Auctions: Cosmonaut Nikolai Budarin's Flown Speedmaster Is Up At Auction
The watch that cosmonaut Nikolai Budarin wore on no less than three extravehicular activities C commonly known as spacewalks C is coming up for auction on April 9 at RR Auction online. A flown Speedmaster is already special, but a flown Speedmaster on the historic STS-71/TM-21 mission, when the American Space Shuttle docked with Russian space station Mir, is even more spectacular. RR Auction puts the estimate at $50,000. But if we look at the results of last year's Sotheby's auction Omega Speedmaster: To the Moon and Back | Celebrating 50 years since Apollo 11, it might seem that $50,000 for a watch with such provenance is a bargain.? ...
Introducing: The Montblanc Heritage Automatic (Live Pics & Pricing)
Inspired by classic Minerva wristwatches from the middle part of the last century, Montblanc's Heritage collection is a modern reflection of what many have come to regard as watchmaking's golden age of the 1940s and '50s. The cases are elegantly shaped, the dials are well executed, and many of the movements, particularly of the chronographs, are as good as any ever made in Switzerland. The watch we have here isn't a chronograph, of course, but rather a 40mm yellow-gold automatic dress watch that has been paired with a lacquered dial in British racing green and matched with a high-quality sfumato alligator-skin strap.? ...
Introducing: The Bell & Ross BRV3-94 R.S.20 Chronograph
Though the F1 season has been delayed on coronavirus concerns, the watch world moves forward C Bell & Ross have announced the latest additions to the R.S.20 collection as part of their partnership with the Renault F1 Racing team, with this being the fifth iteration of a watch from that partnership. Here we are looking at a stainless steel racing chronograph in 43mm from that collection. The brand is known for designing watches with a particular affinity for history and touches of vintage charm, but you won't find that here. Instead what you have is an earnest partnership resulting in an aggressively modern design. If you look closely, however, you may just make out some vintage details pe...
Writing about fine watchmaking at Montblanc has always come with certain, shall we say, philosophical problems. I have always thought that if you are a critic, it is not necessarily a great idea to think that you should tell people what to think. (Neither, of course, is it particularly helpful or interesting to read a critic who abdicates perspective entirely and then defends themselves by saying they're being "objective." The most interesting critical writings are the antithesis of objectivity, if you ask me). But with the stuff from Montblanc Minerva, I have always felt tempted to visibly shake a finger at the naysayers who dismiss the watches because they say "Montblanc" on the dial or be...
At the 2019 SIHH, Montblanc launched a new Heritage collection that covered a range of watches from simple three-handers to GMT models, to chronographs and even a perpetual calendar. What we have here is an update to an existing watch that introduces a beautiful new salmon dial that feels right at home on this model. The Heritage Monopusher Chronograph is a stainless steel watch that sits somewhere between being a dress watch and being a sport watch, and pays homage to the 1940s and '50s, when Minerva chronographs were in their golden age. Now, this watch doesn't use a Minerva movement, but that means you get a pretty complicated watch at a relatively affordable price. By using the caliber M...
To say it's been a weird week would be an understatement of epic proportions, but just as life goes on, so does the hunt. You've just gotta stay positive, keep washing your hands, and look in areas others might not be for watches and/or toilet paper. With all this in mind, treat yourself to a few minutes of refuge with a Nivada Grenchen featuring a familiar subdial design, a GMT-Master with political provenance, and an early winder as stunning as it is functional. If you're more of a small-watch-on-a-strap type, we've got an original LeCoultre Reverso and a fascinating Cartier for your enjoyment, as well.? 1933 LeCoultre Reverso Ref. ...

Introducing: The Bremont Project Possible Limited Edition
Those of you in tune with either Bremont, the mountaineering community, or perhaps a certain little podcast, will already know Nirmal "Nims" Purja. Nims is a Bremont ambassador, a former Gurkha Regiment soldier and British Special Forces Operator, and the man who holds the record for climbing all fourteen of the world's 8,000-meter peaks in the shortest span of time. Widely considered a crown of mountaineering, before Nims completed Bremont Project Possible, the current record was set at a little over 8 years. Nims did it in less than 7 months (and set another 6 world records in the process; you can read more here). In honor of this feat and their involvement as ...
Hands-On: The Zenith Defy El Primero 21 Land Rover Edition
Zenith has produced a number of limited editions with Land Rover (and Range Rover), and the designs remain generally consistent with the non-limited production models, aside from perhaps an injection of color or a matte finish instead of a polished finish. The "personality" of the watch is generally congruent with the model of the truck as well.? But what happens when Land Rover goes ahead produces its most controversial design change in recent history? The release of the new Defender rocked the car world, as the design changed from traditional boxy and brutish to svelte, tech-forward, and curvaceous. Naturally, fans were divided. The product team at Zenith certa...
Sunday Rewind: Become A Speedmaster Master
Within the hallowed realm of the sports watch, perhaps no model has a more adventurous and sporting backstory than the humble but far-reaching Omega Speedmaster. Most of us know the roots of that backstory as the Speedmaster would transcend its original design brief as a robust automotive-adjacent chronograph to become NASA's tool watch of choice for all extra-planetary activities during an era that saw mankind manage to set foot on our very own moon.? Originally published in 2015, this detailed look back at the legacy and evolution of the Speedmaster is an excellent use of some Sunday free time. Don't miss the included video for...
Introducing: The Breguet Classique 7137
Abraham-Louis Breguet served as principal watchmaker to the French Empire following the French Revolution. At that time, the focus of his life was precision timekeeping. This watch embodies that very idea, which established the Breguet brand some 235 years ago. The Breguet 7137, part of the Classique collection, incorporates multiple iterations of engine turning throughout the dial. Engine turning is the painstaking art of creating patterns in the metal resulting in high-grade decorative finishing and, at Breguet, this is a totally hand-crafted affair. When it comes to precision and design, we find a ...
Introducing: The Breguet Classique 7337
For this year's new releases, Breguet decided to update a few of its classic watches, one of them being the Classique 7337. Originally based on the quarter-repeating calendar pocket watch no. 3833, the 7337 is basically the same classic watch you know and love but has a few aesthetic updates to the dial. The movement is still the ultra-thin automatic caliber 502.3 QSE1, the case is still 39mm, and it still has the same old-world charm that Breguet is known for. This year, the 7337 comes in white gold with a beautiful blue dial and a rose-gold version with a silvered dial. Now, the 7337 already came in white and rose gold but both...
Introducing: The Autodromo Group B Series 2 Safari
The soft articulation of the bracelet, the properly proportioned dimensions of the 39.5mm case, and the way the watch captured the motoring spirit made the Autodromo Group B Series 2 an instant hit. It brought new fans into the fold as well, priced at $975. Right there in the name, it made it obvious that this was a watch that drew from the lore of the dangerous days of Group B rallying. It was an unusual time in motorsport, when cars were more powerful and less safe than they needed to be.? Now, we have the Group B Series 2 Safari, the same watch mechanically, but with a visual twist that riffs off of Safari rallying, a niche co...
Introducing: The Breguet Marine Tourbillon E?quation Marchante 5887
The Marine Tourbillon E?quation Marchante 5887 was first introduced by Breguet in platinum in 2017 and, in addition to the tourbillon, the watch contains a rather unusual complication. This is the Equation of Time marchante, which differs from the conventional method of displaying the Equation of Time. In 2018, the Marine collection got a fairly extensive design refresh, but this particular watch largely follows the same design cues as it did when it was launched in the previous year. While the 5887 retains the design language of the 2017 model, it feels like a quite different watch, with a new rose-gold case, slate-grey dial, an...
Hamilton has just announced the debut of a new limited edition watch, based on one of the most groundbreaking watches ever made: The Pulsar Time Computer, the world's first watch with an LED (light-emitting diode) display. The new watch, the Hamilton PSR, duplicates not only the look, but also the pushbutton illumination system of the original Pulsar. That name refers to a type of rotating star that emits energy at very precise intervals, and which was intended to evoke the wonder of the space age. The new-for-2020 Hamilton PSR. The original Hamilton Pulsar Time Computer was, when it was first announced in 1970, one of the mos...
Pilot Leslie Scott's watch had been sitting in a safety deposit box for many years. Now retired, he wears an Apple Watch, and for most of his career, including the record-breaking flight he's known for, he wore a Seiko that he's lost track of. But it's this watch that means the most to him. The battery was long dead, nary a character displayed on either of the two digital screens that characterize the Breitling Aerospace ref. 65062. Except this wasn't any ordinary Breitling Aerospace. In place of the standard applied marker at 9 o'clock is an "M2" symbol, and at 3 o'clock, a side profile of the British Airways Concorde, a supersonic airliner known for traveling f...
Watch Spotting: A Seiko SKX007 In The New FX Hulu Series 'Devs'
Sci-fi, Sudoku, and Seiko. Is that enough to pique your interest in a television show? Well, either way, these three components contribute to FXs new series Devs, which is now streaming exclusively on Hulu. Devs is a new show from the mind of Alex Garland (of Ex Machina fame) and stars Nick Offerman. The show centers around a technology company called Amaya, and the central character in the opening episode is recruited to work in one of its more secretive divisions, called Devs, before suddenly disappearing.? Mysterious, I know. The show features imagery evocative of 2001: A Space Odyssey (but entirely ea...
A Week On The Wrist: The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus
The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus was released last October, which feels, now, in March of 2020, like a million years ago. The Odysseus was the first full production stainless steel watch from Lange, which prior to its launch confined itself almost exclusively to precious metal timepieces. Sure, there were very occasional releases of some steel watches, but they were insider's watches with a vengeance C Lange did not go out of its way to announce their existence and, to this day, there is still no official confirmation from the company on the actual number made (although certainly, reasonable figures are fairly common knowledge among Lange enthusiasts and collectors). ...
