Review of The Daniel Roth Tourbillon in Rose Gold
The revived Daniel Roth is introducing the next version of its Tourbillon, now in rose gold. Fresh off last year's Tourbillon Souscription, a few updates in line with the historical evolution of the tourbillon have been made, but this year's edition is largely similar, just with a rose gold case and dial.? The Tourbillon is inspired by the original Daniel Roth Tourbillon C187, designed by the master watchmaker to put the tourbillon on full display on the dial side. The rose gold dial features a guilloch en ligne, compared to the Clous de Paris on last year's Souscription (essentially straight-line guilloch). Similarly, the cali...

Introducing: The Alpina Heritage Automatic
For Geneva Watch Days 2024, Alpina Watches has announced a handful of new models, but one specific new line caught our eye C the Heritage Automatic. Following the development and eventual launch of the Alpiner Heritage Carre and the Seastrong Heritage, Alpina is back again with a pair of steel field watches that capture a range of inspiration from popular designs from the '20s, '30s, and '40s. Offered in the two versions shown above, the Heritage Automatic line is differentiated only by dial treatment as both SKUs have 38mm steel cases that are 10.15mm thick (Alpina does not quote a lug-to-lug measurement, but all of the availab...

Introducing: The Refreshed Oris Aquis Chronograph
When in the market for a serious dive watch at a seriously attractive price, the Oris Aquis always comes up in conversation. Continuously producing fans (fanatics in the true sense of the word) and various iterations on a theme, today, the Aquis family welcomes a redesigned chronograph. New for Geneva Watch Days 2024, the Oris Aquis Chronograph offers tweaks that should hit the right notes for both the most ardent collectors of the brand and the greater watch community. While the Divers Sixty-Five collection plays the hits with vintage-inspired aesthetics, the Aquis line has always served as Oris's modern tool watch. But the real...
Introducing: Grand Seiko Caliber 9R 20th Anniversary Limited Editions (Live Pics)
Last night, Grand Seiko announced two new limited editions in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their Caliber 9R Spring Drive movement. This milestone celebrates one of Grand Seiko's biggest contributions to watchmaking C the concept of a hybrid movement that utilizes mechanical power from a traditional mainspring, combined with electronic and electromagnetic components, to create a movement greater than the sum of its parts. Long famed for its precision of plus or minus one second per day, the Caliber 9R series has cemented itself in the Grand Seiko story. Over the past 20 years, Grand Seiko has taken this concept and churned out an impressive number of caliber variations as well as mo...
Hands-On: Biver Returns With The New 'Automatique' And A Proprietary Micro-Rotor Movement
Last year, Jean-Claude Biver and his son Pierre Biver surprised the watch world with the first release from their new brand, the eponymous "Biver." The brand itself was of little surprise C JCB (as he's referred to in the watch world, even by Pierre) had teased the news back in February 2022. But the $550,000 base price Carillon Tourbillon made in the traditional tablissage style C outsourcing components and assembling and finishing them centrally C shocked a lot of people.? Two gem-set Carillon Tourbillon pice unique watches from Biver, each with a price tag of around CHF 1,300,000. One has already sold. Less than half a ye...

With Geneva Watch Days kicking off tomorrow, Tudor has taken the opportunity to launch a new iteration of the Black Bay Chrono. This time, it's a boutique edition with a richly blue dial and bezel.? The bezel is fixed with an aluminum insert, the water resistance is 200 meters, and the "Blue Boutique" comes fitted to a steel five-link bracelet with T-Fit.? Inside we find the same MT ...
Introducing: A Trio Of Chiming Watches From Bulgari C Each More Complicated Than The Next
Today, Bulgari announces three new chiming watches. Not new, but re-invented. The first of the trio, and the least complicated (though by no means simple), is the resurrection of the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater in full carbon. Those who have been reading this site long enough will be keen to remember that Bulgari turned heads back in 2018 with its first iteration C breaking records for being the thinnest minute repeater ever made. However, that watch was a limited edition of 50 pieces, so Bulgari has brought back the record-breaking watch in a very similar new edition. To the naked eye, most of the elements are identical to the original watch C a carbon dial w...
Introducing: The Doxa Sub 300T Professional Aristera Limited Edition
Southpaw Doxa nerds unite! As part of the brand's Geneva Watch Days plan, they have just announced the first-ever lefty Doxa, the Sub 300 Professional Aristera. This new model is limited to just 300 units, only available in "Professional" orange, and has a distinctive aluminum bezel insert.? For those curious, "Aristera" is Greek for "left," and Doxa's own name comes from the Greek word for "glory." Regardless of nomenclature, this lefty 300T maintains much of what makes the standard model a lynchpin of Doxa's lineup, including a steel case that measures 42.5mm (14mm thick and 44.5mm l2l) and has a helium escape valve, 1,200 mete...

At a press conference in Geneva today, independent brands Ming, Fleming, and J.N. Shapiro announced a new brand alliance called the Alternative Horological Alliance. The goal is to take three brands that have thought outside the traditional watchmaking structures and combine their experience, passion, and knowledge to continue along that path and foster other brands along the way. This isn't a "group," in the same way as Swatch or Richemont, but something closer to the Acadmie Horlogre des Crateurs Indpendants (AHCI). The three brands have not announced any corporate conglomerate or profit-sharing. Instead, they are using the...
Introducing: The Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Sandstone, The Marriage Of Two Collections
Uniquely classic with modern touches, there is no brand quite like Laurent Ferrier. For Geneva Watch Days 2024, two of its most popular collections have been combined to create a new and entirely on-brand watch. If you know Laurent Ferrier, you know the Classic Micro-Rotor. This is the brand's flagship product, combining horological innovation with a level of finishing on par with only the best. Looking at the past few years of Laurent Ferrier releases, the integrated bracelet Sport Auto has been a clear focus and a respectable expansion of the brand's design language into a new watch category. The Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto, t...
Introducing: All 1.65mm Of The Konstantin Chaykin ThinKing Prototype
In case you missed the headlines, today marks the start of Geneva Watch Days, and we have our first big surprise reveal for the show as the Russian independent brand Konstantin Chaykin shared a new prototype watch called the ThinKing C and it's just 1.65mm thick (or thin).? For those not following this "thin is more" arms race, the ThinKing follows the progressive battle between brands like Piaget, Richard Mille, and Bulgari in pushing the envelope for just how thin one can make a mechanical watch. To summarize a whole lot of engineering and marketing, Piaget got to 2mm with the Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon, Richard Mill...
Hands-On: The Unimatic Modello Uno And Modello Quattro GMTs With Japanese Movements
The Unimatic GMT is no stranger to us at Hodinkee. Back in 2021, Unimatic's first GMT was the Hodinkee collaboration U1H-GMT, which saw the introduction of the Sellita-based SW330-2 to the brand. Since then, we have seen a few (but not many) additional GMTs added to the archives C from a titanium GMT with ETA movement to a Modello Quattro done in collaboration with Canadian menswear retailer Henry Singer, and of course the second Hodinkee edition in forged carbon. With those editions, prices have generally hovered around or above the mid-$1,000 mark, and as much as $3,000 for the forged carbon cases. The original Unimatic x Hod...
Introducing: The A. Lange & Sohne Datograph Handwerkskunst Limited Edition
Earlier this year, at Watches & Wonders in April, A. Lange & Sohne kicked off the celebrations for both the 30th anniversary of the brand as well as the 25th anniversary of the Datograph. Two show-stopper novelties were introduced: the 125-piece Datograph Up/Down Limited Edition in white gold and the 50-piece Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon Lumen in Honeygold. Today, Lange shows that they're not done with celebrating the Datograph just yet, as they announce an all-new Datograph Handwerkskunst in yellow gold. I know I'm usually supposed to save my reactions until the "What We Think" portion of the article, but wow, this one's stunning. ...
This week, Grand Seiko brings back into the modern catalog two recreations of an iconic vintage Grand Seiko model created back in 1968 C the 45GS C in a limited run. The 45GS is often seen as the little brother to the 44GS C released one year ahead of the 45GS in 1967; the 44GS was the watch that established the "grammar of design" that has defined the Grand Seiko's creative philosophy for decades. While the 44GS has been modernized and finds a place in the modern catalog, albeit in a thicker and bulkier version, the 45GS hasn't had the same kind of attention from the brand. In 2013, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of watchmaking at Seiko, the brand released a faithful 44GS recreation in ...
It's Friday of Geneva Watch Days and if you're looking for a break from new releases, you're in the right place. The watch internet gods made it easy for me this week, I cannot lie. Watches kept on popping up on my radar and making their way to my working list C I even had to make a few cuts! I have two auction results to recap from our last installment, published on August 23rd, and both are strong. The pink-on-pink Movado on eBay hammered for $2,000, slightly exceeding my expectations and personal max bid! Congrats to the new owner, you got a good one. Our seized Patek Nautilus ref. 5711/1300A-001 found a new home this morning for an all-in price of 354,960 C ...
Hands-On: An Unusual Chronograph Revival C The Nivada Grenchen Chronosport
You know what? Sometimes, I miss things. I'll admit it. I saw the press release for the Nivada Grenchen Chronosport C a recreation of a vintage Nivada (as the brand does) and immediately put it out of my mind. The thing looked weird. I can't place another chronograph with subdials at nine and 12 o'clock, with a date at three o'clock. It felt like an unfinished idea (not the fault of the new one, but more about the prototype it was based on) and almost disconcertingly visually top-heavy. My gut said that the community would feel the same, and I didn't feel like I needed to create a forum to dunk on a solid recreation of a watch that I thought suffered for no other reason than being weird.? ...
