In keeping with a theme we've seen quite a bit of at Vacheron this SIHH, we have a new watch to announce that will be available in two executions. The watch in question is the Tourbillon Traditionelle, and it also happens to be the first-ever automatic tourbillon from Vacheron Constantin. This is not entirely surprising when y0u consider that the company already had a great 14-day hand-wound tourbillon. In the case of all of the new Traditionelle models launching this SIHH, the platinum executions are designated as part of the Excellence Platine collection and will be limited editions. Why This Watch Matters Any time a company on Vacheron...

Way back when in 2016, Vacheron Constantin released the Overseas Ultra-Thin Perpetual Calendar. As the first Overseas QP (not to be confused with the Perpetual Calendar Chronograph), the watch was a pretty big hit and now they have added a pink gold version. The watch features the same in-house developed (but not made!) caliber 1120 QP/1 movement that displays the time, day, date, month, and leap year indication and doesn't need to be corrected until the year 2100 which means (if you are my age) that your grandchildren will likely have to deal with that for you (thank god!). The dial is a beautiful silvered dial with a clear display, and the only update here is that the case is pink gold.? ...

SIHH is one of the busiest weeks of the year for watch lovers, when the industry descends on Geneva to see the biggest new releases at the start of each year. This year, HODINKEE has 10 team members on the ground, bringing you the most in-depth, most up-to-date coverage we ever have. There is so much news that it might be easy to miss something by accident. Luckily we've got you covered though C here is a round-up of all our live SIHH 2018 coverage in one place (with the newest stuff at the top), so you don't have to miss a thing. There's always a mad scramble on the Monday morning of SIHH to get over to A. Lange & Sohne's booth to see what marvels the German manufacture has cooked up. This morning was no different and Lange was our first stop of the day. Waiting for us was the incredible Triple Split, the world's first rattrapante chronograph that allows you to split the seconds, minutes, and hours (even the massive German silver model of the watch sitting in the brand's booth is impressive). There were also other, more approachable chronographs on hand, and new takes on classic complications like the big date and the deadbeat second that caught our interest too. Here our founder Benjamin Clymer and editor Cara B...

The first day at SIHH is in the books, and one of the first exhibitors we visited was Audemars Piguet. AP had dozens of new watches this year, and we were eager to see several of them in the metal. But if we're being honest, there was one that stood out above the rest: We just had to get our hands on the Royal Oak RD#2 Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin. The Royal Oak RD#2 is a true record-breaker of an ultra-thin watch that is currently the thinnest automatic perpetual calendar from any brand in the world, period. At 6.3mm thin, it's thinner than any Royal Oak that is currently in production too. That's right C it's thinner than a Ju...

When it comes to design and the balance of looking to history and the future, few can rival Cartier. This year, the brand is revamping its historic Santos line, integrating an in-house movement and a ton of new improvements into a watch that makes a strong statement on the wrist. Additionally, there are a few limited edition and limited production models that take the best of vintage Cartier and reimagine it for today. Cara and Stephen got a chance to go hands-on with the watches, and they shared quite a few favorites. Here's an early look at the 2018 Cartier collection and what you should be looking out for later this year. ...

A few weeks ago, Lange teased just one watch from its then-upcoming SIHH collection, the 1815 "Homage to Walter Lange." The company's modern founder died almost exactly one year ago C during last year's SIHH, in fact C and the brand decided to pay tribute by creating a watch that utilized a version of one of Mr. Lange's favorite complications, the stoppable jumping seconds hand. But when the watch was announced, one thing was missing: a picture of the movement. Luckily, I got a chance to see the watch just after SIHH opened its doors yesterday, and I can happily report back: it's a beauty. Now, anybody familiar with Lange knows that I have no reason to be surpris...

In its inaugural appearance at Geneva's SIHH, Montres Herms presented two titanium executions in its Arceau line, a long-lived collection originally designed by Henri d'Origny that first appeared in 1978. The idea behind the collection at its inception was to channel the spirit of equestrian sports through a case design with lugs that recall a stirrup.? As you can see, there's really just one new watch here, available on either a tan Barenia calfskin strap or a black embossed Barenia calfskin strap. The watch is notable for its 41mm bead-blasted titanium case with asymmetrical lugs and rounded piston-type pushers.? ...

When I first saw the Drive Extra-Flat at SIHH last year, it took me less time than it's taken me to write this sentence to fall in love with it. Now, almost a full 365 days later, I got to re-live the experience. Cartier has taken the slim Drive and updated it with two new case options, the modest stainless steel and the classic yellow gold. Don't get me wrong, the white and pink gold models were and are stunning, but something about hearing "steel and yellow gold" just sounded right to me. So, when I found my way to Cartier's booth yesterday, I beelined for these new release without a moment's hesitation. Seeing them in the meta...

At last year's SIHH we saw the return of the Panthre. Then we had the 100th anniversary of the Tank later in the year. This year Cartier is back with another icon C the Santos. While this watch has always been in the collection, this year they are replacing the existing Santos 100 collection (launched in 2004) with a new one. And while it's always been a little bit of the unconventional cousin of the Tank Louis Cartier, this year Cartier has brought it back in a major way. First things first, it comes in two sizes: medium and large. Both come in the same metal options: stainless steel, two-tone (steel and yellow gold), pink gold, and yellow gold. However, the la...

In anticipation of SIHH 2018, Van Cleef & Arpels dropped the Lady Arpels Plantarium, a smaller version of the Plantarium for men that the maison developed and introduced back in 2014. When I first heard about this piece, I was really excited to see a highly-complicated watch that looked like something I could actually wear (if money were no object and/or I won the lottery). I was able to see the piece in person yesterday, and boy was it beautiful. Not only is this a smaller version of the men's Plantarium, it was also reworked specifically for female buyers. Let's see what this gem is all about. The dial is made of a series of Aventurine rings th...

The Bulgari Tubogas watch has been around sine the 1940s and has remained a staple in the elegant ladies' watch category ever since. The watch has evolved over the decades, and has bene produced in varied metals from white to pink gold to steel. The word Tubogas refers to the metal bands wrapped around the central steel coil in a style inspired by humble Italian piping. This year, Bulgari is releasing several new versions of the Tubogas, including this three-tone version with white, pink, and yellow gold in three sections, giving the appearance that each wrap of the bracelet is a different colored metal. The basic specs are still the same (35mm case and a quartz movement), but the look is ce...

I am going to preface this article by saying that this watch is not a conservative watch. Nor is it an inexpensive watch. So, naturally, I am going to write about it (I just can't help myself). Here we have one of two new releases from Richard Mille this year, the other being the RM53-01 Pablo Mac Donough. This watch has the same profile as other versions of the RM 07-01, but there is a crucial difference: a black ceramic case with never-before-seen gem-setting that places a frame of diamonds around the dial. The RM07-01 with diamond-set ceramic case. The RM 07-01 features the standard tonneau-form case that we know and (some ...

There isn't any watchmaker that contributed more to the oversized watch trend that dominated the?aughts than Panerai. It was at the right place at the right time, and with the help of celebrities Sly Stalone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati turned his company's historical penchant for making big watches into an enduring style trend. But tastes have shifted in the last five to seven years, and if there was any company that had until now resisted the shift toward more discreetly sized watches, it was Panerai. One can hardly blame them. As a brand, Panerai was born of military heritage and a 47mm case size. Big watches have always been, to use a ...

It's possible that no watchmaker has had a more impactful year at SIHH then Audemars Piguet. Not only did AP present what has become arguably the most talked-about timepiece to the show in the Royal Oak RD#2 (okay, maybe that's a distinction it'll have to share with A. Lange & Sohne's Triple Split), but AP also presented what just might have been the largest sheer number of new references, which by our count comes to more than 80 new timepieces. In this video, shot at the company's booth at SIHH, Cara and Jon go hands-on with several of the biggest headline makers from AP this year C apart from the aforementioned RD#2, which we've already covered twice in the past few days. These include...

The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept Watch has a name that invites challengers, but challengers may find it a tough fight. We brought you an introduction to this watch C the thinnest hand-wound watch in the world, at only 2mm thick overall (that's not the movement, it's the entire watch) a short while ago, and we finally had a chance to handle it here at the SIHH. We didn't put it on for a wrist shot as Piaget is treating it (understandably) with kid gloves, but it's pretty astonishing just to see it in person. Two millimeter thick watches don't come around every day, after all C as a matter of fact, they never come around, and never have come around, until now. ...

When you talk about the founding fathers of the mechanical watch renaissance, you routinely hear the names Nicolas Hayek and Jean-Claude Biver, but another that belongs right alongside them, even if he is?remembered for his work with a single brand, is the late Rolf Schnyder of Ulysse Nardin. Schnyder rescued and revived Ulysse Nardin in the 1980s before dragging it into the modern age of contemporary mechanical watchmaking. After meeting his longtime collaborator Ludwig Oechslin, now of Ochs und Junior, Schnyder pivoted his company from being a maker of traditionalist wristwatches to a brand dedicated to championing new technologies and materials, most famously silicon. Though Schnyder is n...

Earlier today, Jon and Jack spent the morning filming at the Vacheron Constantin booth at SIHH. As you may have already seen here, here, and here on HODINKEE, Vacheron presented an all-new collection, FiftySix, based on an historical water-resistant model from the 1950s that was among the first from the brand to feature an automatic movement. FiftySix is squarely aimed at younger collectors, introducing a new time-and-date Richemont Group-supplied movement at a great price. Jon and Jack walk through the three new references in that collection, in addition to new releases in the Overseas and the Traditionelle collections, the latter of which debuts a first-ever automatic tourbillon for Vacher...

Late last year, A. Lange & Sohne announced a limited edition collection created in honor of the late Walter Lange. Mr. Lange became a legendary figure among watch lovers for returning his family's company to its former glory with the help of the Richemont Group following German reunification. The 1815 "Homage to Walter Lange" C which is being offered in 145 examples in white gold, 90 in pink gold, and 27 in yellow gold, as well as one unique stainless steel execution C is a jumping seconds wristwatch based on a historical pocket watch made by the German firm in the mid-1800s. At the time we first reported on this limited edition, which was formally presented at SIHH, we also reported tha...

I've seen a lot of watches this week. I've seen the Lange Triple Split, the Van Cleef Lady Plantarium, the Piaget Ultimate Concept Watch, and the Audemars Piguet RD#2. They're all impressive in their own right and technologically advanced in one way or another. But there was one watch from SIHH 2018 that made me go "WHOA!" the moment I saw it ?(no really, I literally exclaimed "Whoa!" in the the middle of the otherwise genteel meeting), and that honor goes to the Cartier Rvlation d'Une Panthre.? This watch comes in a 37mm pink gold case with a diamond-set bezel, and there are three different dial colors to choose from (red, g...
