A year after the highly technical and aesthetically striking SLGA015 "Black Stream" diver, Grand Seiko has launched a follow-up at Watches & Wonders 2023 by way of the new SLGA023 "Ushio" diver. Sporting a handsome new blue bezel insert and a gorgeous blue dial that could only come from Grand Seiko, the Ushio C which is the Japanese word for tide C is the latest diver from the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 collection.? And by just about any measure, the SLGA023 is a complete beast. Both the case and the bracelet are made from Grand Seiko's High-Intensity Titanium and measures 43.8 mm wide, 13.8mm thick, and 51.5mm lug to lug. At it...

It was day two of Watches & Wonders C?and with information overload from the dozens of brands, countless new releases, and endless security lines, my head was spinning. So I checked myself into the M.A.D. House. I mean that literally. After my first appointment of the day, I absconded for about an hour and a half to the new home of Max Bsser & Friends' workshop in Geneva. After a short car ride I arrived at a house more than three centuries old on the southern edge of the city, a location the company has called home since late last year.? The building has a lot of the original finishing...

A few months ago we caught up with Philadelphia 76ers star, Tobias Harris at the Fitler Club in Philly. I'd briefly met Harris last year at the Apollo Gala, where he gleefully ushered Tiffany Wade to the DJ booth so she could grab a shot of D-Nice's AP. That quick interaction was actually a pretty good teaser for how the afternoon with the stylish Forward was going to go C he's incredibly funny, very chill, and just excited about watches.? Photo: Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images His collecting is both extremely personal and highly self-aware. He buys really, really nice watches with an exclusive pedigree, with a bit of a nod to the ...

As your Style Editor, I am here to tell you that the Chanel J12 is officially having a renaissance. The white ceramic J12 was my high-school dream watch. For the full calendar year of 2005, I begged my mother to buy me one. The answer was no. And now, as a fully grown adult, I respect the fact she allowed zero room for bargaining. Still, nostalgia dies hard. So please join me in a trip down memory lane to peak J12 era, the early to mid-2000s. This was the age of Lindsay Lohan sitting front row at Chanel and posing after the show with Karl Lagerfeld; Paris Hilton was starring alongside Nicole Richie i...

Quincy Jones, Ralph Lauren, Jack Nicklaus, Kevin Hart, LeBron James C these are just a few of the absolute legends I've had the chance to sit down and talk with over the years. But my guest today might actually hop over them all. Kermit the Frog was born in the swamps of Mississippi in 1955 alongside about 2,353 brothers and sisters. He's since gone on to star in both Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, plus dozens of TV specials and films. Kermit goes official with his new Oris! Kermit is, quite literally, the most famous person... I mean frog... I've ever met. He's also one heck of a goofball with some great stories to tell a...

In my hierarchy of Cartier, Cintre still reigns supreme but despite the name, the new Priv Normale is anything but normal. In fact, despite the similar Tank Louis Cartier and Tank Must in the brand's catalog, to vintage fans like myself, there's been a hole in the lineup for a while now without the true, original Tank. But it wasn't bound to be that way forever.? Despite its simple appearance, there's never any guarantee of a runaway success when it comes to "just" a Tank. I think because of the incredibly simple and classic design of the Tank, the collector base is incredibly focused on the littlest of details. Cartier release...

As you know if you've been reading Hodinkee this week, the big Watches & Wonders trade show has been going down in Geneva C opening the floodgates for hundreds of new timepieces from the industry's biggest watchmakers, along with news that some old favorites have been discontinued (and are now likely to become future classics).?This week's Pre-Owned Picks features five watches that have been launched at recent trade shows C including one that we found out at this year's W&W will no longer be available to buy new, which means pre-owned is not just an alternative way to get the watch. It's the only way. Rolex Rolex Milgauss ref. 116400 ...

Hot on the heels of Watches & Wonders 2023, Audemars Piguet is announcing their latest limited edition model, this time to commemorate the 30th birthday of the daring Royal Oak Offshore chronograph. Taking inspiration directly from an early example with a cameo connection to '90s action cinema, we find a specific colorway and the use of some action-ready materials.? Of course, those of you who grew up loving the action films of the 1990s may well recognize the black-and-yellow coloring as a direct and intentional reference to the early Royal Oak Offshore that Arnold Schwarzenegger wore in End of Days back in 1999. Based on th...

One of our main talking points this year for Watches & Wonders is the observation that many brands have pared back the number of releases, instead opting to concentrate on one or two SKUs. We saw this with Lange and the new Odysseus Chronograph, and we saw it C almost to an extreme C with IWC and the rebirth of the Ingenieur. On Monday we wrote up a story on the new steel Ingenieur models C directly inspired by a specific vintage reference (the SL) conceived by Grald Genta (father of the Royal Oak and Aquanaut). While a reissue in theory, what I think these watches represent is a thoughtful way to integrate heritage into a ...

This year, we saw a lot of watches that were previously released models with new materials in finishes. Some were gorgeous, others were underwhelming, but none were as transformed by a material change as the Herms HO8. The HO8 is not what I would call a beautiful watch. Interesting, well-crafted, sporty in a way that neither caters to steel-sport-watch-mania nor leans heavily into good old boy nostalgia. It is one of the more individual-looking watches out there. And while I've always respected the watch and loved it on other people, I wasn't really drawn to it until this year's rose gold and black titanium release. ...

In 35 short years, Frederique Constant has quickly become a go-to brand for enthusiasts looking for quality at an affordable price. But unlike a lot of brands that would stick to the movements on the market and use design skills to provide bargains for their fans, FC has released 30 in-house C "Manufacture," as they call them C calibers. This year they're revisiting a tourbillon movement from 2008 in a 39mm rose gold case, but instead of their normal straight lugs and onion crown, the brand has decided to take a more contemporary approach. That approach, featuring applique hour markers and hand-polished golden hands standing out ...

By now, loyal Hodinkee readers will know that I like big shiny things. The more gemstones I can marvel at during the trade show, the more at peace I feel. Playing with diamonds is my form of escapism; I transcend into another realm, my mind basically leaves my body and for a few minutes, and all that matters is light-play. But I fail to understand why liking diamonds on watches seems to signify a lack of taste for a certain contingent of the watch community. I'm hoping the TAG Heuer Plasma can help build a case for why gem setting on watches is just so undervalued. And how, in this particular instance, the gem-setting is proof of serious scientific innovati...

You couldn't miss Danila Dufour at Watches & Wonders. Putting aside the bright red suit that matched the outfits of her father Philippe Dufour C considered by many to be the greatest living watchmaker C and mother Elisabeth Dufour, Danila walked through her first Watches & Wonders this year seemingly stopped every 10 feet by an admirer of her work. I first saw her talking to Pierre Biver at the launch of the Biver brand. Three days later she was in the middle of the Palexpo talking to Jean Arnault, Director of Marketing and Product Development for Watches at Louis Vuitton, her famous father nowhere in sight. It was all about her. ...

Ralph Lauren doesn't have to make watches like this. Surely, it would be easier to do the "mall watch" thing. But an update to RL's square 867 collection re-establishes this model as the small, precious metal dress watch it should be. While it might not be for everyone, it certainly has its place in the world of watches. And it's way better than it needs to be. The 867 is a square watch that's been around since 2009. It now comes in four variations: a sterling silver or 18-karat rose gold case measuring 28mm or 32mm. I was able to go hands-on with the 32mm rose gold version; after trying it out, the 28mm silver version might have been my pick of the bunch C and p...

Not sure if you saw but the Hodinkee editorial team spent last week at Watches And Wonders. All told they saw about nine million watches and ate just as many convention center Poke bowls. There were watches we predicted, great watches with a few extra millimeters, new stunners, and a few surprises (more on that this week). We had an absolute blast and here are a few of the team's favorites.? A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Chronograph After attending watch trade shows for now over a decade, you realize quickly there are new introduction watches that you see and love and want to own immediately, and ot...

Last week, on the Hodinkee team's final night of Watches & Wonders, we co-hosted a hangout with Lucid Motors at their showroom in Geneva. ?I think it's safe to say that the Swiss contingent C or others visiting the area for the fair C came correct with some incredible watches.? For those of you who don't follow the fast-paced world of cutting-edge electric vehicles, Lucid Motors is an American automotive brand that is based in California and was founded in 2007. The brand specializes in luxury EVs and is currently producing the Air, an electric sedan that combines an innovative ground-up design with jaw-dropping performance and next-generation technology. As ...

The tricky thing about reissues is balancing the old with the new. Chopard has perfectly managed this balance with the new L.U.C 1860 in Lucent Steel, creating one of its best time-only watches, maybe even since the original L.U.C 1860 from 1997. Chopard launched its L.U.C collection back in 1997 with the L.U.C 1860 powered by its in-house caliber 1.96. Independent, in-house, and certified to the highest standards, the L.U.C collection was Chopard's effort to establish itself as a watchmaker amid the '90s rebirth in traditional watchmaking. The original L.U.C 1860 went on to win all kinds of "Watch of the Year" awards. It was just that good. ...

It feels like the industry is in the midst of an open-dialed moment. From the success of the A Lange & Sohne Lumen line to the introduction of Patek's new 5316/50P with sapphire crystal dial, it's looking like everyone is jumping aboard something that could be considered a newly repopularized trend. For Vacheron Constantin, however, doing great open-dialed and open-worked movements just seems to be the status quo. Amidst all the craziness of Watches & Wonders, the release of their new Traditionnelle Tourbillon Retrograde Date Openface (what a mouthful) didn't get the attention it deserved. It'...

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: MoonSwatch never dies. Almost a month ago, and almost a year after the original MoonSwatch launch, Swatch unleashed yet another celestially-themed model into the universe: The Mission to Moonshine Gold. While the naming convention didn't come across quite as smooth as those with actual planetary objects C it did cause a stir yet again. And now, it's backagain, ?for one day onlyagain. To rewind, the Moonshine MoonSwatch was effectively (okay, literally) a Mission to the Moon with a chronograph hand coated in Moonshine Gold (Omega's proprietary gold material). When it was launched last month on March 7, you coul...

If you're tapped into the 2023 watch zeitgeist then I'm certain tiny watches will already be on your radar. They are everywhere and it's easy to spot the trickle down effect: From celebrities to watch enthusiasts on Instagram, and then onto the wrists of downtown New York local "cool kids. I even spotted a server in a very run-of-the-mill London restaurant chain wearing a tiny yellow-gold Seiko last night. Teeny tiny watches (a term coined by Dimpiece founder Brynn Wallner) are omnipresent. The small watch revival is born from, or at least linked to, a wider overhaul of gender labeling in the fashion industry. Not only have some of the biggest, most establ...
