The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is one of the five or six most iconic watch designs ever. It's one of the few watches that deserves its own exhibit, and from November 3C22, JLC will be doing just that in New York. The Reverso Stories Exhibition is taking over Iron 23 in Chelsea, where anyone can come in, learn more about the Reverso, and even see some of the newest models released this year.? Hodinkee helped open up the Exhibit last week when Ben Clymer and Lenny Kravitz had a conversation about their shared love for all kinds of collectible things: cars, cameras, and of course, the Reverso. Ben was wearing his Tribute to 1931 U.S. ...

Last week, we launched Volume 12 of the Hodinkee Magazine, and in celebration, we threw a little party for friends and staff alike in NYC. From new and long-time collaborators to old friends of Hodinkee and up-and-coming movers and shakers in the watch world, the room was packed with great people, interesting conversations, and C of course C fantastic watches. We had our Editor and Photographer C the ever-talented Mark Kauzlarich C shoot the whole scene, so scroll on for a peek at all the familiar faces C watches and people alike C that turned out to celebrate Volume 12. Thanks to all who came out for the launch; you can get your...

Over the past month, Timex and seconde/seconde/ have released episodic watch duos of the 'iykyk' collection every other week, and now, we can confirm the series is being made complete with the release of episodes 5 and 6 today. We've seen spinning straws (not to be confused with hockey sticks), comic-book-style slaps, oscillating hamburgers, and green punching fists. Now, we're introduced to two new graphic seconds hand characters C a frothy (non-alcoholic) beer mug along with a penguin which I will be so bold as to describe as adorable. As this collection is intentionally shrouded in a tongue-in-cheek irreverence and speakeasy-e...

Something unexpected happens at every auction, and this weekend at the Geneva watch auctions was no different. In December 2020, as the watch market reached its crest, Ben wrote this analysis of the Phillips Racing Pulse auction that I've always enjoyed. Amid a bunch of crazy auction results, he tried to make an argument both for and against why a watch was worth the price it fetched.Three years later, and with auctions in a decidedly different place, I thought I'd try the same. And oh boy, did some things that seemed to make no sense happen this season, and in one auction room in particular. With that, let's look at four results from the Geneva sales and why they do C and don't C make sense...

This guide is intended for those looking to find a great gift for their horologically inclined loved ones. If you happen to fall in love with watches along the way, well, you're welcome. However, if you're in the opposite camp (i.e. a watch enthusiast who loves a great gift), feel free to share this with your favorite shopper, and drop a hint as to what you're looking for to save them the emotional toll of flat out asking what you really want (though, as you'll see, we recommend asking). With the holiday season getting ever closer (yes, it's mid-November and it's time to get in the spirit), you might want to get a loved one the watch of their dreams but find you...

Each week, we present a selection of our favorite watches from the pre-owned side of our collection. Captured by our talented in-house photographers, you get a closer look at what makes these watches so special. This week, we wanted to celebrate the Hodinkee Magazine Volume 12 release with an all-Omega lineup. Inside the magazine, there is a Reference Points article on the Seamaster 300 (i.e. the watch on the cover). So this week, we bring you the first Speedmaster with a METAS Co-Axial movement, both the first and the latest expressions of the James Bond Omega, a modern version of the original 1957 Seamaster 300, and the Ploprof C the ultimate Omega dive watch. ...

Jorg Bucherer, the third-generation head of watch retailer Bucherer, has died, as first reported by Swiss news outlet NZZ. Bucherer was 87 years old. The news comes just three months after Bucherer surprised the watch world upon the sale of the family retailer to Rolex.? Bucherer took over the family retailer from his father in 1977. He came to lead the family business at a time when the Swiss watch industry was dealing with the quartz crisis. But these challenges didn't stop Bucherer. The third generation of a family business founded by Carl F. Bucherer in 1888, Jorg Bucherer transformed it into one of the largest watch and jewelry retailers in the world. When R...

This story appears in Hodinkee Magazine Vol. 12. When we released Volume 10 of Hodinkee Magazine, we did so with a traditional Reference Points installment. The subject for that issue was the Royal Oak. When we released the video for that story we did so with a bit of explanation C for the Royal Oak was more than just a singular reference, but more an entire saga of horology. With Volume 12 now out, it is time to release another iteration of Reference Points in a similar fashion. This is Reference Points: The Omega Seamaster 300. Omega Seamaster 14755 "FAP" Peruvian Air Force. ...

One of the first "mystery" watches I remember learning about is the Universal Geneve Film Compax. There's this old forum post with a few grainy photos of an otherwise typical UG Compax, but with the name "Film Compax" above six o'clock, along with a couple of curious outer scales that no one really knew how to use. Collectors quickly figured out that these red and black scales were used to measure the amount of camera film used. But the Universal Geneve Film Compax reference 22522 remains one of the rarest vintage UGs: Less than 10 have ever appeared. This week, a fresh-to-market example will hit the block at Heritage Auction. I had the chance to go hands-on with...

Here's an exciting development for the Tudor collectors in the audience C the Harrod's Tudor Black Bay Special Edition is no longer a London-only exclusive and is now available for online purchase. Originally launched in 2017, the ref. M79230G-001 is a 41mm steel black vay with a gilt-effect dial and a warm green bezel that was exclusive to Harrods and only available via the brand's flagship store in London, England.? While the Harrods Black Bay remains a model that is exclusive to the luxury retailer, the UK-only market availability appears to have ended. This model, which remains collectible among Tudorites due to its previousl...

Back in September, we covered the most quintessentially-Rado heritage reissue models within the brand's modern offerings and welcomed them into the Hodinkee Shop warmly. We're still riding the Rado wave, and now, we're adding some of the brand's most sleek, unique, and decidedly modern pieces within its square-shaped True Square line to our digital storefront. All three colors of the True Square Automatic Skeleton Rado's tagline is, of course, the "Master of Materials," given that it holds the title of the world's first scratch-proof watch and for its continuous experimentation with ceramics that is still going strong today (a...

Grab your popcorn and dim the lights because evening has come in Geneva, and tonight, the city plays host to the 2023 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genve. And since award shows are nothing without their surprises (along with the requisite pomp and circumstance), we highly recommend hitting the live stream below so you can follow along with the winners of each and every category (and see if you can spot Ben C he's on the jury!).? With 84 finalist watches announced across 15 categories, there is a little something for everyone. The stream will start at 12:30 PM ET, and be sure to stay tuned afterward for full coverage of the winners of the...

The 2023 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genve (GPHG) C the watch industry's top awards show C just wrapped up in Geneva. All the categories have been announced, including the highly coveted Aiguille d'Or, the event's top prize. This year, it helped serve as a fitting capstone for one brand's outgoing CEO.? The GPHG is the best showcase the watch world has to highlight its best and brightest. As mentioned in our preview, it's not perfect by any means. A number of important and influential watchmakers do not take part. You'll notice that there were no watches from Rolex, Swatch Group, and many Richemont brands in contention. But the GPHG is one of the few events that ...

On the very date of Philippe Stern's 85th birthday, Patek Philippe has announced a new touching tribute to the former head of the brand with a new, novel version of Stern's favorite complication. Philippe Stern's son C and current President of Patek Philippe C Thierry Stern, commissioned the watch as a series of 30 to honor his father's lifelong dedication to horology. The reference 1938P, named for Philippe Stern's birth year, is a platinum minute repeater with an alarm and features a Grand Feu enamel portrait of Philippe Stern on the dial.? The movement is a bit of a time capsule looking back over the senior Stern's legacy with...

The first week of November is, historically, a very important one for Swiss watchmaking. Within those first seven or so days, you'll often find the largest and most widely attended commercial auctions from Phillips, Christie's, Sotheby's, and Antiquroum C plus, every other year, the Only Watch Charity Auction (delayed this year). You will also find the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie's (FHH) cultural council meeting, several brand events, and arguably the peak of the 2023 Genevoise calendar of the fall: The voting and presentation ceremony of the Grand Prix d'horlogerie de Geneva, or GPHG. The GPHG, as you know, is the closest thing our industry has to the Academy Awards, and while they are...

Hublot has released a new Sapphire MP (which, by the way, stands for Masterpiece, and which I confess I only just figured out last weekend C we are all learning) with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. It's completely clear and flower-shaped and technically has no dial, just a flying tourbillon that sits inside of a smiley face with little hands that poke out and indices that become visible if you squint hard enough. I think we all understand that checking the time on this thing is hardly the point. Before breaking down the technical specs, let's first examine Murakami's impact on the zeitgeist. Because it's not often that somebod...

If there's one thing we can point to that makes the world of watches a real community, it's the friendships. For us, here at Hodinkee, one of those friends is Yoni Ben-Yehuda, Head of Watches at New York-based Material Good. When we found out that he conducted a sit-down interview with the legendary Jean-Claude Biver (if, somehow that name doesn't ring a bell, click here now), we knew we wanted to be part of the project in some way. Once we saw it, we knew it was something special C a sprawling conversation spanning decades of Biver's career from...

In collaboration with Glashtte Original What does it mean to remain original within an industry ruled by tradition? For Glashtte Original, this is accomplished by doing everything with intention C even if that isn't always the easiest path forward. Intentionality and originality have been essential to the Glashtte Original's legacy, the roots of which can be traced back to 1845 when watchmakers first began settling and honing their craft in Saxony. Today, the brand not only continues the craftsmanship and attention to detail that's a hallmark of traditional German watchmaking but goes one step further by producing over 95% of the c...
