A Night With Panerai And Hodinkee
Panerai has a lot to celebrate this year, so we gathered together for an Italian aperitivo and conversation to discuss Panerai's history and unparalleled design evolution with Ben Clymer and Philippe Bonay C Brand President at Panerai.Hosted at their new Madison Avenue boutique, their largest in the world, Panerai offered our community of watch enthusiasts and collectors an unparalleled experience where Swiss watchmaking meets the Italian spirit. Tray-passed hors d'oeuvres and Italian cocktails were served as the Hodinkee Community mingled and interacted with an extensive collection of Panerai watches, both historical and contemporary. ...
Each week, we present a selection of our favorite watches from the pre-owned side of our collection. Captured by our talented in-house photographers, you get a closer look at what makes these watches so special. This week, we have an example of the legendary 1016 Rolex Explorer, an elegant chronograph from Breguet, proof that the Santos was made to be two-tone, a mint green Breitling Chronomat, and a ladder bracelet Zenith Defy. Go Anywhere, Do Anything C Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016 Starting production in 1960, seven years after the first Explorer, the 1016 would be in production for 29 years. This longevity has m...
Just a little over two weeks ago now, we were first introduced to the Timex x seconde/seconde/ 'iykyk' collaborative collection: a pair of limited edition watches that gave some of Timex's most popular heritage models the good ol' Romaric Andr remix with graphic seconds hands and strategically-colored bezels referencing the most well-known nicknames in the watch world. We had a hunch that the fun would stop there, and now the duo has released a sequel in the form of two new 'iykyk' "episodes." Since this is coming right on the heels of our original article on the 'iykyk' collaboration, in an effort to resist redundancy, I'm going to keep it moving and get into t...
Introducing: The World's Lightest Watch, The Ming LW.01
Ming Thein's eponymous brand seems to have broken a record today with the announcement of the new Ming LW.01 series from their "Special Projects Cave." At a "head-only" weight of 8.8 grams for the manually-wound version and 10.8 grams for the automatic, Ming says they believe they "are the world's lightest mechanical wristwatches." It's a good hedge against potential incomplete information of the kind of technical boundaries that are being pushed and broken worldwide, but based on my research, I think they're right to be confident in their claims. We'll get to the competition in a minute, but first, the watch itself. The LW.01M a...
Reading Time at HSNY: Veteran Watchmakers at the Bulova School
This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written by HSNY's librarian, Miranda Marraccini.Image above: an assortment of Bulova materials at HSNY's Jost Brgi Research Library. I promised in my previous article about watchmaking schools to highlight the Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking, an institution that plays an outsize role in the history of American watchmaking, and also in our archive at the Horological Society of New York. In honor of Veterans Day, I've decided to explore the school's mission, impact on disability rights, and contribution to watchmaking. Bulova, the company, wasn't the first to consider watchmaking...
Introducing: The Ceramic-Cased Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT 'Dark Grey'
Hot off the presses from Biel, Switzerland, this is Omega's latest high-tech dive watch, the Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial Master Chronometer GMT "Dark Grey." Its naming comes from this specific model's use of a dark grey ceramic case that promotes ceramic's known ability to manage wear and tear while also being quite a bit lighter than a standard steel example of the same model.? Being somewhat more specific, the case is made from silicon nitride ceramic (Si3N4), and though this has a pronounced effect on the weight of the watch (which is only 107 grams without the strap), Omega has selected its full-size diver for the ceramic trea...
Introducing: Drake's For Hodinkee Fall/Winter 2023
Drake's For Hodinkee All the way back in 2012, when the Hodinkee Shop was first getting off its feet, we teamed up with Drake's to create one of our very first collaborative limited editions C a pair of ties inspired by two of our favorite vintage Submariners (reference 5512 and the no crown-guard reference 5508 to be precise). A lot has changed at both Hodinkee and Drake's since our first collaboration. While Drake's is still renowned for its handmade ties, neckwear, and accessories, it has also applied its penchant for fine materials and signature relaxed elegance to the larger world of fine menswear, launching a collection of high-quality staples from outerwea...
Vintage Watches: The Golden Age Of Boucheron Wristwatches
Almost exactly a year ago, I came across an Instagram post from my friend Kevin O'Dell (or @theydid). Kevin has a unique taste in watches, focusing mainly on vintage (of course) and particularly smaller watches from brands that certainly don't fall into the "hype" bucket. You'll find a few Rolex on his feed yet not Submariners or GMTs. The watch he posted on November 11th, 2022 was new to me. A simple, square-shaped yellow gold watch with Clous de Paris finishing. I scrolled to the next photo in the carousel and my jaw dropped. Hand engraved on the caseback in a font I immediately fell for was "Boucheron Paris" C I was hooked and needed to know more. ...
How To Wear It The Chopard Alpine Eagle
Welcome to "How To Wear It," where our Style Editor Malaika Crawford takes one beloved watch and shows you how to make it look its best C with styling tips and tricks, a delve into the current fashion discourse, some historical references, and a dash of British sarcasm thrown in for good measure. On Sundays I like to flick through absolutely every single style section article in The New York Times, The Washington Post and anything her fashion majesty Cathy Horyn has written for The Cut. Then I read half a dozen substacks because I absolutely must know what the fashion literati deem au courant. And, because, sometimes a gal needs a break from watches. ...
Introducing the Oris Divers Seventy-Five With Collective Horology
Collective Horology is on a tear right now, coming off the release of the Minerva monopusher chronograph with Montblanc. Today we have another new throwback, this time to the 1970s, with Oris. The framework is the same 40mm by 12.8mm stainless steel case as the other Oris Divers Sixty-Five watches (or at least the ones with the Caliber 400 movement). This time, the watch fast-forwards to 1975 with bronze accents and a colorway straight out of the loudest 1970s kitchen you could ever imagine. The watch features a bronze unidirectional dive bezel, bronze center links on the bracelet, and bronze hands with yellow lume that match the...
Introducing: The Zenith Chronomaster Sport Aaron Rodgers Limited Edition
Seventeen years is a long time to be at the top of your game C ask NFL quarterback and four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. How about 158 years? That's a question for Zenith. Now, the two have teamed up for the new Chronomaster Sport Aaron Rodgers Edition, available starting November 2. I remember it like it was yesterday. ?All the way back in 2015, the Green Bay Packers were playing the Detroit Lions C in Detroit, mind you C with no time left on the clock (literally) and down by two points. As Aaron Rodgers took the snap at the opponents 39 yard line and heaved the ball through the air, the commentator said, "He turned 32 yesterday, do...
OMEGA Speedmaster Reduced Ref. 3510.61.00 Formula 1 has seen huge growth in the US market over the past few years and has made household names out of drivers like Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. But, for those who have been longtime fans, any conversation about the best drivers of all time will include a chat about Michael Schumacher. In his era, he was the Michael Jordan of Formula 1, and Schumacher won most of his seven world championship titles while driving for the legendary Scuderia Ferrari. Released in 1996, the same year Schumacher joined the Ferrari Marl...
Hands-On: The Second Generation Of The Bremont Supermarine S302 GMT
When you grab a watch, what do you want it to do (besides keep the time of course)? Are you the kind of person that's looking for a generalist watch, something all-purpose that can mostly get the work done in any circumstance? Or do you like a specialist, a watch that knows what it is and does it to a "T"? My daily-wear watch is a GMT but I've never quite concerned myself with watches that try to do everything. The GMT-Master II has 100m of water-resistance which is plenty if you're going to take a dip in the water. If you're going diving, you're pretty much guaranteed to be reaching for a dive watch (or dive computer, more likel...
Urban Jurgensen Exhibition With Timepieces From the Helmut Crott Collection
I've never liked the phrase "if you know you know." Whether or not intentional, it often feels like its use has the intent of making those who don't "know" feel excluded. This year is the 250th anniversary of Urban Jrgensen's founding, and for those who might not know much about the modern Urban Jrgensen brand (or the original Dane watchmaker who lent the brand his name), it's never a better time to learn. Alongside its Geneva Watch Auction: XVIII this week, Phillips is presenting a special exhibition celebrating 250 years of Jrgensen, featuring timepieces from the collection of Dr. Helmut Crott. The collection of more than 25 watches is on display at La Rserve outside Geneva from Novemb...
Introducing The New 2023 Breitling Avenger Collection
Breitling has introduced an updated Avenger collection of pilot-inspired watches. Dating to the early 2000s, the Avenger collection has been scaled down and simplifed to make for a sleek update. The collection includes the Automatic 42, GMT 44, and the B01 Chronograph 44 C the chronograph uses Breitling's manufacture caliber 01. Avenget B01 Chronograph While the new collection maintains the aviation inspiration and rugged profile of the Avenger, the updates align the Avenger with other updates we've seen across Breitling's catalog.Younger than many of Breitling's other collections, the Avenger is a bit of a modern mash-up of e...
Review of the MB&F Horological Machine 11 "Architect"
There's something poetic about MB&F's choice to launch the HM11 "Architect" the day before Dubai Watch Week in a country Bsser has called home since 2014. It is, paradoxically, a watch that seems furthest from home of Bssers recent Horological Machine designs which have become (and I hate to say this) often predictably automotive. But this is, as the brand has told me, "a home for the wrist." No, that's not a commentary on the typically enormous size of any MB&F watch, though here, measuring a relatively small 42mm wide by (still pretty hefty) 23mm thick. It's not even a jab at the cost of the HM-11, a cool $230,000. Most of MB&F's Horological Mach...
Letter From The Editor: Introducing Hodinkee Magazine Volume 12
It's hard to begin to describe what it's like to put together an issue of Hodinkee Magazine. It's one of those special things that we create here; one that happens in the shadows alongside the daily grind of publishing on our digital platforms. We are delivering world-class online content day in and day out, all the while toiling away on one massive print edition. I've always loved the idea that our issues, our volumes, are timeless C with stories as fresh today as they'll be decades from now when someone pulls them from a dusty bookshelf. In Volume 12, we have reached midnight... or is it midday? The point is that the number 12 is si...
Review of the Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto
Over a month ago, I covered the announcement of the limited edition Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto 40. The watch was an homage to the Porsche 935 Turbo No. 40 that Ferrier himself (and his friends Fran?ois Servanin and Fran?ois Trisconi) drove in the 1979 24 Hour of Le Mans. The team placed third overall and won second place in Group V, and Fran?ois Servanin (founder and President of Laurent Ferrier) was named the best French driver of the competition. It was an interesting narrative for what essentially was a bold color that complimented that vintage Porsche. But in the article, I mentioned that I rarely see Laurent Ferrier watches in person. So the brand offered me a spin C ?not in a Porsche 9...

Playing 'Fantasy Watches' Ahead Of The 2023 Geneva Fall Auctions
Geneva fall auction season is upon us. Which can only mean one thing: The need to put on a fake fantasy watch league between colleagues. Two Hodinkee co-workers decide whether beauty or brains take precedence when it comes to high-ticket auction lot shopping. A bit of healthy competition never hurt anybody. Will it be a compromise between looks and intellect? Or will it be all out warfare?Hedge your bets as Style Editor Malaika Crawford and Vintage Expert Rich Fordon battle it out in an old fashioned chin-wag.
