Sinn started out in 1961 producing cockpit instrumentation and pilot's chronographs, and today the focus remains on pilot's watches, even decades later. There's always been a keen focus on producing function-forward chronographs since the '60s, but perhaps the best value in the range exists in the time-only segment. The Sinn 556 is the German manufacturer's bare-bones pilot's watch model. It's the most affordable in all of Sinn's lineup, coming in at $1,530 on a bracelet. And for that money it's more about what you don't get C there are no bells and whistles here; its charm lies in its absolute simplicity. The "base" model 556 comes in two dial executions: The 55...

The weird and wonderful world of watches is full of characters with the greatest degrees of passion. And the very best of them are not only deeply thoughtful and incredibly committed to the pursuit of collecting, but also to the idea of sharing all he or she may have learned over the years. Consider the likes of John Goldberger, Jason Singer, and Alfredo Paramico, for example, who have been dedicated players on the high-end auction scene long before the likes of most of us, and took the time to share all they'd learned with us here on Talking Watches. Today, I am so pleased to introduce you to another such man C a watch collector of the absolute highest order, Mr. Patrick Getreide, the owner...

Timex has just announced the very first GMT variant of its flagship, quartz-powered Q Timex. Inspired by the original Q Timex watches released in the late 1970s and '80s, the contemporary Q Timex collection gained a cult online following after it was revived in early 2019. The rampant enthusiasm that surrounded that release three years ago has been cited as a predecessor to the recent MoonSwatch mania that gripped the watch collecting world in late March.?So, the big question I have with today's announcement is:?Will the new Q Timex GMT garner the same sort of hype? I don't see why it wouldn't, especially if you're looking at it ...

Last week we highlighted a handful of watches that recommend themselves for everyday wear C less flash, more versatility, and exciting enough to monopolize your wrist time. No major surprise: They were all stainless steel. Today, we're zooming in on solid gold watches. Why gold? Why not gold? It's the archetypal luxury watch material and has the capacity to transform an ostensible tool watch into an unimpeachable status symbol. The watch world may feel a little topsy turvy with people clamoring for steel, but the ship will inevitably turn, and when it does gold will regain its rightful place at the top. Here are six gold watches that ...

The humble watch strap usually isn't the focus of attention, but it plays an important role in terms of the comfort, function, and style of a timepiece. And if you're itching for a seasonal refresh without adding a new watch to your collection, straps are here to bring a little change into your life.? Before we get to the readings and recommendations, a quick history lesson on the rise of the watch strap. Straps first arrived on the scene when soldiers in the late 1800s started wearing their pocket watches on their wrists for easier use, securing them with leather straps. By the early 1900s women started attaching them with metal chains and bracelets, treating th...

I landed in Geneva this morning on a mission. I'll be in the capital of Swiss watchmaking for the next week in order to cover the spring watch auction circuit.?Phillips, Sotheby's, Christie's, and Antiquorum all have sales lined up to occur around the city each day from May 6 to May 10. These aren't the first auctions of the year. Sotheby's officially kicked the auction calendar into high gear last week in Hong Kong with two auctions, headlined by the heavy-hitting Nevadian Collector sale. Antiquorum has also had a number of live auctions already, and the Monaco Legend Group had an impressive showing in late April as well. But the upcoming week of auctions is the...

It was almost too James Bond for me to believe, but sure enough, it was all true. At a dinner on Wednesday celebrating the recently launched Doxa Army, I was having a chat with Robert P. Hilty, a retired Swiss commando, where he told me all about Switzerland's self-destructing infrastructure. Bridges, tunnels, runways, and roadways have all been rigged to explode if a foreign force invades the nation. "There are tunnels lining the runways of Zurich Airport that used to be filled with explosives. Of course, these were inert explosives, so it's not like anyone could set them off," Hilty said. I asked Mr. Hilty how Swiss forces could be ...

"I didn't know the difference between a mechanical watch and a quartz watch, and then seven months later I'm interviewing Fran?ois-Paul Journe." These are the words of Michael Culyba C director and editor of the documentary film Keeper of Time which premiered last night at the SVA theater in New York City to a capacity crowd of well over 400 attendees. This is a movie set firmly in the watch world but it isn't just a film about watches. It's a film that pushes you to think about time in new ways, and takes you about as far down the rabbit hole as you can go. It's as much a film for the seasoned collector as it is for someone who has n...

There's an idea in art known as "the child's eye." It's the artistic freedom that comes when a child, unburdened by "rules" or expectations, picks up a brush, pen, or camera and works from pure creativity. The cruelty is, the harder you try to regain that freedom, the further you usually find yourself from it. In Fran?ois-Paul Journe's early work, like his Rsonance pocket watch movement in 1983 and the prototype Chronomtre Rsonance wristwatch in 1998, you see the "child's eye" of reckless abandon C designs conscious of the depth of watchmaking history yet only preoccupied with what "could be." Ov...

Headline image, ytterbium atom?"optical lattice" atomic clock. It goes without saying that units of measurement are of little use unless everyone agrees on what they actually are C if my meter is longer or shorter than your meter, things like modern science go straight out the window. In France, by the time the Revolution rolled around, there were something like 800 different units of measurement (including the ligne, still used in watchmaking and one of the few survivors from the pre-Republican period) which was, as they say in this man's army, a real Charlie Foxtrot. The second is one of the fundamental units of measurement whose de...

Akio Naito, the affable boss of the Seiko Watch Corporation, is sitting with me inside the Grand Seiko booth at Watches & Wonders 2022. The entire show is full of unexpected presences. In its previous incarnation as the Salon International Haute de la Haute Horlogerie, or SIHH, neither Patek, Rolex, Tudor or Grand Seiko were present and now all four are in Geneva in force, along with several other newcomers. In contrast to the brand's relatively small, slightly cramped former booth at the back of the second floor of Hall 1 in Baselworld, the booth at Watches & Wonders 2022 is enormous C high, almost cathedral-like ceilings, a waiting area perfumed by elaborate wooden panels, and a ma...

Auction catalogs can be overwhelming. You're presented, all at once, with hundreds of watches from all sorts of eras and all sorts of makers. Each watch has its own history, and the price that ends up being paid for each watch is the result of a series of small decisions made by the consignor, the auction house, and C?the most important person in the room C?the buyer. I'm in Geneva this week for the first major swing of the auction calendar. Phillips, Antiquorum, Sotheby's, and Christie's have all put together some serious, heavy-hitting catalogs, filled with all sorts of special and interesting watches. On Sunday, I took a look at 24 of the lots I found most com...

Last Thursday, the watch world descended upon New York City's SVA Theater to witness the world premiere of Michael Culyba's first feature length documentary, Keeper of Time. A packed house of over 400 watched his film C a movie about watches, time, mortality, and family C in the darkened theater, and stayed for a special panel hosted by our own Editor in Chief, Jack Forster. The panel was comprised of HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer, Michael Friedman, Gary Shteyngart, Will Andrewes, Brittany Cox, William Massena, and Culyba himself. You can see a photo of all the panelists in the lead image, above. Of course, HODINKEE had a cohort on the scene for the film's debut. I...

Last Friday, April 29th Jason (aka @wristshotnyc) and David ?(aka @davidp.nyc), of the Instagram account and watch-collecting community Complecto, brought a bunch of watch fans together at Celon Bar in New York City. Watch meetups are nothing new, but this one focused on diversity and inclusivity in the watch community. It didn't matter if you were a complete newbie or serious collector C everyone and every watch was welcomed with open arms. Styles P (center), with Complecto founders Jason (left) and David (right) Watchmaker Jose Vega was there, so was photographer Lydia Winters, and the guys from the Wrist Check podcast. Oh, ...

What's the first thing you think of when you hear the name Karl Lagerfeld? Is it his decades-long tenure as the creative director of Fendi and Chanel? Or perhaps his?powder-white hair, black-out sunglasses, and iconic starched collars? Maybe it's Choupette, his beloved cat (and potential heiress?) who has more than 110,000 Instagram followers. For me, the first thing that always comes to mind is the late designer's absolute dedication to the color black. It's present not just on his sunglasses, but on his jackets, his gloves, and C most importantly, for our purposes C his watch. ?Lagerfeld has long been associated with a very unusual ...

The first Monday in May started with a literal bang C via a nasty early-morning thunderstorm C and ended with a metaphorical bang by way of the 2022 Met Gala. Celebrities and notable public figures, from the world over, made their way to our concrete metropolis, to flaunt some of the most outrageous fashion choices you're likely ever to see. None of the normal folk get to enter the hallowed halls of the Metropolitan Museum (where the yearly gala is held ), so we're left to drool at the 'fits as celebs walk the red carpet. Think of it like the Oscars, but?only?the red carpet part C and the carpet isn't actually red. Last year (ok, eight months ago) it was beige. This year it's red, white, and...

Ever since Phillips announced a thematic sale centered around the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak, I've been itching to get my hands on lot 8, the earliest known example of the Royal Oak to come to auction and the second Royal Oak ever produced, as determined by the "A2" serial number. Well, earlier this week I was able to spend some time with the historic reference at Phillips HQ in Geneva.? There are plenty of interesting Royal Oaks up for grabs during the spring auction season. I covered the blacked-out 5402ST with potential Karl Lagerfeld provenance yesterday (which will also sell at Phillips on Friday), and later this week...

Baltic, the brand known for distilling the vintage aesthetic into its entire product line of time-only, chronograph, dive, and dress models, is celebrating its fifth anniversary (yes, it's only been around five years) with an admittedly out-of-character, entirely colorful, Aquascaphe Dual-Crown. This celebratory limited edition looks like it was ripped straight out of an episode of any Nickelodeon show, circa 1990-whatever you please. The moment I first laid eyes on the press images of this watch, and its distinct mixture of turquoise-green and purple, I said to myself, 'If I'm going to cover this, I have to see it in person C nothing else will do it justice.' An...

You never know what you're going to see during auction season. A few moments ago, the team at Phillips, in association with Bacs & Russo, presented to me a very special one-of-a-kind example of the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph 5270 that will be auctioned off on November 7, 2022, at the biannual Children Action Gala. The watch in question is a unique piece of Patek's current flagship perpetual calendar chronograph, cased in titanium (!), with an emerald green sunburst dial (!!). The watch will be on display over the next few days during the Phillips Geneva Watch Auction XV preview at Hotel La Reserve on the outskirts of Geneva.? ...
