This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written by HSNY's librarian, Miranda Marraccini. Those of you who have been following my posts about our collection at the Horological Society of New York (HSNY) will know that as a librarian, I'm preoccupied with marks in books. I don't disapprove of themCin fact I think they add immeasurably to the story of these paper objects and the people who loved them. At HSNY, we have lots of books that show traces of their owners, but the most adorable are the scrawls, signatures, and doodles left by children. Image 1 One very well-loved children's book ...

Arken is a U.K.-based microbrand that released its first C a titanium diver called the Instrumentum C last summer. Thanks to its distinctive styling and sub-$1,000 price point, the Instrumentum quickly sold out. Now, less than a year later, Arken is back with its sophomore effort C the Alterum. It's an evolution of the Instrumentum that has been tuned for travel rather than diving, and it sports a dual-time complication powered by a proprietary module made for a common Miyota movement.? The form of the new Alterum follows that of the Instrumentum (which can be seen below) in that it's based on a 40mm titanium case (38mm across th...

After slogging through a winter in New York that was cold but yet not all that "wintery," I've felt stuck in a seasonal purgatory, one in which every new watch is a way to envision some summer fun.? Who would have thought I'd be vouching for a very Bulgari watch in a tennis-themed colorway? But here we are. Enter two of Bulgari's most recent releases, the Bulgari Aluminium Capri Solotempo and Match Point Solotempo Limited Editions. These time-and-date watches were announced early in May as a part of a drop of 1990s-inspired Aluminium watches that have been slowly rolling out over the last few weeks. ...

Continuing the legacy of one of the most iconic watches of all time is a lot to live up to. Ask the people in charge at Audemars Piguet what it feels like to have people refer to them as a "single-watch brand" with the Royal Oak. Or recall Thierry Stern's comments about the reasoning behind the discontinuation of the steel Nautilus (for now). None of these comments are true C Audemars Piguet has stuck it out with the Code 11.59, and Patek is flexing their muscles elsewhere as well C yet heavy is the head that wears the crown of an iconic watch.? The Type 20 (military version) and Type XX (civilian version). Few watches are as ...

In the heart of downtown New York City on May 30th, an unforgettable evening unfolded as Cartier partnered with Hodinkee to host an intimate dinner event at La Rsidence by Yann Nury. The gathering, held to celebrate the art of watchmaking, showcased a magnificently curated selection of rare historical watches from the Cartier Collection, as well as a handful of ?limited edition novelties that debuted earlier this year during Watches & Wonders. This elegant affair brought together watch enthusiasts, collectors, and connoisseurs for a night of horological excellence.Event hosts Ben Clymer, Hodinkee Founder, and Pascale Lepeu, Director of the Cartier Collection, guided guests through the e...

Timex is an American brand almost as ubiquitous as Coca-Cola over the past century. Nothing shines a light on Timex's impact in the world of watches more than the quintessential modern Timex marvel: Indiglo technology. While the past 30 years have seen Indiglo dials spread to nearly every Timex model, the invention itself represented a technological revolution in the history of watchmaking. Timex has a pedigree steeped in innovation that goes all the way back to its 19th-century origins. Founded as the Waterbury Clock Company in 1854, it made a name for itself by doing things in a new way. It was one of the first clock-making brands to stamp gears from metal rath...

For many of us, it was our dad who started our love for watches. We may have copied what they wore every day, maybe they bought us our first watch when we were young or as a graduation gift, or maybe they passed down to us their own special timepiece. This year take a moment to give something back to the father that did so much for you. A gift that will last more than the moment, a reminder of how much you care, that will last a lifetime. If you are the father hoping for one of these gifts, send this article to your own prospective gift-givers, for we may love our children, but sometimes they need a reminder of what makes the perfect gift. This year we have two Fat...

It's been 75 years since one of the most milestones in car design history, the moment that Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche built his dream car C the Porsche 356 "No. 1" Roadster C and changed the automotive world. I don't think Ferry himself could have imagined what would come out of that moment. So to celebrate, Porsche Design is releasing a new version of their Chronograph 1 C the 75 Years of Porsche Edition. By now you're probably familiar with the Chronograph 1. It's an iconic watch and was Porsche Design's first product when it was released in 1972. The design still honors the language established by the first watch, with the COSC...

When I think of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore, my mind immediately thinks of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the larger-than-life action hero who dominated the world of bodybuilding in the late '70s, the box office in the '80s and '90s, and even politics in the '00s. They're both big, bold, and brash. Arnie wore one in End of Days and even had a limited edition made for his third Terminator movie. But more important than that, he even wears them off-camera. Unfortunately, I lack the bravado of an Arnold, but I do fancy a nice watch, especially one from one of the most well-respected brands in the history of watchmaking. So, I dec...

Philippe Dufour is celebrating his 75th birthday with a big bash this weekend. More than perhaps any other living watchmaker, Dufour embodies the ideal of the independent Swiss master watchmaker, toiling away at his bench in the Valle de Joux, tools in one hand, pipe in the other. He was the first man to put a grand and petite sonnerie in a wristwatch and the first to do the same with a double-balance wheel. But even with these technical achievements, it's his three-hand Simplicity that has cemented his legacy as a master watchmaker. It's a simple, time-only proposition made the old-fashioned way, the way that Dufour thinks watches should be made.?With that, we wanted to take a look back at ...

Announced yesterday, IWC has just unveiled a new version of the Mark XX pilot's watch in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Mark series. Born of a lineage that can be traced back to the Mark 11 that IWC produced for Britain's Royal Airforce, this anniversary reference differentiates itself with a bright silver-plated dial with black accents for the markings and hands.? Being offered with either a black leather strap or a five-link steel bracelet (IW328207 and IW328208, respectively), aside from the new dial execution, this new Mark XX is otherwise similar to the current spec offered by IWC. That means you get a 40mm case that i...

Richard Mille isn't really known for its toned-down classic designs. If you want something elegant to go with your favorite suit, you might want to look elsewhere C unless power clashing is your thing, which I can totally get behind. That's why, earlier this year when it released the RM 66 Flying Tourbillon with a red gold skeletonized hand holding up the devil's horn sign, it didn't surprise me all that much (nor did the $1,095,000 price tag). What actually shocked me was that RM allowed me to get my grubby little hands on one for an hour or so to shoot some video footage. Now, this watch isn't necessarily my style, but it's cra...

Look at Swiss watch export figures over the last few years, and one trend sticks out like a Rainbow Daytona: watch brands are making more expensive watches. In 2022, the FHH reported that watches with an export value above CHF 3,000 grew 16 percent over the previous year. Overall, the average export value of a Swiss watch has increased more than 50 percent since 2019, from CHF 993 to nearly CHF 1,500. It's something you can feel too. At Watches & Wonders, A. Lange & Sohne and F.P. Journe focused on a single release, both priced well into the six figures and close to seven in the case of Journe's "hand watch." Even larger brands are doing it: Last year, Pa...

Ever since I first clasped myself into a pink Tutti Frutti, a watch I did not initially want to wear but then never wanted to take off, I have been fascinated by Hublot. This fascination has only increased during my time writing for Hodinkee, hitting a climax earlier this year when I was tasked with assessing a new Big Bang Tourbillon in Yellow SAXEM. This lemony timepiece, which has no diamonds, is outrageously expensive ($210,000). You would be excused for thinking that anyone who would deign to buy such an object was either a fool or, a more generous assessment, so rich that they like to play a game where they stumble blindfolded into a shopping mall with a ta...

The Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Four is a watch that I have been unwittingly waiting for since my entry into the watchverse. Let me explain because if you know me and have even just an elementary understanding of my taste in watches, then the idea of me wishing for a modern Tudor is, well, the furthest thing possible from reality. So while I wasn't necessarily waiting for a Tudor dive watch in 37mm to fall from the watch heavens, I was hoping for a modern tool watch that met my (what I consider to be) not particularly demanding requirements: Robust, sporty-looking, 36-38mm in diameter C and the most important part: Well designed and cool-looking enough for me to actually consider wearing outside o...

Citizen is a brand with a passionate fanbase. Much like Seiko divers, the Promaster line has its own devotees C you can spot them roaming the streets of your city with a wonderfully worn-in 44mm Promaster dive watch with that recognizable rubber strap complete with depth measurements printed right on it. I envy those people. The Promaster is not a conventionally expensive watch, but it gets the job done (and more) from the Eco-Drive movement to its dive-ready capability. It's kind of all you need, but it's also kind of enormous. That's the thing that's kept me at a distance all these years C the size. Well, today that changes as Citizen has just announced a sizab...

Straight from the wild mind of Max Bsser, MB&F has created yet another fascinating Horological Machine inspired by the automotive industry, a revamp in fact of the brand's previous automotive-inspired HM8 C now the HM8 Mark 2. And just like a great car, even sitting still, the watch looks fast. Bsser had always dreamed of being a car designer, and while his path went elsewhere, he's drawn on iconic car design for a number of watches in the past. The HM5 has slats that open and close and evoke the futuristic Bertone Lamborghini Miura with its louvers on the rear window. The HMX drew inspiration from the Touring Superleggera....

Sometimes it's fun to dream a little. This is especially true when it comes to hypothetical future watch purchases. With that in mind, we gave a handful of Hodinkee staffers a totally hypothetical budget of $20,000 and asked them to pick a single watch that, should they find themselves burdened with such a stack of cash, they would love to own.? The resulting picks cover a wide range of tastes, from dressy and old school to modern designs, independent brands, and more. Take a look below and then let us know in the comments what you would pick if you were given the same budget.? A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thi...

Whenever there's a big auction result, it's an easy trap to say that the result indicates a larger trend or where the market might be heading. But some watches are beautiful and rare enough that they should just stand on their own as great watches. That was the case with an original Vacheron & Constantin "American" 1921 (Vacheron dropped the ampersand from its name in the mid-20th century) I saw last week that later sold for $87,500 at Heritage Auction. Vacheron only made 12 of these watches, with production beginning in 1919 and the watches all delivered by 1931. In its catalog, Heritage documented this example after sending it to Vacheron, which issued a Ce...
