To celebrate its 100th anniversary this year, Mido is releasing a number of watches that pay tribute to models from its archive. The watch we have here is the Commander Shade, inspired by a 1979 version of the Commander (a watch that Mido has had in constant production since it debuted in 1959). The Commander Shade has a 37mm stainless steel case with almost no bezel to speak of, which gives the grey and black dial plenty of room to breathe. It's a three-hander with day and date windows at three o'clock, and the addition of the steel mesh bracelet completes the super '70s look. There is a limited edition, rose gold PVD version of this watch being released as well, though Mido has not provided...

Jaquet Droz is one of those brands that has a collection of watches that is genuinely unique in the market. The Grande Seconde, with its off-center dials and oversized sub-seconds register, doesn't look like anything else out there. It's clean, it's instantly recognizable, and it mixes traditional finishes and styles with a slightly modern sensibility. This new iteration, the Grande Seconde Skelet-One, keeps the core tenets of the design while taking the watch in a totally new direction by making the sub-dials out of thing sheets of sapphire and dramatically skeletonizing the movement. There are three versions of the Skelet-One: ceramic with red gold accents, red...

This year is the 70th anniversary of the Seamaster, and Omega is celebrating with a pair of limited edition watches that call back to the model's early years. Both feature 38mm stainless steel cases, refined, domed silvered dials, and classic applied markers. Notably, neither shows the date, which is something I (and I'm sure a lot of you out there) love. One has leaf hands a small seconds register, while the other has dauphine hands and center seconds. Otherwise, the two are very similar. While the watches look very old-school, inside are high-tech, thoroughly-modern Omega movements that are automatic, METAS-certified calibers with co-axial escapements. Could Omega have gone manual with thes...

This is the Seamaster 300M you know and love, but with a number of important updates. In true Omega form, the above image only shows roughly a third of the 14 new Seamasters (!) that are launching at Baselworld this week. There are six models in steel and eight more in some version of two-tone, and the case is now 42mm wide, with a wave dial in the front and a modern Master Chronometer Caliber 8800 ticking within. The wave dial is back! Initial Thoughts Aesthetically, this is not a reinvention of the Seamaster by any means. And some 25 years in, you either like the skeleton hand Seamaster design or you...

With a stunning skeletonized dial and crisp yellow accents, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 special edition is a unique take on Omega's Dark Side archetype. An ideal choice for a Speedmaster to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission, this very black expression of the Dark Side of the Moon pays tribute to the first Apollo mission to complete an orbit of the moon itself. With a cut-away dial carrying the imprint of the lunar surface and a special version of Omega's hand-wound 1861 movement with black bridges, the Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 is a bold and rather literal expression of a Moonwatch.?Interestingly, this is not a limited edition but rather an addi...

The Horological Society of New York's award-winning classes are on the road again! Classes will be held in St. Louis, Missouri, over the weekend of April 28-29, hosted by Monta Watch. At HSNY's Horological Education classes, students discover what actually makes a watch tick. The hands-on classes are taught by HSNY's staff of professional watchmakers. Students work on a mechanical watch movement, studying the gear train, winding and setting mechanisms, and escapement. The weekend half-day classes cover everything taught during the individual evening classes held in New York. Enrollment is now open for the St. Louis (and Chicago) class...

With the start of Baselworld just a few days away, IWC doesn't want to fully surrender the spotlight. Today the Richemont-owned brand announced that it is launching an online customization tool that allows customers to create their own versions of the Ingeneiur chronograph and then order those watches directly. This comes less than a year after IWC launched its latest U.S. website, complete with an e-commerce boutique. And, while for now the tool is limited to the single model C the Ingenieur Chronograph C?I would be shocked if this weren't an idea that IWC pushed further in the future. Today is almost certainly just the beginning. You select from your ...

This is one of those watches that really started with a movement and was built out from there. The new CFB T3000 caliber is the latest in-house movement from Carl F. Bucherer and it's a relatively large movement that has both a peripheral rotor for automatic winding and a tourbillon that is mounted with a peripheral cage, making it look like it's floating without any bridges (essentially one-upping the single-bridged flying tourbillon). As if that wasn't enough, the movement also has a stop-seconds mechanism for the tourbillon so you can set it precisely to the second. To house this movement, CFB has created the aptly-named Manero Tourbillon DoublePeripheral. It takes the familiar styling of ...

Following last year's release of the 62MAS re-issue SLA017, Seiko has announced a new re-issue diver based on a model they produced in the late 1960s. Called, in full, the 1968 Automatic Divers Re-creation Limited Edition: SLA025, I think we can just call it the SLA025 for short. The main story here is Seiko's use of a monoblock steel case and their 8L55 hi-beat movement to reinterpret the orginal. A crown at four, gilt bezel and dial markings, and a domed sapphire all come together on the SLA025's chunky monoblock case. Initial Thoughts This watch in a word? Chunky. With a steel one-piece case (no re...

The Breguet Marine has an updated look for 2018. Its still the water-resistant sport luxury watch that gives Breguet a chance to break out from the conservative rigidity of its more sober guilloch-dialed, pocket-watch-influenced beauties. But now the Marine is now also being offered in a titanium version that collectors will probably be more comfortable treating like a sports watch. This is the second year in a row that Breguet has a made the Marine a focus. You may remember that last years collection was headlined by a highly complicated model with an unusual equation-of-time display. This year, in keeping with a trend seen at both Baselworld and SIHH, the emphasis is on strong commercia...

Are you tired of vintage-inspired dive watches yet? Me neither. In fact, I cant get enough of them, and Baselworld is the best place to sate the hunger. This year was no exception, with retro-tastic divers from Rado, Longines, Bulova, Doxa and, of course, Tudor. But every year, theres one piece that surprises me and catches my fancy. Last year it was the Rado Captain Cook, and this year, I became smitten with the Certina DS PH200M. Vintage-inspired done right. You likely havent read anything about Certina on HODINKEE, except in the old Bring A Loupe series. Thats because Certina, a Swatch Group brand, doesnt sell watche...

With this version of the Omega Seamaster 300M, Omega brings the advantages of a METAS (Swiss Institute Of Metrology) certified movement to the Seamaster 300M family. As James Stacey reported earlier this week, there have been a number of design and movement upgrades and updates and the result is a watch with a very strong visual identity, as well as a movement that arguably represents some of the most interesting horological engineering being done anywhere in Switzerland (or the world, for that matter). The new Seamaster 300M now includes a new version of the ceramic bezel as well as a ceramic dial, which is laser-engraved with t...

I first heard of Krayon, and the Everywhere watch, just about a year ago, and at the time I didn't know what to make of it. The Everywhere watch does something quite remarkable: if you input your latitude and longitude, and the correct date, the watch will show the correct times of sunrise and sunset, as well as the duration of daylight and nighttime hours, anywhere in the world. Given the complexity of the mechanism, the Everywhere watch is almost absurdly easy to operate. There's a pusher on the left-hand side of the case that lets you select either date, latitude, longitude, or UTC as the input (there is a function indicator o...

Team HODINKEE is back home after an incredible week in Basel checking out all the latest releases from a diverse selection of brands, big and small. Among the hundreds of new watches we saw this week, a few stood out as the kind of everyday pieces that we see people coming back to day in and day out. Here's a round-up of our editors' selections for the best go-to timekeepers of Baselworld 2018. Cara Barrett C Rolex GMT-Master II In Stainless Steel Yes, I have a thing for Rolex. Why? Because they continue to make watches that both impress me (hello Rainbow Daytona) while maintaining their cult-everyday-wat...

In the early 20th century, it became mandatory for all pocket watches used for timekeeping on American and Canadian railroads to make use of lever-set movements. In order to change the time on these watches, you had to spin off the bezel and crystal, pull out a small lever from the edge of the dial, and then turn the crown to move the hands. The reason for this new requirement was simple: It made it impossible to accidentally adjust the time, an important consideration for timetables and track-switching safety. All the great American watch companies C including Waltham, Illinois, Elgin, Hamilton among them C responded with railroad pocket watches that had this feature. But lever-setting di...

Sinn, best known for its over-engineered tool watches, is the epitome of no-nonsense German design. Since the Frankfurt brands watches are most commonly rendered in black and white, a sunburst blue-dialed Sinn with creamy lume, like this new limited edition 103 Sa B E pilots chrono, attracts notice. Its a handsome, whimsical (for Sinn) take on a familiar and proven watch. The entire bezel is anodized blue aluminum, even the sides. Initial Thoughts The 103 is one of Sinns more nostalgic offerings, with a lineage that traces back to company founder, Helmut Sinns, work building watches for the German...

Walking the halls of the Baselworld, the sheer number of watches can be dizzying. However, some manage to rise above the chaos and stand you against the rest. Yesterday we brought you our picks for the best everyday watches of Baselworld 2018, and today we're back with a very different selection of new timepieces C?these are the watches that stopped us in our tracks and inspired double-takes. Here are six true grail watches that we'll be talking about for years to come. Cara Barrett C Rolex Rainbow Daytona Well, if you follow me on Instagram, it is already no secret what my favorite watch of the show was:...

With all the chaos of Baselworld and the year's newest releases, it's easy to forget that auction season is close on the horizon. Each spring, all the major auction houses will host sales C and with the way things have been going in recent years, we can almost certainly count on new records being set, never-before-seen watches being brought to market, and new trends developing. Kicking things off on Monday, April 2, is Sotheby's, which will be hosting its 423-lot watch auction in Hong Kong. The hefty catalog contains a lot of great pieces at all price points, but there are four watches from Patek Philippe that truly stood out. Each could be a cover lot and each has a story to tell. Let's tak...

Despite being around watches basically 24/7, we here at HODINKEE have to go into Baselworld every year with an open mind. Sure, we know about a few new releases in advance and we obviously talk to people across the industry and collector community to get a sense of what might be coming, but there are always surprises. Whether it's a crazy new reference, strange corporate news, or something wild that happens on the ground while we're in Switzerland, there's never a shortage of the unexpected. Here are the things that surprised us most at Baselworld 2018. Cara Barrett C Great Women's Options The biggest...

One of the small pleasures of Baselworld is to make a detour from Hall 1, where all the big, well-known brands reside, and to venture into the relative chaos of Hall 2. The labyrinthine hallways and smaller, open booths feel more colorful, crowded, and noisy, more Moroccan souk than Hall 1s IKEA vibe. I managed to visit a handful of brands in Hall 2 this year of which watch enthusiasts may have a vague knowledge, but seldom get to see in person or read about. One of those brands is Anonimo. This brand with Italian roots introduced a new, more refined dress watch this year, but it is best known for its military-inspired watches C particularly bronze cushion-shaped divers. I wanted to see how...
