand Seiko have proven to be quite popular and as we mentioned, a Hi-Beat GMT won the Petit Aiguille prize at the 2014 Grand Prix Horlogerie de Genve (and just imagine how good a Japanese watch has to be to win an award in Switzerland). Grand Seiko made its first 36,000 vph watch in 1968: the 61GS, which was one of a range of high beat watches made by Seiko under the Grand Seiko (there were also Lord Marvel, Lord Matic, and King Seiko high-beat models at both 28,800 vph and 36,000 vph).? T...

Just a few weeks after dropping the hammer on Paul Newman's own Paul Newman Daytona, making it the most expensive wristwatch ever sold at auction, Phillips announced it would be holding a thematic Daytona sale in spring 2018 called "Daytona Ultimatum." At the time, I gave them a bit of flak about the name and the impulse to continue fanning the flames of rare, high-end Daytona collecting, but there's no question is the most hotly anticipated sale of the upcoming season. Today, Phillips has released the first three lots from the sale and announced that Pucci Papaleo, the author of Ultimate Rolex Daytona, is one of the sale's curators. Let's get the smaller news ou...

Glashtte Original has been a longtime sponsor of the Berlin Film Festival, which started this week. To mark the occasion, the German watchmaker has released a new version of its Senator Chronograph, available in steel, rose gold, and platinum variations. Technically, the watch is identical to the original launched in 2013, while the aesthetics are much closer to the striking stainless steel version we got at last year's Baselworld. The steel and rose gold versions feature a dark "Bourbon grey" sunburst dial with dark blue accents around the sub-dials, while the platinum edition has a "Dry silver" dial and lighter blue accents. All three are limited editions. Why...

One of the most interesting things about covering one subject for years and years and years (aside from wondering increasingly if writing about wristwatches all day really counts as a suitable job for a responsible adult) is that you start to notice how many gaps there still are in your own knowledge and how little you've actually fact-checked things you've repeated as conventional wisdom for all those years. Not long ago, I got to talking with someone who in the line of duty hears, much more often than I do, from customers who sometimes feel their expectations for accuracy from their watches are not being met; this person asked me what I thought a reasonable expectation was. ...

As you probably already know, Miami Watches & Wonders kicks off this Friday, February 16, and runs through Monday, February 19. Sponsored by the Miami Design District and the FHH, Miami Watches & Wonders is America's answer to SIHH. There will be tons of the latest SIHH novelties to see, lots of lectures to attend, great workshops to participate in, and more.? But that's not all! We are hosting a meet-up in the Design District on Saturday night from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A few members of the HODINKEE team will be there, including our founder Benjamin Clymer, our editor-in-chief Jack Forster, and editor Cara Barrett. It's going to be a great time and we would...

Hindsight: it's supposed to be 20/20. But it's not always, and when that's the case, sometimes it's because you're using rose-tinted corrective lenses. We like to think that in years gone by watchmaking was an uninterrupted vista of horological beauty, but the reality is, shall we say, more nuanced. (Isn't reality always?)? In support of this thesis, behold the Precimax chronograph, which was produced around 1974, and which I ran across in Lang and Meis' Chronograph Wristwatches: To Stop Time. I have been able to find out very little about the Precimax company, but it appears to have been one of the myriad Swiss watch tablisseurs that flourished like so many bri...

TAG Heuer's flagship Carrera line, which remains the company's best-selling collection now comes with the Heuer 02 chronograph movement. Many readers will remember this automatic column-wheel chronograph with vertical clutch from the Heritage Autavia Caliber Heuer 02, the watch that resulted from the Autavia Cup competition. In the lead up to Baselworld, TAG Heuer is announcing a total of 12 C count 'em C new Carreras, most featuring 43mm cases. There is also a 45mm execution with GMT. Why This Watch Matters This is the first time we've seen the Heuer 02 C a pretty nice automatic column-wheel chronograph movement C powering a Carrera, the...

You'd be forgiven for not recognizing the Fears name. Founded in 1846 by Edwin Fear, a 22 year old watchmaker in Bristol, England, Fears was one of Britain's oldest family-run watch companies in its day. At its height, the company was shipping watches to 95 countries. But, like many family businesses, there comes a time when one generation doesn't have the desire to take it on. And so the business closed its doors in 1966. ??It wasnt until 2016, when Edwin Fear's great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill (previously an apprentice watchmaker at Rolex in London, where he spent five years), decided over a leisurely Sunday lunch that he was going to restart the old family business. T...
