For Vieren's founder Jess Chow, the watchmaking world is quite literally in her DNA. Chow's parents, a pair of watch entrepreneurs, met for the first time at the eponymous Baselworld trade fair, and the brand's founder was raised in a milieu steeped in haute horology and fine watchmaking. Given the context of her upbringing, it's apparent that utilizing her own unique experience and point of view to create a watch brand of her own was only a matter of time. The culmination of a lifetime spent surrounded by watchmaking in the Swiss tradition and decades cutting her teeth in the business world as a managing consultant, Vieren made its official launch into the publi...

So many of us young watch fans dream of owning great, complicated timepieces.? But, with the industry as it is, and the Swiss Franc also as it is, truly complicated pieces are out of the financial range for all but the wealthiest buyers.? Frankly, I would love, and I mean love, to own a Patek Philippe 5960 Annual Calendar Chronograph (whether i'd wear it on a NATO strap is another question), but with a retail price of over $90,000, it is (far) out of the realm of possibility.? Still, the pairing of a chronograph with an extended calendar complication - perpetual or annual - is something that I, and many friends and readers I speak to, really lust for.? The question is, does anyone make a wat...

The Transocean Chronograph is the best thing to come from Breitling in a while. Vintage inspired looks, an awesome mesh bracelet, and the use of the mark's beautiful Caliber 01 in-house chronograph make it a really attractive package (though we wish it were a bit smaller than 43mm...). Recently, the big boss man over at Revolution Online, the great Jack Forster, put a Transocean chrono on his promiscuous wrist and wrote a detailed review of it.If you're a fan of Breitling, chronographs, or the use of term "Dagwood sandwich" in watch writing, click on over for the full report....

You think you know fast chronographs? We've shown you Zenith's Striking Tenth (1/10th of a second), FP Journe's Centigraphe (1/100th of a second...kind of) and TAG's own Mikrograph (1/100th of a second), but none of those come close to TAG Heuer's Mikrotimer Flying 1000 Concept watch, a piece first unveiled at Basel live on HODINKEE.The Mikrotimer measures up to 1/1000th of a second and does so with an incredibly powerful caliber.? To give you an idea of just how fast and powerful this caliber is, the Zenith El Primero (what TAG calls the Caliber 36) runs at 5 Hz. TAG's 1/100th of a second Mikograph runs at 50 Hz. The Mikrotimer runs at 500 freaking Hz.? So that means this caliber runs at 50...

Will The Fifth Machine Feature Work From Mr. Voutilainen & Mr. Mojon?MB&F releases one completely new machine every single year. Last year it was the incredible Horological Machine No. Four, nicknamed the Thunderbolt.? To say the watch was a success would be an understatement - it won the Grand Prix for best concept watch, it set both the collectors and art world on fire, and the special version for Only Watch had a very impressive showing last week, pulling in over $230,000.? Still, the HM4 is not everybody's cup of tea - the thing is really funky.? So, the world awaits to see how Mr. Bsser will follow up such a creatively daring piece.? Will he push the limits even further with th...

We at HODINKEE like to show you the most desirable watches in the world on the reg. But we think it is also important to point out the growing number of faked vintage watches. Of course, the majority of fake watches one can purchase these days are copies of new watches. Yet, con artists are getting increasingly sophisticated at making vintage watches that can fool many people, and often do. We at HODINKEE like to show you the most desirable watches in the world on the reg. But we think it is also important to point out the growing number of faked vintage watches. If I told you to think of a vintage Heuer watch, what model pops into your head? My guess is that the majority of you would think of the Heuer Monaco with matte blue dial (reference 1133B), like the one that Steve McQueen wore in?Le Mans. Richard Crosthwaite became infatuated with the watch a few years ago and was a quick study. Before he knew it, he had accumulated an enviable collection and learned all the minor nuances of vintage Monacos. Now, with the release of?Heuer Monaco - Design Classic, watch lovers the world over have the chance to learn from him and see brilliant photographs of all 15 distinct dials found on the original Monacos.Combining a square dial with a striking case and no...

We knew the Patek would go high, but we didn't know it would go this high. The estimates from "people in the know" were hovering around $1million, but when the dust settled in Monaco, the Patek Philippe Ref 3939/A - a minute repeater tourbillon cased in stainless steel - hammered for 1.4 million euro, or $1,909,740.? People wonder why Patek has so much clout in the industry. This is why - unbridled success in the auction world and demand from collectors that no other brand on the planet can match. To see our live pictures of the $1.9 Million Patek, click here....

The Monaco V4 is a really important piece of TAG Heuer history. It marked the beginning of the "new" TAG Heuer - TAG Heuer the manufacture.? The concept of the V4 was introduced back in 2004, three years after the brand was acquired by LVMH and Jean-Christophe Babin was given brand control.? Behind the development of the V caliber was Jean-Fran?ois Ruchonnet (of the Cabestan Winch Vertical Tourbillon) with support from Philippe Dufour - yes THAT Philippe Dufour.?The V4 was set into production in 2009 in very limited quantities - available only in platinum and rose gold.?But, in a recent meeting at TAG HQ in La Chaux de Fonds with Guy Semon, head of R&D, we were shown the only existing Mo...

The Ickler factory in Pforzheim has been producing some excellent watches for some time now; notably the crowd pleasing Archimede pilot and deck watches. ?Another brand from the Ickler stable (complete with Teutonic spelling) is Defakto. Defako, brainchild of Raphael Ickler have been around since 2009 and until the release of this watch - the (warning more Teutonic spelling) Akkord, they had only one, very distinctive model, the Eins C which is a clean and contemporary single hand watch. The Akkord builds on the aesthetic explored with the Eins, but improves upon it in every way. The unmistakably Bauhaus and equally modern style is still there, but it has been taken down a notch. While the Ei...

Ask any watch brand in the world which market is the fastest growing / most important and 9/10, you'll hear "China."? The Chinese love their luxury timepieces, and so do the government officials who rule them.? Well-known activist Huaguoshanzonshuji completed a comprehensive survey of just what type of wristwatches were worn by government workers and published it on his microblog.? It reported that the president of the national development and reform commission for the eastern province of Zhejiang was wearing an $11,000 Rolex and the vice president of the China national school of administration was wearing an even more valuable Piaget. But, before the report could hit a great number of eyes, ...

New Watch Alert: Hublot....and by Hublot, we mean Richard Mille.Despite the fact that Jay-Z has been rapping about Hublot a lot as of late, it appears he's something of a Richard Mille fan.? In fact, Jay was seen wearing one of 50 production RM027 Rafa Nadal tourbillons last week while watching another Mille wearer play in the championship against Novak Djokovic.? Not a bad choice, Jigga man. Related Content: To see golfer Bubba Watson's personal Richard Mille, click here....

For fans of Zenith and vintage military chronographs in general, this one probably looks very familiar. Just last year, Zenith released a limited edition re-issue of its famous Cairelli chronograph issued to the Italian military in the 1960s, but what we have here is a modern interpretation of that form that brings the watch into the modern Pilot collection and adds a few updates. Most notably, the two watches we have here feature cases in either bronze or aged stainless steel, utilize sapphire casebacks instead of the closed steel back found in the limited edition, and play with the green and grey color schemes found in the other Pilot watches. Why This Watch Ma...

The Defy El Primero 21 Chronograph debuted at last year's Baselworld show and got quite a bit of attention. It's the latest in Zenith's long line of high-frequency chronographs, and adds a central chronograph hand that spins once per second to give you a readout to the closest 1/100th of a second around the dial's perimeter. Powering this is a pair of high-speed escapements, one for the main timekeeping function and one for the chronograph (you've even got a power reserve indicator at 12 o'clock specific to the chronograph function). Technically, this is identical to last year's releases, but with some aesthetic updates. The brushed titanium case is paired with a classic panda dial instead o...

In a New York Times article, reporter Marc Santora tells the story of a 600-year-old clock in Prague's old city center that has been stopped to undergo repairs and restoration. Sotheby's has just announced Sam Hines as Worldwide Head of Watches. The position will be based in Hong Kong. Hines started his career at Sotheby's in 1997 before becoming the International Co-Head of Watches at Christie's in 2013 and the International Head of Watches at Phillips in 2015 under Aurel Bacs. His departure from Phillips was quite a shock, and his next move was much discussed; now it has been confirmed. Hines has had his share of hit sales, including the Singing Bird Pistols that sold for $5.9 million, two unknown James Ward Packard pocket watches that sold for $2.7 million, and the Star Caliber 2000.?"The watch market is one of the most global and fastest growing collecting cate...
