One To Watch: Abingdon Mullin, Founder Of Her Namesake Brand Abingdon Co.
It's possible today is the first time you're hearing the name Abingdon Mullin. She admits herself, "Even though my brand has been around for almost 20 years, a lot of people in the watch world still don't know me." Yet, in the aviation world C particularly among female pilots like herself C Mullin is a star. This is how Abingdon Co. got started back in 2007. "I knew I wanted to fly planes since I was 14 years old," Mullin shares. "I saved as much money as I possibly could through college, and I finally took my first lesson after I graduated. By September of that year, I did my checkride C the final flight exam required by the FAA...
Introducing: Citizen Introduces The Next Generation Of Promaster Skyhawk
In 2024, to celebrate the Promaster's 35th anniversary, Citizen gave the Promaster Land a makeover with a brand new caliber U822 that offered quite a few noticeable technical upgrades to its predecessors in the very niche yet highly functional ana-digi tool watch space. Turns out, the introduction of this new caliber would foreshadow an eventual update across the other pillars of the Promaster lineup, and now we have a trio of new Promaster Skyhawk U830s with an updated caliber and layout. It's a significant departure from the previous Caliber U680-based Promaster Skyhawks, with that old model and dial layout an iconic look in my mind across the many places I gre...

Theres a longstanding history with watches being designed as purpose-built tools for military use, one that has extended into collaborative efforts to honor that heritage. Panerai is maybe the most frequent among brands with these kinds of releases because of its inextricable ties to the Italian navy. Add to that the allure of an olive khaki dial, and Panerai has hit on the perfect formula for an incredibly cool and tough-looking, oversized military-inspired dive watch. Enter the new Submersible Marina Militare (PAM01697) and the Submersible Marina Militare CarbotechTM (PAM01698) to honor the longstanding collaboration between Panerai and the Italian Navy. ...
Around the New York City watch scene, chances are you've run into Craig Karger. He's the man behind Wrist Enthusiast, an Instagram account started in 2015 with a massive following. If you're on the media side of the industry, you'll often get asked if you ever want to make your own watch one day just as many are quick to say no as ones who do. For Karger, the answer was yes. Turning that desire into actual reality is something else entirely, but here, he has done it with Wrist Enthusiast's microbrand endeavor, Wren. Wren, might I say, in a brilliantly clever bit of branding, is a portmanteau of Wrist and Enthusiast, but embraces its final form with a logo referencing the small bird. ...

Strapping it on and pressing play, all is right in the world the perfect watch for the perfect moment. Following up on the success of April's sold-out 1995 Intrepi...
Business News: 39% Tariff On Swiss Imports, Including Watches, Is Now In Effect
The U.S. government slapped a 39% tariff on imports from Switzerland, including watches, after a diplomatic trip to Washington D.C. by the Swiss president and top government officials failed to win a last minute reprieve from the Trump administration. The new tariff rate of 39% came into effect at midnight on Thursday in the U.S. and at 6 am in Switzerland. The surge in costs for importers in the biggest single market for Swiss watches will challenge an industry that is already struggling with a post-pandemic-era downturn in global demand and a rising Swiss franc that has gained 12% against a weaker U.S. dollar this year. Meanwhile, input costs to produce luxury watches have continued to ris...
Orange is the Color of Her Memory, Her Time
The watch came to me the night she left.It wasn't planned. I was in the bathroom of a Toronto hospital, hiding from my grandmother's body in the patient room outside while my mother sobbed, struggling to dress her mother in more cheerful, flowery clothes before the rigor mortis set in. I was scrolling on my phone, trying to block out the grief around me, when a vintage Rolex popped up on my feed C the patina on its dial the exact shade of orange my grandma had worn days before, the night she gave me her favorite lecture on marriage, children, and career for the final time. The color stopped me cold. Happy Friday, and welcome back to Bring A Loupe! We saw quite the response to last week's edition, comments are always welcome and even encouraged! There was some talk about the "T SWISS T" designation on a "no-lume" Zephyr featured. As I attempted to clear up in the comment section, this is something we see in the world of vintage Rolex, with shared dials between lumed and non-lumed variants for ease of production. By the way, it looks like our lead pick from last go around, the Patek Phillipe ref. 2545 in rose gold is still available! As for what did sell, the gorgeous Movado triple calendar in yellow gold with Breguet numerals has been marked as "Sold" the a...
Top Gun: Maverick Brings Back Tom Cruise's Iconic Wristwatch
The original Top Gun (1986) was an unhinged, hyperpatriotic adrenaline rush that served up a testimony to American military might C with a side order of volleyball in jeans. This weekend, just in time for Memorial Day, we get the long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Thirty-six years have passed since the original, though you wouldn't know it by looking at the curiously ageless Tom Cruise, who is back in the cockpit as Maverick, the renegade flyboy and chronograph enthusiast. Instead of being the smooth-faced, smooth-talking rookie, he's now an instructor. One of his students happens to be the son of his old pal Goose (RIP), played by Miles Teller of Whiplash f...
Through Watches, Those Who Have Died In Service Of Their Country Are Remembered
When I was young, Memorial Day meant the first trip of the year to the Jersey Shore along with a hometown parade that involved classic cars chugging down the main street, marching bands, kids riding bikes with glistening patriotic streamers affixed to the handlebars, old fire trucks with blaring sirens, and troop carriers full of soldiers from the local armory tossing out candy to kids. One year, I even drove my own hopped-up 1967 Pontiac Tempest convertible in the parade before it started pouring and I had to call it off. Memorial Day has always been a blast. There's nothin...
Why Are Salmon Dial Watches Popular?
There was a moment around 2015 when rose gold seemed to be everywhere. Apple cast its phones and laptops in a shimmering petal hue. Samsung designed its Gear S2 smartwatch with a tawny dial. Walls and furniture were covered in shades of tepid pink (better known today as "millennial pink"). The color was inescapable. It felt both overtly trendy and surprisingly fresh given this variety of random new applications. And yet, to watch collectors, this color trend was old news. Horologists have long had their own infatuation with the warm shade of gold-pink, more commonly referred to as "salmon" in the watch world. Salmon dials have been a big catch (sorry) for high-en...
Understanding MB&F's First-Ever Chronograph
The leading avant-garde watchmaker and horological concept studio MB&F was founded nearly 17 years ago, and in that time, the company has achieved so many off-the-wall developments and unexpected evolutions that it's almost a surprise to realize they've yet to introduce their own take on a chronograph. That changes today. As of this morning, MB&F has officially unveiled its 20th movement in 17 years; the new Legacy Machine (LM) Sequential EVO stands tall not only as the firm's first-ever chronograph but also for being unlike any other chronograph wristwatch we've seen before. So what makes it so special? Well, the LM Sequ...
Lead image: A selection of pocket watches by master watchmaker C.H. Meylan and a prototype wristwatch by the revived company. On a mild New York City day in October 2008, bidders settled into Sotheby's for what would become a historic auction. The sale would be strange by today's standards. First up: An astrolabe. A gold perpetual calendar Royal Oak sold for chicken feed: $21,250. Gilt Submariners went for $14,000. Daytonas failed to sell at all. And despite the declining market for American pocket watches, the auction's star was the sole known example of a Waltham grand complication C a perpetual calendar five-minute repeating split-...
Introducing The Akrivia Rexhep Rexhepi Chronomtre Contemporain II
Ten years ago, a young watchmaker named Rexhep Rexhepi decided he wanted to do things his own way. Only 26 years old at the time, he left his comfortable job as a watchmaker for F.P. Journe and established his own company and workshop, named Akrivia, after the Greek word for precision. Ten years later, and a lot has changed. Now 35 years old and the leader of a thriving 13-person team, Rexhepi has become one of the most hotly discussed watchmakers in the world, generating international acclaim for his dedication to artisanal handcraft, his incredible eye for finissage, and a friendly demeanor that welcomes all to his atelier in Old Town Geneva. Rexhep R...
Introducing The New-For-2022 Longines Ultra-Chron Diver
The new Ultra-Chron Diver is a near pitch-perfect revival of a very specific 1968 Longines sport watch, all the way down to the frequency of the movement inside. With the new release, announced this morning, Longines is officially returning to the field of high-frequency watchmaking for the first time in decades. The new Ultra-Chron Diver runs at a speedy 5 Hz, or 36,000 vph, and is the first release in what Longines promises to be a new generation of the Ultra-Chron collection, its famous mid-century high-beat series of wristwatches. While vintage-inspired dive watches are common at Longines today C?the company was early to the ...
Nick Marino On HODINKEE Magazine Vol. 10
I spent the first 18 years of my career in newspapers and magazines, and I am here to tell you: It makes no rational sense in the digital age to keep publishing a print periodical. And yet here we are, celebrating the 10th issue of HODINKEE's biannual journal C and I couldn't be prouder. Above we have a special engraving of a Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight, with a system of runes commemorating our tenth issue. This watch is 1 of 1, is double-signed by HODINKEE and Tudor on the dial, and will be sold this fall with proceeds going to a Horological Society of New York scholarship for underrepresented watchmakers. Amazing Ocean Moments With Photographer Becky Schott
For those of you who love of diving and underwater photography, Becky Schott will need no introduction. She's a wonderful and talented photographer who has spent a good portion of her life underwater photographing and filming wildlife, wrecks, caves, and even the inside of glaciers! From Fiji to the Great Lakes and even Antarctica, her work spans the entire globe and I could not think of a better way of sharing what makes the oceans so amazing than to ask her to collect and caption a series of her best moments underwater.? Schott recently became an ambassador for Seiko C check out the SPB297 in the lead photo, looks like they nee...
British Invasion! Bremont Teams Up With Bamford For A Love-It-Or-Hate-It Dive Watch
So much of watch design tends to play it safe C the horological equivalent of lukewarm tea and lightly toasted bread. As such, the familiar becomes innocuous, repetitive, and perhaps even a bit boring. And while I'm not here to form an argument against the character of the mild-mannered dive watch, if you're going to go to the trouble of making a collaboration based upon a known quantity, why not tweak the recipe? Why not make it spicy? The two British watchmakers C who typically have very different perspectives on watch design C have joined forces to spice up Bremont's toolish luxe dive watch, the S500 Supermarine. The S500, in ...
The M.A.D.1 RED Turns Horology On Its Head
We've talked a lot about MB&F founder Max Bsser in the past couple of weeks. Sarah Miller profiled him. Logan Baker introduced his brand-new chronograph. And here I am with a video on his M.A.D.1 RED, a watch in a league of its own. It looks like nothing else (except, of course, its predecessor, the M.A.D.1 C?which was the same thing, but in blue), its distribution and pricing model is new, and it's the first time a watch like this has ever been made available to the public. Some folks will love it; others will find it hideous and ridiculous. I think that's exactly how Bsser wants it. He wants a watch that challenges the status quo. This is it. ...
