Introducing The New Bulgari Tourbillon Chronograph Skeleton Automatic Platinum
I don't know about all of you, but my Bulgari bingo card for 2022 decidedly did not include a complicated new chronograph. That is, however, what we have here in the new-for-2022 Tourbillon Chronograph Skeleton Automatic, the first time we've seen Bulgari revisit its 2020 record-setting release for the world's thinnest tourbillon chronograph wristwatch ever made.?After its inaugural release in titanium, Bulgari is now offering the complicated ultra-thin wristwatch in platinum with blue accents in a limited run of 30 watches.? The new release...
The Breguet Dual Time Hora Mundi Marine
The weight of history varies from brand to brand, but there probably isn't a single brand whose founder casts a longer shadow than Breguet. Abraham-Louis Breguet was born in Switzerland but made his fortune in Paris before and after the French Revolution, and he left his mark on virtually every facet of watchmaking. He might be the most striking example of a polymath in watchmaking C an inexhaustible experimenter and horological inventor, he also excelled at design (his watch designs and compositions have influenced some of the greatest horologists of all time, including George Daniels) and even at marketing his own work C just one example are the Souscription pocket watches, which were reas...
Patek Ref. 5470P-001 1/10th Second Monopusher Chronograph
Patek Philippe has, for better or worse, become synonymous in the minds of many enthusiasts with the Nautilus C a stainless steel sports watch that launched in 1976 and which has been having a very prolonged moment in the spotlight. However, as Thierry Stern told HODINKEE's Nick Marino at Watches & Wonders 2022, the company is not satisfied to be thought of as just a maker of on-trend steel bracelet watches, and its releases for the show were a reminder that Patek isn't Patek because one watch became an Instagram darling. The two pillars of watchmaking at Patek have always been quality in finishing and irreproachable execution in the making of complicated wat...
Talking Watches With Jimmy O. Yang
I first became aware of Jimmy O. Yang because of his role on Silicon Valley as Jian-Yang, a character whose occasionally menacing, always scene-stealing deadpan made the HBO series a must-watch comedy. From there, the Hong Kong-born actor, comic, and writer went on to the silver screen (Crazy Rich Asians), an Amazon stand-up special (Good Deal), a sitcom opposite Steve Carell and John Malkovich (Space Force), and most recently, a starring role in the holiday-season rom-com Love Hard. Jimmy O. Yang is a watch guy through and through, something you can sense pretty quickly when you watch his work. It's easy to spot the red and blue...
Japanese Microbrand Mirco Uses Color To Tell A Story
While the major brands may have finally started experimenting with using a whole range of colors in their watches, one Japanese microbrand is a step ahead of everyone else. Mirco, who we've covered before, recently released their Type-03, and it comes in five colors you probably haven't seen used in watchmaking. These five colors have been used extensively in the making of Japanese kimonos, a traditional garment. The Japanese names of the colors are: Kurumizome, Masuhanairo, Kayairo, Shikocha, and Kuriume. They're muted, subtle, and could probably be referred to as "earthy pastel tones." Masayasu Hira...
HODINKEE Staff Photographer Tiffany Wade's Geneva Photo Diary
Watches & Wonders 2022 marked my first time in Switzerland and my first time out of the States in two years. I wanted to document my own memories of the trip, ?so I brought the SLR camera my dad gave to me for my very first black-and-white photography class. Shooting not just the watches on display but the people and the city allowed me to experience my first Watches & Wonders the best way I know how. From shooting fellow first-timers to seasoned veterans thrilled to be back on the convention floors, I was able to document the quiet moments that made the trip feel special. So here are my little wonders, starting with Jack Forster leading us on walk through Geneva, all the way through...
The New Oris ProPilot X Caliber 400 Is the Horological Equivalent Of A Summer Jam
It's that time of year when a catchy tune hits the radio and captures the mood perfectly. The kind of infectious song that's on in the background while you're using an old wire brush to clean off the grill grids in between sips from a sweaty bottle of Mexican lager. The days are getting longer, and your patience for folks harshing your mellow is growing shorter. For me, that song was Sam Hunt's Hard to Forget in 2020 and Fancy Like by Walker Hayes last summer because I'm bougie like Natty in a styrofoam cup. And then there's the notion of a perfect "summer watch." Back in the summer of '19, we explore...
A Phillips Watch Auction Is Scheduled For June 2022 In New York
Exciting news out of HODINKEE's own backyard this morning: Phillips, in association with Bacs & Russo, has just announced it will be hosting its first-ever spring season sale in New York this year. The event will take place at the auction house's U.S. headquarters at 432 Park Avenue, from June 11-12, 2022. Don't miss our Photo Report from the last time Phillips was in New York. Image, James K./@waitlisted Since 2017, Phillips has hosted a single watch auction in New York at the end of each calendar year, in December, in addition to two sales each in Hong Kong and Geneva. The addition of a second New York auction to the ann...
The Nine Most Stylish Golf Players And Their Watches
I love golf. I love that its traditions are built on etiquette and sportsmanship, and the fact that through the decades, golfers (pros and amateurs, alike) would actually dress up to go play a round. And while I don't play much golf C my handicap is in military time vs. standard time C I had a stint working for the Arnold Palmer Company, and there's a beautiful Arnold Palmer pictorial book from the mid-'90s in my office. He's one of the most stylish men in history, golfer or not. About a year or so ago, we started dressing a friend and customer of ours on the PGA Tour, Keith Mitchell. When he came to us about wardrobing, he said Arnold Palmer circa late-'60s and ...
A Hands On Look At the HYT Supernova Blue Moon Runner
Recently, I published a story (it happens). The comments, at least some of them, expressed frustration over a couple of things (it happens). The two things in question were the spate of very expensive watches recently on the site, and the other was at the frequency with which prices were reported as "available on request." This tends to happen in the context of limited edition high complications and I am not entirely sure why the brands insist on the piece of theater that is price on request, except that perhaps it keeps them from committing to a market-specific price for a piece whose actual cost might vary by thousands of dollars, depending on whether or not there has been a FOREX hiccup.?...
Chanel 12 X-RAY RED EDITION review
I am coming up on my first year as a "watch person," and I've finally seen enough in the metal to create a sort of mental reference library and a more discerning frame of reference. Watches still frequently surprise me when they settle onto my wrist (it has only been a year, after all), but I've gotten pretty good at figuring out what my dealbreakers are. And I know what tends to make me go all googly-eyed and financially reckless. I put my instincts to the test during Watches & Wonders, and I was generally pretty good at spotting from a distance A) the watches I would like once I tried them on, B) the ones that wouldn't be for me, personally, but that I coul...
With Watches & Wonders now come and gone, I wanted to get a proper chat in about the marvelous moment of the MoonSwatch. From the product to the international lines, the flipping, and the impact on both the brands and the core enthusiast, I asked Danny, Cole, and Logan to?jump on a mic and share their thoughts.? Thanks so much for listening and be sure to hit the comments to let us know your favorite version, if you managed to get a MoonSwatch, or if you're still waiting for stock at a local store or the possibility of online ordering.? Louis Vuitton Watchmaking Factory Tour
Louis Vuitton is synonymous with luxury goods. The Parisian company's monogram is recognizable worldwide as a symbol of affluence and prosperity. (Louis Vuitton was ranked by Forbes as the world's ninth most valuable brand and the top fashion/luxury brand in 2019, ahead of behemoth organizations including McDonald's, Nike, AT&T, and Visa C?seriously.) Louis Vuitton trunks, bags, leather goods, accessories, ready-to-wear, and fragrances have legions of fans in every country on Earth. That's great and all C?but we're here to discuss watches. And what does Louis Vuitton know about watchmaking? Louis Vuitton introduced the first of its famous flat-topped leather-...
Robert Redford Wore His Own Rolex In 'All The President's Men'
On July 9, 1972, after completing the film, The Candidate, Robert Redford was on a promotional tour aboard a whistle-stop train to Florida. This was a locomotive ride taken by countless political candidates every four years. You make a stop, make a speech, and move on. The purpose of this trip was twofold: To promote the low-budget Michael Ritchie film, and to see if Redford C the biggest star of the day C could outdraw the other (real) political candidates. On the way to one of the stops, the red-haired wonder went to the back of the train to ask about the turnout for the real candidates. He was told around 500-750 voters for each. 4,000 came out to meet Redford...
Chanel introduces the Boy.Friend Red Skeleton at Watches & Wonders 2022
The Chanel Boy.Friend watches debuted in 2015, and when Cara Barrett went hands-on with it she noted that the idea behind the name was that if you wore it, your boyfriend would want to steal it from you. The watch originally came in Chanel's "beige gold" (an alloy that's slightly lighter than yellow gold, but not as obviously coppery as pink gold) with a diamond bezel, and white gold. I don't know about the idea of inducing larceny in one's significant other but I thought then and still think it'd make a perfectly fine men's dress watch C the Tank Louis Cartier, large model, is 33.7 mm x 25.5 mm, and the Boy.Friend Skeleton of 2018 is 37 x 28.6, so the wear experiences of the Tank LC and Boy...
Bonhams Chairman Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard on his strategy for watch auctions
Who doesn't like records? The watch enthusiast press likes reporting on them, auction houses like setting them, and in general, there has for many years been a tendency to focus on spectacular prices realized. This plays to an obvious interest in reading about records and seeing them being broken, and for those of us who've been interested in watches for decades, those enormous sums realized for what used to be a niche interest are also a sort of validation that even before the larger world took notice, we were on to something. However, with the rising prices have come ... well, rising prices. That means that the hottest auctions C which often, though not always,...
A Hands-On Review Of The H. Moser Cylindrical Tourbillon
Six weeks or so ago, I attended a New York Knicks game with a few watch-loving pals. Once we found our seats in Madison Square Garden, we did the natural "watch guy" thing and took a group wrist shot to commemorate the experience. (I'll admit it all sounds a bit unbearable now that I'm typing it out, but stick with me.) Our collective photo caught the attention of the gentleman sitting behind us who just so happened to be a watch collector himself. We all immediately started chatting about watches C?ignoring the struggling Knicks in front of us C?and after mentioning I worked at HODINKEE, I was a bit taken aback by the question he immediately asked me:"What are your thoughts on Moser?" ...
The Hublot That You Can't Buy Is Just Plain Bad Ass
In early high school, I got caught lighting fireworks off on school grounds. This was during the era of zero-tolerance policies in the early 2000s and the administration didn't take kindly to my little stunt, and neither did the local police. They even tried to scare me straight by suggesting they might charge me, a 15-year-old, with arson. I had to take a trip down to the local precinct for what amounted to a slap on the wrist. The way I saw it, a big, open school parking lot was the safest place around to shoot off bottle rockets, as there are very few open spaces in densely populated Northern New Jersey. Of course, they didn't see it that way. In hindsight, it...
Eric Whiteback On The Supreme Timex He Loves
In Watch of the Week, we invite HODINKEE staffers and friends to explain why they love a certain watch. This week's columnist is an expert in collectible culture, focusing on streetwear and social media. I will just say this up front: I'm not a lifelong watch enthusiast. I'm a collectibles guy. I'm an especially big fan of the brand Supreme, interested in streetwear and sneaker culture and all of that. I create content around Supreme, streetwear, sneakers, collectibles, and more on social. That said, I've always appreciated watches C I have my eye on a few different Rolex, and I own a commemorative watch that has some sentimental valu...
Greetings one and all and welcome to another episode of Hey, HODINKEE, where you ask watch and watch-adjacent questions and, inspired by the tireless oscillations of Drinky Bird, we strive to answer to the very best of our ability. Our questions today run the gamut from technical to ethical. On the technical side, one observant and curious viewer wants to know why you usually see a counterweight on a seconds hand, but not on the hour or minute hands. Another viewer wonders about switching languages on the day wheel of the venerable Rolex Day-Date C trivial challenge or technical nightmare? And, in a vexing poser to which there is no easy answer, someone writes in...
