As 2024 draws to a close, it's time once again for one of the most time-honored traditions here at Hodinkee. Each year since 2013, we've asked Hodinkee team members to tell us about the single watch that saw the most wrist time during the previous year. We call it "The Watch I Wore Most," and more than anything, it's an annual celebration of all things watches and the memories and milestones they represent. Happy New Year from team Hodinkee to you and yours. We hope it was a good year for you in terms of watches, and all the things that matter to you most....

Photo above: Pocket watch by John Wright, New York City, ca. 1715, the earliest known American watch. A watch was one of the most expensive consumer goods that one could buy in early America. They were a technical mystery that embodied the very height of craftsmanship, fashion, and artistry in the world, and conveyed one's stature in society. At the January 2025 lecture of the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), Antiquarian Horologist Richard Newman will introduce "Early American Pocket Watches," HSNY's latest exhibit that spans 125 years of American watchmaking. From the earliest known American-signed watch, made in about 1715, t...

This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written HSNY's librarians. Today's post was jointly written by Dr. Miranda Marraccini and St John Karp. Happy New Year from the Horological Society of New York's Jost Brgi Research Library! At the end of December, as a light snow fell over our headquarters on 44th Street in Manhattan, coating our elaborate ironwork fire escape, the library was bustling with holiday tourists. The end of the year gave us a chance to celebrate how far we've come since the modern library's grand opening in 2022Cthe time has flown! Our library has grown from just an exciting idea at the beginning of the...

In partnership with UBS, we hosted a get-together and series of talks in New York City called "House of Craft." The event featured a who's who of watch-world luminaries, including industry legend Jean-Claude Biver, actor Keegan Allen, author Alton Brown, AP CEO of the Americas Ginny Wright, actor Daniel Dae Kim, journalist Jay Fielden, independent watchmaker Simon Brette, actor and comedian Ronny Chieng, dealer and collector Alessandro Fanciulli, auction specialist Geoff Hess, and menswear designer Todd Snyder. It's a brand new year, and that means a brand new video from the UBS House of Craft. For this installment, Ben and James...

Eight years after stepping away from his last eponymous brand, Speake-Marin, and three years after starting PS Horology, Peter Speake has just announced his first model, the Japanese-inspired Tsuba Blue and Japanese/Vietnamese-inspired Tsuba Dong Son. If you don't know Speake, you should. In addition to his work at Speake-Marin, he worked for Renaud & Papi in Le Locle for four years before starting the brand. He also worked on the educational platform "The Naked Watchmaker," and collaborated with Harry Winston, Ma?tres du Temps, and MB&F, among others.?Now, he's back again with a brand new creation.? The Tsuba Blue. Th...

By now, my anachronistic love of pocket watches C my "pocket watch agenda," as it's become known C is well documented. I'm sure someone (maybe Rich) would have liked them to put a "no pocket watch" clause in my contract, but here we are again. Somehow, it's started to take hold, and a few friends have even asked me for guidance on buying their first pocket watch. If they're from the U.S., I always say the same thing: maybe look at private-label pocket watches. A Hamilton watch for Fred McIntyre, sold by Bonhams. Don't ever tell me that Americans didn't know how to beautifully finish their industrially-made watches. Photo courtesy Bonhams. ...

Design duo Phil Toledano and Alfred Chan are set to release a follow-up to their first watch, the B/1, this spring. The new model, aptly named B/1.2, is decorated with a Tahitian mother-of-pearl dial, which is showcased through a newly asymmetrical sapphire crystal.? Fresh on the heels of last year's "audaciously" designed B1, the B/1.2 is not a repetition. Rather, it's a new articulation of the same idea. "As an artist, especially, why would I want to just say the same sentence again?" explained Toledano, "I'd rather say a new sentence." From a design standpoint, the challenge is changing the B/1 design just enough but not too m...

Last August, at Geneva Watch Days, a watch came out that has seldom left my head since its C and the brand's C own inception. That watch is the Albishorn x Massena LAB Maxigraph. A bold choice of strategy on behalf of Albishorn to have its first release be a collaboration rather than a standalone product, but the brand also quickly followed suit with its standalone flight-inspired Type 10. This isn't the first time Albishorn, founded by Sellita's Sbastien Chaulmontet, has made an appearance on Hodinkee C I highly recommend you give his interview on Hodinkee Radio a listen C and the Maxigraph made it onto our Editor's Picks last summer for Geneva Watch Days. In a year that most have called a...

Alright, I'll cut to the chase. Vacheron Constantin now has a Historiques 222 in steel. It has the same great dimensions (37mm by 7.95mm), the same movement, and the same vintage touches, now in more casual and affordable stainless steel, for $32,000. And yes, its awesome. Its a big year for anniversaries in the watch world. From brand anniversaries to iconic models, there will be a lot of celebrations, but none have the longevity of Vacheron Constantins 270 years. Sure, there will be parties and fanfare later, but right now, Vacheron decided to skip it all and drop a pretty hot release that watch nerds have been asking for an...

Around this time, two days ago, I was finishing my first appointments at LVMH Watch Week, the group's annual early-year trade show, where brands release their early novelties and tease their marketing and messaging for the year ahead of Watches & Wonders. This year, the show expanded to include Tiffany & Co., L'Epe, and C maybe most notably C Louis Vuitton and the La Fabrique du Temps brands Daniel Roth and Gerald Genta.? These two ceramic Hublot "Spirt of Big Bang" were cool in person and I won't be convinced otherwise. The event had been relocated from Los Angeles to New York due to the tragic wildfires in The City ...

Oftentimes, when a watch brand "collaborates" with a charitable organization, one may assume a position of skepticism for one-time endeavors that keep details like total contribution and impact intentionally vague. However, the relationship between Nomos Glashtte and the humanitarian aid organization Doctors Without Borders has proven to be a lasting one C for 13 years and counting. In fact, the brand is rightfully proud to say that it has raised over 1.3 million euros to date in this charitable partnership through several limited edition series produced just for the occasion. To continue raising funds for Doctors Without Border...

If you love motor racing, especially endurance racing, Hurley Haywood needs no introduction. The Chicago-born race car driver had a career that would make him the hero of any aspiring racer, including five wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, two overall wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring, and three victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Yes, that's a twofer for the "triple crown of endurance racing," and those are only the highlights. Haywood is nothing short of a road-racing legend, and he's enjoyed a five-decade partnership with two very important names in the world of endurance racing: Porsche and Rolex.? We caught up with Hurley in ...

Under the steady guidance of Rick Marei, the Aquastar brand has been carefully revived over the past five years with reissues of its Deepstar and Benthos references, capturing a strong community following. From its 1958 inception, first as a sub-brand of Jean Richard, Aquastar was quickly established as a go-to dive watch brand, with the 1970 Benthos 500 certified by the US Navy throughout the 1970s. This was the brand for professional divers wanting the right tool for the job. If you need the backstory on all things Aquastar, I recommend a rewind to 2020 with Jason Heaton on a dive with the Deepstar or listening to the adventures of the late Captain Don Walsh on The Grey Nato podcast. ...

What does it take to create a timepiece that transcends mere function and becomes a work of art? How do watchmakers incorporate elements of design and aesthetics into their creations? And what specific skills and techniques are necessary to elevate a watch from a simple tool to an object of beauty and wonder? With a career distinguished by multiple world records in horological innovation, Fran?ois Perez, Technical Director and Movement Constructor at Biver, draws on both his personal achievements and the brand's meticulous approach to advance the art and science of horology. At the February 2025 lecture of the Horological Society of N...

Giorgio Galli is an OG of the watch industry. The Italian designer has decades of experience, most notably helming Swatch's Milan-based design headquarters in the 90s and later touching projects from Citizen, Ebel, and Movado. But to me, he's the guy responsible for taking the historied Timex name, once a humble American brand and now a name behind a large international conglomerate, and injecting a solid design-led sensibility amongst a product line containing an overwhelming number of models catered for, well, everybody.? While this means that Galli oversees a product pipeline that has to appeal to a global market where most ha...

Gong Hei Fat Choy! Today marks the official kickoff of the Year of the Snake, and what better way to do that on a website dedicated to watches than, well, look at a few of the Lunar New Year-themed releases of the past few weeks (and one that has just launched today). While many of these editions are undoubtedly targeted towards specific markets C there's a reason why a ton of these editions have a ridiculous number of 8s in their numbering C the Zodiac cycle means that brands can flex their metiers d'art prowess with a different theme every single year.?While this roundup covers a good bit of range when it comes to 2025's themed releases, it's in no way comprehensive but hopefully showcases...

To celebrate the tenth year of the Windup Watch Fair, Worn & Wound is launching the enthusiast-focused event in a new city: Dallas, Texas, on March 15 and 16, and Hodinkee Insurance is thrilled to continue the tradition of sponsoring the event for the fourth time. Our Head of Hodinkee Insurance and licensed insurance agent, Marc Hajjar, will be on-site to answer any questions and give free quotes about insuring your watches and jewelry.
