Hardly a day goes by that I don't head over to my bookshelf to pick up a title about watches, but I'm not sure I've yet read one quite like Hands of Time: A Watchmaker's History by Rebecca Struthers."This book is a history of timekeeping, and of time itself, but from my irregular perspective as a 21st-century watchmaker," Struthers writes. She's a British watchmaker based outside of Birmingham, who also holds a Ph.D. in horology due to her dedicated study and original research in the history of horology (I wrote a longer profile about her earlier this year). The book is a brisk 280-page history of the watch that tells the story of its main characters and objects....

It's been a busy week over here at Car and Driv... oh wait no, this is still Hodinkee. And while I mentioned the ties between automotive and horological history on our article earlier this week where Rolls-Royce announced their first Droptail with an AP dashboard clock/watch, I didn't expect something so similar so soon. Well, similar and yet wildly different. Vacheron Constantin held a digital press preview earlier this week, where they unveiled a new Les Cabinotiers Armillary Tourbillon designed exclusively for the Rolls-Royce Amethyst Droptail. The car is the second in a series of completely bespoke "coachbuilt" cars from the ...

It's been 25 years since the release of the first Grand Seiko 9S caliber and to celebrate, the brand has announced two new GMTs to suit a variety of needs from Grand Seiko fans. With the SBGJ275 and SBGM253, Grand Seiko is covering a lot of ground. Let's start with the sportier option. The SBGJ275. The new SBGJ275 is a part of the Sport Collection and it hits that sportiness in the most poetic Grand Seiko way. The blue dial is inspired by the sky over Mt. Iwate, the peak visible from the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, when it is blankete...

IWC is back with another U.S. Naval aviator squadron watch, this time with the Strike Fighter Squadron 41 (VFA-41), also known as the "Black Aces," based at Naval Air Station Lemoore in California. And for the first time in a production IWC pilot's watch, the new Pilot's Watch Automatic 41 Black Aces has a fully lumed dial with hands to match. With a 41mm by 11.4mm thick, the watch should feel familiar at first glance, with the same hacking seconds caliber 32100 as the 41mm Top Gun. But the dial certainly stands out and makes it a very different-looking watch. SuperLumiNova pigments are mixed with a binder, cast into a circular m...

Passionate automotive driver-turned indie watchmaking legend Laurent Ferrier is back with a Srie Atelier (limited edition) Sport Auto watch inspired by Ferrier's racing past. Playing off an iconic 1970s car and using the brand's sporty framework, the new Sport Auto 40 has a lot going for it. We're talking about a 41.5mm by 12.7mm grade 5 titanium case with integrated titanium bracelet and 120 meters of water resistance, exquisitely-finished caliber LF270.01 micro-rotor movement with 72 hours of power reserve, and a beautiful gradient viridian green opaline dial. But what about the "40" in the name? L...

Then, on November 18 and 19, 2023, HSNY returns to Miami with host F.P. Journe. At HSNY's Horological Education classes, students discover what actually makes a watch tick under the guidance of the HSNY's staff of professional watchmakers. The weekend half-day classes cover everything taught during the individual evening classes held in New York.Enrollment is now open for the ...

Audemars Piguet has just released two new self-winding Royal Oaks and two new Royal Oak Offshores in collaboration with fashion designer Matthew Williams and his streetwear label 1017 Alyx 9SM. Williams is something of a fashion industry maverick. He currently sits at the helm of luxury fashion house Givenchy as its creative director across both women's and menswear, producing a mix of utility-goth, streetwear-meets-high fashion: structured but distressed aesthetic. We're talking multi-layered but always sharp tailoring plus unusual ?accessories with their smooth metal details. It's half grunge half streetwear and lots of disruption. ...

This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written by HSNY's librarian, Miranda Marraccini. It's back to school this month for lots of kids and adults. While you might be busy stocking your kid's backpack with Trapper Keepers and erasable pens (my references may be dated), watchmaking students are picking up their loupes and staking tools to get to work. But how do people learn to become watchmakers, clockmakers and watch repairers? What was horological education like in the recent past? Here at the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), our library has advertising pamphlets, syllabi, and textbooks from watchmaking schools ...

Robert Leslie was at the forefront of invention and innovation in 18th-century Philadelphia and was awarded America's first clock and watch patents. However, his contributions were discounted until one of his patented watches was found in 2012 which prompted renewed research. The trail amazingly led to George Washington and the time of his death on December 14, 1799, when his last breath was preserved for eternity on the dial of a colonial-made chamber clock. At the September lecture of the Horological Society of New York, antiquarian horologist Richard Newman will discuss Leslie's legacy as the greatest American clock and watchmaker of the 18th century. ...

MB&F is bringing back what the eponymous brand's founder Max Bsser called "the most beautiful movement we've created to date," and doing so in the package that best shows off that movement, the HM9 Sapphire Vision, or HM9-SV, now in white and yellow gold. They're big, they're bold, they're beautiful, and they're extremely limited. The "case" C as much as you can call it that C is made of an outer hull in three parts, made of sapphire crystal and precious metal, curved and bubbled, and measures 57mm x 47mm x 23mm. The case is sealed both with a patented three-dimensional gasket and and high-tech compound bonding. That gives y...

Last year, Oris announced a plan to reduce the brand's carbon emissions by 10 percent a year for three years, and while it's a bold endeavor, it should come as no surprise. Oris has been working on environmentally-conscious collaborations for a while now, and they're back with another great one, this time with the social enterprise Bracenet. The result: two Aquis Date watches with upcycled dials made of "ghost nets" and other used fishing nets. Back in 2015, Bracenet founders Benjamin Wenke and Madeleine von Hohenthal were diving in Tanzania when they became aware of the tragedy of "ghost nets," the lost, abandoned, or discarded ...

H. Moser has introduced two new watches to its Endeavour collection for Geneva Watch Days 2023: the Endeavour Tourbillon Concept Vantablack and the Endeavour Centre Seconds Vantablack. The pair is a nice extension of Moser's use of the blacker-than-black Vantablack material that it's been using in watches for the last few years, from 2018's Perpetual Moon Concept to last year's gorgeous Streamliner Tourbillon. Like last year's tourbillon, the tourbillon steals the show here too.? Both watches feature a 40mm 5N red gold case and a crown adorned with Moser's "M." The Endeavour Centre Seconds measures 11.2mm thick and has gold hands...

Bulgari is continuing to expand its Octo Finissimo collection, introducing the new "CarbonGold" Automatic and Perpetual Calendar. In a first for the Octo Finissimo, the pair of new releases features a carbon case, topped off with a rose gold crown and carbon dials with matching gold-colored accents. It's just the latest example of Bulgari's willingness to experiment with new materials within its successful Octo Finissimo lineup.? Bulgari introduced its first Carbon Gold watch in 1993, and now it's bringing a carbon case to the Octo Finissimo in both an automatic and perpetual calendar. Both feature an anthracite-colored carbon ca...

Announced in step with Geneva Watch Days, this is the most water-resistant dive watch Oris has ever produced C the AquisPro 4000m. It's a big, bad, blue exercise in excessive engineering, and it combines a handful of Oris's core competencies into one (very) large dive watch.? And by large, I mean super-sized, as the titanium-cased AquisPro 4000m measures 49.5mm wide, 23.4mm thick, and 55mm lug to lug. This is a watch for those with very large wrists or those who love a big watch with a ton of toolish personality. That beefy case and techy construction are met by a light-blue color scheme that keeps this rather s...

Here is the latest from the Girard-Perregaux Laureato, the Absolute Chronograph 8Tech. Announced for Geneva Watch Days 2023, this special carbon-clad chronograph is a further extension of the Laureato Absolute collection, which focuses on modern designs that use special processes and work with advanced materials.? In this case, that means a 44mm Laureato Absolute made from a carbon-titanium composite material that is the result of a manufacturing technique called "Tech8." The process is similar to that of prepreg carbon fiber but includes the introduction of titanium powder. This forms very thin sheets, which are layered together...

At last, we're getting a full look at Rexhep Rexhepi's Chronomtre Antimagntique for Only Watch, the independent watchmaker's contribution to the charitable auction that was merely teased with the initial batch of Only Watch announcements last month. And it was worth the wait. This is the stainless steel Chronomtre Antimagntique, featuring a new hand-finished movement from Akrivia, protected by a Faraday cage. It's a fitting tribute to mid-century antimagnetic watches, but with all the modern touches that make independent watchmaking C and Rexhepi specifically C so captivating. For Only Watch 2023, Rexhepi looked to the scientific, anti-magnetic watches that t...

It's hard to believe it, but summertime is over. The end of August signals the end of the season even if the calendar would like to disagree. But it's not all doom-and-gloom back-to-school and swapping wardrobes for fall just yet. Every year, the tennis world descends upon Queens, NY, for one final gasp of that warm summer feeling by way of the U.S. Open. This year, the folks over at Racquet (the outfit that has done one hell of a job changing the discourse around the sport) along with designer (and friend) Carlton DeWoody and Zurich-based Maurice de Mauriac are delivering their sequel Tennis watch. You might remember last summer's limited edition Rallymaster C a...

As your resident Serpenti stan I am more than happy to run down on the specs, but we all know these watches aren't really about specs; they are precious objects begging to be admired for their good looks, no doubt worn by women who have immaculate taste (wink wink). I'll do my job for the next paragraph and tell you about the teeny tiny mechanical movement that you can now find inside all high jewelry Serpenti. Because it's pretty awesome, and I spend half my life arguing for women's watches to be made with mechanical movements, so I'd better talk when Bulgari delivers. The in-house caliber BVL 100, a...

Whether or not you think we have reached the point of exhaustion, MoonSwatch endures. This has been the year of Moonshine Gold, and August is no different. Every month in 2023, we have seen a different iteration of the MoonSwatch Mission to Moonshine Gold C different in terms of the design choices utilized on the Moonshine Gold chronograph seconds hand. Other than that, every release this year has shared the same Mission to the Moon body. That changes this week. On August 30th, Swatch and Omega are turning to the most coveted of all the MoonSwatch models C the one Daniel Craig wears: Mission to Neptune. Yes, that's right, the blu...

Frederique Constant seems to turn out new calibers like it's going out of style C but with the demand for in-house and manufacture calibers still high, I doubt that will ever be the case. As such, the brand has just announced its 31st caliber, the FC-735, inside a new watch, the Classic Power Reserve Big Date Manufacture. The watch, measuring 40mm by 12.19mm thick in a stainless steel or 18k rose gold case, is powered by a fully crown-set caliber with hours, minutes, seconds, a big date display, moon phase, and a power reserve indicator. The movement also has 50 hours of power reserve, with basic perlage and circular C?tes de Gen...
