Watch enthusiasts tend to have strong opinions, an observation that won't surprise any of our regular readers and listeners here. So when Tudor dropped a pair of precious metal dive watches with display casebacks during Watches & Wonders, the hot takes started flowing immediately. Ben, Jack, and I even got in on the action, but it was clear that the subject of casebacks deserved more attention and consideration. So, here we are. This week I've got Danny and Jame...

Japanese artist Madsaki is known best known for his contemporary takes on classic subjects and reinterpretations of iconic painting from across art history. He prefers spray cans to oil paints and bright, punchy colors to more muted shades. But he's also garnered attention for his paintings of special watches, including everything from old-school Seiko Pogues to Rainbow Rolex Daytonas. He's not just an artist and a watch collector, he's an artist who makes art about his watch collecting.Just last week, Madsaki opened his latest show at Perrotin Gallery New York. Hello Darkness, My Old Friend (I've Come To Talk With You Again) covers a range of subjects, including cigarette ads, street life i...

Over the past several years Ive devoted a not inconsiderable amount of time to thinking about watches that display more than one timezone. They come in myriad versions, and from GMTs to travel times, twin times, and world timers C I love them all. But, you might ask, which GMT is the best GMT? Some may want the mid-century charm of a world timer, others the simple but flexible function of a flyer GMT, and still others the fuss-free (and cheap as chips) nature of a 12-hour bezel. For me, the sweet spot is in an uncommon variety with a very specific layout: The Dive GMT. Characterized as a dive watch...

This weekend's Christie's Hong Kong evening sale has been billed as Asias watch auction of the decade. Composed of just 18 lots and starting at 7:00 PM HK time on May 22nd, "Legends of Time" brings together an assortment of impressive Patek Philippe lots and other historic pieces, showcasing some truly breathtaking craftsmanship. For those looking to get into the action a bit earlier, there will also be a day sale comprising 147 lots beginning at 2:00 PM Hong Kong time the same day. From a pistol-form perfume sprinkler (with concealed watch, of course) to a unique Patek Philippe World Time ref 1415 HU in platinum, the sale artfully blends eras and metiers. In ad...

Building a brand on the name of a deceased master watchmaker is a tricky business. (Breguet doesn't count for obvious reasons C the company was started by Breguet). A watchmaker who was active in the 18th or 19th century may have been rightly famous in their time but the development of more modern timekeeping technology, and especially more sophisticated and reliable automated manufacturing tools, may result in the production of watches that the eponymous master craftsman would never recognize as his own, and whose objectives he might well dislike to boot. This is why I've always liked how Chronomtrie Ferdinand Berthoud approaches watchmaking. Ferdinand Berthoud...

This Week's Vintage Watches In HODINKEE's latest A Week On The Wrist highlighting the Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-edition, Cole Pennington writes, "nostalgia has a powerful effect on the way we look at the past C it distorts and idealizes what we choose to remember." Re-editions and re-issues are always top of mind for the vintage co...

You know a Marina Hoermanseder dress when you see one. Her signature? Unmistakable buckle work C not just the errant buckle on a dress or trench, but tops and skirts made of buckles. Her comfort and familiarity with leather and closures and minuscule details make her pastel-hued dive into the world of watches a no-brainer, yet the Captain Cook Marina Hoermanseder still manages to surprise. The collab blends traditional concepts of perky pink femininity with the modern notion that all watches are for all people. With a case size reaching upwards of 42mm, the Captain Cook is a hearty chonk of a watch C which is why its so delightful to see it given the Hoermansede...

As HODINKEE readers know by now, I love watches and wear them C but Im picky. To make the cut, a watch has to meet four criteria:1. It has to keep time reliably C thats a low bar.2. It has to be hardy. I dont like stuff thats overly precious.3. It cant be too extravagant C that can get re-rationalized quickly. Helmut Sinn had it right when he said he wanted to make watches as perfectly as possible, but only as expensive as necessary.4. And most importantly, it has to have style. I have to like it. This one carries a lot more weight than the first three. If it moves my heart, Im interested. Thats what got me into design in the first place. Okay, but what ...

Glashtte, Germany is a small town with a big emphasis on watchmaking. Located in the pastoral Mglitz valley just 45 minutes outside Dresden, there are barely any hints a capital of the watch world could be hidden among the green Saxon hills. It requires a genuine effort C?and the helping hand of Google Maps C?to visit the city. Maybe that's how the Germans like it. If it were up to me, I'd place a sign on the autobahn leading up to Glashtte proclaiming how special this town of just 7,000 people is: "Exit now to discover Germany's horological heartland." With a photo of a watch beside it.And it wouldn't be just any watch. It wo...

The Watch Just a year and a half since partnering with Save Our Rhino Africa India (SORAI), Hublot has announced a second limited-edition ceramic Big Big Bang UNICO SORAI. Limited to 100 pieces, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this new and very green Hublot will form a donation for Care for Wild, a massive rhino sanctuary in South Africa that is being supported by SORAI. Following the original tan ceramic Big Bang Unico SORAI from the fall of 2019, this new version is meant to invoke the rich green landscape of South Africa in the summer and thus has a warm green micro-blasted ceramic case. Kurono Tokyo is a side project of Hajime Asaoka, one of Japan's most celebrated watchmakers. Asaoka's flagship watches are all hand-assembled, finished, and produced by the man himself; and with the personal touch of a master craftsman comes a hefty price tag. Under Kurono Tokyo, Asaoka designs watches that are industrially manufactured and assembled using calibers from Miyota of Citizen Group. This formula allows him to offer his designs to folks who simply can't afford a hand-finished piece from his atelier. The philosophy is best summed up in the first line from an Instagram post from May 2020: Kurono Tokyo was created to bring Hajime Asaoka DNA to a well-pric...

Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review, and tell us which guests we should have on! Ever since March 2020, everyone I talk to in the HODINKEE community wants to know: "So, how's the watch market doing through all of this?" No single answer covers the entire watch world, and plenty of sectors still struggling. But you know what's not struggling? The auction market. This spring's auctions in Hong Kong, Geneva, and New York made a definitive statement that the secondary market for highly collectable, highly desirable watches is booming C?and that it sh...

IWC and Mercedes AMG have one of modern watchmaking's best-known partnerships. Since coming together in 2004, the team has produced some tremendous watches, but it's this Pilots Watch Chronograph Edition AMG that's going to get IWC fan's piston-driven hearts racing. It's the first 43mm Pilots Watch Chronograph to use the in-house column-wheel 69385 caliber, and that's not even the most exciting bit. It's also the first case for the Pilot's Chronograph that's made from titanium.Additionally, the dial is crafted from carbon fiber. If that sounds a lot like the material make-up of an F1 car, that's because titanium and carbon fiber are used in almost every racing component at this level of m...

Pulp Fiction debuted at Cannes 27 years ago today, winning the Palme d'Or and forever changing cinema. It changed how filmmakers use dialog. It changed how they play with the concept of time. And It changed how viewers engaged with movies."Because it was a film that was so structurally, thematically, and metaphorically complex, it really benefited from the kind of hyper analysis and hyper-detailed research that was just sort of starting to happen on a broad scope via the internet," Jason Bailey, who literally wrote the book on Pulp Fiction," told HODINKEE. "I've such clear memories of AOL chat rooms that were specifically targeted at talking about the minutiae of Pulp Fiction. Obviously, thi...

Another day, another collectible watch, another jaw-dropping auction result. Bonhams ran their Paris Luxury sale yesterday and, among many impressive lots, sat a humble 32mm steel watch with a seemingly random collection of letters forming the dial markings. P A B L O P I C A S S O. Thats right, mounted to a period-correct expanding steel bracelet, this funky little watch not only says Picasso on the dial but it was owned and worn by the man himself. Made by the brand Michal Z Berger Co, this customized Picasso watch uses a 17-jewel manually wound movement that manages time and center seconds. According to Bonhams, the watch was a gift to the artist from the Gre...

To kick off this week, our own Cole Pennington delivered a killer Week on the Wrist with the Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-edition. The video and article delve into not just the watch, but its place in history C taking us on a ride back in time to the heyday of air travel. It seems like a perfect opportunity to dig a bit deeper into the 'dink archives and unearth another Week on the Wrist, with another Breitling AVI Chronograph, but this time vintage C the real deal. That's right, some years back Louis Westphalen wrote about his own Breitling AVI Ref. 765. This isn't the exact model upon which Cole's piece was based. There are o...

A lot of the time, when people look at a nice watch, the words "hand made" or "hand finished" come up. But the amount of actual manual work that goes into most modern watches is deliberately kept to a minimum. There are two reasons for this. First of all, hand assembly and hand finishing are both slower than partially or fully automated manufacturing processes, and when you're making tens or hundreds of thousands of watches a year, they're simply impractical. The second reason is that they are generally less precise, and less likely to produce reliable watches, than automation. This isn't to say that there isn't some hand work involve...

I remember sitting in an empty movie theater watching Christopher Nolan's pandemic blockbuster Tenet and feeling a constant wave of confusion. It wasn't time travel, but it sort of was? As the exposition-heavy dialogue went on, I heard the word entropy bandied about quite a bit. The characters weren't traveling through time per se, but rather, their entropy was reversed. This is a long-winded way to address a recent scientific study on the cost associated with making clocks more accurate. The issue? You guessed it, entropy C a theory of physics that dictates the forward movement of time. Diagram from the study. ...

Like many watch nerds, I mostly wear mechanical watches. Also like many watch nerds, I make an exception for G-Shock. I've been wearing resin G-Shocks for ages and have a soft spot for them. Im usually good for a new one per year. But until I snagged the clear CasiOak GA2100SKE-7A, most of my G-Shocks had been within the strictly utilitarian, all-digital universe of the classic 5600 or the 6900, of which I've owned several examples (and in fact currently own two versions each). I know of plenty collectors who take their obsession with these watches much further C we've all seen the G-shock dissection...
