Hardly a day goes by that I don't head over to my bookshelf to pick up a title about watches, but I'm not sure I've yet read one quite like Hands of Time: A Watchmaker's History by Rebecca Struthers."This book is a history of timekeeping, and of time itself, but from my irregular perspective as a 21st-century watchmaker," Struthers writes. Robert Leslie was at the forefront of invention and innovation in 18th-century Philadelphia and was awarded America's first clock and watch patents. However, his contributions were discounted until one of his patented watches was found in 2012 which prompted renewed research. The trail amazingly led to George Washington and the time of his death on December 14, 1799, when his last breath was preserved for eternity on the dial of a colonial-made chamber clock.
