Conan O'Brien Wears A 'No Time To Die' Omega Seamaster On Podcast With President Joe Biden
There are a number of known watch lovers out there that we haven't really covered in great detail and Conan O'Brien is one of them C though his collection is something of a mystery. As a passionate enthusiast of Late Night television, and the drama that surrounds it (I've read "The Late Shift and The War For Late Night several times over), I've long tried watch spotting Conan's wrist at the famed desk but with little luck. Outside the confines of his studio, he's been known to wear Rolex and a mystery black PVD number among other pieces. O'Brien, a true icon of Late Night, has successfully pivoted into the wildly popular world of podcasting via his show Conan ...
The Citizen Series 8 GMT Review
This past summer, Citizen took the wraps off the Series 8 GMT, a travel-specific spin on the brand's more premium integrated bracelet sports watch line. And, where the Series 8 was something of a departure from Citizen's usual format C Eco-Drive, titanium, etc. C the Series 8 GMT pushes the line even further, with a mechanical GMT movement tucked inside an aggressively angular case beset by a two-color GMT bezel. We covered the original announcement back in June, and I've had a couple of months to test out the new GMT in the "Pepsi" colorway. The specific reference is the NB6031-56E, and it's part of the top-spec 880 line (within...
The AP Royal Oak Offshore Is Due For A Comeback
Trends are cyclical. I am stating the obvious, but bear with me because it's an important framework for understanding the rise and fall of the Royal Oak Offshore. Fashion trends come, and they go, and then they swing back around again. This rudimentary formula has since evolved into a more complicated beast thanks to social media and influencer culture. But the Offshore was born in the early 1990s and came to prominence in the early 2000s, back when the playing field was more evenly paced and trends were given a little more breathing room, so to speak. Let's start with the basics. When a trend is "trending" your average consumer is likely to subscribe to said tre...
Watches In The Wild: Paris, Episode 2: Design And Watches
This week's episode of Watches in the Wild: Paris is all about jewelry design and watch design cross-pollination. Because, dear readers (viewers), I am on a mission to prove that watch design doesn't always have to be so predictable. In episode two we meet up with jewelry designers Nadine Ghosn and Charlotte Chesnais to discuss the untapped potential of enlisting fashion and jewelry experts in the watch space. The enormous success of Carolina Bucci for Audemars Piguet, for example, is proof that there can be a successful dialogue between creative spaces. ...
An Introduction To Vintage Audemars Piguet Watches
Towards the end of 2023, two random things happened that helped me rediscover vintage Audemars Piguet watches not named "Royal Oak":First: This gorgeous, rare ref. 1530 chronograph (one of only 8) from 1942 sold for nearly $200,000 at a small auction house.Second: Rapper (and Pulitzer Prize winner) Kendrick Lamar, one of the most famous and trend-setting musicians around, posted a low-key image of himself wearing a rectangular AP from the 1940s-50s. The 1-of-8 AP ref. 1530 from 1942 that sold for nearly $200,000 in late 2023. It might've been a coincidence or perhaps more cosmic forces colliding, but whatever the cause, these ...
Happenings: Artur Akmaev To Lecture At The Horological Society Of New York
Embarking on the journey of mastering the art of hand engraving is a rewarding and intricate process that requires dedication, patience, and a keen eye for detail. But how can one start practicing hand engraving and what is the process? At the January 2024 lecture of the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), Artur Akmaev, founder of his eponymous watch brand, will share his experience working with different hand-engraving styles and techniques that he has learned and applied to his watches, culminating in his recent collection complete with fully engraved dials showcasing craftsmanship at its finest. About Artur Akmaev ...
Reading Time At HSNY: Women In Horology
This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written by HSNY's librarian, Miranda Marraccini. If you've been paying attention to my articles, you'll know they often note the ways that women show up peripherally in our library collection at HSNY: as loving inscribers and anonymous students; underage or endangered workers in watch factories; and horological tourists marveling at public clocks. The women I'm writing about today, however, are not on the margins. They're main characters of horology, people with enduring influence as authors, collectors, and makers. Many had an impact beyond their lifetimes, and all overcame gendere...
In a scene straight out of a horror film, a New Zealand man by the name of Will Fransen had a harrowing 24 hours at sea when a solo fishing excursion went horribly wrong. We first caught wind of Fransen's story when it was published yesterday by the BBC, but The New Zealand Herald gets the recommendation here for its retelling of the story with quotes detailing the experience. It seems that Fransen had already had a fantastic trip and had hooked and tagged a marlin when somehow, the rail of his boat became dislodged and he fell out. By the time he turned around in the water, the boat was drifting away at too fast a speed to catch. Aft...

Everything about Auro Montanari has an air of effortless cool. The Italian collector and horological scholar is one of the most influential forces in vintage collecting. On Instagram and in his multiple books, he shares his collection under a nom de plume. From his watches to his love of RRL and vintage military clothing, he's probably convinced more than a few watch lovers to buy their first tweed jacket (myself included), let alone inspired people to drop serious money on a watch. Montanari has been featured on Hodinkee's Talking Watches (not once, but twice), but until just a month ago, it was an unofficial rule here to only refer to him by that pen name, John Goldberger.? ...
Breaking News: Frdric Arnault Named CEO Of LVMH Watches
Big news out of Switzerland today as LVMH Watches has a new leader and CEO: the now-former TAG Heuer CEO, Frdric Arnault. The news comes as a surprise given the great strides Arnault has made in turning TAG Heuer into a new brand over his tenure at the helm since 2020 (and has been with the brand since 2017). By the same token, his success with the brand makes him a logical choice to step up into a larger role within the group's broader horological strategic arm. He will now oversee Hublot, TAG Heuer, and Zenith, collectively. Filling his seat at TAG will be now-former Zenith CEO Julien Tornare, who had held that position since 2017. Tornare spent his tenure at...
Introducing: Citizen Goes Full 'Zilla' With The New Promaster Dive Limited Editions
Can you believe that Godzilla is turning 70 this year? But instead of retiring to a duplex in Boca Raton, the Kaiju is still out there striking fear in the hearts of anyone that lives near a coastline or needs a terrifying allegory for the longterm effects of nuclear warfare. Oh, and Godzilla is still rocking those sweet brand deals, like this new collaboration with Citizen for a real "Ecozilla" that goes beyond just a nickname. Turns out it's the 35th Anniversary of Promaster as well and since their beloved and massive Professional Diver 300m has already been given the "Zil...
Watches In The Wild Paris, Episode 3: The Fashion And Watch Communities
The digital space controls everybody's narrative. A lot of us like it that way. We are delivered a sense of community through unlimited access to information and an abundance of other people's ideas: a tightly knit network of people behind screens. Which by the way, is totally legitimate. I actively work for and participate in an online community. I came to this hobby through the Internet. I learn obscure things, I scroll through digital archives with back issues of discontinued fashion magazines, I make new friends and live my best life on the Internet. But it does leave many of us craving a sense of physical community. This is ...
The Watches Of The Golden Globe 2024
Last night, the 2024 Golden Globes were broadcast on CBS for the first time in C um C a long time. The result was an evening far less loose and drunk than awards past, and the jokes from first-time host Jo Koy weren't necessarily hitting (cut to Taylor Swift's champagne sip).? But despite a bit of dryness, the stars came out this year for a lineup, across movies and television, that was packed to the brim. From Barbie to Oppenheimer to Killers of the Flower Moon to Anatomy of C alright you get the idea, this was a memorable movie year. And the results last night were somewhat surprising and added intrigue as we make our way to the Academy Awards in March. ...
Review Of The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 'Father Time' Limited Edition
I won't pretend to understand cricket, except to say I know enough to realize that it's a sport with a reach that's unfathomably large to a simple American such as myself. Today, Oris is introducing the Father Time Limited Edition, a collaboration between the Holstein brand and its partner, Marylebone Cricket Club. The new limited edition is much like the Oris Pointer Date we know and love, featuring a 40mm bronze case, but updated with a clean white dial.? The story starts at Lord's Cricket Ground in London, where a weathervane stands high atop a clock tower. On top of that weathervane sits Father Time, stooping over cricket stu...
The New $400 Swatch x Blancpain Scuba Fifty In Black
The last story that I wrote in 2023 was the final Moonwatch Mission to Moonshine Gold (or so we think). It's only January of 2024 and Swatch is at it again, unleashing a new surprise variation on one of its recent collaborations C but this is no MoonSwatch. Just four months after Swatch and Blancpain collaborated on the Scuba Fifty collection, the two brands are set to release a sixth model in the line known as the Ocean of Storms. I was in Biel/Bienne late last year to get a sneak peek at the original Scuba Fifty collection a few weeks before it launched worldwide. I still remember being completely stunned at the prospect of Blancpain taking its famed, historica...

I remember going to my best friends house down the street after school most days so we could watch FuseTV, watch music videos, and learn the licks to our favorite songs from The Starting Line, Fall Out Boy, Jimmy Eat World, Something Corporate, Underoath the list goes on. There's a reason I got a Les Paul instead of a Stratocaster for my first electric guitar. But as much as the Warped Tour 2005 compilation album basically changed my life, I didnt get to go to Warped Tour. My first taste of live music from that genre and era came from Motion City Soundtrack. Motion City Soundtrack has been selling out shows in Brooklyn for over 20 years now. ...
Review of the The New Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve
Jaeger-LeCoultre would like to remind you that its not just all about the Reverso in Le Sentier. Case in point, a subtle update to the Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve reminded me how the company that used to be nearly everyone's go-to movement supplier hasn't stopped making technical improvements to its great watches. The new Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve might not look that different. Cased in 18k pink gold, the blue sunray-finished dial is pretty striking. The case still measures 39mm by 8.95mm thick, but it now has revised proportions, with slightly elongated and slimmer lugs. It's what's inside that's revamped more dramati...
Timex Marlin Jet Automatic Review
Throughout the past year, Timex with creative director Giorgio Galli at the helm, had showed no signs of slowing down its pursuit of delivering exciting, often heritage-informed designs that appeal to its familiar mass-market audience and seasoned collectors alike. Solid releases from 2023 that come to mind are the Giorgio Galli S2, the Cara Barrett Edition V1, and the ever-irreverent 'iykyk' collaboration with seconde/seconde/ C ?a trio of special and limited edition models that perfectly captures the brand's unique ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of consumers. Now, the brand is charging full steam ahead into 2024 with a reimagining of its affordable, dressy, hand-wound M...
