If you know G-Shock lore, you know that the "father of G-Shock," Mr. Kikuo Ibe, pursued his shock-resistant design for the now iconic watch with a simple rubber ball prototype in the early 1980s. The first commercial model, the DW-5000C, released in 1983, deviated significantly from that spherical concept. Still, as G-Shock designs have grown progressively bolder over the last four decades, Ibe's original ball-inspired vision has finally materialized in the extreme spherical design of the new GA-V01. Under the surface, this is still the ani-digi G-Shock design that many people might recognize (though with a more animal-faced disp...

This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written by its librarians. Today's post was written by library intern Freddy Thompson. The Horological Society of New York (HSNY) has a wonderful library full of books on everything from escapements to celestial navigation to the Loch Ness monster (yes, really), but did you also know we have significant archival holdings, too? While books (and a few of our more bookish blooks) can be neatly cataloged and arranged on the shelf by their Library of Congress call numbers, archival items can be a lot trickier. These items can range from exhibition flyers to diaries to T-shirts and jigsaw puzzles (all real examples i...

Earlier this week, Louis Vuitton announced their most recent automata, and there's no arguing that these watches represent a nich within a nich within a nich of watchmaking. Incredibly expensive, often completely impractical for telling the time, and with a focus on mechanical and artistic craft, they're anything but daily wear watches. In fact, 99.9999 (I could go on) percent of readers will probably never see automata in person, but the craft of making these moving pieces of horological art plays a large part in horological history. Louis Vuitton's Tambour "Carpe Diem" from 2021. Automata were often the thing of royalty o...

Just last month, Ral Pags launched his second production timepiece in the Ral Pags RP2, itself a long-awaited sequel to his detente escapement RP1. Now, the independent watchmaker is back to something a lot more (relatively) accessible with Massena LAB in the Noctograph limited edition. The Noctograph is Massena LAB's third collaboration with Pags, adding to the designs already established with the Magraph and Absinthe. Massena cites inspiration in the dial design from the watches of the 1930s to 1950s, and that inspiration feels stronger than it's ever been on one of these watches. This time, the dial is colored in a shade of dark blue and vertically brushe...

When it comes to modern watchmakers working on resonance calibers, only a handful of makers come to mind. Armin Strom is a rarity in its ability to make the complication a core element of its brand identity over the past several years, as when it comes to things like resonance watchmaking, serial production is an impressive feat all in and of itself. Armin Strom's Dual Time GMT Resonance 'Manufacture Edition,' the brand's latest limited edition of 50 pieces, packs two timekeeping mechanisms into a single watch with the brand's in-house ARF22 caliber and a new monochromatic aesthetic. Now in steel instead of the white gold of its predecessor, this latest version expands the line, and at $110,...

A little secret (or maybe not-so-secret) about Watches and Wonders is that, over the years, more and more brands have started to send out press releases in advance or give preview opportunities so that the companies can make sure their releases don't get lost in the shuffle. And yet, every year, there are inevitably a few surprises. This year, one of the biggest surprises was the expansion of the relatively newly renewed Parmigiani Fleurier Toric line with the introduction of the new Toric Perpetual Calendar. Part of the delay in writing about the new watch is that it's subtly captivating in a way that makes it feel like it has b...

The words "Urwerk" and "subtle" usually don't belong in the same sentence. The brand's watches are often big, bold, and uniquely identifiable from a mile away. Since 1997, co-founders Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei have stuck to their roots in creating highly stylized machines for the wrist, mostly through the use of the wandering hours complication to create new ways to approach the display and progress of time in their machines. When the UR-100V Magic T launched in 2023, it took the 100 series and design language, added a full titanium bracelet, and toned down everything by a few degrees. The brand ended up with one of the most "minimalist" Urwerks in the wh...

Corum, the watch brand known for its "Golden Bridge" and coin watch models, has been sold in a management buyout that will return the brand to Swiss ownership. A group of managers and investors led by Corum's International Sales Director, Haso Mehmedovic, struck a deal to buy the 70-year-old brand based in La-Chaux-de-Fonds from Citychamp Watch & Jewellery Group Limited (a Hong Kong-listed company that has owned Corum since 2013).Mehmedovic, a trained watchmaker who has risen up the ranks at Corum for about 15 years, will become the new company's CEO and chairman. The company plans to relaunch its brand in mid-2026. The new CEO is the majority shareholder in the venture, and his partners...

Diving and Doxa go hand in hand, and a big part of that comes from the brand's incredible history of making dive watches during the golden era of SCUBA. Our friends over at Analog:Shift recently published an excellent look into Doxa's remarkable past following the recent release of the new Sub 250T GMT. Written by the ever-talented Oren Hartov, it's a retelling of how Doxa became an influential brand in the world of diving, the Cousteau connection, the special colorways, and the oddball dive watch design that ties it all together.? Founded in 1889 by a 21-year-old Swiss man, Georges Ducommun, Doxa, like many others, has been thro...

Happy 10th birthday to the Brew Watch Co. team! Founded by industrial designer Jonathan Ferrer, the caffeine-powered brand, with its Metric and Retrograph designs, has become a mainstay in the microbrand scene. And to celebrate this milestone anniversary, the folks over at Brew have just revealed the highest-end read: most expensive timepiece the brand has ever produced. It would make sense that an anniversary edition would be something a little different and a little nicer, and with the new manually-wound Metric, Brew ditches mechaquartz to offer a watch for the mechanically inclined. ...

For the wide world of watches, there may be no more exciting time than the months following Watches and Wonders. With a ton of new releases dropping, there's always plenty of interesting new pieces to see. But while we all can understand the gripes with watches we would love to buy but are in short supply, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of options out there that are worth a closer look. With that in mind, Watches of Switzerland (which owns Hodinkee) put on an event at their New York City boutique in SoHo this past week, effectively turning the space into a "discovery center" for a number of brands, including Blancpain, Gerald Charles, Girard-Perregaux, Gla...

Happy Friday, and welcome back to Bring A Loupe! Imagine your surprise, driving down the interstate in Alabama, you look to your left and see a kangaroo hopping along the median. This happened, marking my favorite news story of recent memory. Her name is Sheila, and her owner is Patrick Starr; these are just the facts. Anyway, when I see something like this week's Polerouter while scrolling through eBay, it's a bit like seeing Sheila on I-85. But first, results. Our lead pick from last edition, a Cartier "Reverso," did well over at Lyon & Turnbull, selling for 41,450. The Patek Philippe Solar Desk Clock ended up at $3,000, and our humble Rolex Oyster Perpetu...

If you caught any of Hodinkee Radio during Watches and Wonders a few weeks back, you probably heard about Lange's latest releases. After a quick chat about the new Rolex Land-Dweller, Lange was the first brand brought up on our day 1 podcast ?it was top of mind. Malaika Crawford remarked, "Everyone who works at Hodinkee is a Lange head," and that is likely more than true. This brand has a special ability to grasp the attention of enthusiasts via almost every watch in its catalog. Put very simply by Ben, "it's because we know what watches are." With Lange, one can often assume that some insane complication will sit at the center...

The economic uncertainty created by dramatic shifts in U.S. trade policy, including tariffs on Swiss watches, could cause consumers to delay purchasing high-end timepieces, the Chief Executive Officer of Omega says. "The world was shaken,'' by the tariffs, Raynald Aeschlimann said in Biel at an event to highlight Omega's 60-year anniversary since winning NASA qualification for the Speedmaster model to be issued to astronauts on manned space flights and become the first watch worn on the moon. Raynald Aeschlimann, CEO of Omega SA "Shaken because there's uncertainty about what's going to happen with the economy, what's going to ...

This weekend, the Miami Grand Prix returns to Florida for the race's fourth outing since the event was added to the Formula 1 calendar in 2022. Given the increased importance of the North American audience in the current Drive to Survive environment, the sport has expanded in recent years, adding Miami and Las Vegas to the US race trio that also includes Austin, Texas. It's a massive weekend, and Tudor has again leveraged the Miami GP as an opportunity to launch a new watch in partnership with the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls (VCARB) team. This year, it's more than a new colorway or a ceramic Black Bay. It's a carbon fiber-cased chronograph with motorsports intentions called the Black Bay Chro...

Back in 2023, James Stacey did his quintessential Stacey-est work for A Week On The Wrist with the original Heritage Diver's GMT in green, ref SPB381. Then, just a few months ago, to celebrate the brand's 60th anniversary, it upgraded the watch to 300m of water resistance for a limited edition release with a blue wave dial. Now, that watch has become a general release, not a limited one, in the SPB519. It's a little bit thicker than those 2023 pieces (now 42mm by 13.3mm) to allow that water resistance, but still has the caliber 6R54 movement with hours, minutes, seconds, GMT (in 24-hour independent, aka, "caller" style), and date at 4:30.? ...

If you've ever looked at Doxa's budget offering C the Sub 200 C and thought that the sapphire bezel just looked a bit modern, out of place, or not to your taste in general but loved all that it offered from an affordability and wearability standpoint, well, there's yet more options in the Sub 200 line now. Doxa has just announced a new Sub 200 line extension, which doesn't replace but rather complements the existing options, with a steel bezel insert that gives the watch a bit more of a retro toolish feel. You can still get all eight colors C Professional, Sharkhunter, Sea Rambler being my picks for most iconic C and a choice of ...

Over the last few years, I C like a lot of people C have started to follow Formula 1. Sure, Im maybe a part of the Drive to Survive bandwagon, but its been thrilling to follow the sport from afar, follow the drama on and off the track, and spend a lot of my spare time reading about everything in between the races. But finally, this past weekend, I got to experience that action in person at the Miami Grand Prix.? The first thing on display for Grand Prix weekend was this Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team car for Lance Stroll with the Vantage in the background. I was invited to the event by The Concours Club, a members-only automo...
