Review of the new Citizen Series 8 Diver
Earlier this year James Stacey covered Citizen's Series 8 GMT entries into the brand's collection of mechanical watches that punched way above their weight in a lot of ways. Now, that collection has grown with new dive-oriented releases out of Japan this week. As a bonus, we've got live pictures from our colleagues at Hodinkee Japan to help us go through these new pieces. Let's get this out of the way: it's obvious that these watches have a similarity to the Royal Oak design language. First, there's the octagonal bezel (though the bracelet reminds me a bit more of Girard-Perregaux's Laureato), but what jumped out at me in picture...

Brew was inspired by his days spent sitting in coffee s...
Nearly five years ago, my friend Stephen Pulvirent and I found ourselves at an Omega press event at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. It was a great event built around celebrating the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. But looking back with honesty, I was most excited for one specific element C Omega had connected us both with the opportunity to speak with General Tom Stafford for Hodinkee Radio.? I've had an amazing run with Hodinkee in being able to speak with some truly astounding people, be it for an episode of Talking Watches, text interviews, or for Hodinkee Radio, and this chat with General Stafford will always remain at the top of my list. ...
In-Depth: A Collector's Guide To Vintage 1970s Cartier Watches
The year 1972 marked a pivotal moment in Cartier's history. First, a group of investors acquired Cartier Paris, soon followed by the acquisition of the Cartier branches in New York and London. This consolidation united the three separate houses after they'd been split up following Pierre Cartier's death, setting the stage for Cartier's growth. The second significant development was Cartier's partnership with Ebel to move its watch production to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Before then, Cartier watches had been produced in Paris (or London) using Swiss movements. While production continued in Paris in limited numbers through the '70s, with Ebel, Cartier had set...
Touring The F.P. Journe Factory
It's funny to be invited to F.P. Journe's new state-of-the-art dial and case manufacturers, Les Cadraniers and Les Bo?tiers de Genve case and dial, and be told that all these things I'm about to show youthe tens of millions of Swiss Francs invested in equipment, custom-designed facilities, and talented staffwill not increase the brand's total production.? F.P. Journe will continue to produce around 1,000 mechanical watches annually, plus approximately 500 of its quartz lgante models. Its new building in Meyrin, outside of Geneva, was inaugurated last year, housing dial and case manufacturers solely owned by Journe and representing decades of Journe's dedicat...
This year, Breitling will celebrate its 140th anniversary, and the party kicks off with a somewhat unexpected release into the esoteric and multitalented Aerospace family. This new model C dubbed the Aerospace B70 Orbiter Cfunctions as a double anniversary release as the watch has been created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the completion of the first non-stop balloon flight around the world, which landed in Egypt on March 21st, 1999 (25 years ago to the day). With an orange dial that recalls the paint job for the Orbiter 3 capsule, this Aerospace takes it a step further by also incorporating a piece of the original balloon into the case back of each watch.? ...

This all-white colorway features a white dial, white case, and white velcro strap. It has all the fixings of a normal MoonSwatch until you peer at the upper right sub-register which is where you'll find the familiar Snoopy and Woodstock characters lying atop the Moon much the way they would on Snoopy's doghouse in the Peanuts comic strip. ...
Talking Watches With Hurley Haywood, Legendary Race Car Driver
If you love motor racing, especially endurance racing, Hurley Haywood needs no introduction. The Chicago-born race car driver had a career that would make him the hero of any aspiring racer, including five wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, two overall wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring, and three victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Yes, that's a twofer for the "triple crown of endurance racing," and those are only the highlights. Haywood is nothing short of a road-racing legend, and he's enjoyed a five-decade partnership with two very important names in the world of endurance racing: Porsche and Rolex.? We caught up with Hurley in ...
Sotheby's To Hold Rough Diamonds Watch Sale In April
Maybe 2024 is the year auctions start to have a little more fun. We talked about Sir Elton John's extravagant collection a few weeks ago, and now Sotheby's is hosting a different kind of watch auction. On April 11, during Watches & Wonders week in Geneva, the first "Rough Diamonds" sale will feature 24 vintage watches that live up to the auction's title. There are diamonds, jewelry pieces, ring watches, a tiny Audemars Piguet in the shape of a car, and a whole lot more. "People were getting a bit tired of modern watches, of sporty steel watches," says Manon Hagie, Sotheby's Sales Director and curator of the Rough Diamonds auction....
Hands-On: Spending Some Quality Time With The Longines Conquest Heritage Central Power Reserve
While it's quite the challenge indeed for a dress watch to achieve certified "hyped" or "viral" status, I will say that the release of Longines' Conquest Heritage Central Power Reserve back in January received a novel amount of buzz despite this fact. The relative fervor around this launch definitely piqued my interest, so when I had the chance to explore what the buzz was all about, I didn't think twice. Longines' signature Conquest collection celebrates its 70th birthday this year, and the Conquest Heritage Central Power Reserve we have here was created in large part to honor this milestone. As the name suggests, the most novel...
G-SHOCK holds a unique position in the world of watches, transcending its humble pursuit of creating an ultra-tough watch into a bonafide fashion icon and streetwear staple. While the brand has, of course, expanded to offer more premium options, it maintains a wide variety of watches that maintain a price point of just a hair over $100 without sacrificing anything in terms of utility, style, or toughness. All this is to say, G-SHOCK is, first and foremost, a watch of the people. And, I will go out on a limb and say that the people love something that glows in the dark C my kind of people, at least. So by that logic, combining the already nostalgia-laden vessel of fan-favorite G-SHOCK models ...
What Watch Does Sigourney Weaver Wear In 'Alien'?
A camera seemingly flies through the infinity of the cosmos. It pulls backward over what looks to be the surface of a foreign planet before revealing the shape of an egg. The screen devolves into a David Lynch-style fever dream. It's sensory overload as the egg is slashed open and clips of space adventure horror appear on the screen. All the while, a title is slowly building itself until the words "Alien" are fully formed C met with a simple tagline, "In space, no one can hear you scream." What I've just described is the trailer for Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), a sci-fi slasher film that completely changed cinema in ways it barely gets credit for. I recall a docu...

An Exploration Of High-End G-SHOCK
Your Weekly Shop Brief Last week, G-SHOCK's latest glow-in-the-dark "Hidden Glow" trio arrived in our digital storefront. While we're on the subject of digital watches, we just received a restock of Hamilton's very retro-futuristic PSR Digital.Continuing last week's love for Grand Seiko, on the pre-owned side of the Hodinkee Shop, we just received this Elegance Manual Wind SBGW285, a great example of the brand's skill at refined minimalistic designs that deserve a closer look. Now onto a completely different vibe, we also have this Mare Nostrum Limited Edition Panerai in stock, a re-edition of a chronograph made for the Italian Navy. An E...
Review of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Flying Tourbillon In Sand Gold
The first time I saw Audemars Piguet's new Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon in Sand Gold, I thought I was looking at stainless steel. AP had just announced the watch, a mix of materials to create a new gold alloy that's a softer hue between pink and white. But in the bright blue lights of a convention hall, the watch looked completely white. As it made its way around the circle of press at the event, only when I got it up close, under a bit of shadow, did the rosy tones start to come out of the case. For "just a new material," it was pretty impressive. But I figured that it was a one-time experience, like learning how a magic trick was done.? ...
Hands-On Review Of The Tissot PR516 Chronograph Under $2,000
Tissot has been on a run, introducing a range of heritage-inspired, affordable models over the last few years, from the PRX to the Sideral. Now, it's doing the same with a chronograph, the PR516 Mechanical Chronograph. While larger than the original model from the '60s, it's a faithful update on a vintage chronograph, and accessible at less than $2,000. Tissot introduced the PR line, which in a bit of straightforward midcentury marketing stood for "particularly robust," in the '60s as a line of time-only watches. It added the first chronograph to the PR collection in 1968, to which the new PR516 makes reference. The idea was to m...
Shop Spotlight: The Iconic TAG Heuer Carrera Dato Goes Green
At the tail end of January, TAG Heuer announced that its quirky heritage "Dato" chronograph, which has been the canvas for a vintage-inspired limited edition reboot or two, would finally be ascending the ranks into a stable position in the brand's contemporary catalog. This fateful announcement was heralded during one of the most hectic times in the calendar of the watch world C the annual LVMH watch week, in which all brands under the luxury conglomerate are all duking it out for air time. Now that the dust has properly settled, I think it's about time to revisit the now-iconic-by-name "Dato," and give it more time in the spotlight. ...
Review Of The De Bethune Kind Of Grand Comp
This is the new De Bethune "DB Kind of Grande Complication," a technical marvel of over eight functions (plus a tourbillon) that sums up 22 years of watchmaking innovation and achievement in one quintessentially "De Bethune" package. And this is the new De Bethune "DB Kind of Grande Complication." That's right. The newest release from De Bethune is the brand's third watch with a reversible design. That also means you get the brand's two core design languagesthe "contemporary" side below and the "classic" side abovein one watch. The case And while that's a cool feat in its own right, that's not the most impressive part. ...
