Breaking news from the earliest hours of the 2016 Baselworld show C Omega has taken on yet another of its all-time classics, the reference CK2998. This is a limited edition watch, and features some of the attributes that make the 2998 such a fun, desirable watch C and they've gone ahead and added a significant dose of color. First things first, the design notes they took directly from the 2998-1: the alpha hands for hours and minutes and all sub-registers. Next, we have a base 1000 bezel, and even a lollipop seconds hand! The lollipop hand is one of the m...

Last week, the Acadmie Horlogre des Crateurs Indpendants (AHCI) announced the winners of the 2016 F.P. Journe Young Talent Competition. Three students of watchmaking, all based outside of Switzerland, were invited to join the ACHI in Basel to witness the world's largest watch fair. From left to right: Tristan Ledard, Anna-Rose Kirk, Fran?ois-Paul Journe, and Anton Sukhanov. Anton Sukhanov from Russia, Anna-Rose Kirk from the UK, and Tristan Ledard, from France, were each presented with a CHF 3,000 check from Horotec for the skill and technique displayed in recent watchmaking and clockmaking projects entered into the Young ...

Last year at Baselworld, NOMOS released the new Neomatik DUW 3001 movement, which is now appearing in a range of their watches. This year NOMOS has decided to apply this very thin, automatic movement to the Tetra series while increasing the size of the case from 27 mm (or 29.5 mm) to 33 mm. The Tetra series, signified by its square case and range of colorful dials, has been a staple for the company but, until now, was only suitable for those who prefer a 27 mm or 29.5 mm case size. The movement is only 3.2 mm thick and gracefully fits into the equally thin square case. ...

Live from Baselword 2016, we have a fresh look at a modern classic from H. Moser & Cie. Moser is, of course, the brand that made waves a few months back with the Swiss Alp watch, but while that was a dose of Swiss humor mixed with marketing gimmickry, Moser is best known amongst aficionados for its ingenious perpetual calendar (which we reviewed here). Now we see the very same caliber, but up-sized to fit into a more casual case, and with 120 m water resistance! That is, for a perpetual calendar, pretty fantastic. Called the Pioneer Perpetual, this new watch comes in 42.8 mm case that is made of both 5N red gold and black...

This time last year, Omega brought out what they would position as the ultimate all-purpose, every day watch in the Globemaster. The watch has a lot going for it as is, but now Omega has upped the ante with a Globemaster with annual calendar complication. Now in 41 mm (the normal Globemaster is 39 mm), this new annual calendar features each month of the year in the 12 facets of the trademark pie-pan dial. Then, a thin blued hand points towards the current month, which then instantly jumps at month's end. The case remains stainless steel while the polished, flu...

TAG Heuer showed it had no intention of forgetting its racing heritage when they launched an online competition to pick out the next Autavia. And on the first day of Baselworld, they confirmed we would be seeing a lot more vintage-inspired chronographs, with a re-edition of the famous Monza. Launched in 1976, the watch was Jack Heuers gift to Ferraris Formula One team to celebrate their (then) partners surprising title-winning season. A win which Heuer felt deserved an exceptional design C and in the '70s a PVD-coated watch certainly hit the nail on the head. The l...

On the heels of the new Tudor Heritage Black Bay Bronze is this little gem, the Tudor Black Bay 36. Yes, that's right, a 36 mm watch from the Tudor Heritage Collection. A welcome addition for any vintage watch lover, or those with a preference for 36 mm watches. The new Tudor Heritage Black Bay 36 features, you guessed it, a 36 mm stainless steel case with smooth bezel. The shiny black dial is based on the Tudor diving watches from the 1950s with large applied white lume dots and "snowflake" hands. This watch is powered by the automatic-winding caliber 2824 movement and is waterproof up to 150 m (500 ft). Additionally, this w...

The Longines Heritage collection is a veritable treasure trove of wonderful (and, usually, eminently affordable) watches based on Longine's historical production, and for 2016 the family has a new member. Say hello to the Longines Railroad, a watch based on "railroad grade" watches made for the rail service in the 1960s. Above, you can see the original Longines railroad pocket watch from the 1960s. The number 280 on the dial refers to the Longines hand-wound caliber 280, an in-house, high grade movement suitable for the demands of usage in the rail service. The term "railroad grade" refers to watches approved for use by train...

This is the best watch I have seen so far at Baselworld C there, I said it. You may have read about the new Tudor Heritage Black Bay 36 yesterday C well, I just had a chance to see it in person, and I can absolutely confirm that in the metal, and on the wrist, it's just as awesome as it looks in the official press images C maybe more so. First of all, the Black Bay 36 wears incredibly well. The 36 mm stainless-steel case lies perfectly flat and is perfectly comfortable on both male and female wrists (as you can see from the pictures below). Just as importantly, it looks in proportion to the wrist, not overwhelming it or seem...

First things first C no Nautilus was shown at Baselworld 2016. We're told you can expect to see something this October, just as we didn't see any 175th pieces two years ago until later in the year. Now that we have that out of the way, let's talk about the big new commercial piece from Patek, the 5930. This watch combines two of our favorite complications C the world-timer and the chronograph. Similar to the 5524G Pilots Watch from 2015, the 5930 is based on an archival piece from Pateks long and illustrious history. But, also similar to the 5524, this world-timer is a very, very loose translation of the original watch C the 1940 reference 1415 HU, a unique piece seen below. ...

The Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is not the most complicated watch in Blancpains collection. But it may be the one it's the most attached to. The first diver of the modern era, it was backed heavily by diving enthusiast and then CEO of the brand Jacques Fiechter. For that reason, Blancpain has been approaching its beloved icon with some caution, making only subtle changes over time. This latest variation brings the introduction of a plasma gray ceramic case C a material which looks like brushed stainless steel, but is in fact a much lighter, harder and stronger substance (and much more resistant to corrosion than stainless steel, which can pit if exposed to salt water and not rinsed properly)....

This week is dedicated to the new releases of Baselworld, but never fear, Bring A Loupe is here for your weekly dose of some of the most interesting vintage watches out there. This week, we will focus on chronographs, starting with a sumptuous Universal Geneve from the mid 1940s. We will also feature a couple of surprising dive watches, from an obscure Lip to a famous modern Blancpain Aqua Lung. Finally, you will find one Tudor Monte Carlo that you should not bid on. This is your Bring A Loupe for March 18, 2016. A Breitling Top Time Reference 7656 C A Large Reverse Panda Breitling introduced the Top ...

This, I have to admit, came as a shock. It came as a shock to me, and every other single person with whom I spoke that I'd consider knowledgeable about collecting Patek Philippe. The Grandmaster Chime C reference 5175 C the most complicated Patek wristwatch ever made, of which there were only seven pieces made C six for the best clients in the world, one for the museum C has returned. It has a new reference, in a new case material, and without all that incredibly ornate engraving, but it's back. First, have a look below at what makes this watch so special. The price for the Grandmaster Chime? Yup, $2.5 million, and we're told the...

Though the tourbillon's rightly associated with the name of its inventor, A. L. Breguet, it is also associated, in the minds of many students of its history, with another name: Girard-Perregaux. One of the greatest practitioners of the art of tourbillon making was Constant Girard, who founded Girard-Perregaux in about 1852, and who invented a configuration for the tourbillon that still influences tourbillon design today: the tourbillon under 3 bridges, often gold. One of the most legendary of all these tourbillons was the one know as "La Esmeralda." The tourbillon known as "La Esmerelda" ...

Okay, so nothing super new here, but this is the type of thing that will get a hardcore PP guy going C the 5170 has been shown in rose gold! The 5170 is, for the uninitiated, the classic manually wound, two-register, in-house chronograph from Patek Philippe. You can read a full review of it here. So what's the deal for the 5170R? Essentially you have the same watch as the last 5170G with black dial and leaf hands, but now in a rose case with silvery opaline dial (5170R-001), and black dial (5170R-010). The 5170G with white pulsation scale is now discontinued, though the black Breguet dial is still in limited production. We've...

This time last year, we went ahead and named the best swag of Baselworld 2015 C it was a flask from NOMOS, and it was full of rum. Now NOMOS is back again this year with what is a pretty nifty little Baselworld survival kit, each individualized for attendees of last night's kick-off party. What's inside? Awesome little artisanal items all hand-selected by the NOMOS team, and assembled by hand. So in addition to the USB stick and card holder, you have a pen, a comb, a piece of chewing gum, a coin to make a telephone call (if you could actually find a pay-phone), an ankle clip for riding one's bicycle in slacks, a shoe polishin...

In this, our fourth installment of Friday Live, we welcome Editor-in-Chief Jack Forster and Vintage Watch Specialist Louis Westphalen to the set. They'll go over the latest news from Switzerland C including ETA production capacity and the latest figures from the Richemont Group; highlight a few watches from the upcoming Phillips, Christies, Sotheby's, and Antiquorum auctions; pick their favorite new dive watches for summer 2017; and share what's on their wrists today. Along with live Q&A from the audience (please leave your questions in the comments section below or in the YouTube live stream), they'll also answer some questions from the "mailbag" C particularly thought-provoking questio...

Last week, Montblanc and HODINKEE hosted more than 200 guests at the Classic Car Club Manhattan to celebrate the new TimeWalker collection. The new chronograph-centric TimeWalker line-up includes a number of interesting models and all were available for collectors to enjoy first-hand, including the epic Rally Timer 100. After allowing guests to settle in with a nice sunset cocktail, Sylvain Costof, President of Montblanc North America, offered a warm welcome and invited everyone to take a closer look at the new collection of watches, on display in cases and and available on tables so everyone could get that perfect wrist shot. In addition to the watches, there wa...

Watchmakers have always sought to improve the precision of mechanical timekeepers, and the tourbillon has been a significant invention in this adventure. At the June 2017 meeting of the Horological Society of New York, Stephen Forsey will retrace the historical origins of the tourbillon, from the pocket watch to the wristwatch. In addition, a selection of Greubel Forsey timepieces will be on display. Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey Robert Greubel & Stephen Forsey began working together in 1999 on a new generation of tourbillons for the wristwatch, culminating with the launch in 2004 of their Double Tourbillon 30. Today,...

The Horological Society of New York's award-winning classes are on the road again! Classes will be held in Los Angeles over the weekend of June 10 & 11, hosted by F.P. Journe, and then HSNY will head to Houston for the weekend of June 17 & 18, where classes will be hosted by Chopard.? At HSNY's watchmaking classes, students discover what actually makes a watch tick. The hands-on course is taught by HSNY's staff of professional watchmakers, and students work on a mechanical watch movement, studying the gear train, winding and setting mechanisms, and escapement. This four-hour course covers everything taught during the four individual courses usually held i...
