Bennahmias told Le Temps, "I've been in this position for ten years, and I think it's time to move on, also for the good of the company." Review Of G-Shock CasiOak GA-B2100
For all of those in the watch community chasing the same ol' hype pieces selling for way beyond retail price, I prescribe that you wear a G-Shock for a bit (no, I'm not a doctor, but as a self-proclaimed horologist I think I can legally get away with this). Why? Because they're just so damn fun! I was lucky enough to spend a week with the updated G-Shock CasiOak GA-B2100 and the amount of joy I experienced wearing one on my wrist far exceeded my expectations. First off, these are updates to the uber-popular GA-2100s that were released back i...
I seldom write about my own collecting philosophy. That's changing, sure. But I don't like talking about myself, and even more so I don't like talking about my things. In small collector groups and forums it's fun, but these days Instagram flex culture has made the "show and tell" aspect of collecting feel icky. But I'm going to break my own rules here because there's a type of collecting that I think is underserved by watch media, and that's collecting around a watch. We spend so much time debating the watch itself, we can lose sight of how the watch can serve as a stepping stone to so much more. Collecting around a watch makes this hobby more fun. So what exact...
An Interview With Romain Marietta Of Zenith Watches
Romain Marietta turned 40 earlier this month. To celebrate the milestone birthday, he gifted himself an original Zenith El Primero A386 from the reference's inaugural production year, in 1969. Romain wearing the 40th birthday gift he bought himself C a 1969 Zenith El Primero A386. That's how engaged Marietta, the Director of Product Development and Heritage for Zenith, is with his work. Marietta joined Zenith fresh out of school, in 2006, as a 23-year-old intern; 16 years later and he's now nearly as much of a fixture in the company as the legendary El Primero chronograph movement that's now on his wrist. If you've purchased o...

Here we go again. Earlier this month, alongside the announcement of the new Seiko 5 Sports GMT, Seiko also announced a new trio of vintage-themed Prospex divers as part of their ongoing "Diver's Watch Re-Interpretation" series. You know, the same series that brought us the SPB143 C which remains lovely, though I've likely mentioned it enough at this point. Well, now we have the brand-new SPB313 with a white dial, the SPB315 with a black/gilt dial, and the SPB317 with a classic black dial C?and oh boy do they look good.? Based on a re-interpretation of Seiko's vintage reference 6105-8000, these new Prospex models are all built upo...

Watch Auction Trends Midway Through 2022
Lead image, Aurel Bacs, Senior Consultant, Phillips Watches, at the rostrum in New York in early June 2022. Is the party over??It was a reasonable question to ask at the start of June. The fragile stock market, crypto crash, and interest rate hikes have clouded the collective economic outlook for many, not leaving much room to be confident in the secondary market performance for luxury watches. So it was only reasonable to expect this month's watch auctions in New York to disappoint C?but they didn't. Inside Sotheby's New York. Christie's earned $21,743,070. Phillips achieved $30,332,000. Sotheby's...
The Vertex AquaLion M60C Pushes The Microbrand Envelope
The new AquaLion M60C is a darkly luminous dive watch from a small British brand called Vertex. It's a watch C and a brand C I've been curious about for the past few years as they operate like a microbrand but aren't afraid to charge well above what you might expect. Given that the microbrand space has always been deeply reactive to the watch market at large, it's worth considering how we got here and how a brand like Vertex fits into the modern landscape. By my best guess, we are now well into the third wave of the microbrand. Born on the forums in the early 2000s, microbrands were (and commonly still are) small outfits that off...
Myles Kusaba On His Ralph Lauren Western Cushion Watch
In?Watch of the Week, we invite HODINKEE staffers and friends to explain why they love a certain watch. This week's columnist is our very own Buyer C Luxury Watches, Myles Kusaba, writing about his Ralph Lauren Western Collection Rose Gold Cushion. ? My hometown of Folsom, California is famous for three things: a prison (thanks, Johnny Cash), a lake, and an annual rodeo. Although it is now a thriving city with a population nearing 100,000 people, the town's history is firmly rooted in California's Gold Rush. Echoes of the "Old West" were always present when I was growing up. Is it any surprise I love all things cowboy? For most of my ...
One of the many detours I made while in Geneva last month was a visit to Andersen Genve's atelier that overlooks the Rh?ne River. I had the chance to speak with Svend Andersen, the legendary watchmaker who founded the company over 40 years ago, in 1980, and Pierre-Alexandre Aeschlimann, who purchased the company from Andersen in 2015. I've always been aware of the brand and of the pioneering role Svend Andersen had as one of Switzerland's first post-Quartz Revolution independent watchmakers, but this was my first opportunity to meet with the Andersen Genve team. Andersen Genve BCHH "Celestial Voyager" I had the perfect re...
Love watches, but prices have you stressed out?
Between all the depressing headlines about the economy and ever-higher prices for many iconic timepieces, these aren't easy times for a watch lover on a budget. But the good news is that beyond straight-up enthusiasm, watches are still a solid investment. And despite all the gloomy reports, there really ARE some great values still to be had out there C and a surprising variety of types and models, at prices that won't make you wince C whether you're looking for your first watch or the latest addition to your collection. Full disclosure: I'm one of those "first watch" people. With props to the inimitable Sarah Miller, I'm also a bit of newbie to the world of watch...
Rubber Duck Watch Doesn't Tell Time But Works On TikTok
For those who believe a watch is about more than telling time (or who, for some reason, feel nostalgic for childhood bathtub games), NPR recently covered a bracelet with a 3D-printed pool that features tiny magnetic ducks and bubbles. You can arrange the little guys within your wrist-borne tub. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these tiny ducks and their vessel have made quite a splash on TikTok.? Created by a man who reportedly has "a disdain for time" C we'll just call him Kevin C these resin-based bracelets are meant to leverage the sensory experience of playing with a cute toy. After sharing his creation on the social media platform, l...
TAG Heuer Just Made A Purple Monaco
Barely a month after announcing their modern take on the Monaco "Dark Lord," TAG Heuer is back with an entirely different spin on the ever-distinctive Monaco. And this time, it's purple. That's right, in what the brand has creatively called the Monaco Purple Dial Limited Edition, the standard steel Monaco has been fitted with a richly purple gradient dial that fades to a black edge and is set with black chronograph sub-dials.? While this is the first time the brand has created a purple-dialed Monaco, this new limited edition is still 39mm wide and a direct descendant of the original Monaco from 1969. Finished with a purple-lined ...
The Gronefeld 1941 Gronograaf, The First Chronograph Ever From Gronefeld
The Gronefeld brothers, Bart and Tim, have been producing watches and specializing in complications since 2008. These include the 1941 Remontoire Limited Edition for HODINKEE, the jumping/deadbeat seconds complication, and a tourbillon minute repeater. They've been recognized at the Grand Prix Horlogerie De Genve, winning the Best Tourbillon award in 2014 and Best Men's Watch in 2016, for the Parallax Tourbillon and 1941 Remontoire, respectively.? The Gronefeld brothers in their workshop. One complication which they have, until now, notably not tackled is the chronograph. Although chronographs are the most common complication...
Review Of The New HYT Moon Runner
In April, my dear colleague Mr. Forster waxed poetic about the hyperwatch in his review of the HYT Supernova Blue Moon Runner, characterizing the category as "not just expensive C they are also, often, willfully complex, far beyond any demands of the practical and they are there to show what can be done with persistence, imagination, and often, a willingness to deploy technology previously unheard of in watchmaking." Now, HYT is back with an iteration of the Moon Runner that explores the concept of luminescence. This time around the Moon Runner has been injected with a healthy dose of lume. The new CEO of? HYT, Mr. Davide Cerrato...
The New 39mm Tudor Ranger Watch
On July 8, 1952, a crew of twenty-five men set sail from Deptford, London on the south bank of the River Thames, headed into the unknown of the brutal and unforgiving landscape of the arctic for the British North Greenland Expedition (BNGE), one of the most daring expeditions of the 20th century. For two years, these scientists, medical, and military personnel (and five other men who would later join the mission) braved temperatures as low as -87oF on the remote Greenland landscape, their meteorological, geological, seismological, and physiological research setting the groundwork for future arctic expeditions and the burgeoning field of climate science. The missi...
What Watch Did Taika Waititi Wear To The Premiere Of "Thor: Love And Thunder"?
By the beard of Zeus, we have a new Thor film to behold. The latest entry into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is Thor: Love And Thunder, starring Chris Hemsworth, who is reprising his role as the eponymous god of Thunder, and Natalie Portman returning as Jane and also Thor? In any event, the film had its big red carpet premiere in London on Tuesday where its director, the always loose and fantastically irreverent Taika Waititi showed out in a slick blue tuxedo and his trademark salt-and-pepper locks. But of course, he made sure his wrist was properly outfitted. The known watch-loving filmmaker, seen wearing Rolex in the past, marked the debut of his ...
Why Is This Swiss Watch Using A Seiko Movement?
When I recently wrote about the new Nivada Grenchen Datomaster mechanical chronograph, I mentioned C briefly C another curious 36mm Nivada model that harkens back to the 1960s with unabashed vintage charm. Where last week was all about mechanics, today we're looking at what can be best described as a hybrid watch: The Nivada Grenchen Datomaster Mecaquartz. The Nivada Grenchen Datomaster Mecaquartz 36mm (left) and Datomaster 39mm Mechanical (right) Mecaquartz? Gasp. How can Nivada, a newly minted revival of a quartz-crisis casualty, dare use anything that even resembles quartz in one of its watches? This must be a misprin...
