Artist Teun Van Heerebeek has been capturing the idiosyncrasies of the watch collecting community through his style of humorous illustrations for the past five years. His work has culminated in a recently released book, 60 Minutes, that includes 60 illustrations and a blurb that can be consumed in under a minute. Not unlike the general tone of his illustrations, its a light and easy read that will certainly elicit a few chuckles.? Heerebeeks work serves as a great explainer on the watch world for the novice watch enthusiast while also serving the longtime collector by poking fun and intelligently criticizing the inside ba...

Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review here, and tell us which guests we should have on! Earlier this week, we hosted a meet-up at our OMEGA + HODINKEE pop-up shop in SoHo with NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott. Well, us being us, we also recorded a podcast with her so that we could share her stories with those of you who couldn't attend. Now, I must admit, this was my first time hosting a podcast and it was also my first time meeting a real-live astronaut. I can now say two things with certainty: hosting a podcast is a little daunting, and meeting an as...

Yesterday, while the team in New York was preparing to unveil our latest collaboration with Swatch, Ben, Eneuri, Stephen, and I had the privilege of celebrating the launch of HODINKEE Japan with our colleagues in Tokyo.?The website went live on Monday, but this was our chance to show it off to the local watch community and to explain a little bit about what HODINKEE is and why we've come to Japan.?The day at the Trunk Hotel in Shibuya started with a small luncheon with industry executives, who kindly welcomed us to Tokyo. As the evening set in, we welcomed an incredible group of guests including local watch collectors, more members of the industry, a few independent watchmakers, and enthusia...

As you probably already know, last week we launched HODINKEE Japan and I was lucky enough to spend a few days in Tokyo to help get our first international edition off the ground. We hosted a pair of incredible launch events on Thursday and between the two I was able to pull Ben, Eneuri, and Dave aside for a quick recording session so we could share our reflections on the day. The entire experience was surreal and you can definitely hear it in our voices. We'd j...

With the Hong Kong watch auctions already underway, we thought it might be fun to take a look back at a pair of interesting Patek Philippe repeaters that were offered at Phillips Hong Kong Watch Auction: Three back in November of 2016. While similar in many ways (and even sharing ownership history before the sale), the two gorgeous vintage Pateks are perhaps more noteworthy for being unique.? Click over to this three-year-old story from HODINKEE alum and vintage watch expert Arthur Touchot as he digs into the history of an oddball Ref. 2419 and a Tiffany-signed Ref. 2524. As with many of these stories, what started as daily wear ...

Swiss watch exports to Hong Kong dropped 30% in value in October versus the previous year, underscoring the severe impact of the worsening political situation there on the local economy. Six months of protests by pro-democracy demonstrators against the Beijing-backed local government have pushed Hong Kong into a recession. Increasingly violent clashes between protestors and the police have forced the closure of luxury retail shops in the world-renowned shopping Mecca.? For the Swiss watch industry, the unexpected downturn in its top export market has become a major concern. Exports to Hong Kong have fallen for seven consecutive ...

For the past two years, we have collaborated with Swatch in creating a limited edition SISTEM51. The first year was the 1984, last year was the Blue Edition, and this year we launched the GENERATION 1986. Based on the original Emerald Diver from the same year, this black, red, and yellow was a big hit with Swatch and vintage collectors alike. To celebrate, Swatch hosted a night of colorful fun at their Times Square location in New York. Everyone came out to celebrate this year's collaboration as well as ones from the past. Here are some photos from the night. ...

Earlier today in Hong Kong, the hammer fell on one of the biggest lots of the fall auction season, a double-signed pink gold Patek Philippe ref. 2523 with a blue enamel dial. As of today, it's one of the most expensive watches to sell anywhere in the world, and the most expensive watch to be auctioned in Asia. This record is despite the fact that it fell well short of its high estimate of HKD 111,000,000, with its selling price of HKD 70,175,00 equating to $8,967,380. Made in 1953 and sold by the Milanese retailer Gobbi, this watch is an extremely rare example of the Patek Philippe ref. 2523 dual crown in pink gold, one of two kn...

Today, in Paris, LVMH, the worlds largest luxury goods group, announced that it had entered into an agreement to acquire Tiffany & Co. for approximately $16.2 billion.?It was the luxurys industrys largest acquisition ever. It doubles the revenues of LVMHs watches & jewelry division, the newest and smallest of the groups five business divisions. (The others are fashion and leather goods, wines & spirits, perfume & cosmetics, and specialty retailing). It's Thanksgiving here in the United States, which means that if you're anything like me you're going to spend the day with family, lounging around and eating way too much. Sounds pretty good, right? I thought I'd add one more treat to the mix though for this year. Our very first episode of Talking Watches debuted a little more than six years ago, and since then we've published nearly 50 incredible videos and stories, sharing the perspectives of the world's most interesting watch collectors. Today we're going back to the beginning.? That first episode was with none other than Mr. John Mayer and it debuted on September 25, 2013. The following four episodes would i...

Over the past 11 years, we have written countless articles, taken millions of photos, hosted numerous podcasts, and published five magazines,?all dedicated to our favorite topic C WATCHES. We have always toyed with the idea of creating a book, but it never felt like the right time. Also, who would write it? Who would photograph it? Who would publish it? And what angle would we take? This year, the stars aligned, and we were approached by renowned publisher Assouline, the same people that brought you The Impossible Collection of Watches, The Impossible Collection of Cars, and Rolex: The Impossible Collection. Assouline is known for its oversized, glossy, coffee-table books filled with colorfu...

There are few watchmaking entities in the world capable the kind of high-end, bespoke, and unique work found in the watches of Vacheron Constantin's Les Cabinotiers. This is the department responsible for 2015's record-breaking ref. 57260, the most complicated watch in the world, as well as the Celestia Astronomical Complication and the Symphonia Grande Sonnerie. All of them are unique pieces that marked important firsts either for watchmaking in general or for the Geneva maison. Today in Singapore, Vacheron presented the latest batch of one-of-a-kind Les Cabinotiers models to a gathering of press. They include a stunning assortment of chiming watches that pay tribute to the field of music, ...

It's a holiday weekend here in the states and we suggest you take a bit of your downtime and invest in a really special story from our man Jason Heaton. Originally published in May of 2012, this is an in-depth piece with story and history to spare, as Heaton digs into the back story of a very important Rolex Submariner and the man who wore it... on all three SEALAB expeditions.? Click the link below to get the literal deep dive on aquanaut Bob Barth and his insanely cool 5512 Submariner. What may have been a literal tool or "just another piece of gear" as Barth put it, would become a storied vintage steel Rolex with pre-Sea...

Its time once again to see whats up for grabs in the world of vintage watches. Theres a little something for everyone this week, with rare picks ranging from a heavily lumed Universal Genve Polerouter, to a hens teeth Wittnauer chronograph, and even a limited-edition reissue of the famed Cartier Crash. To further spice things up, theres also a double-signed example of the original Navitimer reference, in addition to a piece of A. Lange & Sohne associated literature. Lets get down to it.? Wittnauer Ref. 242T Waxing on about Valjoux 72-powered watches seems clich at this stage of the game in wat...

Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review here, and tell us which guests we should have on! There are certain combinations of words that set watch collectors' hearts racing, and it's hard to think of a more pulse-raising utterance than "Steel Lange." A little over a month ago, A. Lange & Sohne released the Odysseus, the brand's first ever serially-produced steel watch. In some ways it's the watchmaker's answer to the popularity of the Royal Oak and Nautilus, and in other ways it's a totally new thing entirely. To get the full story, our founder, B...

My favorite song on Horace Silvers 1962 Blue Note album Tokyo Blues is "Sayonara Blues." Ironically, this also happened to be the song playing through my headphones just as my plane touched down at Tokyo's Narita airport about three weeks ago ("sayonara" meaning goodbye in Japanese). Japan has always been at the top of my list of places to travel to. The food, the fashion, the culture, whats not to love? My sheer excitement after the flight, however, was quelled by the utter feeling of emptiness from flyers fatigue. I slept probably 25 minutes on the flight. The plane was taking a really long time to disembark and, as I stood motionless waiting in the aisle, another feeling was lingerin...

Dubai Watch Week is an anomaly among watch shows. It's not organized by any brand or group of brands, but is instead produced by one of the largest watch retailers in the world. Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons was founded as a family business, operating out of a single location in Dubai, in 1949. Since then it has grown to become a genuine economic powerhouse, as well as the defining retail presence for fine watchmaking in the United Arab Emirates. Still a family-run business, Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons now has over 50 locations in the UAE. Dubai Watch Week is a way for the company to create a platform for interaction and discussion among many significant figures in modern watchmaking. Attendees this yea...

This year you've seen a lot of Monacos (would that be Monacis?) but I promise that you haven't seen one like this. The result of a special project given to TAG Heuer's Vintage After-Sales department, what started life as a 50-year-old Monaco reference 1133B has been transformed into the brand's own gift for the Monaco's 50th birthday. Featuring a display caseback and a hand-finished example of Heuer's Calibre 11 automatic chronograph movement, this extra-funky Monaco is being offered to the collector community at Phillips "Game Changers" auction on December 10th. Proceeds of the sale will be donated to the United Way of New York City.? ...

Some people think Stan Smith is a shoe. Theyre not totally wrong, but hes more than just an iconic piece of Adidas footwear. Hes now a watch, too.? Maurice de Mauriac has recently paired up with tennis legend Stan Smith to produce a watch that honors Smiths 100 victories on the tennis court. Daniel Dreifuss is the man behind Maurice de Mauriac, a small Swiss watchmaker out of Zurich. He approached Smith with an idea: Make a mechanical watch designed to stand up to use on the court, but that also plays off Smiths legendary status as a style icon, with nods to the effortlessly cool style of 1970s athletic wear. Dreifuss credits The Royal Tenenbaums as part of ...

I don't even know where to begin. Look closely at the photos and then come back. I need a minute... What you're looking at is the latest Legacy Machine from the mad creatives at MB&F, the aptly named LM Thunderdome. Following in the heavily domed display case footsteps of last year's FlyingT, the Thunderdome is the product of a collaboration between Eric Coudray and Kari Voutilainen. Offering hours and minutes on a slanted white lacquer dial, the Thunderdome's pice de rsistance is its visually striking three-axis tourbillon, which towers above its dial, barely contained by a fine layer of highly domed anti-reflective sapphire.? ...
