Welcome to "GPHG Week," a themed mini-series where we're covering four winning watches from this year's Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genve that you otherwise may have previously missed. Today we have the Voutilainen KV20i which was awarded the "Men's Watch" award at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genve this year . Another year, another Kari Voutilainen GPHG award, and another few handful of watches I'd love to own from the man himself. The more things change, the more things stay the same. Last year, when Voutilainen won for his World-Timer, I asked him jokingly, "Isn't it starting to get old, winning these many awards?" He just smiled the shy smile he has when s...

Michael Clerizo is a veteran watch writer with more than 25 years of experience. He was The Wall Street Journal's watch columnist for three years and a contributing editor at WSJ Magazine for more than 10. He is also a frequent presenter of CNN's Timeless segments. Clerizo is the author of three books: Masters Of Contemporary Watchmaking, George Daniels: A Master Watchmaker And His Art, and the soon-to-be-published Greubel Forsey: The Art Of Invention C which is now available for pre-order on Amazon. On a late spring day in 1970, in Le Mans, France, the site of the famous 24-hour race, a meeting took place that engendered four mysteries that would haunt future wa...

The world of escapements is absolutely captivating, as each tick and tock reveals the precision of a timepiece and the artistry of its maker. At the December 2024 lecture of the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), Bernhard Lederer, Master Watchmaker and Founder of Lederer Timepieces, will take the audience on a journey through the evolution of these mechanisms, from the origins of resting escapements to the revolutionary innovations of horological legends like Abraham-Louis Breguet and George Daniels. This lecture isn't just for those with technical knowledge C it's for anyone with a passion for horology, eager to uncover the secrets behind the pulse of every...

The hotly-anticipated black-dialed stainless steel no-date Seamaster 300M is here, just a few short months after appearing at the Olympics on the wrist of James Bond C I mean, Daniel Craig. So it's fitting that this new release has already picked up the "Daniel Craig" nickname online. But even more surprising is that Omega has launched a brushed silver dial and bezel option alongside it, and that's not the only remarkable part of the revamp. In fact, the watches pull quite a few details from the 007 "No Time To Die" Seamasters that have become a staple of the collection. There are two new models and four new SKUs (two bracelet op...

It's finally time to talk about SpaceOne. In fact, it's far past time. There's been a wild rise, fall (or rather pause), and rise again of the SpaceOne brand over the last two years, and we haven't fully covered any of it. And there's a reason. As a rule, Hodinkee doesn't cover Kickstarter brands, even if they are run by people with solid backgrounds in the watch space. The business mind behind SpaceOne is no stranger to Hodinkee. Guillaume Laidet seems to be everywhere these days C behind Nivada Grenchen, Vulcain, and, for a while, at the helm of Excelsior Park C so I felt confident that when Ladet launched a brand called Argon with a model called "SpaceOne," he...

Welcome back to Bring A Loupe and happy Friday! If last week's edition was a return to "regular" form in this column, with the general focus being vintage chronographs, this week we stretch our legs a bit as we dip into the strange and esoteric. Let's recap some results from last week before we get started. The Favre-Leuba for BMW has been marked as sold out C that was a good deal. George Clooney's Omega sold for $34,100 on eBay and the Heuer Autavia ref. 73463 went for 5,040 all-in at Lyon & Turnbull. And lastly, the Boucheron is up for auction next Tuesday, the 26th. Enough about the past, here are this week's picks! ...

Earlier this week Hublot released a Big Bang Unico with 37-year-old tennis champion Novak Djokovic. Designed in collaboration with the 24-time Grand Slam champion, the limited edition watch was unveiled in Paris at the H?tel d'vreux, a historic mansion located on Place Vend?me, in front of a gathering of journalists and guests from around the world. The watch was revealed (literally revealed as the curtain was lifted) at 8 PM on the dot in typical Swiss watch-brand fashion. And while the Ruinart was flowing and the glamorous people were giving their best poses in front of the step-and-repeat, the setting almost felt a little too glam for a sports watch collab launch. But such is the luxury-...

Last month, in partnership with UBS, we hosted a get-together and series of talks in New York City called "House of Craft." The event featured a who's who of watch-world luminaries, including industry legend Jean-Claude Biver, actor Keegan Allen, chef Alton Brown, AP CEO of the Americas Ginny Wright, actor Daniel Dae Kim, journalist Jay Fielden, independent watchmaker Simon Brette, actor and comedian Ronny Chieng, dealer and collector Alessandro Fanciulli, auction specialist Geoff Hess, and menswear designer Todd Snyder. Photo: David Aujero As promised, we filmed these conversations and will be rolling them out over the next f...

In 2022, Ressence introduced its simplest and most futuristic-looking design yet C the Type 8. The 42.9mm case featured integrated, almost shrouded lugs and an ultra-simplified take on their traditional orbital time display in a Cobalt blue color. A year later, the Type 8 received a new sage green variant, and both have remained as the two Type 8s in the model line since. This year, Ressence designs a new Type 8 for Shellman, one of the world's best-regarded retailers for both vintage and independent watchmaking, for a new take on the model in a limited run of 8 pieces with an exciting twist C all of the blue that you see on the dial is from natural Japanese indi...

For most brands, leaks are the last thing that they want. But Omega has turned leaks into an art form. Two of our most read stories in the last year were Daniel Craig "spotted" wearing the unreleased white dial Speedmaster in New York and then an unreleased black dial Seamaster at the Paris Olympics. These were undoubtedly intentional placements (ones that, for the record, I was not prompted by Omega to cover), but boy, people got excited. But you can only use that trick so many times. Omega's new Speedmaster Pilot was another leak that hit the brand. Except this time, the leak wasn't intentional. But damn, was it cool. This watc...

Print media is having a renaissance. Listen, I know I have an agenda to push here, but believe me when I tell you that magazines are hot right now. New York Magazine's The Cut was turned into a stand-alone print issue for Fall 2024, Sports Illustrated is back in circulation, and Life magazine is on the way to being resuscitated any day now. Along with the post-pandemic uptick of drinking martinis, playing in backgammon leagues, and wearing some variation of a Barbour wax jacket (do you even ramble?), not to mention the triumphant post-covid reign of classic Keith McNally New York institutions like Balthazar and Pastis, magazines are having a moment. The yearning to thumb through the pages of...

It's been a long and endlessly entertaining road since I started to work with Hodinkee in 2017. So much has changed since then; Hodinkee was different, and so was the world of watches. I started as a freelancer, and the following seven years have been nothing short of an education via too many adventures to list here. Today, I'm deeply proud to announce that I have accepted the role of Hodinkee's Editor-In-Chief. Throughout these years, I've always tried to put the watch community first and cut through as much of the noise as possible, and that will remain the goal of Hodinkee's editorial direction moving forward. Many of you kno...

The last time we covered Aera C a microbrand focused on creating Swiss-made watches focused around one core silhouette C co-founders Jas Minhas and Olof Larsson revealed their most complicated watch to date in the C-1 Chronograph. Now, Aera dials everything back to reveal their simplest model yet in the field-watch-inspired M-1 series. Aera cites inspiration for these two contemporary time-only designs from the "Dirty Dozen", a group of, you guessed it, twelve field watch models that were commissioned by the British Ministry of Defense for soldiers in WWII. Though the inspiration started there, the end product is still unmistakab...

Welcome to "GPHG Week," a themed mini-series where we're covering four winning watches from this year's Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genve that you otherwise may have previously missed. Today, we have the IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar, which was awarded the Aiguille d'Or at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genve this year for watch of the year according to the GPHG Jury. This year, IWC achieved something remarkable that only three other brands have accomplished in the modern era. Amid a relaunch of the Portugeiser line with an updated case, the brand announced it had cracked the code on one of the most challenging complications with their secular perpetual calen...

There's a new, most expensive Nautilus in town, and yet again, it comes in any metal as long as it's steel. After some spirited bidding, the team at Phillips was able to nudge the unique and engraved ref. 5711/1500A past the record set by the first Tiffany blue Nautilus, landing at CHF 6,700,000 C or around $7,650,000. If that sounds like a lot of money to you, don't worry; it came with matching cuff links. Photo courtesy Phillips Watches. The watch C a hand-engraved unique piece donated by Patek Philippe C was auctioned on behalf of the charity Children Action, established by Swiss entrepreneur Bernard Sabrier in 1994, which ...

An English brand with a rich history dating back to Aaron Lufkin Dennison founding a case-making company in 1874, Dennison last graced the illustrious pages of Hodinkee in 2016. That watch, the DENCO53, was a very 2016 attempt at bringing the brand back. It was a design inspired by a Dennison-cased watch on the wrist of Sir Edmund Hilary when summiting Everest in 1953. It was powered by an ETA caliber 2824-2 at a time when the Tudor Black Bay and Heuer Carrera used the same caliber. And it very proudly featured a case manufactured entirely in the UK. The price for this previous Dennison? Roughly $3,500 to $4,050. This 2024 Dennison release and relaunch we see tod...

Louis Erard, a brand no stranger to collaborations and regulator dials (collabulators? regulatorations?) has teamed up with Vianney Halter for a second time, with the Le Rgulateur Louis Erard x Vianney Halter II. If you aren't familiar with the first collaboration between the two partners, the Le Rgulateur Louis Erard x Vianney Halter launched in 2020 as an opportunity to offer something with Vianney Halter's very distinctive aesthetic to the masses C a regulator manufactured by Louis Erard with Halter's design that was priced at 3,500 CHF, a price point that is quite significantly below what Halter's actual watches fetched both at retail and the secondary market. ...

In September, Frederique Constant launched the Classics Moneta Moonphase in Europe as a smartly priced quartz piece that seemed to get a lot of attention quickly among watch lovers. Now, a few months later, you'll soon (if not already) be able to pick up the model as Frederique Constant brings the watch to the United States for the reasonable price of $1,295. The Classic Moneta Moonphase comes in a 37mm by 7.65mm stainless case, housing a quartz movement for the hours, minutes, and moon phase, with an estimated run time of 60 months before you'll need to charge the battery. The watch has a high-polish case finish, which matches t...

There is nobody like him C in watches or out C and today, we're here to let him share his own story in his own words. Fran?ois-Henry Bennahmias (or FHB) is, right now, as we publish this story at 9 oclock AM Eastern Time on Wednesday, December 20th, celebrating his very last day as global CEO of Audemars Piguet. He is departing AP as one of the very few billion-dollar brands in watchmaking C the one brand that somehow combines fine haute horlogerie (the likes of which garner the respect of world's leading experts at the industry's most prestigious awards) while maintaining a brand presence that makes *actual* normal people want to go out and buy them by the caseload. By some accounts, AP is...

Last time I checked my notes, watches C like most things C aren't getting any cheaper. The past several years have seen a steady upward cost creep as brands adjust to market pressures, the hype cycle, and the general winds of enthusiast attention. But here we are, mere weeks after the largest and most luxurious trade show in watches, and one of my favorite releases of the entire year is the new Doxa Sub 200T. It's a dive watch based on the brand's iconic '60s-derived design language that shrinks the proportions of the Sub 300-series into a smaller and more wearable package. With a swath of new color options and a price point that puts the 200T within shooting distance of popular options from...
