By now, you should know if you're among the lucky 1,500 offered an M.A.D.1S. If you are, congratulations. If not, don't get too down C there will be more M.A.D.Editions in the future. For the rest who need a catch-up, let me say this: I genuinely believe that the release of the M.A.D.Editions' M.A.D.1 was a watershed moment for horology. MB&F, a brand long known as a flag bearer for collaboration and community, was also known for the high price tag that comes with avant-garde high horology. You see an MB&F, and the price makes sense. The complexity, the finishing, the engineering, the design, and the low production numbers scream "expensive." But when you...

At Geneva Watch Days last week, Laurent Ferrier quietly released a new watch in their "Classic" case shape. While understated C and as a part of their Srie Atelier, limited to only 20 pieces C it left an impression on me as one of the strongest releases of the fair.? Understated isn't a bad thing. That, alongside consistent quality and attention to detail, is why Laurent Ferrier drew so many fans in the first place. As Rich Fordon pointed out in his introduction, those who wanted a Laurent Ferrier got one and then many moved on. Being "understated" kind of fell out of vogue for many collectors. Well, this is the kind of year tha...

Chanel just launched the Premire Sound, a sautoir necklace watch with headphones attached. The release isn't entirely surprising given that watch-jewelry is trending (see Rihanna and Taylor Swift and an entire wave of social media dedicated to the matter). Time-telling jewels are nothing new C it's just a very millennial trait to think we did everything first. Pendant watches were all the rage back in the 1700s, then again during the Belle poque of the 19th century and the Art Nouveau period of the early 20th century and then again in the 1970s. Ring watches were also worn throughout various periods of history and also seem to have resurfaced, but I have to put my foot down somewhere.? ...

Earlier this year, my colleague Jonathan McWhorter introduced TAG Heuer's latest collaboration with Porsche, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963. The styling of that watch was certainly aggressive, in the purposeful sense of the term, and incorporated many elements from the Porsche 963 as an homage to the race car. It was produced in a limited edition of 963 pieces, and while quite a large number, the watch is sold out on TAG Heuer's website and seemingly at most other retailers online. Undoubtedly, a large chunk of these have gone on the wrists of Porsche owners and fans of autosport. The four new dial variations of the Extreme Sport. ...

Last week, a handful of Hodinkee editors flew to Switzerland to experience Geneva Watch Days, an annual fair held at the end of August that includes a wide array of brands and their most recent releases C many of which you can find here. After several days on the scene in Geneva, and with the rest of the edit team closely watching Instagram and email for the latest announcements, below are our favorite releases from Geneva's summer show.?And a video bonus: here's a look at the team on ground in Geneva, and what they saw... Ben Clymer: Berneron Mirage 34mm Tiger's Eye I have something to admit C I have...

This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written by HSNY's librarian, Miranda Marraccini. Wie spaet ist es? Vad ?r klockan? Horas, minutos y segundos. Do you feel like you stumbled into a Duolingo nightmare without warning? Don't worry. I began with the phrases above to give you an idea of the quiet babble that takes place every day among the books in our library at the Horological Society of New York (HSNY).Since starting in my role here more than two years ago, I've understood the collection to be deeply multilingual. Every day I learn more words that help me find books and assist researchers: Kuckucksuhren, or cuckoo clocks in German. Orologi da po...

At this year's Monterey Car Week, the annual celebration of automotive excellence in and around Monterey, California, Range Rover House was again at the center of the festivities. With spectacular views, exceptional hospitality and a range of exhibits and debuts including the new Range Rover SV Carmel Edition, Range Rover House allowed guests to immerse themselves in the legendary British automaker's lifestyle and luxury hospitality. As with last year's events, Hodinkee teamed up with Range Rover to provide an element of horological excitement and style. With a new home on the approach of the Pop...

Great news for those of us averse to braving crowds or waiting in lines: Some two years after the original launch, Swatch has fulfilled the promise of making its now-beloved MoonSwatch available for purchase on the great wide web (better late than never, as they say.) Now, to be clear, not all of the Missions are available online, and availability is limited to the United States and China. So, if you're on the hunt for the full set, you can still find joy in the hunt for a complete collection via brick-and-mortar retail, but if you want one of "The Classic Four": Mission on Earth, Mission to the Moon, Mission to the Sun, or Mission to Mars C you can easily have your pick at the whim of a dou...

In November of 2022, Hamilton seemingly answered the watch community's unending requests for a smaller version of the Interstellar-associated Khaki Field Murph by releasing one in 38mm. A full 10 years since the movie's release (time flies), Hamilton comes out with two updates to the 38mm Khaki Field Murph that I'm not sure many people asked for, but certainly can't complain about. First, the black dial variant of the 38mm Murph gets a stainless-steel bracelet. As the watch originally seen in Interstellar was on a leather strap, this appears to be a move to position the Murph as a watch not just for the intersection of movie geek...

There are few luxury American retail outlets that are true institutions. Outside of the Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue New York department store dominance C (RIP Barneys) C Tiffany & Co. remains at the forefront of the luxury American shopping experience. Given its 2021 acquisition by LVMH, the brand's unequivocal blue box and white ribbon branding has been catapulted back to some degree of relevance. How did the all-American brand that historically produces trophies to crown the winners of countless sporting events, including the Super Bowl, create a new foothold in 2020s pop culture? By making Beyonce and Jay-Z their poster couple, of course. Tack o...

Happy Friday and welcome back to Bring A Loupe! The watch market never stops and neither do I. At the top end, the big auction houses are set to announce their Geneva catalogs for November soon enough C start saving your pennies. Or don't and keep reading for the best of what's available right now across the world of vintage and not-so-vintage watches. Recapping last week, I was glad to hear that our tropical Tudor with original owner provenance found a new home. As for auction results, the Longines roulette pocket watch hammered for CHF 4,200 at Ineichen, the minty 1950s Rolex OP sold for $2,100, and the vintage Carrera on eBay was mysteriously removed due to "a...

The Singer Reimagined DiveTrack is one of the most interesting, impressive, and overbuilt watches I've ever seen. Yes, the watch is far too expensive ($98,000) to be a practical dive watch. It's also not as accurate or as useful as a dive computer. I struggle to imagine a person who would find it (at 49mm by 19.67mm thick) wearable on a daily basis. And yet, all of those caveats are trumped by one important thing: it's an incredibly creative spin on the dive watch when I feel like the platform needs it the most. Dive watches have felt stagnant for quite a while. I love a good dive watch C I arguably own too many of them C but whe...

Baltic has come a long way since its founding eight years ago. Founded by Etienne Malec, the brand started as a Kickstarter darling. With its first campaign in 2017 for the BICOMPAX 001 and HMS 001, Baltic whipped up the collector community in a frenzy with an homage to classic vintage watches with an ambitiously low price tag. The campaign was a success, raising 514,806 and demolishing their initial goal of 65,000. Now, in 2024, Baltic can't even really be called a microbrand anymore. With 11 product collections spanning 48 watches, the brand has cemented itself as a mainstay in the circuit C selling predominantly directly to ...

We're coming to you live today from sunny Cupertino, California, at Apple Park. We just attended Apple's "It's Glowtime" event, where the brand unveiled the latest generation iPhone and Apple Watch. While we saw a plethora of updates across the iPhone and AirPods, we are, of course, here to talk about the Apple Watch. So, let's dig into the recently announced 10th-generation Apple Watch.? From The Archives: Ben's Thoughts On The First Apple Watch (2014) A Watch Guy's Thoughts On The Apple Watch After Seeing It In The Metal The Apple Watch Series 10 marks the tenth anniversary of the announcement of the first, released thi...

The first thing that hits you about the Daniel Roth Tourbillon Rose Gold is the black polish. Flip over the watch to view the caliber DR001 through the sapphire caseback C an evolution from the Souscription's closed caseback C and you'll see a curved bridge with perfectly executed black polish contrasted against the C?tes de Geneve on the larger bridges. When I wrote our intro for the new Tourbillon Rose Gold a couple of weeks ago, I didn't appreciate the level of finishing. It's hard to with just a few renders. But in person, the execution of the new Tourbillon is immediately apparent. The same feeli...

There are factory tours, and then there are factory tours. In my few short years at Hodinkee, I've been lucky to have a look behind the curtain at several of the world's top watchmakers. Other brands might focus on complications, design, accuracy, handcraft, or production volume, but C to me, at least C no brand combines all of the above like Grand Seiko. Fresh off my return from Japan, I'm still floored by everything I saw on my recent week-long trip. The Credor Spring Drive Sonnerie was launched at Baselworld in 2006 and still holds up as incredible watchmaking today. Seiko has run its "media experience" since the early 2000...

If your ideal Sunday afternoon involves a casual scroll of Hodinkee.com or, worse, you are (un)lucky enough to work in the watch world, it is easy to become desensitized. Look at enough photos of a tourbillon cage on your favorite personal screen, and even the handiwork of Abraham-Louis Breguet can evoke a feeling of numbness or, to put it another way, a thought of "yep, just another tourb." In reality, watchmaking is only truly experienced in person. Reading this site and others like it can supplement the experience, but it's not the whole experience. This is why, upon hearing of Jaeger-LeCoultre's latest traveling collection, rather than letting my eyes glaze over, I took a closer look. ...

It's impossible to keep up with all the releases that happen in a year. In the past, I've been pretty open about the fact that I occasionally will miss something that I later realize was a big deal. Sometimes we just don't fully appreciate something until we have a bit of hindsight. So with the mix of Geneva Watch Days releases and my recent travel to Japan, I almost missed something I think has a lot of potential to be a major classic. The new SLGA025G "Atera Valley" Spring Drive model is downright gorgeous. I didn't have a chance to look at all the releases from the brand at the end of August, and while my colleague TanTan cove...

My final appointment, if you can call it that, during a whirlwind 48 hours at Geneva Watch Days was an impromptu meeting over beers with young German watchmakers Johannes Kallinich and Thibault Claeys on a patio overlooking Lake Geneva. The young watchmakers were sitting with JX Su (Watches by SJX) and called me over to take a look at their first independent watch, the Einser. After starting their watchmaking careers at A. Lange & Sohne, the duo has stepped out on their own, in part hoping to prove that Glashtte can be a home to independent watchmaking. After announcing the Einser, Kallinich Claeys quickly sold through all 30 pieces C impressive for two rela...
