Bottom Time: The Important Lessons Ive Learned While Diving With Over 200 Watches
I first crawled onto a shipwreck when I was 20 years old. I wasn't a diver yet, but it was the most daring adventure I'd ever undertaken. The wreck, the 260-foot freighter Francisco Morazan, was half submerged, lying about 300 yards offshore from the uninhabited South Manitou Island in Lake Michigan. To get there, you have to catch a ferry from the mainland, then hike a couple of miles across the island, descend a steep slope to the beach, and then swim. I was not a confident swimmer back then, and the water was icy cold. My friend, Chris, and I paddled out to the wreck, and the rusted carcass loomed above us, twisted steel evidence of her violent demise in 1960 when she ran aground in a sto...
MoonSwatch 'Mission On Earth' Review
If you thought Omega and Swatch were out of tricks to come up with new variations of the MoonSwatch, well, all I can say is you don't know MoonSwatch. The two brands just dropped three new collaborative releases today, and unlike the year full of "Full Moon" subtle variants and two Snoopy-inspired releases, these are Earth-inspired and pretty damn creative.? Above, you'll see the "Mission on Earth C Polar Lights" variation with a turquoise (well, very green-ish turquoise) case and handset and a dial studded with little "stars" of tiny silver-colored flakes inspired by aventurine glass dials. Below you'll also see the "Mission on ...

Sylvester Stallone's Patek Phillippe Grandmaster Chime sold for $5.4 million at Sotheby's last week, a healthy couple million bucks above its retail price.?At least a few people expressed consternation about Stallone selling the watch just three years after acquiring it, one of whom was Patek CEO Thierry Stern. "Of course, we do not like it, but it can happen," he said to WatchPro regarding Stallone's 6300G. "I cannot control everybody. It is not fair for a client who may have been waiting for this piece for many years and then sees it being sold." Stallone's Grandmaster Chime sold for $5.4 million at Sotheby's NY. ...
Introducing: Longines Expands Its Conquest Collection With New Sizes And Summer-Ready Colors
The Longines Conquest line celebrates its 70th birthday this year, and in honor of that milestone, the brand has announced the release of several new expansions on the model family. Debuting earlier this week, a trio of pastel-clad 34mm join the fold, as well as two completely new 34mm and 38mm sizes in several color options that speak to Conquest's contemporary identity and the brand's willingness to expand its reach to new audiences while leaning on its heritage roots. For the latest additions to the 34mm Conquest model that launched back in the Spring of 2023, the most significant changes to note are the trio of new dial optio...
This Week In The Shop: Six Summer-Ready Watches From Zodiac
Your Weekly Shop Brief Last week, we received all four models within Unimatic's Classic collection paired with stainless steel bracelets that were previously only available separately. Additionally, there are two new Zodiac models we've just added to the shop today, which may or may not be somewhere in the roundup below (they definitely are).? Six Summer-Ready Watches From Zodiac Summertime and Zodiac watches go together like a pi?a colada and an afternoon on the beach. The argument that Zodiac's extensive and colorful collection of divers makes for the ultimate summer watch is already something of a cliche. But a...
In-Depth: Herms 'The Cut,' A Forecast For Expansion
Earlier this year at Watches & Wonders, Herms released a new line of 36mm sports watches powered by mechanical movements, aimed primarily at women. The Herms Cut is smaller, rounder, and softer than the "men's" Herms H08. My initial read: a simple, clean, easy-to-digest (and commercially viable) watch that proves the brand's intention to keep marching full speed ahead with growth of the category. Herms' watches have been a staple amongst fashion enthusiasts and bourgeois consumers since the Jean-Louis Dumas reinvention of Herms in the 1970s. Signature models like the Arceau and Cape Cod have peaked and troughed in wider mass-market popularity, yet they h...

This morning, The New Yorker published the latest report on the status of John Lennon's long-lost, seemingly found, once stolen, and possibly recovered Patek Philippe 2499. If the basics of this long-developing story sound familiar, that's because we've covered the topic at some length in the past (here, and here, for example). For this most recent story, our pal (and past Hodinkee contributor) Jay Fielden digs even deeper into this special watch mystery and finds some new details and archival images.? Famously, the Patek 2499 was a gift from Yoko Ono, and even without the provenance, an example of 2499 is very collectible, coming from the mid-century and being p...
Introducing The Oris Divers Sixty-Five With Cal. 400
Oris has introduced a Divers Sixty-Five that shines on the spec sheet. For the first time in the core collection, Oris is putting its in-house Caliber 400 into a 38mm Divers Sixty-Five with no date.?Revealed in 2020, the Oris Caliber 400 is the Holstein brand's own movement with a five-day power reserve (thanks to its twin mainsprings, silicon hairspring, and tons of other technical innovations). In 2021, Oris and Hodinkee brought the caliber 400 to the 38mm Divers Sixty-Five for the pair's second-ever limited edition. Now, a 38mm Divers Sixty-Five joins the core collection. It features a sunburst, gradient green dial, and matchi...

If you're looking for a chuckle C or maybe even some hope that you'll find something you misplaced long ago C maybe this story from the BBC will give you one or both. Farmer James Steele, 95, of Oswestry, Shropshire (which I have verified are real places in England), was tending to his dairy cows with a vet in 1974 when one of his curious bovine workers got a little hungry for a taste of his Rolex. Steele looked for that watch for a while but had long since moooooved on (sorry, I had to), buying himself a new watch and giving up any hope of seeing his original timepiece. Introducing The Noah x Timex Sun and Moon Watch
NYC-based menswear brand Noah has launched an Art Deco style day-night watch with Timex. Gold-toned and very vintage-inspired, it's a little quartz-powered riff on a classic Tank-style dress watch, and it costs a very humble $198. The gold-plated, stainless-steel case measures 37mm x 25mm, which, for scale, means it is slightly larger than both the largest model Tank Must and LC. The stepped case is a little chunky; there's certainly a lot more heft to it than a Cartier Tank. But chunky works here. The watch isn't supposed to be dainty; it's a re-contextualization of a classic look, but with modern dimensions. The white dial feat...
Photo Report: Pitti Uomo Summer 2024
Summer has arrived, and with it, the 106th edition of Pitti Uomo, the bi-annual men's fashion trade show in Florence. With sleeves rolled up in the Tuscan heat, there was no shortage of amazing watches as the 15,000 or so attendees took to the street and enjoyed the event's reputation as a Mecca of men's style. More than any previous edition, this season marked a sharp change in tastes, with exotic, often bespoke leather straps replacing tried-and-true NATOS and a mix of Genta-inspired designs and Tank cases proving the popular format for watches. At Pitti Uomo, vintage Rolex has kept the crown for decades, and for the first time, new models (particularly the lat...
Introducing: The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra With A Lacquer-Finished Black Dial
Omega has just announced a few new models for their Aqua Terra lineup today, and while they might not be earth-shattering, they do round out the collection with a classic charm. In 41mm, 38mm, and 34mm stainless steel cases, the new Seamaster Aqua Terra comes with a black varnished dial with a lacquer finish, changing it up from the horizontal "teak" pattern that normally forms an Aqua Terra dial. In terms of thickness, the new watches are 13.4mm, 12.3mm, or 12mm, respectively, with 20mm, 19mm, and 16mm lug widths. All models also come with 150m of water resistance. Each watch features an arrow minute hand and a more traditional ...
Introducing: The Ressence Type 5 L Diver With Luminous Dial (Live Pics)
Today, Ressence has released a new version of their Type 5 C the Type 5 L C and it's bold, bright, and extra eye-catching. But you'd be a bit surprised to hear that if you hadn't seen the image above and instead just saw the wrist shot below. Well, you'd also be excused for not realizing it C but that's kind of the point. The new Type 5 L looks straightforward, solid, and like a quintessential Ressence in grey, but it has a hidden secret: a lot of lume.? Close up, you can see the two main tones of grey on the dial. Powered by the automatic-winding ROCS 5 (Ressence Orbital Convex System) module driven by the minute axle of a custo...
