Hands-On: The Panerai Submersible Bronzo Blu Abisso
When it launched in 2011, the Panerai Submersible Bronzo PAM 382 wasn't the world's first bronze watch. Other brands had done it before, including the erstwhile Gerald Genta line with its Gefica Safari. But from the moment it was released, the Bronzo, perhaps simply by dint of its name, became the most famous one.For Panerai, taking a material practically synonymous with classic maritime equipment and fashioning a watch from it seemed like a no-brainer, even if, in the august halls of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, the notion of a watch deliberately made to tarnish seemed quizzical. Think about all the companies ...

This Week's Vintage Watches In a somewhat poetic moment following a momentous victory, Hideki Matsuyama donned not only a Masters' green jacket but a two-tone Rolex. It really is amazing that Hideki, with the pressure of an entire country on his shoulders, became the first Japanese man to win a major championship AND had the presence of mind to weigh in on the ong...
Introducing: The Panerai Luminor Chrono Goldtech Blu Notte PAM 1111 (Live Pics & Pricing)
Panerai's major initiative at Watches & Wonders Geneva came in the form of a two-pronged approach to sustainability. On the one hand, it released the Submersible eLAB-ID, a concept watch made of 98.6% recycled-based materials, along with an open-source list of suppliers that other watchmakers can use to make their own recycled watches. And they backed up the concept with a?commercial launch, the recycled-based Luminor Marina eSteel. Those are just two of the things they had for the virtual Watches & Wonders Geneva show. There was also an all-new downsized Bronzo C now a very wearable 42mm C and a line-up of automatic steel chronographs debuting the new P.9200 automatic chronograph ca...
In-Depth: The Louis Vuitton Tambour Carpe Diem Is Here To Remind You To Not Get Too Attached
"Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him well ... " C although I bet this is not the kind of skull Shakespeare had in mind. This is a real piece of horological exotica C a watch with a very high relief sculpture of a skull on the dial, with a snake whose tail is a retrograde seconds indication, and with a lever on the side which, when operated, sets off the minute repeater, and also makes the snake spring into action. The tail moves forward to point to the minutes past the hour. The jaws of the skull open to reveal the words "carpe diem." And a lattice falls into place around the flower, changing it into another form of Louis Vuitton's signature flower emblem. There is a lot going on here and quite a ...
A Week On The Wrist: The Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-edition
Nostalgia has a powerful effect on the way we look at the past C it distorts and idealizes what we choose to remember. Does looking at this watch smack you with a sense of nostalgia for the '50s? Embracing this gives us some latitude in how we analyze modern watches that are inspired by historic designs. When it comes to appreciating the original historic references, we're not always celebrating the specifics of a design, but rather the era of the watch. Take the Rolex "Paul Newman" Daytona, for instance. The dial legibility is terrible and the build quality of the vintage models compared to the modern models is decent at best...
Introducing: A Watch With Mars Ambitions
A successful Mars colony starts right here on Earth, and the AMADEE-20 mission put on by the Austrian Space Forum with support from the Israel Space Agency is part of the effort. The mission takes place in Israel's Negev Desert; it's an "analog" mission, but that doesn't mean the "analog astronauts" aren't using digital tools, it simply means that the experiment uses an Earthly environment to simulate the environment elsewhere. In this case, the Negev Desert stands in for the Martian landscape. There's also a non-digital "analog" element to the mission, and that's the Fortis watch made in its honor. The 44m titanium Fortis AMADEE...
Introducing: The Bell & Ross BR V2-94 Full Lum
Following in the footsteps of the recently launched BR 03-93 GMT, Bell & Ross has released its latest luminous experiment. Using a now relatively familiar case design and configuration (via the Vintage collection chronograph style seen in the base BR V2-94 design), the new BR V2-94 Full Lum nonetheless presents a novel take on the look with its contrasting, super-luminous style. The watch comes as a follow-up to 2020's luminous novelties, most notably the BR 03-92 Diver Full Lum and BR03-92 HUD Limited Edition, the former of which, like today's model, also uses multiple contrasting colors of lume to produce its namesake "Full Lum" look. ...
Watching Movies: Brad Pitt Wears a 1970s Citizen Bullhead In A Love Letter To 1960s Hollywood
Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood brings nostalgia to peak levels as Quentin Tarantino builds the Los Angeles of his childhood (literally C he reconstructed full city blocks), unleashing a surreal recounting of the Manson family murders in 1969. The film follows the career trials and tribulations of middling television star Rick Dalton (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and his trusted stunt double Cliff Booth (played by Brad Pitt, wearing a groovy Citizen watch). Editors' Picks: Our Favorite Watches From Watches & Wonders 2021
We saw dozens of new watch releases enter the world during the year's largest trade show, Watches & Wonders Geneva, last week. Some, like Breitling, even appeared just before the start of the festivities! There were big watches and small watches, two-tone watches and green watches, and even some kinda weird watches. Through it all, we asked our intrepid editors to pick their favorite releases from 2021's big show. Who knows, some of their choices just might surprise you. James Stacey: Cartier SolarBeat Tank Must If you're going to go quartz, why not solar? I have been hunting for a Cartier Tank for th...
Introducing: Highlights From Chopard's L.U.C 25th Anniversary Collection
A little more than 25 years ago, Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele looked out on the watch landscape and decided the brand should no longer be wholly dependent on supplied movements. In 1996, Chopard's first in-house calibre 1.96 (named for the year of its birth) started ticking. The following year, the 1.96 made its debut in an elegant three-hand watch with a date function named L.U.C 1860, a tribute to Louis-Ulysse Chopard, who founded his own watch manufactory in the Swiss village of Sonvillier. The sign on the building read L.U.C (for L.U.Chopard), and the year was, you guessed it, 1860. This year, Chopard is celebrati...
Sunday Rewind: Four Revolutions: A Concise History Of The Modern Watch World
Stephen Hawking wrote A Brief History of Time; Joe Thompson wrote A Concise History Of The Modern Watch World. Both works are a fantastic entry point into a larger tradition. In this seminal piece of horological journalism, Thompson opens with a confession. After being assigned the watch beat, he "drove home from work that day depressed. Watches? Really? What can you possibly write about watches once a month?" But it wasn't long before he had discovered just how deep the watch world rabbit hole goes, finding that, "This beat had everything: a 500-year-old consumer product that was an object of both ar...
Hands-On: Tudor's New Silver Dive Watch: The Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925
Since returning to the US in 2013, Tudor has achieved a remarkable pace, and much of that success has been tied to dive watches. The Black Bay line came at the perfect time for the explosion of vintage-effect watches alongside the increasing attention C and values C tied to steel Rolex, vintage or otherwise. As if guided by some Swiss magic-8 ball, Tudor has reliably offered up a hit (or several) almost every year. Sometimes it was just a new color for the Black Bay, other years it has been new models, like the Black Bay Chronograph or even the more recent and very well-received 39mm Black Bay Fifty-Eight. ...
Hands-On: Taking The 41mm IWC Pilot's Chronograph Out For A Meal
Flying used to be romantic. Passengers dressed in their finest threads (and finest watches) to catch a flight. Even the pilots had a stellar wrist game. We generally think about the Rolex GMT-Master when it comes to the golden age of flying. It has a certain cosmopolitan, jet-set spirit. But the pilot's watch itself has a much grittier legacy, and its that pilot watch which we associate with IWC. Its entire Pilot collection is steeped in a fighter pilot tradition C and the brand continues to iterate on that very aesthetic to this day. At Watches & Wonders 2021, IWC released a slew of new pieces into that very Pilot's collect...
Introducing: The Timex x NN07 M79 Limited Edition
Copenhagen-based menswear line NN07 has a cosmopolitan approach to clothing design and branding. The idea is to unify people across cultures. Though the brand name looks like something you'd find on the periodic table of elements, NN actually stands for "no nationality." Having said all that, the designs are distinctly Scandinavian. And now NN07 is partnering with Timex on a sleek limited edition of the American watchmaker's M79 automatic watch, which itself takes inspiration from Timex's other runaway hit, the quartz Q Timex reissue. Each evokes the angular tonneau shapes and elaborate, geometrical bracelets of 1970s watch design. And both the M79 and the Q Time...
Buying, Selling, & Collecting: Im Obsessed With This Japanese Microbrand
The term microbrand technically refers to any small independent watchmaker thats not part of a multinational conglomerate. But in reality it has other connotations. It usually suggests a company producing casual watches at low prices, and perhaps marketing on Kickstarter or various other crowdfunding platforms. No one would really think of exquisite Naoya Hida & Co.?as the second kind of microbrand. But the Tokyo manufacture is about as micro as a brand can get. Total production is around ten pieces a year, with maybe 25 or 30 pieces produced ever. The man behind the brand, Naoya Hida himself, has quite the impressive horological background.?Over the past 30 years, Hida-San has been em...

Just Because: Seiko Made A Marathon Clock With Supreme
Supreme, among other claims to fame, is known for its outrageous accessories. Past releases include full-size Stern pinball machines and Honda dirt bikes, plus crowbars, fire extinguishers, and, notoriously, branded bricks. Seiko, among its other claims to fame, is known for its marathon timer alarm clock in a distinctive shade of bumblebee yellow. The American hypebeast brand and the Japanese watch and clockmaker have now joined forces on the piece you see here. When I first saw the pictures, I imagined it as an enormous full-size marathon clock that hangs above the finish line in professional events C selling a gigantic clock would be a classic Supreme prank.?But as it turns out, this is th...
Is 2021 The Year Watchmaking Truly Goes Green?
Twenty twenty-one has been the year of the green watch, and not just in dial colors ranging from lime to pine. While the young year has for sure yielded a heaping helping of green dials, it's also marked what looks like a pivotal movement for sustainability in the watch industry. Mechanical watches are inherently sustainable objects, intended to last decades or longer and even outlive their original owners.Taking the concept one step further, watchmakers are looking to integrate sustainable manufacturing methods where they can, using technologies and practices ranging from solar energy to recycling. It isn't always easy being green, a...
Auctions: Grand Seiko Makes A Grand Entrance On The Auction Circuit
A rare occurrence, Grand Seiko is appearing in a Phillips Geneva watch auction. "The Geneva Watch Auction: XIII" features not one, but two models from the brand. Included alongside popular (mainly Swiss) brands are lot number 16, a modern Grand Seiko SBGD001, and lot number 173, a vintage Grand Seiko 61GS V.F.A. dating to 1972. While the inaugural appearance of Grand Seiko on the Phillips auction circuit is noteworthy, it would be unfair to say that these are the very first high-end models from the house of Seiko to appear. Last November there was a Credor Eichi II among the lots. It even sold for higher than its estimate. The Credor is the superlative expression...
