Direct Metal Laser Sintering, or DMLS. That's the secret behind another new and innovative take on the longstanding presence of Panerai's iconic Luminor. Launched alongside a refresh of the entire Luminor lineup, this very grey expression is the reference PAM01662 Luminor Marina DMLS 44mm. Like the also new Luminor Marina Fibratech 44mm, the DMLS comes out of Panerai's special projects group C that's the Panerai Laboratorio di Idee C and is the result of a specialized 3D printing process. Complete with a few elements rendered in Carbotech, the Panerai PAM01662 is a muted grey-on-grey affair that continues the brand's ongoing commitment to the extensive use of technically advanced specialized...

Earlier this year Vacheron Constantin launched a brand new ladies' collection C grie C as its first new collection for women since 2003. Continuing along with women's pieces, Vacheron is releasing two new versions of the Traditionnelle Tourbillon, the Tourbillon in pink gold and the Tourbillon Jewelry in white gold set with pav diamonds. This marks the first automatic tourbillon for women produced by Vacheron, and it fits nicely in the Traditionnelle collection. Both watches are classic in their design with a 39mm case with the exposed tourbillon cage at 6 o'clock. The watch is powered by the caliber 2160 which is used in the original Traditionnelle Tourbillon...

Today, we have a new titanium flying tourbillon to introduce from Speake-Marin. It's available in two sizes, 38mm and 42mm, which you can see side by side in the image above C the smaller version is on the left. As an openworked watch, the dial is virtually nonexistent, save the chapter ring rehaut, allowing an unfettered view onto the newly developed in-house tourbillon mechanism. In each version, the movement appears as if turned askew, though it's actually highly symmetrical when you look closer. At about the 1:30 position, you can see the flying tourbillon, and directly below it is a large bridge holding in place the micro-rotor (the watch is automatic). Just...

IWC is putting the cal. 89361 to work in the third generation of the Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph, a take on the stainless steel sport watch that's in trend right now. The bracelet has an "integrated" look, blending seamlessly with the lines of the case. However, it's affixed in a traditional manner to the case; the lugs are just slightly more compact, lending an uninterrupted aesthetic to the whole package. The nautical flavor and the stainless steel trend are ripe for a blue dial, and the Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph (Ref. IW390701) delivers, with a sunburst navy blue dial and rhodium-plated hands.? Continuing the l...

The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical pops up often as a value proposition for the general watch-buying public, as well as hitting the right hallmarks to excite the military watch-focused crowd. It's also just a great watch for daily wear. Now, Hamilton has added another Khaki to the lineup C and this one is in titanium. It's sized at 42mm and comes in a raw finish with a silver dial, and a black PVD with a black dial. Inside, you'll find the cal. H-10 automatic movement with an impressive 80-hour power reserve. ?? A common gripe about the Khaki Field Mechanical is the "fauxtina" lume. The hands are filled with a slightly aged-look...

A favorite debate among watch lovers is the classic "Is watchmaking art, craft, or something else entirely?" argument. People tend to have pretty strong opinions on the subject, and those opinions are as diverse as they are emphatic. But with this new video series from The Hour Glass, one of the world's leading watch retailers, the creative processes of exemplary watchmakers are explored right alongside those of famous architects, artists, designers, and more. It's called The Lives of Artists, and it debuts today with a look at MB&F founder Maximilian Bsser. That seems like a pretty strong answer to that age-old question, doesn't it? There will be nine total...

The Luminor Marina has a pretty dressy new addition joining its ranks C one that, at first glance, bears a fairly close resemblance to the watches from the company's Luminor Due line of slim sport watches.?The new Luminor Marina Panerai Goldtech 44mm is?definitely one of the more refined takes on the Luminor Marina I've seen of late, as evidenced by its satin-brushed dial and its precious metal case.?Panerai Goldtech is not entirely new per se, but it is a fairly recent development for Panerai, and its uses so far have included one of the company's Submersible models, which in itself offers insight into the nature of the material. In keeping with Panerai's recent efforts to create longer-las...

Inspired by the 36th America's Cup, Panerai has released the new Luminor Luna Rossa GMT. At 44mm, this DLC-coated titanium timepiece celebrates and invokes the Challenger of Record for the famed yachting contest which has taken place since 1851. Adding to Panerai's seafaring heritage, this new offering is robust, decidedly modern, and full of texture and detail. Not to mention the fact that, aside from an impressive 300m water resistance, it also bears a rather useful dual-time function.? Beating away inside the Luna Rossa GMT is the in-house P.9010/GMT caliber which provides every bit of functionality necessary for a dual-time timepiece and is a crucial componen...

Interesting patina and objective rarity are the name of the game this week. In this installment of Bring A Loupe, you'll find picks like a seldom-seen Movado chronograph featuring Breguet numerals, in addition to a rare and early Rolex Explorer with potentially notable provenance. In an effort to shed more light on square-cased watches, there's another rather stunning Movado, again with Breguet numerals on its patina-heavy dial, plus a Universal Genve that enjoys an affectionate nickname. Here we go! Universal Genve 'Cioccolatone' Ref. 10239/1 "Watch collectorese" is one of the most fascinating ...

Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review here, and tell us which guests we should have on! A lot of people think they know who Matt Hranek is, but very few people can actually pin him down. If you follow his Instagram account, Matt seems to be everywhere at once. Hes in LA hanging out at the Tower Bar; hes in Bordeaux grilling up steaks for friends; hes in New York shooting photographs and working on his next book. The crazy part though is that he really is doing all of these things, racking up those frequent flyer miles and rarely taking a break ...

In celebration of our shared love of watches, we hosted a get-together for you, our readers, earlier this week in Downtown New York City. As you'll see in the photos below, the Ainsworth was packed with watch nerds enjoying cocktails and cold beer while talking, and sharing, an incredible array of watches C from a Swatch Sistem51 to a Bulgari Octo Finissimo. Thank you to all of you who joined us; and for those who couldn't make it C stay tuned, we'll be hosting more of these meet-ups in the near future. Until then, enjoy these photos of the evening. ...

Mahershala Ali had a pretty big night last night. He took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Green Book, which also won Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 2019 Academy Awards. This is actually the second time Ali has taken home the award, having also won in 2017 for his performance in Moonlight (which, that same year, also won Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay). That the final episode of True Detective: Season 3 C another incredible vehicle for Ali's acting C also aired during the awards ceremony was the icing on the cake. And while all of this was going on, Ali was rocking a pretty incredible watch in the Santos de Cartier Skeleton. Like I said, it...

It is no secret that over the years Bremont has worked on a number of special-order projects at the request of various branches of the British Armed Forces. This work has culminated in what we see here, an agreement which sees Bremont given the license to use signs, symbols, and Heraldic Badges from all three branches of Britains Armed Forces C and they're the only luxury watchmaker with permission to do so.To mark the launch of this new partnership, Bremont has launched the Armed Forces Collection, which includes three MoD-inspired references, all chronometer-rated, and non-limited. All three models features cases made in UK, which is particularly interesting, as it will be the first time ...

Ever since The Road To Basel, we've always referred to Ochs und Junior watches as "rigorously simple" here at HODINKEE. Now, what do we mean by that, exactly? We mean that the watches appear simple and do away with a lot of the usual pomp and circumstance that accompanies so-called luxury watchmaking these days, while still representing an extremely well-thought out approach to modern watchmaking that prioritizes functionality and customer enjoyment over frills or complication for its own sake. The brand's latest watch, the Two Time Zones + Date is yet another outstanding embodiment of this rigorously simple philosophy. This is a...

I already told you earlier today about Mahershala Ali's big night at the Oscars last night and the killer skeletonized Cartier Santos that was on his wrist for his Best Supporting Actor win C but he wasn't the only one sporting something seriously cool on his wrist at the annual awards show.?Bradley Cooper, who directed, produced, co-wrote, and starred in the seven-times-nominated A Star Is Born, rolled up to the red carpet wearing a unique IWC Big Pilot's Watch that is now being sold by Sotheby's to benefit the Antoine de Saint-Exupry Foundation. Unique watches being sold for charity are nothing new (we told you about this one just last week), but adding the direct connection to brand amba...

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Lange 1, A. Lange & Sohne is releasing a set of 10 commemorative watches instead of just one special edition. We got the first one last month during SIHH in the form of the Lange 1 "25th Anniversary," and now here's the second: the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase "25th Anniversary." The watch takes the already familiar model and gives it the same treatment that the aforementioned Lange 1 received, with a white gold case and two-tone silver dial punctuated by blue numerals and blued steel hands. The kicker here though is the addition of a hand-engraved disc made of solid white gold for the moonphase complication. It's subtle and beautiful, showing off the...

When it comes to auctions, watches with provenance have been some of the biggest runaway successes over the last few years. Typically these watches belong to celebrities, musicians, and movie stars such as Elvis Presley, Robin Williams, and, of course, Paul Newman. But then there are the watches who belong to people of note for other reasons C Jackie O and her Cartier Tank come to mind here. The watch we have here today definitely falls into the latter camp. Available now at RR Auction in Boston is a Longines watch that once belonged to Oskar Schindler, the industrialist who is credited with saving more than 1,000 lives during the Holocaust and the inspiration for Steven Spielberg's 1993 fil...

The combination of precious materials with utilitarian objects is a well-worn street style trope, but this might be the most extreme expression I've ever seen. A solid gold G-Shock is something which we've seen heretofore only as a one-off (first revealed in 2015 as the "Dream Project" G-Shock) and I'd never especially expected one to become available commercially. However, when the Full Metal G-Shock models became available, they included one with a gold-tone case and bracelet, which became the subject of a very popular A Week On The Wrist. The gold-tone Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000TFG-9 Full Metal The Full Metal gold watch is sol...

February is finally over and the ice is starting to thaw. To celebrate the coming spring months and our continued partnership with Todd Snyder, we are hosting a meet-up with our friends on Wednesday, March 6. The event will take place at Todd Snyder's New York City flagship store on Madison Square Park from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. We will be there with a handful of our editors and will warm up with some Balvenie scotch and patinated vintage watches fresh from the HODINKEE Shop vault.? If you are interested in attending, please RSVP here so that we can add you to the list. Space is limited and we will get back to you on a first come, fir...

Standing in a palm tree-lined parking lot, I am baking in the sun. My first time in Miami, I can feel the onset of sunburn and I've only been out of my cab for five minutes. I've come to Miami for Watches & Wonders and arrived a bit early to hunt down a specific Miami Beach address at the request of one Ben Clymer. Unfortunately, I'm lost.? Tasked with the enviable afternoon assignment of offering a follow up to this classic HODINKEE post, I'm trying to find Matthew Bain's studio. For many of you, Matthew Bain won't need an introduction. He is a prolific vintage watch dealer based in Miami, and you may remember him from his p...
