Hands-On: Vacheron Constantin's Pice Unique Homage To Peter Paul Rubens
One of the real pleasures of being a part of the watch community is the opportunity to see a watch where you immediately think, "I probably won't ever see that again." Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, we're not allowed to take photos C let alone share those experiences. But thanks to Vacheron Constantin (and the owner of this watch), I get to share a brief look at a pice unique watch that came through the brand's New York flagship recently. This is the Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Homage to Peter Paul Rubens' La lutte pour l'tendard de la Bataille d'Anghiari. This unique watch started back in December of 2020 when Va...
Longines Flagship Heritage Moonphase Review
When reviewing a watch, the correct question to ask isn't exactly "Do I, the reviewer, like this watch?" That's actually a pretty boring, simple, and inherently subjective question. The more interesting and relevant question is something like: "Does this watch successfully accomplish what it sets out to do?" Can this dive watch be used for diving or can this pilot's watch be used by pilots? The question for dressy watches is a little different and driven more by aesthetics, though with function still in mind: questions like the trite "Can this watch slip under a cuff?" become top of mind. The new Longines Flagship Heritage is quic...
Bulova is back with another release and again it dives into its archives. When we last left the brand, we were talking about a Sinatra-inspired watch pulling from the 1950s and '60s designs. Now we move on to the groovy '70s, a time when watch brands were pivoting in a big way to outlandish, home-run-swing-type timepieces to keep up with the innovation (read: Quartz Revolution) coming out of Japan. In the case of Bulova, that manifested itself in the Jetstar, cased in what the brand refers to as a "turtle" style body with colors and accents that could've only been conceived in that decade. In 2023, the brand is honoring the Jetstar of 1973. Fifty years later and ...

There is nothing quite like being around an amped Jean-Claude Biver, at his home on a gently sloping hillside overlooking Lake Geneva, as he workshops a new ad slogan for TAG Heuer at decibels akin to a Who concert in 1976. ("Don't Crack Under Pressure" would debut a few months later.) In another context, you'd cross the street to avoid this man. But this is the eminent Jean-Claude Biver, the one-of-kind industry titan who has seen it all in his roles at the likes of Omega, Blancpain, Zenith, TAG Heuer, and Hublot. And you are here to film an episode of a fledgling video series called Talking Watches. He forgot you were coming and is ...
Tissot Sideral Regatta Timer Watch Video Review: Hands-On
The closest I've ever been to being on a sailboat, yacht, or even rowing a boat is at my local gym using a row machine to burn off all of my excess fast food calories from throughout the week. So, if I'm not a boat person, why would I even like a watch with a regatta timer that's specifically meant to time the start of said boating activities? Well, if they're as fun and colorful as the Tissot Sideral, then, why not? The new Sideral I handled is actually a modern iteration of Tissot's original 1971 Sideral S, which was a fo...
The Vintage Watch On The 'Barbie' Pink Carpet
If you don't know what Barbenheimer is, let me get you up to speed: It's quite literally a portmanteau of two highly anticipated summer movies: Barbie and Oppenheimer. It has since become a phenomenon, as it was created to represent the potential of seeing both films as a double feature. As it turns out, thousands of people indeed bought tickets for this express purpose. And now that both films have hit sold-out cinemas everywhere, it seems like the perfect time to highlight a very cool watch moment that occurred on the promotional tour for the movie Barbie late last month. The film itself is directed by Greta Gerwig, and stars Margot Robbie as the titular Barbie...
Hands On with Nivada Grenchen's Tropical Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver
"A man who lives a placid, unvarying life doesn't need a Nivada Chronomaster." Nivada Grenchen chose one of the most eloquent ways you could call someone boring with their first advertisements of what would become one of their most iconic watches. Back in 2020, the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver (CASD for short) was one of the brand's core pieces as the brand re-launched itself in the modern landscape while reaching back into a deep archive of great watches that were eventual victims of the quartz crisis. There's been a number of variations of Nivada chronograph reissues since then C Chronoking, Broad Arrow, Lollipop, Orange Boy, Big-...
Hands-On: The Timex World Time
Not every watch we write about has to be high horology, after all. At $179 for a quartz watch, you know exactly where you stand with the Timex World Time. It's a watch that leans heavily on design rather than complexity and that unique throwback of design language is what garnered a lot of attention at Hodinkee out of the gate. The 39mm by 12mm barrel case (with 41.5mm lug-to-lug) has a very recognizably throwback vibe befitting of a watch that was inspired by a vintage Timex Model 42 electric (made all the way back to 1969, according to my research). You generally wouldn't see anything quite like this today and with my love of a...
The Watches Of Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' Movie
A new film by Christopher Nolan is, more often than not, an event unto itself. His films always deliver for those of us who love the intersection of horology and cinema. In 2014, it was Interstellar and the Murph watch. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Nolan unleashed Tenet C and with it, a digital prop watch that re-imagined how time could be told. The one thing both watches have in common is that they come from the brand Hamilton C a company known for its involvement in the movie industry. The watches of Tenet and Interstellar were also conceived specifically for these Nolan films, which makes the association less of product placement and more a continuation of a certain filmmaking ...
The New Nomos Ahoi 38mm Review
Nomos' version of a dive watch, the Ahoi Neomatik, is back in a smaller case size: 38mm (okay, well 38.5mm). To launch the new model, the brand has come up with two soft and summery dial colors C Sky Blue and Sand. I don't know what beach they grabbed these colors from, but I want to go there. It's not a true ISO-certified dive watch (no dive bezel, after all), but the little whale above the sapphire caseback right next to the rating tells you this watch has 200 meters of water resistance. That's pretty cool. But what's inside the case is Nomos' big pride on this release. The DUW 6101 caliber powering...
What This Vintage Cartier Tank Cintre Tells Us About The Future Of Restoration
From 1920 until 1960, Cartier produced less than 15,000 wristwatches. For perspective, it's estimated Rolex produced its one-millionth watch sometime around 1960 after being founded in 1905; best estimates put Patek production at around 500,000 over the same period. So vintage Cartier watches are rare. Really rare. I bring this up because during this spring auction season, we mentioned that it was a bit of an off-season for Cartier, without many of its vintage watches for sale. There was one notable exception: this 1920s platinum Tank Cintre. In our auction preview, I wrote that this Cintre just didn't do it for me in person. As proof that the market very much ...
The Watches Of Ryan Gosling In 'Barbie'
The weekend of "Barbenheimer" is coming to a close. We kicked things off with part one of our Watching Movies double feature: Oppenheimer, and now we present a special nonCFriday edition of WM with Greta Gerwig's Barbie. It's an absolute cultural phenomenon of a film that has filled cities and cinemas with moviegoers decked out in all pink everything. I'll admit, when I saw the movie Friday night, I put on a watch that is as close to pink as possible, my MoonSwatch Mission to Pluto. You have to lean into the fun a little. Barbie is a film we've known about for a while now, ever since the casting of Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken was announced bac...
To be a watch writer or really a writer about most subcultures is to have an opinion about nostalgia. Jordan vs. LeBron; Sean Connery's vs. Daniel Craig's James Bond; Zeppelin vs. Nirvana; vintage GMT-Master ref. 1675 or modern ref. 126710. These arguments are as much about the eras they represent as they are about their actual subjects; equally prevalent is the impact of the past on the present. Over the past decade or so, the watch industry has gone crazy for retro, reissues, and anything "heritage-inspired." Tudor and its Heritage Chronograph and Black Bay from the early 2010s often get credit for starting a trend that pretty much every brand has followed sinc...
The Massena LAB x Revolution Uni-Racer 1949 Review
Massena Lab and Revolution have teamed up for a real deep-cut release for folks in the know and it's an eye-catching reference to one of the best chronographs ever made. Based on the same platform as Massena LAB's other Uni-Racer models, the watch is a 39mm wide and 13mm high manually-wound chronograph powered by a Sellita Caliber SW510 Elabor movement. That movement, with nine o'clock running seconds and a 30-minute totalizer at three o'clock, runs at 4Hz with 58 hours of power reserve and is cased in stainless steel with 50m of water resistance. That "deep-cut" reference I mentioned is all in the d...
Over the past couple of years, the marketplace for GMT watches has evolved rapidly thanks to the addition of a handful of new movements hitting the scene. The most compelling of these new movements, at least for the frequent flyers among us, is Miyota's 9075, an automatic mechanical movement with local jumping GMT functionality. Pushing a once-premium travel complication into a decidedly more accessible price point than was previously available, the new Lorier Hydra SIII employs Miyota's movement with mid-century style and a price that's not just competitive C it's a bit hard to believe. Lorier is a small brand based in NYC opera...
Possible Tornado Hits La Chaux-de-Fonds, Causing Significant Damage To The Area
A massive storm ripped through the Neuchatel Mountains on Monday, July 24, 2023, leaving massive damage in its wake in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The storm, which hit the region at 11:30 am local time, resulted in the fatality of a construction worker as a crane fell in the winds which exceeded 135 mph. According to police sources, police and over 80 firefighters responded to calls for what was deemed a "probable tornado" by the local weather service, with massive damage to homes and what is now reported as at least 40 injuries. That damage also had a major impact on the Sellita movement factory and its team. "The entire roof of a neighboring...
