Ten years ago this year, I was asked to join the jury of the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genve (GPHG) C by all definitions, the closest thing watchmaking has to the Academy Awards. It was a very big deal at the time. In 2013, I was among the only American jury members, the only digitally native juror, and certainly the youngest in a field of experts that, in many ways, represented what watchmaking was back then. It was just different then.?It was helmed by Aurel Bacs, then the head of the Christies, watch department, years before he would take over and revamp Phillips, or sell Paul Newman's Paul Newman.?Believe it or not, that 2013 jury also included Philippe Starck and John Mayer. For addit...

There's bespoke, and then there's this: A custom-order Patek Philippe that uses a 13.43 carat portrait-cut diamond as its crystal. It'll be on sale at Christie's Dubai online watch auction beginning October 5 with an estimate of $1C2 million.? The unique Patek Philippe that uses a lasque diamond as its crystal. A client ordered this one-of-a-kind Patek in 1990, supplying the lasque diamond for use. Patek created a custom white gold case and integrated bracelet to fit the diamond, giving it the unique reference 3843/1. According to Christie's it's the third-largest lasque diamond known (the largest is 27 carats and is used to c...

Come a little bit closer. Hear what I have to say (the Neil Young fans will appreciate that C the rest of you might find it a deeply strange way to start a story about a Speedmaster Swatch). Today, at Swatch stores across the world, the Mission to Moonshine Gold continues its 2023 tradition of monthly drops. Last month, we had the pleasure of seeing the Moonshine Neptune C a blue iteration of the MoonSwatch with a Moonshine gold-plated chronograph seconds hand. It marked the first departure from the use of the Mission to the Moon model as the base watch. Well, October represents a return to form. From...

*Please note that this episode includes a few instances of colorful language. Though he's only recently been lionized as a major collector and watch enthusiast on social media, Ed Sheeran has been a passionate collector for over a decade. I've had the pleasure of getting to know him over the years, both through our shared love of writing music and for collecting, and I'm so glad he agreed to sit down with me for an episode of Talking Watches. There is a vulnerability in sharing one's watch collection with the world. Yes, they're material items, but they're called "personal effects" for a reason; they ...

The Code 11.59 line just got bigger by getting smaller. Until now, the Code 11.59 lineup has been stuck with 41 or 42mm cases. Audemars Piguet changed that today with the introduction of two new 38mm watches in 18k pink gold. These downsized cases open the lineup to not only new customers but potentially show a path forward for an expanded Code 11.59 collection. These two new watches, one with an ivory-colored dial and the other in purple feature a different movement than the other recent self-winding Codes, the ones measuring 41mm in steel. This time, the watch is powered by the smaller Calibre 5900, launched in 2022, at 24.2mm ...

I'm an unapologetic TikTok scroller. I can spend hours perusing nebulous content until the whites of my eyes are bloodstained and my right thumb is temporarily paralyzed from overexertion (there's a medical term for this; it's called De Quervain's tenosynovitis). And I am not alone. The short-form video app is used by one-in-three Americans. In fact, TikTok has been downloaded over 3.5 billion times worldwide since its inception. But what makes TikTok different from other social media platforms, and why should watch lovers care? Every time I mention TikTok to 99% of the watch community, I feel a burgeoning sense of hostility begin to form. As if an angry retort i...

Collective Horology is back with another collaborative project, this time with Montblanc. Vintage watch lovers will be excited to hear that it's not just a Montblanc, the new release is an 1858 Minerva Monopusher Chronograph. The new watch is called the "Blue Arrow" P.05 and comes signed with the Minerva logo. Limited to only 30 pieces, the 42mm steel-cased watch includes two of the most iconic features of Minerva chronograph design. First, is the aforementioned classic Minerva logo. And then there's the eponymous rotating blue timing arrow, controlled by an 18K white gold fluted bezel, originally designed to be easily operated b...

If you clicked on the story hoping for some awesome shots of my hot lap in a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS, I'm sorry to tell you they don't exist. But now that I've got your attention, let's talk about the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche. It's a weird but very interesting watch made to celebrate 60 years of both the Porsche 911 and the Heuer Carrera. And if that isn't enough to keep you around, there are some more bits of info (and a brand-new car announcement) for you Porsche lovers. I was lucky enough to be at Rennsport Reunion 7 C a massive gathering of Porsche collectors and fans held once every three-to-five years ...

Earlier this year, we covered the launch of the Longines Spirit Flyback Collection. Now, Longines is introducing the Spirit Flyback with a grade 5 titanium case and the option of either a titanium bracelet or NATO-style strap. Since Longines already offers the time-only Spirit in titanium (which we like!), it's a predictable extension of the collection.? Like the existing steel models, the Spirit Flyback in titanium measures 42mm x 17mm thick (49mm lug-to-lug). Some of that thickness is due to the domed sapphire, but there's no way around it: this is a thick boy. The dial is a sunray anthracite, complemented by a black ceramic be...

This week Audemars Piguet unveiled its new fully pav set Jumbo ultra-thin in white gold. It also released a yellow sapphire on yellow gold version but I didn't get a chance to peep that (still waiting to peep the rainbow set too, which at this point is likely never happening C sigh). AP then did a very welcome and very democratic thing by releasing two additional Haute Joaillerie timepieces in 34mm and 37mm both in pink or white gold, covered with various-sized brilliant-cut diamonds (this is called snowdrop setting in gem-speak). The Jumbo is crafted in 18k white go...

Watch websites are great C just ask us C but books are still essential resources for watch enthusiasts and collectors. Even though we live in a mostly digital world nowadays, it warms my little enthusiast heart that other collectors and researchers are still taking on the painstaking process of publishing beautiful, printed books that rise to reference-level material, sometimes downright collectible on their own merits. I've picked up a few new books focused on vintage watches over the past few months that I wanted to feature, and perhaps even add to your own reading list. A couple of these are must-haves, joining the ranks of books like Moonwatch Only, Patek Phi...

Major news from Monaco today as Only Watch, the biennial charity auction, has been postponed until 2024. This follows recent developments including Audemars Piguet's decision to remove itself from the auction early last week and mounting calls for greater financial transparency.? The sale, in partnership with Christie's, was originally planned for November 5, 2023, in Geneva, but Only Watch issued a statement today explaining that while they've done their best to answer questions in a timely manner and prepare an audit of its finances, "the time for certification, changes in governance and the imminent auction do not coincide. We cannot bring ourselves to cast do...

In the mid-1990s the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) Museum asked American watchmaker Roland Murphy to repair a Patek Philippe Grand Complication an important timepiece in the James Arthur collection. They were making a video and needed the repeater mechanism to function. Additionally, photographs were taken during the repair and restoration process to give a glimpse inside the extremely rare and complicated watch. The 35mm negatives were recently scanned and were shared for the first time in the spring of 2023. At the November lecture of the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), Murphy will share the scans and his experience ...

I'd like to tell you this is just a photo report on Monaco Legend Group's fall auction, but it's really not that simple. It's really a photo report from a gathering of friends who get together to catch up, have a few drinks, some nice dinners, and talk about and C yes, of course C?buy and sell a few watches as well. The last time I was in Monaco, I was so overwhelmed I had to put together two photo reports (part 1 and part 2 are here). This time, I tried to pare it back. The auction attendees didn't get the memo to be more reserved, however. Sure, the partying was a bit more controlled this time, but both the watches and the bois...

It's the 24th of October, which is an auspicious day for Lange enthusiasts. It marks the anniversary of its rebirth (29 years today) and usually means an exciting release for the brand. As such, allow me to introduce the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater in Honeygold. Let's start with the case material: Honeygold is A. Lange & Sohne proprietary alloy. I first heard about it when James Stacey told me about his grail watch (Lange 1 in Honeygold) on the back of a bus in Geneva after a very long dinner during Watches and Wonders. It was enthralling, but I was ready to pass out from too much pain et fromage, so I buried it in the back of m...

While Herms retains its status as a perennial icon of luxury leather goods, in recent years, we've seen the brand channel its unique design language and penchant for exquisite quality into its watch offerings with equal fervor. With the release of the H08 family at Watches And Wonders 2021, the sporty-chic evolution within the brand's catalog was met with immediate success and has continued to achieve popularity rivaling that of its own Birkin. In fact, we were so infatuated with the H08 that we worked with the brand to create our own take on it that same year. This spring, we first reported on the new Rose Gold rendition of the H08 that debuted at this year's W...

Our friends at Worn & Wound have teamed up with Maen, a young watch brand based in Stockholm, Sweden, for an affordable option for the integrated sports watch space that ticks a ton of boxes. Available exclusively through the Windup Watch Shop beginning October 25, 2023, at 12pm ET, the new Maen x Worn & Wound "Manhattan," measuring 37mm and cased in stainless steel, comes with a pared-down design that leans more toward "dressy" without being formal. In either a red or blue fum dial, the watch features stripped-down indices for a sleek design. There are applied markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 but the rest of the hours (or fiv...

I know. It's only a color change and it shouldn't be that big of a deal, but when one of the most popular dive watches on the market, from one of the biggest watch brands in the world, decides to go green C it's bound to garner some attention. Right? Right! The modern Omega Seamaster Diver 300m went green back in 2022 and I'll have to admit, I initially gave it a few eye rolls. You see, green is so in right now, at least in the watch industry, and a lot of manufacturers jumped on that bandwagon with varying results. In my opinion, green is a difficult color to get right. Some brands went a bit too bright, making their watches a l...
