There's an adage in watch collecting: "Everyone should own a Speedmaster." I took that to heart early in my watch journey. I thought that if owning a Speedmaster was a prerequisite to being a "watch guy," I should also be able to identify every vintage Speedmaster reference at a glance. I studied everything C lug shape, dot over 90 bezels, fonts, engravings, text, dials C and promptly forgot it all about a week later. I got burned out before I even bought a Speedmaster. I moved on. Ever since I've never seriously considered buying a Speedmaster C until recently, when two options started calling to me.? The first option was the new "Ed White" C a straight-lugged r...

Last night Usher added to the now quite sizable list of men in small (to medium) watches from the '70s on the red carpet. Sporting an 18k yellow gold vintage manual-winding Piaget with diamond pav dial and basket weave bracelet, Usher has (un)officially ingratiated himself into a trend that has slowly taken over the world-wide-watch web. But let's remember that, for the laymen at home, who aren't perusing images of Cartier London and Patek stone dials on Instagram in their free time, seeing a vintage gold watch rather than a sportier Rolex or AP will make for a refreshing change. "Made in China" is as loaded a phrase as any, but just as important as where the Pastorale II is made is who made it: independent watchmaker Qin Gan.?Qin is a 55-year-old watchmaker based in Chongqing, the largest municipal area in China. After making his international debut with the Pastorale in 2021, Qin has refined the design, upgraded the movement finishing, and added a gold case. The result is the Pastorale II, an elegant dress watch that, in terms of craftsmanship, makes a statement about what independent watchmaking in China can be. Pastorale II in white and rose gold. Qin's father owned a watch and clock repair shop in...

Quartz technology was largely responsible for the aesthetic evolution of horology in the '70s. It created a design action/reaction from Swiss haute horlogerie giants, including Patek Philippe, who, in the face of new technology, had no choice but to get experimental. It was also the starting point of what Hodinkee alum Joe Thompson has previously called "The Fashion Watch Revolution." In the decade that followed the introduction of battery-operated watches, a vast segment of production focused less on the core timekeeping function and more on the outward appearance, evolving into fashion accessories that just so happened to tell the time. This Japanese-imported t...

While it's not like the demand for integrated bracelet steel sports watches has completely gone away, we're well past the hype days. Some models saw a bump from being kind of like the watches people really wanted, and that bump seems to have died off quickly. But the Streamliner endures. Well, it endures and then often does something like this and exceeds expectations. This is the new H. Moser & Cie. Streamliner Concept Minute Repeater Tourbillon Blue Enamel. There are many reasons for the longevity of the Streamliner. One of them is certainly the fact that it doesn't look like a knock-off of any other integrated bracelet des...

My watch friends know that whenever someone suggests that I should try wearing a large watch, I have a viscerally negative reaction. Why should I wear large, ungainly watches just because I'm 6'7"? What I realized they were saying was, "You should wear this watch because I wish I could pull this off, but I can't." Fair enough, but it's not a distinguishment I asked for or generally want. Well, this is one time I can say, "I can pull this off, but you probably can't." And man, am I happy I can. This is one of the rarest birds in Audemars Piguet's catalog, something that the brand only trots out in limited edition runs: a Royal Oak...

More than three years after the launch of the original Black Bay Ceramic, Tudor has announced a follow-up version that is less of a reveal and more of a release C as we've all seen this watch. It's the new Black Bay Ceramic "Blue" (yes, those are brand quotes), and it's the first production model born from Tudor's relationship with the Visa Cash App Red Bull Formula 1 team (aka. VCARB), and it's the same watch that the driver's for that team have been wearing since Tudor became one of the team's sponsor. Now you can wear it too.? From a direct product viewpoint, this is a pretty easy watch to digest. It's a Black Bay Ceramic with...

Baby G has launched a compact BGD-565 in three jelly colors: blue, yellow, and pink. The Jelly Summer watch takes the first generation of the 1994 Baby-G, the BGD565, makes it Y2K, and releases it for kids in 2024. Of course, it also works for adults like myself who love translucent pastel anything. The watches are each made of resin, measure a wrist-friendly size of ?42.1 37.9 11.3 mm (L x W x H), and are 100 meters water-resistant. Baby-G was launched in the early '90s as G-Shock's answer to watches for women. The new line of watches still carried the important water and shock-resistant specs of a G-Shock?but often with a s...

For one reason or another, we've mostly decided that a modern dive watch should look a certain way, namely, featuring an external bezel. But it wasn't always this way, and the latest 39mm Longines Legend Diver makes a case that it doesn't need to be this way today. In 1959, Longines introduced the Super Compressor Diver ref. 7042. Like other dive watches of the era from brands like Universal Geneve, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and too many others that were lost to the sands of time, it used a "super compressor" case from Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA). The case is defined by its internal rotating bezel and dual crowns, but it...

There are plenty of automotive-inspired watches and watch brands that partner with car companies. However, few carry more bona fide automotive AND horological credibility than the one with the most storied of automotive names: Porsche Design. Porsche Design watches go beyond a mere co-branding exercise and instead carry the design DNA and philosophy of the company's founder, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. There is no arguing that over its 40 year history, it has produced some revolutionary, collectible, and important watches. The Porsche Design Chronograph I (1972) To understand Porsche Design watches, you must, as with so many ...

Baltic has brought back a not-so-old classic with the new MR Roulette. "MR" stands for "micro-rotor," and the watch shares a lot with Baltic's super-successful MR-01 (their first Calatrava-style micro-rotor release). The stainless-steel case is still 36mm by 9.8mm (with 44mm lug-to-lug), with vertically brushed bezel and drilled lug holes. Inside is a Hangzhou CAL5000a micro-rotor movement with 42 hours of power reserve. The difference is in the dials and hands, but it adds a fresh and sportier look to the lineup. These aren't exactly a new design for Baltic. They previously...

Last year was a banner year for Zenith's Defy Skyline lineup. In January, we got a new Defy Skyline Skeleton, with an openworked blue or black dial (and semi-skeletonized movement) in a stainless steel case. Eventually, we got that new skeletonized form in a black ceramic case with an interchangeable bracelet. Knowing Zenith's design roadmap, you might have guessed this new release was coming, but the new white ceramic Defy Skyline Skeleton is a looker. The white ceramic case measures 41mm and 12.2mm thick with an interchangeable white strap included. The stark white is offset by a blue-toned openworked dial to show that semi-ske...

St. Louis-based Monta's latest release is the Noble Voyager, an extension of an existing collection that adds a GMT complication. The Noble Voyager adds a GMT while managing to maintain the elegant look and compact dimensions that have made the Noble a mainstay in its collection.? The Noble Voyager adds a "caller" GMT with an independently-adjustable 24-hour hand. The hand is skeletonized and tipped with Super-LumiNova and shows an additional timezone along with the 24-hour scale on the outer edge of the dial. The polished markers and hands also have Super-LumiNova, and the date window sits at 6 o'clock. Monta is offering the Nob...

It's a big day for ana/digi fans out there C aka me and my friends C as the Canadian brand Momentum has just announced a modern take on the cult classic Chronosport UDT. But, for those that don't know and love the Chronosport ...

This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written by HSNY's librarian, Miranda Marraccini. Will you be watching the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games starting in Paris next month? I've always been an Olympics super-fan, though I'm not sure why. Something about the international display of camaraderie, or perhaps the way the games inspire rabid excitement about sports most people don't pay any attention to in the intervening two yearsCcurling, trampolining, handball, and more. I've often found myself standing up in front of the screen at home, fists clenched, screaming as if my life depended on the outcome of a canoe slalom race. ...
